Hi Raylinaires! This is the famous aria for Mabel from the Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert and Sullivan. Here are tips, IPA, and the translation (what it actually means in American English). As an opera singer, I have been honored to sing this role over 5 times!!! I must say this is one of the most challenging, yet most fun arias as a fan of Gilbert of Sullivan's with which to work! Tips:
1. Tall vowels - In this English aria, tall pure vowels are a must as to remain open and released "Poor" - sing "Paw", "wand'ring" sing "wAHdrIHng" without the n and a very light r, "one" sing "wAHn" sing the Ah repeated for the full duration and a light n at the end
2. Ritardando - as is customary in performance practices, there is a slight rit. at "Why take it, it is thine", before going to the scales, you may pause after mine! slightly, p. 273 you may rit. at "poor" until the fermata, play with the rhythm a bit if the way your character is portrayed calls for it, before the staccati there may be a slight rit. as well
3. Scales - for the ah scales, it is necessary to take a deep breath and make sure these are legato, each note gets the same vowel "ah", during the smaller notes, you may create different ornamentation. I like to think of this section as showing off to Frederick to say I am the one you want listen to me sing. At the fermata on the E, you may use a "D" in the tempo you want to start at for the next verse to help the piano and if you are in character. For example, instead of hold the E fermata, hold the E fermata for 2 beats and then sing a D to connect to the C of "Poor" without a breath. Make sure to breathe deeply before doing this. It's a very coquettish phrase, but it works wonders if your character allures Frederick and then sings the D and goes right back to "not caring".
4. staccati - keep an open throat and breathe support, it should feel like you are laughing with your diaphragm while staying supported, remember each note gets a vowel, keep this light and bright
5. cadenza - a cadenza is where Mabel shines, it is the "money note" especially if you do the possible cadenza, although you may create your own, coordinate this with your accompanist. I would use a portamento after the E flat 6 to give the accompanist a tempo.
