If you ask someone who their favorite character in Steven Universe is, Peridot is a pretty popular answer and for very good reason! Her character is heavily associated with the show’s transition to a darker, serialized story, her journey of self discovery is always a fantastic watch, she has a top-tier design, with or without the limb enhancers and she eventually becomes the quintessential fandom nerd. Encapsulating the rush of having a hyperfixation, dedicating all your spare time to overanalyzing a fictional world and its characters, while staying perfectly in-character herself.
But of course there’s so much more to Peridot than just being a geek - she’s the first gem in over 5000 to rebel against the Great Diamond Authority! She’s someone who put in the time and effort to unlearn her prejudices and realize the gems of Homeworld had been collectively brainwashed through fear and propaganda. And by disavowing their harmful beliefs, she was able to uncover things about herself that she would’ve never tapped into otherwise. Get ready to unleash your inner morp, because today we’re delving into the evolution of one of Cartoon Network’s best characters. This is Peridot: Era 2’s first rebel gem.

Not much screentime? Peridot got a whole arc dedicated to her. Meanwhile, both Lapis got 3 and Bismith got 2 dedicated episodes.
@@w33dCatperidot after the cluster arc was just comedic relief and not much screen time. She was just there to end the jasper arc.
Her only good arc after the cluster was the depression/lapis leaving arc but was pretty short and rushed due to Steven universe cancellation
@@Elistic4443d sure they utilise her much after the arc dedicated to her, however that was because the her character arc had finished and thoroughly explored. Meanwhile, if Lapis and BIsmuth had much more potential for character exploration.

Peridot literally had the best character development of any character in the show. I still remember her meta line in the movie saying she would’ve gotten all of character development lost due to the Rejuvenator.

I honestly think Yellow Diamond DID remember Peridot when Blue and Yellow went on the offensive but Yellow refused to give Peridot the satisfaction of being remembered.
With their last interaction of Peri insulting Yellow, it’d be like a janitor insulting a CEO: the insult is gonna stay with them since it probably has NEVER happened before, but if they interacted again, why would the CEO acknowledge it and give the janitor the satisfaction of taking up space in their mind as a memory?
Honestly, I like to think her "Metal Bending" is a tie to her "lemon handsers" (limb enhancers) , She's basically magnetic to keep them in place as she works.

I love how her outfit changed not just with the visor, but to have the Crystal Hems' Star on her torso instead of a diamond, showing her change even more, and I think that's a great detail not many people catch
She even foreshadows it way earlier, saying something like, "Do I have to wear a star now?!" directly after insulting yellow and accepting herself as a Crystal Gem.

A lot of people miss the fact that both Peridot and Steven are the catalysts for the entire series happening! She sends the Red Eye to Earth in the second episode long before Steven sets Lapis free.
I love (as a person who spends a little too much time on their iPad) when Peridot went “I love this thing.” While hugging her IPad. She’s just a magical character.

I always wondered, if gems never rebelled until Rose Quartz came along, why would there be any trials if no one did any crimes before or after Rose?
The gems are so worried about perfection, maybe they had trials when a gem made too many mistakes to see if they'd shatter them.
For gems like the off colors, who didn't actually rebelled but still went against Homeworld's norms
She has such big energy. And I love her friendship with Steven
It’s so cool seeing Crystal Clear return. Round table and Slice of Otaku were my main plug for Steven Universe content back in the glory days. I’ve been on a comfort show binge, and I think once I finish Owl House, SU will be my next endeavor.

Peridot's interest in fusion is mostly intellectual, and Lapis' first fusion was, yeah.

Foreshadowing
Peridots arc is such a defining arc of the show. It’s one of the first things I think about when I think about the show because it was handled so well. They deep dived into her character more than any other non-main character.
Something about her slowly realizing the flaws in home world society and the harm of it was some of the best stuff in the show.

We just want to know more stories of any characters, including peridot. But apparently they said it was canceled because of the wedding scene on the old steven universe series
Something I find interesting about how Era 2 gems couldn't materialise weapons the same as Era 1 gems is, it's clear the Ruby Squad, or at least Eyeball, were Era 2, since, while OUR Ruby can form those gauntlets, Eyeball just pulled out a simple dagger.
Whereas, Amethyst, an Era 1 gem, while being viewed as defective by Homeworld standards, could form much more detailed and unique weapons in her whips.
Also, the fact Peridot's dress and shoes poofed with her implies she'd managed to alter her form in some way despite seemingly not having shape shifting abilities.
It could be Bismuth found a way to make some that worked with her form, I suppose.
Something similar clearly happened for Ruby and Sapphire for their wedding, after all

I love all the attention to detail, this show is truly amazing and I constantly introduce to friends (one is on their first rewatch). I'd watch a vid about each and every gem by you cause you don't miss a beat!!
I used to have a massive case of perfect child syndrome. Top of my (admittedly low fund) school and (mid-tier at best) class, spoiled by my grandparents who I spent a good chunk of my childhood with due to CPS and my abusive father, and overprotected by my mother. So, I know what it's like to think you're superior to others, even when realistically you are no better than the average student. My dad has major issues with projection and a 'I get what I want and if I don't I throw a fit' mentally. I used to have the same mindset, and despite his abuse, used to view him as this perfect person who was always right. As I grew up and got hit with a reality check that my dad never got, I learned that mindset wasn't good. My dad didn't take well to me growing up and he started projecting on me, so eventually I just cut him off for my own sanity.
edit: basically, my dad was yellow diamond (without the redemption) and I was peridot as a teenager-turned-young adult. Peridot was so relatable to me both on a personal and emotional level

My headcannon was always that peridot always had the intention of going in the drill with pearl. She probably would have had a similar moment she had with Garnet and amethyst. Letting a 13 year old go to the center of the earth to confront a bioweapon made of people is fucking up also
Peridot has always been my favorite character in the show and her journey of discovering the truth was amazing. Thanking for giving her time to shine, this clod appreciates it.

I always kinda wished that Peridot made her limb enhancers again. She just had such a cool design with her homeworld parts
Peridot is my favorite character in the show. Not only is she adorable, but I really relate to her, and I'm glad to have her as the very little aroace rep we get being aroace myself. I love her
PERIDOT!!! Our favorite green dorito! I'm so glad you're talking about her, because her arc in the show is wonderful, and she immediately wormed her way into our hearts. Peri being compared to a cyberbully makes SO much sense.
Man, the writing crew just...didn't care about developing Lapis, did they? Peridot had episodes with ALL the Crystal Gems, and Lapis...didn't, she just kept kinda creepily simping for Steven at times.

I like to think that Yellow Diamond did remember Peridot, she just didn't want to give Peridot the time of day so Yellow just ignored her.
A great redemption story is hard to do! We all love an angry little slice of pie.
An interesting thing to note in retrospect is that Peridot never actually has a verbal issue with two different gems fusing, hell she even remarks when pearl and Amethyst do it, that she can deal with it since they are doing it for a productive purpose.
Given both her rejection of attempting fusion (though understanding WHY they are fused) and her being Gem equivalent of an Ace individual, it's likely that this particular point of contention in her time working on the drill for once wasn't a propaganda thing, she WAS just genuinely uncomfortable with fusion, and to a degree still is (solely when directed at herself).

When u first watched SU a few years ago, the moment Steven tried to befriend her I knew she was gonna be a favorite of mine and by the time future ended she was! I love the line in the movie about she almost lost all her character development haha
