A few people have asked why Claire was so quiet in the first hour, and what happened is that she was nervous and not sure how much to talk because I had asked her to stand in for someone else that day, in order to help me discuss an outline I had prepared. About 50 minutes in we took a break and I encouraged her to speak up more, and then the rest of the episode flowed much better.
Yes! All of this! If anyone cared about me exercising my voice: thank you! Just being on the podcast helps with that tremendously, so thanks again to Chris for trusting me to fill a spot! Two things were going on: Me, a 12th house Capricorn Sun Mercury situation only having a few hours to mentally prepare and then not implode from stage fright on the astrology podcast. I was totally nervous! I was barely able to paint my eyebrows onto my face! Some folks know I'm a dancer - sharing my dance is not at all the same as sharing my face and words. Eek! The other thing is that I'm also very concise in general, and a lot of the definitions that make up the conceptual framework of aspects don't require a lot of addition conjecture from me. Of course I could have added in some meaningless words for entertainment value, but I was nervous! I love you all

This really took my understanding of aspects to another level. This video is so hopeful, thank you so much for making it! I have an out of sign square in my chart (89 degrees) and the discussion around sign-based aspects has prompted be to reconsider my perspective on it and how the sympathy between the signs may interact with the tension voiced by the square!
Thank you so much Chris. This episode has helped me finally understand aspects. This was so thorough. I went back and forth several times, took notes, Drew my own diagrams. Love your channel!!
Thank you so much for this well-explained episode on aspects, as well as the other videos. As a beginner, I sometimes get a bit lost in the books and these really help understand it so much better! 🥰
I've just started listening, so maybe you will talk about it later in this episode. I'm very curious about how to interpret aspects that are by degree, but out of sign. Example planets at 0 Libra and 29 Pisces.
Especially if it is within three degrees and applying then I would still consider it to be in a normal degree-based aspect, although the quality of the aspect may be modified and become harder or softer depending on what signs are involved. Like if two planets are in a square by degree across signs then it is still fundamentally a square, although it may be softened a little bit if the planets are in signs that trine each other.
Thank you so much for going over these major aspects in detail! Thanks especially for covering more on sign based aspects, it had made sense to us but hadnt heard much about aspects not related to degree.

At 50:50 when you talk about degree-based aspects that cross sign boundaries, I wish you had elaborated more on how that can affect an aspect and would love to hear about that in a future video. For example I have a grand trine featuring Lilith in 29 degree Cancer, Juno in 3 degree Aries, and Pluto in 1 degree Sagittarius. This grand trine forms a Star of David with an air grand trine featuring Mercury/Mars in 2 degree Gemini, Chiron in 8 degree Libra, and Uranus in 4 degree Aquarius. The Lilith sticks out here.
Sign based aspects is easy if you look at the sign and it's element. For example in you graph @ 17:02 Cancer will always oppose Capricorn, just as Arius will oppose Libra, in this case Air can build up the fire but it can also blow it out, the same with water Cancer can nurish Capricorn Earth but at the same time flood it. where as the Sextile Virgo and Tarus get nurished and is balanced....think of a lake or a large pond. The trine is the Same element fire water, earth or air. The square the most difficult because in this example Water Cancer can put out the fire, Aris, and Air Libra can evaporate the Water Cancer, obsorbing it Drought and dispersing it to the winds....Think of dark clouds that produce no rain, just wind.
Thank you so much for your discussion about squares and left/right side aspects. I have roughly 15 squares in my natal chart. Most of my planets, and points, are located on the upper left side of my chart in my day chart. My squares do come from my 10th house Leo (Sun and Mercury) to square my 1st house Scorpio (Uranus) + 11th house Virgo (Venus) to square my 2nd house Sagittarius (Neptune).
@@IAmAPassnger Very interesting! Aside from my Sun, I have two planets (Uranus and Saturn) in exhaultation. Everything else is neutral, detriment or fall. I also have Mars in Cancer in my 9th in square to my Pluto. Which has been one of my hardest placements.

Chris, Thank you for this detailed information of the basic aspects. It is nice to refresh on these but with your charts and the extra details it far surpasses anything else on the internet. I would really be interested in the harmonic age aspects with the natal and the transits. I have been looking into this with the astro gold. Your time and generosity is much appreciated.

That 3rd hit of Uranus Square Saturn is also my 3rd hit of Uranus and Saturn opposition (natal square Uranus and Saturn 47 minutes in Leo and Scorpio). I’m ready for that to be done. Oh and Pluto is making an T-Square with my natal north and south nodes right now and obviously has been and will be for a while.
That T square bit was an interesting point about the middle planet being the release point that has to do something to resolve the tension between the planets that it squares and the opposing planets that it sits in between. I have Leo Mercury square Scorpio Chiron square Aquarius Uranus and it's one of the most interesting and dynamic configurations in my chart. Claire's point made me think about it a bit differently, with Chiron being that mid point mitigator in the T square.
i really like your podcast! I am always learning something new. I look forward to your podcast about transits! Thank. you for all the hard work you do.
Thank you so much Chris for your podcast and your shows and guest astrologers have been a Godsend for me as far as learning astrology in a meaningful way beyond just collecting information. I have a feeling that interest in astrology has been skyrocketing and it underscores the fact that we live in a somewhat volatile, transformative, challenging times- and there is something actually very empowering about astrology and learning to "read the symbols" from the universe that can shed light on collective as well as personal, intimate side of life. I would LOVE an episode Chris maybe like symposium style- with several contributing astrologers talking about what they feel is coming really coming strong in these days in their astrologer experience and what they themselves are learning from new students coming in- their reasons can be shifting these days?_ or what they reflect on the collective consciousness (even though you are not New Age, but this is bigger than New Age)- why with youtube and podcasts, astrology is really being disseminated on a mass scale and what they see that can do, or the dangers possibly, of that, if any. Symposium sounds right... and go scorpios!! We need you.
I liked that Claire remembered to clarify - by saying "quote, unquote" - that the terms 'benefic' and 'malefic' are relative and even symbolic rather than absolute in meaning, therefore they shouldn't go unqualified.
This was so helpful and very funny at minute 140 where Chris goes into the person with anger issues may be becoming a stand-up comedian in roast battles😂😂😂
Question about sign-based aspects. If one planet is at 29.59' of Cancer, and another is at 0.0' of Leo, it's pretty much an exact conjunction by degree. But it's not a conjunction based on sign. So would you just interpret that as basically an conjunction in Leo? And what about 0.0' Cancer and 29.59' of Cancer. Technically a sign-based conjunction, but for all intents and purposes, not really. I'm guessing nobody is suggesting that planets somehow know which sign they're in and act accordingly, then flip a switch once they cross that arbitrary line. It's all about energies. They're nebulous, like tides moving in and out, or two different songs cross-fading on a radio station. Do signs and houses also have orbs, where you're in Cancer, but you can start to feel the Leo energy fading in? Isn't that what cusps are? Sign-based aspects make sense if both planets are solidly in the center, but what happens with these edge cases?
I have Saturn within three degrees of my ascendant and opposing my sun and mercury in the 7th within a few degrees this helped me look at that in a whole different light and figure out why some things are the way they are for me
Wasn’t an episode I expected to like that much but was one I wished was longer. My more uneducated view is.. I have sun opposite moon but not aspected while I can relate to how sun opposite moon is described while knowing it’s not at all intense or a life theme. Orbs and so on, to me, only relate to intensity. You had a show on an app I figured I’d test out before listening to/watching that episode and I’ll read transit reads, simplified, after the fact to see how accurate they are which is actually impressive. Related to this, it actually had an ice breaker I laughed at because it said: “your personal philosophy is even if they’re hating, at least least they’re taking” which is part of why I don’t have a podcast and limit social media. (lol) The bad part is I’m not sure which placement and aspect is honed in on. I’d have to have a co or main host if I did some type of cast because I’ve noticed guests frequently take time to warm up and I’m Claire shouldn’t feel bad at all; if it was me I could be that way the entire time. My Mercury is erratic. It’s either quiet/soft spoken, very charming and funny, or that placement described in that icebreaker. Recently I said there wasn’t much of a difference between Greta Thunberg and Donald Trump and it’s amazing how no one notices it just depends on who’s side they think they’re on. Technically, I said too, if I was living on a boat and only came to shore angry, yelling, and spitting on people I’d be arrested and out in an institution; it’s awful. The intent is just saying how it’s easy to rally behind a person who’s over the top angry and rationality goes out of the window. My assumption is it’s the libra conjunctions with Venus, mars, and Pluto which may have uranus in scorpio influence… Yet, north node plus where Mercury is with Saturn could do that also. I’d need a cohost or main host to either keep things alive or punch me in face when I go into that mode. When Snowden said he didn’t leak anything anyone didn’t already know but figured people would care if he was attached to it I pulled a “he’s not my lord and savior” shtick which made a lot of people mad. I’m split on changing the names of masculine and feminine because I feel astrology can explain this better than any modern philosophy while also accepting this as a metaphor taken literally has caused centuries on centuries of problems. I usually get raised eyebrows when I say my view on Pluto is sort of how it’s the higher vibration mars that’s feminine which is much more powerful because.. mars can be forcefully making others do what they want while Pluto can make others act thinking they’re the ones actually making the decision which is part of why I’m interested in Jung while also studying into Edward Bernays.. not because I WANT TO use it, but because it’s helpful to show how it can be used on others including themselves. That came to mind looking at how uranus aspects my libra placements. It’s like Jung, the part of his life that I find most fascinating is what it was probably like to work in his field studying archetypes then seeing how horrific archetypal manipulation can be when weaponized as propaganda. I’ve read he actually worked with what is now the CIA to profile generals to overthrow Germany and was pivotal in winning the war. I do somewhat feel the more on the side of altering masculine/feminine because the words are more flexible and stretched too far where it can be confusing. I once stated feminism is actually masculinism since it’s about equality of masculine energy by sexes where there isn’t a more modern actual feminine ideology for a more understandable explanation of feminism. Feminine power in old philosophy was actually more powerful than masculine, yet, it being taken as literal made a big mess of the whole thing. Fantastic, Claire was a great guest and I didn’t notice she was any more quiet than usual guests that take a few minutes to get comfortable.
5th Versus 11th oppositions could be shown with how sometimes bringing in your own luck and good fortune, especially creatively can cause your friends/colleagues to start to hate on you!! It creates distance between you and people that once thought they were on the same level as you.
What about a conjunction between two planets in different signs and houses. I have Jupiter in gemini 11th conjunct Saturn in Taurus 10th, I never find anything informative about this placement so I don't get it.
Hi, yes such a good question. I have one of these in my own chart, and it's weird to wrap my head around. I treat them like they are unaspected. So for instance, I have Sun and Saturn (loosely but lets go with it) conjunct but in different houses/signs. I treat them each like they are doing their own thing in their own way, *not* communicating with each other. Not jiving. Sun/The Will/Autonomy is very structure oriented, practical, and realistic; Saturn/Structure/Boundary is based on aspiration, seeking knowledge, and is (allegedly) idealistic. Those are two very different vibes. It's been working out about as well as you think it would: clumsily. Being I can't see your chart I can't comment, but focus on Jupiter in Gemini, then Saturn in Taurus, and then imagine what would happen if two people working on the same project (you. you are the project) were doing it in different ways and not communicating - what might be the outcome then?
In opposition, I heard you mention that unlike square, the planets are in equal footing, so the pull is equal. Does the dignity of each planet in opposition come into play in opposition? Or any other conditions (like combust planets opposing something)? Thank you for your work. I'm inspired to study harder each time.
During a conjunction is the planet or star that is physically further away (in a shadow) or under the beam of the nearer planet, is it powerless for that moment or for 15 degrees? Or is this " under the beam effect" only for natal aspects for planets close to the sun at birth? I am also wondering if a conjunction of two planets would have a different good or bad aspect than a planet and a luminary conjunction. When an eclipse of the sun from the moon in front of it, the darkness can cause flowers to close up because of the effect. Does the exact conjunction of planets or of a planet and a luminary have this same kind of effect?
Great video as always! I have a question: is there any possibility of you doing an in-depth video regarding the lunar nodes? I need help in deciphering what they mean for me as far as karma and the such.
Thank you for this very helpful discussion on aspects, a bit random but I was also wondering where Claire got the artwork from in the background? I love it 🥰 🌈
I've just realised I have the 2 malefics in opposition to each other in my natal chart!... Mars (retrograde) at 16:22 Cancer (in exile) opp Saturn at 16:56 Cap (very much at home there!).
Love this!! Also fascinating about the superior planets in aspects! Was looking at John Wayne Gacy's chart earlier and he has an angular Mars in Gemini square his Mercury in Pisces, which is already in its detriment but that Mars certainly has the upper hand :-(.
My experience and observation with synastry and other chart types is that sign based aspects understand each other, but they don't activate each other the way degree based aspects (even when they're out of sign!) do 39:28
Help! I was taking a different Hellenistic astrology class on aspects and was taught that when 2 planets come into aspect with each other it is always the most outer or slower moving planet that will have the most influence over the planet it is aspecting. But here when speaking about left and right sides of a planet you seem to say something different. Am I understanding correctly that any planet having the "upper hand" will be able to exert dominance even if it is say, Mercury showing down against Saturn? Or Pluto? I seem to be getting contradictory information and I really want to understand better. Thank you so much for all the info you share!! I am reading your book right now in a park and just got to this part, wanted to hop online to try and further clarify
So if a sextile is associated with venus, mars with a square, jupiter with trine and saturn with opposition. Who is associated the conjunction, sun moon or mercury?

Thank you so much! Great content and delivery as usual! 💚 to you both!
This is a great mini class from 2 yrs ago.
Thank you, thank you! Your podcasts are wonderful! I enjoy them tremendously and learn so much, so thanks again!
Thank you so much for posting this
Chris did you write a into to astrology book ? If so what is the name ?
The diagram you to show the elements 32:08 is my personal wheel ~ wow!
Thank you. This was amazingly helpful ❤
Hey! Could you reccomend books/articles/authors on astrology aspects and music? Thank you!
(An episode about this would be amazing to listen to, btw)
This was very helpful. Thank you.
5th Versus 11th oppositions could be shown with how sometimes bringing in your own luck and good fortune, especially creatively can cause your friends/colleagues to start to hate on you!! It creates distance between you and people that once thought they were on the same level as you.
Homework and podcast time
Fabulously clear. Thank you. X
so wonderfully thorough!
Great work as always!🙏🔥💚
THANK YOU!!! I really appreciate your content 😊
Please clarify best software which are you using including for Secondary Progressions, Solar returns etc.?

Yeah, a lot of missing info to really help but.. the Jupiter/Gemini should be supportive of the Saturn but it could also irritate. Need more info
Thank you so much Chris!
In opposition, I heard you mention that unlike square, the planets are in equal footing, so the pull is equal. Does the dignity of each planet in opposition come into play in opposition? Or any other conditions (like combust planets opposing something)? Thank you for your work. I'm inspired to study harder each time.
Sending gratitude from Parker Colorado
Cool, videos on the daimōn, retrogrades the terms and the decans, the four Liliths and the White Moon Selēnē would also be great!
This was a great podcast. I'm still learning after 60 years or so. I don't think I heard anything about conjunctions. Did I miss it?
When speaking of sign based conjunction dhould 1 think within 30 degrees considering each sign is xupposed to contain 30 degrees?
Thank you for this video content. I often had to look up aspects because I’m self taught.
Have you seen the episode that’s titled something like “The Early History and the Meaning of the Nodes”?
Thank you for this very helpful discussion on aspects, a bit random but I was also wondering where Claire got the artwork from in the background? I love it 🥰 🌈
I wonder what's the difference between Aversions and the Semi Sextile (30) and Quincunx (150) aspects.. Could you please explain?
what software do you use to cast charts?
I've just realised I have the 2 malefics in opposition to each other in my natal chart!... Mars (retrograde) at 16:22 Cancer (in exile) opp Saturn at 16:56 Cap (very much at home there!).
I have a question. I'm borderline cancer and Leo. What is my configuration?
Love this!! Also fascinating about the superior planets in aspects! Was looking at John Wayne Gacy's chart earlier and he has an angular Mars in Gemini square his Mercury in Pisces, which is already in its detriment but that Mars certainly has the upper hand :-(.
My experience and observation with synastry and other chart types is that sign based aspects understand each other, but they don't activate each other the way degree based aspects (even when they're out of sign!) do 39:28
Whats the difference between sign & degree based conjunctions? 5 major aspects
I guess another question is if the planet on the right is retrograde does it still have that upper hand dominance?
What class are you taking?
So if a sextile is associated with venus, mars with a square, jupiter with trine and saturn with opposition. Who is associated the conjunction, sun moon or mercury?
what about the northnode on george lucas chart on the day of the accident; thankyou?
I always refer to the “double whammy” as reciprocity or reciprocal aspects.
Hi Chris, do you have the diagrams on this episode available to print on your member Patreon page? Thanks.
Hi guys!
Also! Venus en Cancer on his 3rd was doing a sexitle to his sun in Taurus ☺️🙌🏽🔥
Thank you for making this video. 😀
