I was at this show. We went to every Zappa Halloween show at the Palladium on 14th Street in the late 70's, it was an annual event. All my friends were big Zappa fans and the shows were incredible, especially this lineup. For as much as I loved it then, seeing it now it seems even more spectacular. Been too long without Frank. It's true, you don't know what you got till its gone.
Adrian Belew is a really unique guitar player, and WAY underrated singer. Love his work with Zappa and other major artists, and his solo albums have their fanbase, but are sadly unknown by many who would appreciate them.
since i discovered reaction videos, i think i listen to more Zappa then ever, i don't care if it is the same song, so long is Zappa is good to go🎸🎸🎸 thank you
Adrian Belew, Steve Via, Tony Levin & Danny Carey are to start touring as BEAT (King Crimson) and doing the 3 albums from the 80ies... The shows are almost sold out and new ones are being added.... Enjoy Adrian and Steve played for Zappa just so you know...
So rumor has it that Frank saw Adrian in a lounge at a hotel while in Kentucky on a tip from his driver. Frank told Adrian that if he ever made it out to LA to give him a call and come over for an audition, a while later Adrian did, Frank hired him for a year contract on a handshake deal and Adrian didn't read music.
It was in Nashville after Frank had played at Vanderbuilt University. I was at the show it was killer! I had also seen Adrian with his band Sweetheart at Cantrells the club where Frank discovered him. Adrians band all had Zoot Suites
Lee...I am new to commenting but feel compelled to communicate with you. I have been a "ZappaFreak" since 1966 when he came to our record store outside of Pittsburgh and he insulted all of us...wonderfully! I know ALOT about FZ and would love to chat or speak if possible sometime. Music is the Best! Dave
Adrian and Frank(!), but they are all so amazing! Does Terry Bozio run on plutonium?! You will be happy to know that the newest, youngest (26) member of Dweezil's band revived Punky's Whips amazingly!
Awesome was the entire Bozzio era leading up to Hammersmith Feb 78 Bozzio farewell. After Colaiuta took over on drums, Frank's popularity dipped a bit. 76 live in NY and live on SNL show playing "I'm the slime" live on NBC live, were also mesmerizing performances.
From the Zoot Allures Album... Zoot Allures is also a very awesome instrumental tune, worthy of checking out. PS: That Sex Doll at the end is for the song "PINKY" which is also on Zoot Allures. PINKY is raw, loud, and fun...! Recommend a play of that one too.
@@fords_nothere_100 Actually it's a different doll - Ms Pinky, to refresh your memory, was "shorter than your average girl because she doesn't have a body, all she's got is a head"
I'd like to share my favorite Zappa piece. It's Sharleena from a 1984 concert at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. I think it's one his best solos. Originally on Chungas Revenge album it has had many incarnations. A little slow in beginning but it goes places. I was lucky enough to be at this concert live. I later acquired a bootleg analog cassette of the show from my dope dealer at the time (long story). Now we can just find it on-line. That was about the 10th and last Zappa concert I attended through the 70's and 80's. Seeing him made me proud to be a member of the human race. Glad younger people have discovered him. ruclips.net/video/SIL4BAmoGxo/видео.htmlsi=navKKdXzKebqdfX_
Frank Friday is Frankly awesome Lee. More Zappa we will all enjoy. I need a list of tracks visited already to suggest new ones. Maybe "Sexual Harassment in the Workplace" ? an instrumental.
The music was Frank's party. The composition, and the playing of his compositions at his gigs! He had so many elements involved that it's really difficult to comprehend the whole! He was just so amazing! And he wasn't anyone's fool! He was highly intelligent! Just look at his appearances before congress! I think the word to use is the word awesome, he was an individual who was into the aspect of doing, and more doing! He was doing his thinking and it was all out in the open! RIP FRANK!
Sorry, smoothies!? You've got to eat solid foods you chew with your teeth to produce the correct digestive fluids for full digestion, don't let a machine rob you of essential nutrients. Yesterday I had a homemade pizza with bacon, olives, anchovies and thinly sliced brussels sprouts on a base I made myself, I had bananas, strawberries and raspberries with plain yoghurt for dessert and a couple of Weetabix with low-fat milk for breakfast, two meals of unprocessed or low-processed food which contain fiber is far better than a machine-made slurry. I'm 65 and have been through time when I was eating too much processed crap and you just feel bad and put on weight. Fresh produce, a bit of meat (if you eat meat) and some good high fiber bread or low sugar breakfast cereal. If Frank had eaten decently instead of those burnt weenie sandwiches he may have lived longer. Imagine a different world where one could tune into one of the late shows and see an 83-year-old Frank go head-to-head with an 84-year-old John Lennon on the topic of the day.
Frank DID have a vice. Sex And yes. Word around the campfire always says he was a prick to his touring bands. That's why his members swapped almost every tour. He knew exactly what he wanted to hear and if you couldn't execute it pretty quick and with perfection you would be gone. Yep. He made his band book cheaper hotels as well as moved a goupie into his basement and told his wife to just deal with it. His father was taught chemistry and metallurgy post grad level to the defense dept. He often violated his father's security clearance as a kid. He said he used to take pools of mercury in the bathroom as a kid and smack it with a hammer. His father was a genius. Frank got it as well, just in a very different form. Some interesting stuff to be sure. We need him in the White House. Then some f&%$ing problems would get solved. Garcia for vice president. Think that could get the country in shape ? I do.
Preemptive correction to those who will point out that the keyboard player in the red shirt early in the video is Peter Wolf. Yes, indeed. His name is Peter Wolf. He's not THAT Peter Wolf though. While this concert was happening during Halloween 1977, THE Peter Wolf was playing with J. Geils Band in Washington state, clear across the country.
@@L33ReactsPeter Wolf was a very well-known keyboard player for the Jay geils band, when Frank hired a guy named Peter Wolf to play keyboard for him everybody thought the Peter Wolf had quit Jay geils and went to work for Frank.

The audition process for Zappa was brutal but the results were awesome. He did keep a distance from the band. Sex and booze were fine but drugs were instant dismissal, no arguments. If you can find Steve Vai's interview about his audition, check it out. Zappa wrote The Black Page for Bozzio and for years no one else could play it..
i heard about the black page story. thats wild. i bet it was worth it in the end though. even though it was brutal. imagine playing with frank? it would be a dream come true lol
Vinnie Colaiuto did learn The Black Page for his audition so Zappa gave him an even harder piece to sight read. If you managed more than a minute on the band stand you were probably going to get the gig!
I thought the claymation stuff was great! Maybe not so much in the middle of live footage, admittedly, but the amount of work that must have gone into every second of that animation work. There's an interview with the maker on a Zappa video somewhere and he seems to be a real eccentric (no surprise), one of the interesting "fringe" people Frank liked to encourage and promote. What can I say, I even like Wild Man Fischer!
Ok, I usually get notifications when you do. I missed that one. I'll go looking for it!! Thanks Lee for all you do. Zappa and Tull are part of my holy trilogy in music. Only missing Magma to hit my music Trifecta!!
However good a bass player Roy Estrada may have been, I suggest you look up where he is now, and the reason why. And then no more laughter at his innuendo jokes, perhaps? And read your comments from the recent Richard Thompson reaction!!!! Otherwise, a fine job as usual!!
Haha wow!! Lee, youve been schooled on laughing at innuendo jokes about a sex doll in a Frank Zappa movie. So watch it, but dont react… perhaps. Ridiculous!

What a talent Adrian Belew is! To be that awesome at both vocals and guitar. If you can play with Frank and Fripp both? You're good.

I've always liked Bozzio's drum part for this and have had a lot of fun trying to get it right during practice.
A truly epic concert. I tell you first-hand.
Keep up the good work, Frank has been a blessing to those of us who actually know music rather than being its acquaintance.
Another Zappa song of this kind is "Wind up working in a gas station" totally love it (the whole Zoot Allures album actually)
