I live in Reykjavik and had seen this name but everybody I asked knew nothing and once I talked to a shop owner who had a shop next to Sruli and all he said was "I'm not sure I think he designs clothes or something" - so I find it funny to finally discover who he is by watching your video.
Not a designer I'd expect you to cover given your typical style but I have to say that I appreciate this video for showing what makes Sruli's "shocking" designs so much more interesting and nuanced than any other brand's social media stunts.
This was immensely rad! You absolutely should do more videos on designers like this, even if you need to slow down the work pace to make sure they are of a quality you are proud of. You could feel how much you wanted to do this and how much you must have polished this video and it's really really really cool
great video antwon, despite being in spaces that frequently discuss his work, i did not know some of the details that you covered in this video. would love to see you cover other "avant-garde" designers like boris bidjan saberi (whom you have already covered his salomon shoe collab), and carpe diem and its offshoots (altieri, amadei, fujita, murakami) etc.
Glad you're repping Wrong Trousers, I caught their Recht vid a while back and they are definitely a Fashion YT up-and-comer 😎 Their 'Iceberg of Awful Shoes' was a particular winner for me, you know you are getting in deep when you recognise a bunch of the shoe silhouettes before they are revealed 😇
Also I like what you're doing with your lighting setup here, having a more oblique angle on your main gives you some nice shadow and dimensionality on your face, looking more pro than the flatter lighting of your earlier videos.
Not to be the "um actually" guy but they didn't take a spider's silk gland and implanted it into a goat's udder, that's just marketing to fit his brand. They used genetic engineering to alter fertilized goat eggs. They basically inserted instructions for making spider silk proteins into the goat's DNA, together with a sequence that only allows the production of these silk proteins where the goat usually produces casein (milk protein), so in the milk glands. This was necessary since it is not really possible to control where in the goat's genome the silk DNA ends up with the method they used
Sruli Recht is by far my favorite designer, I wish he was talked about in the fashion and design space more often since his work is pinnacle. One of my favorite pieces of his is the EPOCH is SR540 ring, which is made from the Muonionalusta Meteorite, considered to be the oldest meteorite to have impacted the earth. I’m starting to collect his work and I’m hoping to build a solid collection over time, I actually ordered a few pieces from the Vertice store you mentioned in the video.
Sruli is a true creative genius. He is more than a fashion designer as you showed. With his varying projects and collaborations. I was luckily enough to stock and handle many of his pieces when he was doing fully fledged collections. One of my favourites was glasses created for the blind, with drones hovering around. I strong suggest listening to his episode of the SZ podcast. He has incredible wit and a devilish sense of humour. Great vid!
im new to your channel, and ive been watching your techwear content. Mostly you talk about jackets and layering, but I live in texas and it is very hot and humid. Could you make a video about very light and breathable techwear for hot climates
Innovative materials is a huge attractor for me, so things like the apparition leather and phase change cooling boot thing are fascinating. Being able to explore a narrative or provoke the reconsideration of the status quo through a product is peak use of design
I did heard of the ring of designers own skin but i just dismissed it as attention thirsty newbie work from someone who studied art in some big city. Im surprised same person has some genuine good and thought provoking designs
I try to like these types of designers but they all seem to gimmicky for me. At least this guy seems to have a more eco-friendly approach than MSCHF or Balenciaga.
For me the breadth of his work makes it not feel like a gimmick to me, but I totally get individual projects can come across as 1-dimensional (what if we did x, but made it out of y?)
Hi Antwon, I don't mean to be rude. This was generally a good video. But I would like to offer some minor corrections and information. Firstly, regarding Carol Christian Poell- the show you referenced was called "Mainstream-Downstream" and was performed in the Naviglio Canal in Milan, not the river Seine in Paris. It was not part of Paris fashion week. Wrong Trouser's video regarding designer Carol Christian Poell has been good for exposure to the designer, but has numerous errors. Regarding the point you mentioned of - "raising animals just to be used for clothing" - for cow, horse, and lamb leathers- (which combined represent the majority of leather used worldwide) the animals are raised for meat, the skin is just a byproduct. The math does not work out to pay to raise the animals to sufficient size to only use for the skin. The only exceptions to that are for 'exotic' animals like alligators- see Herme's alligator farm for example. Sruli's work is very interesting on many levels- so all respect where it is due- but I have some comments regarding Apparition leather. Regarding any of these translucent leathers, including Apparition- they are similar to rawhide but oiled with glycerin, and 'oily' they are more similar to plastic than leather. It doesn't have many desirable qualities of leather left. They are susceptible to many strange issues due to moisture retention. Simply put, it is a fun gimmick more than a useful material. I can't comment about how expensive it is or isn't to make, but you can buy some translucent horse leather from districtleathers.com right now for about $15 per sqft. I encourage you to experience the material firsthand. When making videos about these niche obscure designers, I strongly encourage reaching out to various communities and doing significant amounts of research to fact check things. It can be extremely difficult to do this research, and many content creators are simply rehashing the same shallow myths and articles over and over again.
are there other „edgy“ designers that dont use all the animal materials? what other interesting thought provoking materials are there that dont include animals? i love ccp and find sruli very interesting but can't get around the killing exotic animals or injecting them with ink while theyre dying part :/
But the only interesting thing abouth these designs are materials tbh, if you want a semi- or totally transparent coat or bag but made out of tpu or whatever there are plenty of them out there
Love Sruli Recht, some very otherworldly and bizarre stuff, I regularly check out if he’s come up with new pieces. Love to see what he can do with some of the weirdest materials. Like whale penis wallet?
when you're going edgy designer for edgy designer and they whip out Sruli Recht
Rare wrong trousers sighting.
Ps I love your carol Christian pol video

Thanks so much! 🙏 Super fun to cover someone a bit different that I don't see getting talked about much online
One of the most interesting and informative fashion videos I’ve watched on RUclips… engaging. Well done Antifreeze

I thought this was going to be like the Frank Ocean cockring, now I am terrified
The “legendary PFW show where they floated models down the Seine” was not in Paris, it was in Italy.
Woah, they put Seine in Italy? 😲
@@Meg_A_Byte Obviously that part is wrong too
Yup my bad! Appreciate the correction - I had PFW on the brain when I wrote the script and just never questioned it
always love your videos and they just keep getting better. like a safe place for me to come and relax every few weeks
This feels like a video that only you could have made, very enjoyable and unique
🙏🙏🙏
Also I like what you're doing with your lighting setup here, having a more oblique angle on your main gives you some nice shadow and dimensionality on your face, looking more pro than the flatter lighting of your earlier videos.
Thanks very much!
I missed you here on youtube Antwon. And you came back with a banger! 😍
Great video Asymmetry! I dont even usually care for topics like this but you present the topic so cleanly that its a very enjoyable experience.

Mengele likes this
Appreciate the info! Tbh that's just as cool, idk why they didn't say that
Got confused by this already since it didn't make sense to me biologically. Thanks for the clarification lmao
‘Just’ 😂
I think the silk producing goats were originally engineered for a project looking to use the silk for bulletproof vests.
Wrong Trousers makes amazing videos
A ring with real human skin is giving some heavy dark souls/ elden ring vibes, like the godskin armor or something 😅
I've been wearing my own foreskin as a ring for years, but nobody's making videos about how cool a designer i am(

Honestly I love the glove idea. Like an unassuming torture device a cenobite from Hellraiser would have

love the research and time you put into this great video

Keep on keeping on
After owning some of carols work, imo the craftsman ship, design, and materials, make the price of his stuff very worth it.
I feel like only Iceland can produce such strangeness

the carol pig bag was not actually injected while the pig was alive, this is a misconception

Meh! Art? Maybe. Self absorbed wankery? Definitely. The Pareto principle applies here, 20% talent/80% Bullshit. Still, I did learn something. Thanks, Antwon.
