I feel like she could have been an amazing soprano star!! Her voice is truly unique and powerful! I have been watching this video since ot was posted 10 years ago and am still as obsessed as ever! Something about her charm and presence and voice is so captivating! I read somewhere she understudied as Christine in Phantom, meanwhile her voice is almost too good for that role! Love her!
I'm so insanely jealous of her voice. She gets up to dog whistle-like notes without any trouble at all. And it's so clear and beautiful. And my jealousy isn't helped by the fact that she's gorgeous. *sigh*
I went to opening night of this play last night. My brother is Major General. The girl who played Mabel was INCREDIBLE. She easy hit every note in this song.
Poor wandering one Though thou hast surely strayed Take heart of grace, thy steps retrace Poor wandering one Poor wandering one If such poor love as mine Can help thee find true peace of mind Why, take it, it is thine Take heart, no danger lowers Take any heart but ours Take heart, fair days will shine Take any heart, take mine Take heart, no danger lowers Take any heart but ours Take heart, fair days will shine Take any heart, take mine Poor wandering one Though thou hast surely strayed Take heart of grace, thy steps retrace Poor wandering one Poor wandering one Poor wandering one Take heart, take heart Take any heart but ours Take heart, take heart Take heart, no danger lowers Take any heart but ours Take heart, take heart Take any heart but ours Take heart
I remember seeing my late elder sister's school, North London Collegiate School production of Pirates in 1956 and since then I have adored the melodies & humour of G&S
i never really liked opera until i discovered the pirates of penzance and of course Helen she has the most amazing voice and i cant stop listening to her and the poor wandering ones
Amazing voice! I played Mabel in a school production many years ago. This brings back so many memories. I wish I could still hit those high notes.....but her soprano is outstanding!
My voice teacher just assigned me this piece. wow. I have no idea how I'm going to make this song look that easy!! I have lots of work to do! in the words of sweetsoprano92: =O
I love this so much. Such a fantastic scene. Not only because she is a fabulous singer, but because she gets to do basically what he had done just previously to her sisters - be like "Look at me and my fabulousness while you stand there and watch me and wait". Take that, Fred :D.
Wait. Drums? "Shoop-shoop?" Well, now I wanna see this version! Also, those cadenzas?! Girl looked at her watch and said, "Y'all didn't have anywhere to be, right?"
This is one of my favorite performances of that piece - great comic timing. Best Mabel I think - great combination of voice and comic talents. There are certainly voices who are more perfect, but after all, this is Gilbert and Sullivan, not Barbiere! Great performance!
@keckm88 Just confirmed by playing along on a keyboard - it is scored for Db, but she cheekily reaches up to Eb on two occasions (1:28 - 1:30 and 3:29 - 3:33).
Thank you! I finally actually understand the piece. I haven't seen anyone else portray the actual point of the song - thank you for being the first person I've seen to actually tell the story.
I just found out my high school is gonig to be donig this next year, and lately I have really been trying ot improve my soprano singing voice, and this now is just completel motivation!
Poor wand'ring one! Though thou hast surely strayed Take heart of grace Thy steps retrace Poor wand'ring one! Poor wand'ring one! If such poor love as mine Can help thee find True peace of mind Why, take it, it is thine!
+tigrrr12 This is, in my personal experience., among the greatest ever songs written. Such amazing music to back some the loveliest lyrics to come from the marriage of Pen and Paper. Her voice is is so clean and rich and that solo was just Epic. Thank you so very much for uploading this version to share with us all.
keep in mind people that productions like these cost money...and that orchestras can cost a lot of money...and unfortunately...there is something known as a 'budget' I still think it's a fantastic performance.
@bmrhea92 I had a friend who sang this role. I asked her how on earth she did the staccato. She showed me by twitching her diaphragm like crazy. I could see it going up and down under her shirt!
@keckm88 No, the music actually is written with an optional ending at the bottom for sopranos who are daring, which is why it's acapella, but nonetheless, that was an awesome E flat
i love when performers actually take cadenzas! It's upsetting how easy she makes this song sound. Her voice is perfect for this role.
She sings the high notes very well in the Take Heart passage, each note clear and not all sliding into each other. That is how it should be sung.
This is a voice against which I will now have to judge all others.

lol i love how he drops his bag when she hits the high note in the middle XDD
I'm so insanely jealous of her voice. She gets up to dog whistle-like notes without any trouble at all. And it's so clear and beautiful. And my jealousy isn't helped by the fact that she's gorgeous. *sigh*
Just when you think she can't possibly get any higher ... WOW! Sends shivers down my spine every time!
Lovely singing from this beautiful soprano. She has bell-like tones.
I'm auditioning for Mabel tomorrow. I'm singing this song for it.

Poor Simon! I am as in awe as he. She is perfection.
Magical voice, how lucky we are to hear her sing. Awesome.

Helen Donaldson, the voice of an angel
I aspire to sing like Helen Donaldson. HOLY GEEZ she is so talented!
the last nights to this song always remind me of The cadenza in Phantom (Think of Me)

Amazing voice! I played Mabel in a school production many years ago. This brings back so many memories. I wish I could still hit those high notes.....but her soprano is outstanding!
A wonderful production..so many wonderful memories!
That was incredible. It will remain a regret that i didn't get to see that in person. Wow. Love it.
Her and Crawford. I would take a duet with them over about any other two on earth. Absolutely incredible voice
This is my favorite "You Tube" version of this song. She is awesome!
My voice teacher just assigned me this piece. wow. I have no idea how I'm going to make this song look that easy!! I have lots of work to do! in the words of sweetsoprano92: =O

wow..i agree for the most part on the orchestrations...but her voice...oh my god! unbelievable!! what a gift she has!
I'm so grateful I can hit this high E like she does. Too bad I'm too old to audition for Mabel.
Wait. Drums? "Shoop-shoop?" Well, now I wanna see this version! Also, those cadenzas?! Girl looked at her watch and said, "Y'all didn't have anywhere to be, right?"

She's fantastic! and a lovely actress too. I don't care for the modern orchestrations but the performances are wonderful.
By far of all the voices singing this song on RUclips. She is my favorite to listen to :)
This is one of my favorite performances of that piece - great comic timing. Best Mabel I think - great combination of voice and comic talents. There are certainly voices who are more perfect, but after all, this is Gilbert and Sullivan, not Barbiere! Great performance!

Obsessed with this whole performance.
The best I have heard!
Wow! She's special.
I love this performance.
Holy moley! What a voice!
@keckm88 Just confirmed by playing along on a keyboard - it is scored for Db, but she cheekily reaches up to Eb on two occasions (1:28 - 1:30 and 3:29 - 3:33).
1:28 is actually Db, but impressive nevertheless
Helen Donaldson is WONDERFUL!!!!
This was absolutely amazing. I wish I sounded like this.
Lovely rich voice. Magnificent!
I'm playing this for one of my friends. She has an AMAZING voice! :D
Captivating
Thank you! I finally actually understand the piece. I haven't seen anyone else portray the actual point of the song - thank you for being the first person I've seen to actually tell the story.
She's amazing!

its an aussie version, very funny, fantastic , i`m sure G and S would have approved!
Me. too. I have looked all over the internet for it to buy...if you happen to know who owns the rights, please share!
Look at her support at 2:26. You can see it through her dress. Crazy. I love it.
So silly and fun. :D
I love the part where the guy twiddles his fingers in time to the music. I hope his voice is as good as his acting. :)
The hand that rocks the cradle:-)
She makes it look so easy 😭😭😭
keep in mind people that productions like these cost money...and that orchestras can cost a lot of money...and unfortunately...there is something known as a 'budget'
I still think it's a fantastic performance.
can i take her voice box from my computer?
@bmrhea92 I had a friend who sang this role. I asked her how on earth she did the staccato. She showed me by twitching her diaphragm like crazy. I could see it going up and down under her shirt!
Dogs came running!

@keckm88 No, the music actually is written with an optional ending at the bottom for sopranos who are daring, which is why it's acapella, but nonetheless, that was an awesome E flat
I'm working on this play right now at my school. :3
Oh, my God. I think an angel dropped from heaven, dressed up in Mabel's costume, and sang this. But they made it very funny, too!
I had no IDEA that Chris Farley played one of Mabel's sisters!
AH. I got this part. I'm going to need to work REEAALLY hard..
my favorite part is when he drops the bag.
