- Learn how to tumble rocks in this DIY rock tumbling video. For this video I use the Lortone 12 lbs rock tumbler. And my famous BC Ocean Picture stone, as well as agates and some other semi-precious gemstones. Polishing rocks in a rotary tumbler is easy if you follow this simple step by step procedure.

One thing I've learned vicariously- make sure all the stones you tumble together are basically the same hardness, or the soft stones will come out super small or completely gone!
Also, the soft stones will be scratched badly still during the final steps.
Was gonna mention this
My 9yr. Old loves rocks and this video sealed him on it. Really cool!!!
As an Autistic person, I love fiddling with tumbled stones when I get stressed out or get sensory overload, there´s something really calming about touching something that´s so hard, but yet so darn smooth and soft at the same time....weird, maybe, but who wants to be "normal" ;)
It was really fun to see how rock tumbling works :) so thank you for sharing 💜
Jesus loves you
Different stones have such a beautiful range if energies....l have loved rocks, and stones since l was a kid. I can relate ti how they can make you feel better.
As we were kids we thought glass marbles were cool but your rocks are cooler! Awesome video Dan!
Thanks for keeping it real. Most tubers hide their mistakes. You highlight them to point out the lesson learned. That's as it should be. Praying for your continued recovery and more lessons for us to learn with you.
Perfect timing! My niece just got the beginners rock tumbler from national geographic. We just started it.this should teach her patience. Lol she is 4
I have 1 too! Enjoy!
Dan, your heart surgery hasn’t stopped your ability to create a useful and awesome video! You’re one of life’s teachers and for that, I appreciate you!
Thanks
Not only do I admire your rocks, but the live egde counter & iron work hinge on your door.
Nice craftsmanship.
Holy shit, I've been bingeing tumbling channels lately, and I was just saying, 'I wish someone would do a video about tumbling ocean picture stone'!
BOOM! There it is!
:D
I wanted to see how the garner turned out as well. Nice video. Thanks Dan, prayers for a speedy recovery.
I have a rock tumbler in my classroom...my second graders LOVE it! Not a whole lot of selection in the state of West Virginia, so we order our rocks! 🙂👍🏻
@#1 Boris Said Fan … No, I use a LRT (Lortone Rock Tumbler), not a CRT (Cheap Rock Tumbler). 😂👍🏻
@@mr.ramjangles5165 Mr Ramjangles, I don’t know if you will get this after so long but if you do please reply. I am heavy equipment operator working in the foothills of the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, just east of Jasper National Park. Since you order rocks anyway, and if it’s possible to ship across Can./ US border perhaps I could pick some specimens for your class.
Regards
@@Oldmane-420 wow thanks, the school year is almost over, but I will keep it in mind! Thank you very much!
Can’t get over the beautiful BLUES!
💙🤍💛🧡💙🤍💛🧡💙🤍💛🧡
I just love the ocean picture stones. Absolutely amazing and beautiful.
WOW! Just what I don't need, ANOTHER HOBBY! But I'm sold! I want a rock tumbler and I have a million questions !!!
Love how those cylinders look
Wow! I'm just now seeing this video and it's a couple of years old! All the stones were beautiful, but that Dyna Blue picture stone is quite possibly the prettiest blue I've ever seen! Be well, and thanks for another great video!
This is so super nice looking! My Grandpa introduced me to agate collecting and polishing. When he passed he left me a jar of some of his best. Had a ton of fun collecting and learning from him. Glad to see the process still in action!
The results were filmed on my birthday! Amazing birthday present reveal. Even tho it’s not even my birthday when I’m watching this I still got excited lol
The grit equivalent is slightly over 20,000 grit. There are several websites that have conversion programs
Thanks
I hope you're doing well. Prays and huge amounts of positive energy sent your way to heal quickly! Hugs!
Hi love this Dan I live in Queensland and have always had trouble with polishing Boulder opal. You just open a new world to me thanx. Love all your vids the ones with you Dana and the boys are great.
I pray for your continued good health. After years of watching rock tumbling videos, I would recommend watching the tumbling videos from Rob at Michigan Rocks as well as his video on the rocks to avoid tumbling. Your ocean picture jasper(?) are gawjus btw.
My wife was watching with me and she's exclaiming, "Wait! Wait! Where is that big garnet!" lol
thats my thought too. what happened to the garnet?
Hey Dan, great, informative video as usual. Glad to see you are recovering well from your heart surgery. I know exactly how it feels after having had an Aortic valve replacement back in the early 80's and a type a-b Aortic dissection with bleed in 2015. I'm pretty much bug*ered now and can only sit on the sideline watching other guys like yourself having all the fun. I was into metal detecting here in the UK (hey we got NO GOLD, only the stuff fools dropped, or hid), but just can't walk far or swing the detector any more. Stay safe, take it easy and keep diggin' up that shiney stuff for many more exciting videos.
Glad your better dan!!! I'm new to the channel and to all those wondering how rocks were and are polished....this type of video is GOLD!!!!! Very informative to me and always great to watch another master at his own crafts!!! Love from ellwood city Pennsylvania usa
My 6 year old son asked for a tumbler for his birthday. We have been tumbling for 2 months now. Love it!!
Did I miss the garnet towards the end? I was curious to see how it turned out.
I watched the ending three times thinking I just missed it, glad to know it wasn’t just me! lol. Too bad it didn’t tumble down like the rest, but it is a really dense gem.
Yea I was curious on this as well
I wondered about this as well
The garnet polished up but did not make the final cut for the video.
ZZZ
Thanks for showing the whole process in the one video my daughter suggested I look up rock polishing and I’m really enjoying your Chanel
What happened to the Garnet
It polished up, just did not make the final show in the video.
I was wondering the same. Maybe a short about the gem. That'd be sweet
....YES ! Show the Garnet!
Show the garnet!!! ;)
Garnet ! Garnet! Garnet!
As beautiful as those Ocean Picture stones are, all polished up for jewelry, I think I prefer the rough stones for jewelry I'd make for myself. It would be fun to experiment with them. This is a wonderful video. Keep on healing, my friend. 😊
They're already so beautiful after the first week ! I'd be proud to have them in my collection .
In found the same stones on the slope of the Hope Slide (1965), easy to pick up these beauties.
So happy your healing!Thank you for teach us about these great tools! Prayers for your whole family to stay healthy!
Thanks for this! I actually have some of your ocean picture stone and serpentine together in my tumbler right now... It’s just a little baby tumbler made more for kids. I’ve never tumbled my own rocks before but I’ve always wanted to try it so I started small and inexpensive. It’s been going for 5 days on the coarse grit as of right now and I will be opening it and removing the serpentine tonight!
Dan is the Bob Ross of geology 🙏🏻😎
Honestly dan, it was a real treat to come home and you were in the recommends mid week! Pretty cool man👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I love all your content. This is the kind of stuff that makes you tube worthwhile to me.
Beautiful stones, Dan. Ironically, I started a polish operation with some ocean picture stones included and am 2.5 weeks in. So far they are looking good and I hope they look as good as yours.
Dan! Stop apologizing, it's bringing me down! You'll never meet or know me because I'm from South Alabama and it's not likely that we will ever meet up. I watch you because you take me away from my problems and i just so happen to have a gold panning dream that I may never be able to afford (school maintenance). You have taught me things that I didn't know that I loved! (Ocean Stone) " I'm a beach boy" ....
Dan! Watching you and your Dad melt fragments was awesome! Trust me I can go on...... Stop apologising! DAN NATION HAS YOUR BACK!!! KEEP HEALING AND WE'LL KEEP WATCHING!!!
I was told to match the Mohr (hardness) of the rocks when tumbling and to stay within a hardness of 1 with each tumbling.
I saw a pendant of ocean picture earlier today. I never heard of it. It's gorgeous. Then I saw your video. Love your work. ☺️
This may have been asked all ready or i missed it in the video but i was most curious about how the "Garnet" turned out. I have a bunch of the same kind trapped in a approx. 12" x 5" stone. If you have pics of any you have polished, I'd love to view them. Thank you and awesome work!
This was filmed the day before my birthday. No wonder they came out so nice!
It's always it's nice to see you're still out and about keep it up and always like your videos stay well I can't wait to see the next one
I appreciate that
Beautiful.💪🏾🙏🏾. I really wanna buy my older sis that tumbler ..she used to love stones.. Now i'm motivated ..Thank you
You're the best Dan! Thanks for the amazingly quality content and for just being you!! 😊
My pleasure!
When I was young a rock tumbler was one of my most favorite possessions. 45 years later I think I need to go back to those things that made me happy as a kid ❤️🤘 rock on!
For Serpentine: you may be able to succeed with the extreme high grit silicon carbide sandpaper on eBay from China. I fixed a scratch out of a computer monitor with it and it restored the surface to clarity although it isn't as perfect as glass. The repair worked.
agreed i feel like you are the funny uncle that everyone needs and loves
In my best Jerry Maquire:
"SHOW ME THE GARNET!" 😁
happy to see you ok and healing❤️❤️❤️
Where is that little red or burgundy gem stone...
Dan... where is the stooo-ooone lol
Good Job Kind Sir...
It polished up, but did not make the final cut for the video sake
Just forgotten or disappeared ???
@@Danhurd show a picture of it please
I’m glad you are healthy now. I just started following you. Thank you
Really cool to watch. Thanks for taking the time and effort to put this together!
I love this guy! So happy living his dream life
I like that core sample that would be pretty neat to have a couple of those 👍
They take a long time to cut
The longer they take to cut the more they're worth I would say lol✌️✌️
I follow your channel frim Spain because at late night when I wake up I need some relaxing-boreing thing to get back to sleep again but…instead of that you make me more awake. I love your english accent and your stone quest to dream off my own little hobby: minerals. Thanks. Hope you get well soon.
What an absolute treat of a video!! Thank you so much Dan for all your content. Hope you're doing well and staying healthy!
I am, and thanks
This is the first video of yours that I have watched, very considerate of you to welcome new viewers. I'm very sorry to hear that you needed to have heart surgery and I hope you have been feeling better since this video was recorded.
I remember the rock tumbler I got for Christmas when I was my eldest nephews age around 5, 6 it was loud lol
I had the same problem with my first tumbler as a wee rockhounder. Plastic barrels are the devil. 😉 Rubber barrels are much quieter.
Happy healing as always Dan
Actually, I wanted to see how the Garnet turned out?
The garnet polished up but did not make the final cut for the video.
@@Danhurd you can't let quality content like that garnet just tumble away mate... You really cut me deep with this one 🤧😜
Thank you for such enjoyable, entertaining podcasts, about finding and removing rocks and rock sections. Really appreciate your way of showing and explaining all that your doing, and you and your team's happiness make me happy just watching and learning from your videos. Wishing you, and all your loved ones joy, good health, and peace aways
Given how much of the stones was lost as an experiment I'd cut the tumble time in half for the first 2 stages and see what the outcome is.
As an amateur from the UK who tumbles rocks from around the environment - I live inside a nature reserve, which is nice - I can absolutely confirm: they don’t put switches on these things and nobody I know knows why. It’s just part of the magic, maybe!
A superb video with great advice - thank you, sir!
Thank you for this dan! Question. Can you reuse the sludge in your next rock tumble with the different grits or is it recommended to just use new grit?
Hello, I watch your videos from Turkey with interest and love.
Never ever wash off your rocks or equipment in the sink. The slurry sets up like, well like a rock and is the last thing you want in your pipes.
Good to know!
Thanks Dan....your a good oldish teacher
You've mentioned a trace of gold in your OPS claim, did you pan out all of your grit at the end?
And by the way your spunk and energy reminds me of my geology teacher in college. He was awesome 😎
Thought the same as I watched the reveal, the garnet gets no love :(
The garnet polished up but did not make the final cut for the video.
@@Danhurd too bad, was curious, my daughter found one at a family gem mining place in NC and I wanted to see how it would look after shrinking down
Your videos are some of the best on RUclips. You have an awesome energy.
My aunt taught me all this before, hit it right on the nail! Good job explaining this!
as a professional dice goblin, this video is very satisfying
I love ❤️ your hat, I love this ocean Picture stone, it’s so beautiful. Wonderful find. 🙏🏽
I still can't get over how beautiful that stone is!
Really enjoy these polishing/tumbling videos you put out. I know they take some time, so Im grateful for the time you put in and sharing your wisdom with us.
Amazing beauty could only come from mother earth thank you for sharing your knowledge
My honey really enjoyed the gift of ocean stone I gave him. We haven't done anything with it yet. Great to see you looking so healthy! The Ocean stone really lends itself to tumbling, doesn't it?? Beautiful!!
Dan"love ur nature stones of all places"ur fun to watch"lm travellin with u"n wife n friends"l cant wait for u open tumbler" beautifull stones of all shapes n colors"Takcare n God keep u all safe"love ur veds🙏
My grandpa rock-tumbled, still miss him.
Thank you for this video! My son and I did a bit of rock hunting and now tumbling in the garage. Not much for gold in the Eastern panhandle, but it's always fun to do some fun stuff in nature with the family
I live in canada and always go fly fishing and always find myself picking up rocks and bringing em home still using my tumbler from when I was 15 it's time for a upgrade
I think my 5 year old is your new biggest fan! She has a rock collection & a tumbler. Now she wants me to order her a bag of the ocean picture stone & some other stones from you! 💜
Thanks, Dan! Guess i wasn't the only one who asked! Hubby has done three stages- waiting for more compound. A couple of them lost their substrate. I took a photo before, so I'll be sure to send you a picture when they're done.
You've earned my subscription.
This stuff "rocks" my world😉✌️.
There's no 2 ways about it Dan. When Dana gets the blues, she does it with style.
yep!
I like watching this video just so I can envy the OPS on the shelves behind you!
So glad you are recovering well and thank you for sharing your great experiences and knowledge. I have been a rock hound since I was a kid and wish I had meet someone like you so I could have explored some places you are share with us, be well and stay strong. TY 🕊
New to your channel found during my recent hobby of tumbling and have really enjoyed you and the channel. Always a good time. Thanks for the enjoyment.
Dan thanks so much for making this video. I've been apprehensive to tumble the OPS I bought from you, but am confident now seeing how great yours came out! Well done!
You’re my new favorite youtuber now
What a great video! I think yours may have turned out better than mine, but thanks for including them at the end! Cameras in general just don't do them justice.
I love the sound of the stones clatter. it’s an oddly satisfying sound
Dan that paper washer does a lot actually and thanks for your videos…. I learned a lot!!! By the way I wish you the best wishes to recover well.
I am so happy I found your channel!
Ocean picture stone is beautiful .
Prayers for a speedy recovery! I thoroughly enjoy your content! Your reviews on ALL the gold pans were INCREDIBLE! I was actually getting ready to buy a pan, but waited to watch ALL your reviews before I bought one!
Awesome job I enjoy your Chanel I’m a rock hound and prospector from Wyoming we have Sweet water agate I tumble them they are moose agates and turn out awesome
Those are rock art:)! Thanks for pointing out the shore, ocean, breakers and sky. They look like painted beach scenes! Each one another little beach! I really enjoyed the tumbling lesson, too. Thank you for sharing your knowledge:).
