Funny story. On the disc You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore Vol. 2 at the beginning of the song Montana, a guy at the beginning of the song yelled out "Whipping Post!" which was an Allman Brothers song, not a Zappa song. Frank messes with the guy in the audience, the band proceeds to screw up the beginning of the song, which makes Frank scold them. They start again. The same guy yells out that it's too fast for him which makes Frank have the band play Montana at a slower pace. Then Frank changes the lyrics to Montana to incorporate lyrics that are sort of like these. It is Hilarious. You should really check it out.

Zappa didn't know the Allman Brothers Band.
They may have done fhe same festivals in '70/'71 but that's all.
FZ did some shows in Helsinki (the You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore vol 2 2cd) and right before they were gonna do Montana a guy in the audience yelled out Whipping Post.
Zappa felt bad about not being able to play right there so when Bobby Martin joined Zappa had the song on setlist because Bobby knew the song.

If I may be so bold, as I’m not set up for buying you a coffee from where I am yet- for the last Zappa Saturday before the holidays, how about reacting to Franks son and his band, Zappa Plays Zappa? Frank asked Steve available to teach his son to play guitar, and he did one hell of a job!
Son of Orange county/ Trouble every Day is just mind blowing for so many reasons, not least the ‘guitar duel’ between Steve and Dweezil, and some incredible drumming. It’s been reacted to on here before so you shouldn’t have any issues ( I hope)

As others have commented, this started in 1974 when an audience member hollered out the title as a request. Frank didn't listen to pop music and so truly didn't know the song.
He said later that he wished he did so he could whip it on him and blow that guy's mind.
Fast-forward 7 years later when Bobby Martin joined the band. He told Frank that he (and everyone else on the planet) knew the song and could teach it to the band if Frank wanted to play it. So beginning in 1981 the song was played by Frank and his Rocking Teenage Combos. As in this performance, from 1984, Whipping Post was very often the encore.
It happened to be the last song played on the 1984 tour, and that tour was almost his final tour, having hanged up the guitar and not touring again until 1988.
I find it odd that with as many great signature songs that Frank has of his own that he would end any given concert and tour with someone else's song, even though it was played great.

I first listened to Zappa, in earnest, in 1970, at age 17. He's the reason I started listening to jazz and modern orchestral music. My first impressions of him, earlier. were based on hearing a little bit of "Suzy Creamcheese" or "Mud Shark" and quickly dismissing him as "weird" and unlistenable. Then in '70 my friend's brother-in-law, who was a music professor at U. of Arkansas, put on the Hot Rats album. I don't think I ever listened to music the same after that. Like so many of the really inspirational artists, he left this Earth far too soon.

The song that started it off was the Allman Brothers at Fillmore East (there was a studio version on their first album, but it evolved into this live version). Berry Oakely (the bass player) came up with the 3 and 2 time (some call it 5) at the first.
    ruclips.net/video/YSuoW8MTbZY/видео.html
At the start of the live version, someone yells out "Whippin' Post! It became a fad after that when ever some one would take too long between songs, or there was an encore, no matter who the band, they'd yell "Whippin; Post!" The modern day is when people yell "Freebird! no matter who's playing.
Frank was playing in Europe and someone yelled "Whipping Post!" and he said they didn't know it.
    ruclips.net/video/SnEiZ2ESOOY/видео.html
But that was why they learned it. Frank admired Duane Allman's guitar ability, which I'm sure also contributed to Frank's learning the song.
Someone in the 135 comments I didn't read probably listed those above links. But in case they didn't, here they are. You really need to listen to the Fillmore East version to get the full effect of the song.
I enjoy your reactions. I'll check out more of them. Greg in TN

At Zappa concerts, back in the 70s, fans would yell out Whipping Post, not because they expected Frank to play it. It was more an inside joke. On the Allman Brother's Live At the Fillmore, you can here fans yelling for Whipping Post and the Allmans launch into the song. Zappa fans picked up on this and a call for Whipping Post by fans became part of a Zappa show. I guess Frank, never to miss a good laugh, decided to do the song. Both versions a great.

I do love Bobby's vocals, but this period of Zappa's live sound feels somewhat synthetic to me. Chad and Scott are a great rhythm section, but something about the "sound" feels soul-less when compared to Bozzio, Colaiuta, O'Hearn, Barrow who had been the previous couple of bass/drums. Plus the 80s fashion really was horrific. I was there. I remember it with shame.

You know this synthetic drums were only here for a short time and Chad Wackerman is the BEST drummer Zappa ever had. Just listen to any song studio or live with him playing...

The 80s fashion ranged from hideous to passable. But I'm from the era where dudes would wear skinny jeans (and so did i) so I can't talk too much shit lol

Wackerman certainly is a fantastic drummer. Probably the most technically proficient drummer Frank has ever had and the longest tenured.
I'm not a fan of the electronic drums in the '84 tour either. It had that 80s sound which I'm not a fan of. They were used at Frank's request. Something I fault him on.
40 years ago this month, in Dec. of 1983, I was at a holiday party where the host had the TV on, and a Barbara Streisand holiday concert special was playing. I find that music cringe, but I couldn't voice my opinion at someone else's house.
I bring this up because the drummer on that gig was Chad Wackerman. When Frank wasn't touring, his musicians were free to do whatever they wanted. Chad landed that gig.
I wonder if he was bored to death playing "normal" music with no tricky impossible time signature passages in it to keep him on his toes?
A gig is a gig, but when you've play for Zappa, everything else must be boring.
