I purchased my Rolex Submariner (ref. 16613, new) in 1998 from a USA AD. My wife took it to a premier boutique in Switzerland (hint: the one now owned by Rolex) for servicing and she was told that my watch was a fake. The watch inspector at the counter really embarrassed my wife...made her feel like a criminal in front of a handful of other patrons. In any event, my wife stood her ground and requested that a more experienced staff member review the watch, along with the purchase papers and insurance documents. Of course, that senior expert validated the watch as authentic and had it sent to Geneva for servicing. Eight weeks later, the serviced watch was returned...along with an invoice for $1100. Seems to me that the so-called "professionals" have a hard time authenticating the real watches, too! Especially the older watches...you know...the ones bought under the assumption that Rolex quality delivered something special over one's lifetime. That treatment taught me one good lesson...never to buy another Rolex.

I lived in Beijing for 7 years and you could go into some of the pearl markets back then and there were "grades" of fakes whether you wanted LV, Rolex or something else. The high end fakes were masterful and the low end, fairly obvious if you knew the real brand. The high end Folex were almost indistinguishable as long as you werent trying to fake a Gold watch as the color of the metal was always off. The high end LV could only be shown to be fake if an LV store disassembled and looked for hidden tags and such that are secreted in the genuine product. I will never forget on my first trip to China, we were at a restaurant where the delicious dishes were USD $1.10 per plate. Yet, our waiter was wearing a Rolex? Huh? Then I jump into one of the super affordable, cheap taxi's and the driver is also wearing a Rolex? My local friend quickly gave me the lowdown that weekend when we visited some of the markets there. To me it's no different than a "homage watch". The homage watch steals the design, the replica steals the design and logo. I used to have a replica Breitling that I bought on Canal St. in NY. I loved that watch.

    • @IaMaPh1991
      @IaMaPh1991 3 месяца назад

At least an homage has plausible deniability, in that the branding, logo, and various dimensions and features are not exact to the original, which to me makes them perfectly valid because some homages punch WAY above their weight class, and even surpass some lower grade established brands, allowing you to have a champagne watch for lemonade money, whereas a fake basically stops trying to compete and merely allows you to be a dishonest poser with no honor or respect.
Sure, an homage might be "lazy", but at least it isn't outright lying about what it is; sometimes the little changes can even improve on a design.
And besides some of the best iconic models of all time have been known to conveniently crib features from each others' prior established models even to the early days of horology; the lesser brands are simply more open and honest about what they are doing.
Now... what I would LIKE to see are hybrid designs that compare the best features of two or more iconic models from iconic brands and basically posit the question of that would a collaboration model between Rolex and Omega or Patek Philippe and Jaeger-LeCoultre look like? If you've watched ID Guy's channel, he has some theoretical videos that explore these ideas, and I'll tell ya what, if an homage brand produced any of those designs, they would SELL LIKE HOTCAKES; basically printing money by beating the Titans of Horology to the punch in fusing the best of both worlds together, and while the individual components would be close copies of their inspirations, the overall sum of the parts when combined would allow for a wholly unique design that they can lay legitimate claim to.

Completely legal in most countries. If you’re selling, nope. If you're buying bulk, nope. If you’re carrying your own counterfeits, yes. If throughout the entire process there has been transparency and no scamming, it’s not illegal.
Every country dictates its own rules, but if we’re taking an average, it’s not illegal to buy and own as much as it is to sell.
People buy fake stuff either because they’re aware high quality fakes are often better made than the original luxury good (see Hermes Birkin bags and their shoddy QC compared to $1000 replicas made of the same stuff) or because they want onlookers to think they’re loaded. Sometimes, wealthy people in unsafe areas will prefer to wear high quality replica products to avoid theft and having to go through insurance.

I think the whole culture of luxury watches is BS. The actual watches aren't worth it today. Because of pop culture and media, (music especially) people of all walks of life want luxury items regardless of whether they can afford them or not. So knockoffs are a thing because of that. Even if you are that super rich celebrity that has the real thing, it would be foolish to wear it everywhere. It would be smarter to keep the real watch hidden in a safe somewhere while you wear a replica when you're out in public. Do the same thing for expensive jewelry as well. Not wearing the real thing will help it to keep its value. If you wear that type of jewelry on a regular basis, you may cause wear and tear on it. Or if you're in an accident of some kind, it may be damaged or destroyed.

Additionally, most people assume that expensive timepieces are not something that ordinary people purchase.

I totally agree with your comments about the inaccessibility of a genuine Rolex by the “common man”. I own 4 Invicta’s which are Rolex lookalikes. They keep perfect time, look good and are very affordable. Why bother with Rolex?

I bought mine from an auction, but I knew it was fake. But the price of the Rolex is close to $50k... I'm never going to be able to afford that, or wait that long even if I did. Yeah I'm good, I'll hang out with my fake one, and not cringe as I walk through the threshold of doors lol

I was surprised that many people are ok with this kind of marketing strategy (as it’s quite successful with many luxury brands). To me the effect is the opposite. They can keep it as long as they want.. I’m not in hurry 😂 I can spend money on something else too. Good video spot on! 🎉😎👍

I love my rep Rolex. I paid about $100 for it. Sure, if you're super in to Rolexes, you know. 99% of the people out there aren't.
I also have a rep AP Roal Oak (my first rep watch) a rep Patek, and I'm waiting on a rep Cartier Santos to be delivered.

I would never buy/wear a auth Rolex, but would gladely buy a fake just to clap back.
I’ll stick to my Omegas and Jaeger Lecoultre.

I don't get buying a fake when for the same money you could support another brand, instead of supporting a replica maker. Getting an homage is also a option

Never owned a Rolex, and never will. I just don't like the way they look. When I was buying high end watches regularly, it was Breitling or Omega. Great watches without most breaking the bank. Still have a few, but prefer to wear my Casio and Bulova ones most of the time now. Just me I guess, but money is better spent somewhere else for me now.

Why are people wasting their time and money on vanity? Just get a tudor. Will owning a Rolex change your life? No!

Go to the grey market... Miami, NY, LA, Chicago best places... you can get a great watch for under retail most of the time

I walked into Polacheck’s in Thousand Oaks and bought a Rolex Yacht Master for 8k in 2009. I returned it the next day for a cheaper and better looking GMT II and a few pieces by David Yurman pieces, one a dinosaur bone ring. There was no waiting list, no palms greased, no sob story about dad’s watch. I’m a blue collar guy wearing jeans and a T-shirt.
