I like Syrax and Caraxes designs but I LOVE Drogon. I think it’s the best dragon design ever put on screen. The HOTD dragons look more regal and beautiful, like something out of a kids fantasy movie…Drogon looks legitimately terrifying. When you get up close he looks so grotesque and gritty, it feels like if dragons were ever real that’s what they looked like…you feel like you’re looking at a real, wild animal that actually existed. Whatever breed Drogon is, that’s my favorite, it translates better to the screen. His scales and spikes make rhe CGI harder to detect and make him look more realistic. But I’m definitely not complaining about the new ones. Drogon was just iconic

Drogon cannot be bigger than Caraxes. It's impossible because dragons never stop growing and they older they are, the bigger they get. Drogon was a few years old, at most around 7-8, while Caraxes is around 40 right now, and will grow even bigger (at the time of his death he will be over 60 years old). As for Syrax, she is more or less around Drogon's age, so she is either comparable in size or most probably a little bit smaller (due to the factor that you mentioned - her residing in the pit). However at the moment of her death she will be over 30 and considered "large and formidable", therefore she will surely outgrow Drogon's current size.

@@semajbrown259 Still it's impossible for Drogon to be bigger than Caraxes, the age gap is too big. Caraxes was always considered a huge and fearsome dragon, only half the size of Vhagar who was the biggest dragon of her time (only Balerion was bigger than her). If Drogon reaches 40-60 he might be as big as Caraxes was or even bigger, but for now there is dozens of years of difference between them. Even if Drogon's growth rate was twice as fast as that of Caraxes, it's impossible for him to be larger than a 40 year old dragon if he is only 7.

Guys gotta remember the actual Dance of the Dragons hasn't begun yet, and there's still a time jump to come in the show, so both Syrax and Caraxes will be even larger again. I would also like to point out that both dragons were formidable, fearsome and deadly mounts for their riders during the Dance and I honestly don't think that either of Danys dragons would of lasted long in a fight against either of these 2 at their peak, purely based on battle experience alone, size doesn't even come into it. (If you know you know). Vhagar was one of the most deadly dragons (ridden first by Queen Visenya during Aegons conquest and if they follow storyline then currently Aemond Targaryen for the Dance) and is also a she-dragon and she was responsible for killing many battle experienced dragons and riders, and was, in my opinion, the most pivotal dragon in Aegons conquest (and the Dance), taking many towns and cities and turning the tide many times just by her presence alone as many feared her, and not just the people either. If you really want to talk about size, I can't wait to see Vhagar onscreen because she was said to have grown to be as big as what Balerion was at the time of his death at the end of Aegons Conquest, by the time the Dance begins. (As she was the only one of the 3 original Targaryen dragons who survived the conquest and lived to see the Dance) and just seeing how people went on about Balerions skull size and "how big he must have been" and "how big Drogon could have been", well if House of the Dragon follows the story and I don't see why they shouldn't (since Aemond has been cast and that was her rider during the Dance) then when we will finally see Vhagar/a dragon finally capable of living up to the name. Vhagar, the Terror of the Trident! Also, not sure how they can't have her in it because some serious sh*t happens towards the end with one of the main characters and she's prettttty pivotal in that too so 🤣🤣 (if you know you know lol) which also goes back to size doesn't matter.

@@ishmael_03 it's not all about size 🙄 if you think so you clearly never read any of the books, yeah it helped *sometimes but it wasn't everything (how did Vhagar die?) Because it could also be a hindrance. Also, Drogon wasn't the 2nd biggest dragon, not even close you clearly ignored every thing I wrote. He was much smaller than Vhagar and even Meraxes, who was bigger than Vhagar was in her prime (the beginning of the conquest Meraxes was not much smaller than Balerion) the order of size of the 3 original Targaryen dragons when they FIRST came to Westeros for the CONQUEST was Balerion, Meraxes then Vhagar.
Meraxes was unfortunately slain and Balerion grew old and feable and Vhagar continued to grow into the fearsome battle beast people continued to fear until the day she died and she was KNOWN to be the LARGEST living dragon and to have MATCHED Balerion in size by the time of her death. MEANING VHAGAR was the largest dragon of HER time and also alongside BALERION!!
Seriously how hard is that to comprehend and understand for you lot? Probably because most of you are just GoT fanatics and literally haven't read a word of the literature and literally don't know or just refuse to realise that Vhagar who was Balerions sister for all intents and purposes, could possibly have matched his "greatness". Yes for a lot of people it was HER who was the one who turned the tide many times and was the key to Aegons conquest being successful NOT Balerion, the only reason Balerion gets the recognition is because he was the one ridden by Aegon.
Also to even think for a second that Drogon or any of Danys dragons hold a flame to even any of the OG Targaryen dragons, is a joke. Danys dragons are literally children, immature children (literally) who if they even went into a real battle against a real battle experienced war dragon like Vhagar, they would of gone down in a pile. Ive said it before and ill say it again, its not ALL about size, its about experience as well, because sometimes size can be a hindrance whether it be big or small. Vhagar used her size and experienced many times against her younger opponents, yet when they used their size against her (meaning their speed because they were quicker as she was LARGER, bigger isn't always better) she would use her EXPERIENCE to then defeat them, depending on the WEATHER, she would use her size then with the wind as a stronger wind current carries a bigger body/wings quicker than a smaller body. A larger dragon isn't necessarily a "better" dragon. I've already said, Balerion was all but usless in the last few years of his life and couldn't barely even fly, he hadn't fought for many years and didn't have the battle experience as an older dragon like Vhagar did, she knew exactly how to take down the young ones and she did it well, not only because she was battle hardened from over probably thousands of battles at this point but she had the EXPERIENCE to do so. Thats part of the reason she was used during the Dance, she should of been retired like Balerion was at the end of his days, but the "Greens" needed an advantage and she was it and she definitely gave it to them. Stop trying to act like a Dragon whose only like a year old in the books and was what not even 10 by the end of the tv series, is even in the same league as any of the dragons from the Dance. Especially a dragon who was 180 years old (you do realise that definitely means shes bigger in dragon terms right? I mean is that simple enough for you?) Until GRRMartin actually finishes his work, we won't ever see the true full potential of any of Danys dragons, because spoiler alert, they're ALL still alive in the book. For all we know just because of what D&D did to the show, Martin could decide to completely nuke Drogon and have the other 2 take the spotlight. Which wouldn't surprise me at all.

Caraxes is by far my favorite, what I find strange is that Dragon, Caraxes and Syrax have really different anatomy, Dragon is closer to Syrax than Caraxes but his head is still really different. I don't know the reason of this choice, in the book all the dragons are from the same specie, the only differences are size and colour so ... but it is true that we have different draw of Balerion that are sometimes closer to Dragon and other to Caraxes (both in the series) so ...
The other point is that Caraxes is approximatively 30-40 years old while drogon is only around 20 years old, but
    1) dragons are growing relatively slowly
    2) drogon was free while Caraxes was in Fossedragon

"In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, Caraxes was one of the older and larger dragons during the Dance of the Dragons. His scales were colored red, leading to him being called "the Blood Wyrm".
Daemon Targaryen rode Caraxes in his frequent campaigns in the Stepstones. As a result Caraxes was not only one of the larger dragons during the Dance, but possibly the most battle-hardened and experienced in war. Indeed, only Vhagar had ever been ridden in major wars before, due to the eighty years of peace the realm had enjoyed since King Maegor the Cruel died - and Vhagar, while formidable, had not been used in combat in the years leading up to the Dance, the way that Caraxes was. Opposing armies were known to often simply flee when Caraxes approached.
When Rhaenyra captured King's Landing in a surprise attack, Daemon rode Caraxes in the assault while Rhaenyra rode Syrax.
Later in the war, Aegon II's younger brother Aemond Targaryen resorted to a one-man war riding Vhagar, burning out much of the Riverlands. Daemon hunted him for a long time on Caraxes, aided by the dragonrider Nettles on Sheepstealer, but eventually he returned alone to Harrenhal (which Vhagar had burned out earlier in the war) waiting as a challenge for Aemond to arrive. Caraxes was formidable but Vhagar was twice his size, nearly as large as Balerion had been during the War of Conquest. Facing him alone was the only way to draw Vhagar out, however, as Aemond had avoided ambushes by multiple other dragons. Aemond arrived, exchanged his final challenges to Daemon, then both took to the air on their dragons.
The resulting Battle Above the Gods Eye was one of the most epic dragon-versus-dragon fights of the entire civil war, as two of the greatest living dragons fought in the air. Their shrieks shattered every remaining window in the castle and could be heard for miles around. Their fire-breath filled the sky so that fishermen in the lake thought that the whole sky was aflame. In the end, Caraxes dove down from the sun on Aemond's blind side (due to his missing eye). Caraxes slammed into Vhagar and they both continued to fight in free fall. Vhagar tore out Caraxes's belly, and used her massive jaws to rip one of his wing-arms completely off - but Caraxes sank his teeth into Vhagar's throat and maintained a death grip. As the two dragons grappled, Daemon rose from his saddle and made a stunning mid-air leap from his dragon to Aemond on Vhagar's back. Wielding the Valyrian steel sword Dark Sister (which had once been carried by Vhagar's previous rider, Visenya Targaryen, Daemon thrust his blade through Aemond's empty eye socket - the force of his impact as he landed driving the sword through the back of Aemond's head. Both dragons plummeted into Gods Eye below. Nothing could have survived the fall and nothing did: Caraxes had ripped out Vhagar's throat and she bore the brunt of the impact, killing her. Daemon's corpse was never found, but Aemond's was found years later with Dark Sister still thrust through it. Caraxes, somehow, was still alive after his massive injures and the fall, but not for long. Missing a wing and with his intestines trailing behind him out of his open belly, he somehow found the strength to pull himself out of the lake onto the shore, where the dragon soon died before the walls of Harrenhal. The battle was a heavy blow for both Rhaenyra's and Aegon II's factions: each side lost one of their greatest champions, as well as each side's strongest dragon. The world has not seen their like again."

It actually makes sense for Drogon to be much larger than Caraxes as we know based on what’s been stated in the books that dragons can have their growth stunted if kept under close quarters which during Caraxes and Syrax time they were being held in the dragon pit. Drogon was free so he was able to develop more quickly because he was free feeding himself throughout the series. Unlike Drogon’s siblings, he hadn’t been kept chained up for a year under the pyramids. It’s actually implied that keeping the dragons enclosed was part of the reason for their downfall.

Caraxes and Syrax looks definitively better than the dragons from the last show. They have more details. Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion barely had any distinct features to them. As a matter of fact, if not for reading I wouldn't have even known that the 3 of them actually had colors. Its barely recognizable when you watch. He looks MUCH larger in that shot, there are two people on his back and they don't even take as much space as Dany does alone... I can firmly say that Caraxes is at least 140 to 170 feet long/40 to 50 meters long.
