Matur suksma Winnie very good vlog. Interesting to see other parts of Indonesia. I wish I was 30 - 40 years younger and had the strength to see more of Indonesia. As of now, I have only been to Lombok in 2002 outside Bali and visited the Sasak village, among other things, which was interesting. And then once in Jakarta 9 years ago. Hope you can do more vlogs outside of Bali in your work. Stay safe and take care.

Looked like a quite dry place already from the plane's view but still surprising water needs to be fetched and carried over long distances. That's like African conditions... Thanks for explaining that cuz my initial thought was "hey girl, skipping class today?" hehe Clean simple hotel and relaxing place by the beach. Nice vlog!

Hi Winnie, I have travelled to Sumba Island a few times and stayed at Mr Martins homestay at Tarimbang Bay.
Thanks for sharing, I would love to go back there again, such wonderful people and have some amazing stories to tell.
I can remember possibly 20 years ago visiting the school at Tarimbang and taking some photos of the teachers and children, then going back the following year and presenting the framed photos to the school to hang on there walls.

Hello Winny...I think this is the first vlog that I've seen that you've done solo (no Damian)...wow, very interesting and as some of your subscribers have mentioned, a real eye opener to see other far-flung islands of the Indonesian group. While Sumba Island appears to be a little more primitive to Bali and other islands, it's great to see that you, as an educator, get the opportunity to visit remote locations and assess and recommend ways of improving the education standard....a very essential role you are playing, great stuff!!

I'm sorry for long comment but I feel like I have to say it...
I actually don't like how foreigners who visit Sumba interpret this island on social media. It's just that with this way, it's getting to attract more and more tourists living/staying or coming from Bali, but they don't come here because of that unique culture but for Instagram spots. And that's sad because Sumba offers a lot. Sumba is incredibly rich in culture, adat and there is nothing better than spending time with the locals in the village, in a traditional house, trying betel for first time and in the night listening to one of these stories of elders about how people first time came to this island, what means sun and moon to them or how they used to do that "honor killing" only several decades ago.
The fact that most of the "bule" are promoting Sumba after a few days' stay in Nihiwatu or similar expensive resort will attract more tourists to visit this island (which Sumba deserves), but unfortunately it does not attract the right type of tourists / travelers. I am terribly afraid that soon Sumba will become what Labuan Bajo or Lombok became. Just a "little bit more adventurous Bali". Because Bali is already too small to these tourists and is getting to be overlooked.
And that makes me quite sad. Especially because I remember how adventurous Sumba was 10 years ago and because I can compare west (touristic) and east (almost no tourists here). I'm so happy I live far from the west...

But I'm sure if you can check it, you wouldn't find this comment elsewhere because I just wrote it while watching your vid. Many people just commented "interesting video / real Indonesia / thanks for sharing," but just because I got angry about something your video reminded me of, you automatically think I didn't watch it...
Anyway... what I should comment on? How is life in Sumba? How do people live there? That that poor girl with gallons of water had to walk far? Well, I'm sorry I didn't but that's not surprising for me because I live here. Just be happy that people watch your video and comment on it. You don't need to judge.

wow what a great video. I did not think this could remind me of home when we were growing up and we had to travel to get water everyday in 20 litres plus walk 30 plus to get to school. Life was simple in those days . Thanks for sharing. How good is Bali education system compare to other countries in your own opinion
