this is HYPNOTIZING. the human voice is perhaps one of the most pure forms of music, as it's 100% natural and 100% human and her voice tells STORIES and brings another world to you. what an amazing experience to listen to this :)
This is simply the finest version of Poor Wand'ring One that you will find on RUclips. The clarity and tone is superb and unlike any other version you will find on here. I could listen to this all day long.
Everyone is judging her on the fact that she is not a actor or comedian. This is a concert she clearly likes the song. She is simply singing it. I'm sure if she was doing the play she would sing it in a more comedic way.
Actually, it was written as a parody. G&S were poking fun at sopranos. It's an especially challenging song to sing because of the way it is written. Victoria does a beautiful job in this concert setting. As someone who has performed the role, it is a blast to punch up the tongue in cheek aspects that were intended by G&S. :)
Beautifully sung,an ideal tone of voice, and technique for Mabel. She conquers all the problems that this particular aria has. Mabel overall is a difficult role, and this aria in paricular requires a certain type of voice. An almost mezzo bottom and middle to the voice, and yet with a coloratura top, which is why few sopranos can do it justice. I don't know this singer but she manages all the problems of the aria with ease, and even more brings a passion to the sound that she produces! Well done.
I'm learning this piece right now with my voice teacher and have been trying to sift through the many different performances to find a decent one...FOUND IT. She's wonderful! :D
this sounds so increiblely amazing i wish my voice could sound as clear as her's i also want to make all that amazing vibrato chords. Amazing job Victoria Joyce
First I must apologise that I don't know who Victoria Joyce is? Secondly, what a wonderful interpretation of this aria! If only all singers would approach G&S in this way, singing it "straight" and not mucking about with the tempi or the musical dynamics. Well done Ms Joyce, and a big thank you to maulwurfchen for posting this clip.
@PotterKnowItAll as others have said yes it is possible, i am nearly 16 and working on singing this, but just be awsare that it depends on which exam board you take, it is actually a grade 8 piece with Trinity Colledge London :) Work throughvocal exercises over time to expand yoour range but never force your voice. good luck.
High notes.... it's a matter of having them or not. Some voices have them, some don't. Beyond the high notes, what is much more important is to have the technique to sing such a piece without hurting the voice; and it is a case-by-case decision whether a piece is appropriate for a certain voice at one age or another. Hope your performance went well!
If she's that outstanding now, think of how unearthly good she'd be if she relaxed into that high e flat... Wow. Wonderful recording. I LOVE this aria.
If I could even pretend to sing half as well as that, I'd live out my life happily. This is too beautiful for words. And fuck everyone who is complaining about the tone... :D
@PotterKnowItAll has nothing to do with whether a 15 year old can do it or not...the end here was improvised...its about if your voice is able to do it or not without hurting/forcing yourself :]
MrPoochsmooch, I'm new to G&S music but you realize it is an operetta right? To say it needs actors and comedians instead of sings sounds kind of...dumb.
@glamyliciousruthie the high notes you have doesnt make you a soprano....I used to have a mezzo soprano colleague who could hit the D above high C but she was definitely not comfortable up that high which is why she is a mezzo....vocal type has to deal with the color of the voice and where it is most comfortable at without strain
damn this song is freakin hard.... i have to sing it for my vocal teacher and i can hardly hit that high D in the runs.... :P wish i could sing it as effortlessly as Victoria does :)
Thank you for posting this. I looked up the Helen Donaldson version and she is absolute perfection in her rendition of this very difficult aria. The sustained high E is magical. Unfortunately, the production--a 4th rate doo-wop trashing of Gilbert and Sullivan-- is a travesty.
Beautiful, but the part calls for an ingenue, and Ms. Joyce sounds mature and in control. Say what you will, and despite the mediocre and amateurish rendition, Ms. Ronstadt made a better wide eyed innocent.
@@taggartlawfirm Since I mentioned that she did not sing what Sullivan wrote, and he wrote the music, it wouldn't be the words. And no, you can't safely call it "interpretation" when she sang it down a third, and scooped and slid her way through the parts she did sing. Here's what she herself said about it:
Oh Christ, another example of G&S being OVERSUNG! This is a fine SINGER but the movie TOPSY TURVY shows the original intent of the authors: ACTORS who could sing. In fact the oldest recordings you can find of G&S from the 20's-40's have performers with much simpler and CLEARER voices. At some point this style changed for the D'Oyly Carte records from the 60's used opera singers. G&S needs actors & comedians, not singers. If G&S saw Linda Ronstadt in 1979 doing PIRATES they would have loved it.
Her technique is flawless and the coloratura parts are divine. Gorgeous!
Even some 8 years later Victoria Joyce has one of the purest coloratura voices I have ever heard.

This is incredible! Such beautiful control. And that high E! She has such a strong stage presence, too.
High Eb.
This makes my heart soar. She sings this song so beautifully!
Marvelous voice,so clear like a bell. This is how it should be sung.
Absolutely 👍

It's not a comedy song; not every G&S piece is supposed to be funny. Her interpretation is right in line with G&S wrote.
Actually, it was written as a parody. G&S were poking fun at sopranos. It's an especially challenging song to sing because of the way it is written. Fantastic singing from Victoria .

Well done.
I sang this all the time when I was about 15 or 16 and had just discovered Pirates of Penzance! The D'Oyly Carte recording.
This is so beautiful! My 3 month old loves it too. He gets so excited when he hears it!
Victoria Joyce does a splendid job! Best version!
The first time I have heard her. I love G&S and she sings this aria magnificently. This a great voice! Incredible!
gorgeous. Sullivan was a genius, and she interprets the notes so effortlessly to my ears. Great stuff.
this song is so hard to sing and she makes it looks so easy! beautiful job!
Yes, totally brilliant, thanks
beautiful voice beyond words!!
She nailed it. Amazing coloratura!
Beautiful rendition of a classic.....Pirates is my favorite G&S....I have it memorized....
well, almost......
I'm learning this piece right now with my voice teacher and have been trying to sift through the many different performances to find a decent one...FOUND IT. She's wonderful! :D
You make me proud to be singing this song
this sounds so increiblely amazing i wish my voice could sound as clear as her's i also want to make all that amazing vibrato chords. Amazing job Victoria Joyce
What a divine voice!
Wow!! Outstanding!!!!
Fingers crossed we’re going to see Victoria in August at Castle Howard
This is amazing!!!! Well done!
Wow. If I can improve in my singing to such an extent to sing this comfortably, I so want to do this song. Absolutely awesome.
Gorgeous!!!!!!
Beautiful.
BRILLIANT!
@MrSwifts31 I've seen this done several times, including at my own high school. This is perhaps the best I've seen and heard it yet.
LOVE HER VOICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful!
First I must apologise that I don't know who Victoria Joyce is?

It is a wonderful rendition. All this nonsense about being oversung. Just enjoy it. Neither of you can do any better.
Excellent rendition! I think even Valerie Masterson would have enjoyed this sumptuous voice and perfect timing.
she has that turning barell in her head, that is so technical, wow
Yay Grade 8 singing has brought me here. Help.
Daisy Kitty same i cannot decide if i’m glad or not
Chills! She is amazing!! =D
Lovely.
I agree with the majority on this one. Excellent .
I am spellbound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
You are so right!!!
she was undoubtedly the finest I have heard.
very, very well done.
Peyton' s most favorite song from the movie THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE!
this girl gots skills!

wonderful =D
If I was re-casting this show.. And she tried out for Mabel, I'd be like BAM there she is. xD
Holy motherfuck she destroyed that.
If she's that outstanding now, think of how unearthly good she'd be if she relaxed into that high e flat... Wow. Wonderful recording.
I LOVE this aria.
She's not a coloratura soprano, which is why the Eb is a tiny bit effortful. For a lyric soprano, she manages her extreme top very well.
I sung this in my singing lessons, with enough practice maybe I'll be as good as this :')
I think I am in love.
Best Poor Wand'ring One!
Splendid! But where is poor Frederick?
If I could even pretend to sing half as well as that, I'd live out my life happily. This is too beautiful for words. And fuck everyone who is complaining about the tone...
:D

Wow.
Exactly...
im learning this song. i can sing sorta like her, but that REALLLY REALLLLLLY high note, idk if i can hit it
OK, I'd go to the crossroads at midnight and make the deal with the Prince of Darkness if I could do this. Burning for all eternity? Worth it.
the hand that rocks the cradle brought me here
"An American Tail" brought me here.
There's some weird editting in this video... What happened at the 'Ah' runs?
too rich? Surely you mean a different adjective. No one has ever objected to a voice being "rich".
The hand that rocks the cradle...like if you know what i am referring to (:
I still thnk Helen Donaldson did this song the best justice in Simon Gallaher's production of Pirates of Penzance
An American Tail
I mean mabel is suppose to be sort of showing off (;
Good Luck. I am sure it will be pretty!!!!!!
Why did Florence Foster Jenkins never record this?
MrPoochsmooch, I'm new to G&S music but you realize it is an operetta right? To say it needs actors and comedians instead of sings sounds kind of...dumb.
mary bernadette yes, we know, you know it’s an operETTA ?? Meaning light fluffy and somewhat whimsical.
Juliet's Waltz, anyone?
amazing stage presence! could use more support vocally though.

I think she's get in the Carla Rosa
or the Doily Carte
damn this song is freakin hard.... i have to sing it for my vocal teacher and i can hardly hit that high D in the runs.... :P wish i could sing it as effortlessly as Victoria does :)
Compare this excellent version to that of Linda Ronstadt and see the difference
"clearer"? What do you mean by that. I think her voice has no lack of clarity.
Victoria re-Joyce much? :D
chingona
Peyton Flanders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*singers
Nice job but Helen Donaldson is even better with sustained top E.

@wildthings65 Ab?
Beautiful, but the part calls for an ingenue, and Ms. Joyce sounds mature and in control. Say what you will, and despite the mediocre and amateurish rendition, Ms. Ronstadt made a better wide eyed innocent.
She does, if you don't care about her actually singing what Sullivan wrote!
Elise Curran what do you mean? The words? The key? Whichever you mean, I think we can safely consider it falling under artistic interpretation.
@@taggartlawfirm Since I mentioned that she did not sing what Sullivan wrote, and he wrote the music, it wouldn't be the words. Her technique isn't great, but WHO CARES! Her voice is amazing, flawless and beautiful! =)
5 people are tone deaf.
Effortless!

I'd try to educate you...but if you think the actors from topsy turvy could sing at all, God help you...
what a load of shit.
Her voice is too rich to be Mabel's.
disappointed
Not very good, is she
Boxjuice , oh shut up.
nah, she's great. your ears are shitty
