I don't know if there are Tamil-speaking people watching this one. When I watched 'Saawariya' for the first time in 2007, I was taken back immediately to a 2003 Tamil film called 'Iyarkai', spelt on-screen as 'Eiyarkai' (meaning 'Nature'). Saawariya's plot was exactly the same as Iyarkai's, to the point that I, a 17-year-old then, could easily predict what would happen next.
The film, directed by the late Mr S.P. Jananathan, starred Shyam, Radhika Kumaraswamy and Arun Vijay (then credited as Arun Kumar). 'Iyarkai' also featured the stalwart Seema Biswas in an important part. The film went on to win the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil at the 51st National Film Awards the following year, and gradually grew among the masses as a cult-classic heartbreaker.
It had always irked me that Mr Bhansali didn't credit Mr Jananathan despite using the same story, albeit in a different backdrop. It wasn't until recently that I came to know how both 'Saawariya' and 'Iyarkai' are an adaptation of the Dostoevsky short story 'White Nights'. Well, my unrest was finally put to rest! :)
I have always been an ardent fan of cinema, proud of having had the opportunity of watching some of the best films in the world as well as the patience to watch some of the worst ones ever! The more outlandish and offbeat the premise or set-up or any little feature of a film is, the more I'm interested in it! And as someone who hasn't spared films like 'Bhaag Johnny Bhaag' (Hindi) or 'Ivanukku Thanniyila Gandam' (Tamil) in the theatres, 'Saawariya' was definitely not a bad one!

Please do a retake on Agent Vinod! I think it is a gem of a movie that went underappreciated. I really think it is one of the best works of Sriram Raghavan and also one of the best espionage movies from India. There are so many aspects to it which can be considered unusual but that makes it even more beautiful. I had read a comment on a video by Akash Srivastava discussing about the movie which I completely resonated with. I'm copy pasting some of what he had written to convince you guys: First and foremost, you have to understand Sriram Raghavan, and his body of work, to fully figure out the theme he's going for. He's known for themes where he references 60's Bollywood movies (Vijay Anand and others), the bomb under the table technique by Hitchcock (where the audience know the secret but the characters don't), and biblical justice. This entire film is filled with numerous references to 60's Hindi movies, including the title itself. Second, this is the best we can think of a James Bond equivalent in Indian terms. Bond movies are supposed to be cheesy and spectacle/set piece based. Agent Vinod still has a really good plot, except maybe the final few bits. Third, it employs another 80's/90's technique which was mostly seen in Rajeev Rai's movies (Tridev/Vishwatma/Mohra/Gupt), which is a large assembly of villains. Characters of Adil Hussain, Prem Chopra, Ram Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Shahbaz Khan, Lalit Parimoo, and finally Dhritiman Chaterji are all unique and formidable villains. It's very referential and in some ways also pays tribute to the pulp action movie/novels of the '80s. Finally, it also pays tribute to Raghavan's own history. He used to write for TV earlier, specifically for CID. In the end, it also tried to subvert the traditional action villain genre a little. There is a small line by Gulshan Grover, who plays this big shot Pakistani terrorist/smuggler who when gets the answer of what is the consignment as 'the usual, RDX' or something, retorts "Bore nahi hote tum log?". To me, that's just smart.
Hope you watch it and review it. Really looking forward for both your takes on it!

5:24: The conversation between Gulabji and the landlady was quite interesting: Gulabji says a sex worker’s body is no different (or less dignified) than a house on rent.
18:30: “You don’t go up against Shah Rukh Khan no matter what your product is.” Only in the mid- to late 2000s was this somewhat true. Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai did better than SRK’s Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani in 2000. SLB’s own Bajirao Mastani beat SRK’s Dilwale in 2015. As the Khans’ stardom continues to wane, a good product will win against any of their mediocre films today, fortunately.
Thanks for the Saawariya retake, though. Some great points by Rahul. The film deserves an even deeper discussion, especially the music, cinematography, and Rani’s Gulabji.

I'm gonna leave this comment here just because it hurts my soul to know that "Saawariya" was a massive flop back then and, to this day, very under appreciated.
I'm spanish and I saw this movie for the first time this summer. I loved the movie so much that I've ended buying it in BlueRay and rewatching it a bunch of times for the last few months. I don't see anything wrong with the movie, it just works and speaks to me in a deep personal level. It's so traditionally ROMANTIC and MELLANCHOLIC. The music is OUSTANDING and the visuals are jaw drooping gorgeus, the world of the movie is so rich, textured, seductive and misterious in a way. During "Yoon Shabnami" I was in tears just because of the level of beauty and craftmanship displayed on the screen. I've never seen a movie like this. And I love both Rambir and Soonam in their roles. I'm more familiar with Rambir as an actor and I like him a lot, but Soonam was a surprise for me. Maybe its because I'm a foreigner and a newby in hindi cinema but I find her quite charming in the few things I've seen from her. She's so perfect and beautiful in "Saawariya", so dreamy, she seems so fragile and sad that... it hurts. When Sakina cries, I cry too. I want her to be happy!!!😂
She's like the definitive embodinent of the sad/misterious girl male romantic fantasy and I know that It can be seen as a tiring cliché, but for me It works perfectly in this movie because the story itself is quite simple and innocent. It's so quintaesencial, so rooted in his own essence, but emotionally magnified by the grandeur of the sets and the music. It feels like an eternal dream and I adore it 💙💙💙

I was 17 when Saawriyaa was released and I remember vividly that I was just mesmerised by the beauty of SLB's world I mean sure I have watched Devdas before Saawriyaa and yes Om Shanti Om was a fun movie as compared to this but the beauty and asthetics of this movie was literally like a beautiful dream. Om Shanti Om on the other hand had Deepika and I was enchanted by her beauty when the trailer was released of Ajab si. So many memories flooded!

When I watched Saawariya for the first time I loved the film
I have different level of obsession with Sanjay Leela Bhansali Work
When I watched the film the story connected with me
Every frame is a picture but the songs are magic
Mashallah or Jab se tere naina or Yoon Shabnami or the title track all the songs are so good and the way it was shot was magical and dreamy 🪄
    I just love the theme
One of the films that I feel a little heartbreak after watching because I am connecting with Ranbir's character so much
Still love it and miss those times 💙💙💙

It was just a brilliant film
One of the best from yrf

Vindication! I am so glad RUclips threw this up in my recommendations. Anupama has been my favorite critic since forever, but my one gripe with her always was that she LOOOOOVVEED to put down ALL of SLB's films as pretentious, shallow etc. and he happens to be my favorite director. So I'm glad she saw some positives in at least one of his films, that too the one which is maligned the most! I loved Saawariya so much when it came out and saw all these things that they are talking about and much more! The songs, Thode Badmash, Pari, Yoon Shabnami are all masterpieces - lyrically, vocally, cinematography everything! And the movie is such an intelligent adaptation of the Dostoevsky short story. Yes I agree the length could have been cut down. This was the weekend I also started detesting SRK and lost hope for Hindi film audiences, when an absolute trash cringefest like OSO was so acclaimed (I don't mind the box office success, it was designed for it). I was never a fan of SRK but he really showed his ugly side during the promotions of this OSO, absolutely bullying Saawariya with outrageous comments in press - "jo sacha Indian hai wo OSO dekhega baaki sab Saawariya dekhenge", this kind of emotional manipulation and cracking jokes etc at a director who gave him one of his most acclaimed roles was despicable.
