The back story is that during concerts in the 70's, inevitably someone in the audience would shout out "Whipping Post!" in request. Frank always thought wouldn't it be great if we could just, "Yeah, OK here, F U" and tear into the song. When Bobby Martin came into the band it was learned he could sing the snot out of it, and there ya go.

    In Zappa's band '81 - '88
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Martin_%28singer%29?wprov=sfla1
Why did Zappa chose to play Whipping Post? A long time ago, he heard a guy in the audience yelled out "Whipping Post!" and he said to that guy "next time we're back we'll learn it for you". Once that boot was sufficiently circulated it really became a thing at all FZ shows, everyone yelling for wp. I'm sure I have that tape somewhere!

Martin wasn’t singing falsetto according to him. Those high notes were part of his non-falsetto range. Recently The Zappa Band played at the Baked Potato in Studio City, CA. Three of the five in this band were in this video: Martin, Thunes and Ray White. Mike Keneally played keyboards and lead guitar while Joe (the vaultmiester) Travers played drums. Robert Martin still has it; vocally, on keys and saxophone!

The story goes this was the result of an audience member in Europe calling out a request for the song during one of Frank's shows. They could not fill the request at the time, but he made the band learn the song and next time they rolled through the town where they first encountered the request it was on the set list. Frank must have liked the song, as they played it fairly straight, as compared to their covers of "Purple Haze" and "I Am The Walrus."

But I was at the show at the Jones Beach theater the month prior. This was an amazing year for Zappa shows. On the studio version you can hear the opening and closing drum solos better and they are truly powerful sustained explosions.

Frank's mad scientist take on the blues. A great Alman Bros tune done true justice by Zappa.

Bobby Martin Singing/Keyboards. Zappa changed bandmembers practically every tour. And those Simmons drums sound dated, but the Player is Chad Wackerman. a great drummer in the line of Zappa drummers.

Frank concentrating on truckin right - repeatingly collecting his facial expressions, not looking too pleased and proud over the band.

Some of Frank's best were with balls out singers, Ricky Lancelotti on Wonderful Wino (Lost Episodes) and Zomby Woof (Overnite Sensation), his schoolmate Don Van Vliet, on Hot Rats, Lisa Popeil on Teenage (um) 'Professional' (Ship Arriving) and that mild mannered drummer Terry Bozzio on Punky's Whips. I'm probably forgetting some. For added interest Bobby Martin is the son of two opera singers, has been on tour with a ton of big names including Bette Midler, Paul McCartney, Bonnie Rait etc and recorded with Prince etc. Best of all he made the music for Cybil Shepherd's "Cybil' and was engaged to her for about four years, an eternity in the biz. If Cybil didn't ask for Whipping Post before a night of merriment at least once, she loses my respect.

That is the high pitched singer. Anytime you hear a high-pitched voice it's him. Tensile town album I remember. Yes, I don't know his name. I am an asshole. And I am four weeks late to this party.

At the legendary Helsinki Concert Frank asked the audience what they should play next. Somebody in the audience shouted: "Whipping Post". Frank said: "Oh sorry, we don't know that one. Anything else?" One of the rare instances that he played somebody else's music (like Stairways To Heaven or Bolero)

  • @marauder600

Frank and the band did a killer cover of stairway to heaven live too. On the best band you never heard in your life set. He covered purple haze on that set too. Killer stuff. Most bands couldn’t do what these guys did so well.

Always brightens my day to watch the beautiful Miss Graffiti and Dan 'The Man' Berg (hopefully not related to Friedrich Berg!) experiencing some great Zappa tunes for the first time.😎
I don't think Sifa looks "stoic", she seems to me to be listening intently (while she smartly leaves all the mugging for Dan to do as that is definitely more his thang😗)
Keep exploring Zappa's vast discography and Stay Safe over there! 💉😷👍

4 octave range B.Martin..plays all horns instruments and keyboard...i believe he led his school in all horn instruments..sax/french horn/trombone..Alan Zavod from Australia. on other keys...he ended up writing orchestral scores for ochestra/rock band concerto's....Was also the musical accompaniment to recently decease Bert Newton on morning show Australia...can play any style. Before his short spell with Zappa. He was a professor of music in Boston ..and was picked up by Duke Ellington to study at Berklee.Boston campus...so was no slouch..don't think he handled the discipline of Zappa but springboarded to other great things.Scored 40 movies and Tv shows and composed for orchestra's Australia ,Europe and US...HAD DOCTORATE IN MUSIC...hE IS SO BROAD MUSICALLY HE WOULD BLOW YOUR MIND TO SEE WHAT HE ACHIEVED IN HIS LIFE...go for a look yourself....he was a dynamo musically..composed for Olympic games..ect ect

That song was the reason I bought the album. 🙂 The US has plenty of culture. A lot of the countries that dispute that is usually based on arrogant jealousy. As an Australian I can attest to that.

Recently touring was "The Zappa Band", including Bobby Martin, Ray White, Mike Keneally and Scott Thunes, from original Zappa bands, and with Joe "Vaultmeister" Travers on the drums (from Zappa Plays Zappa). Also added to that is Jamie Kime, who player rhythm guitar for Dweezil. They all have considerable talent, and I particularly like Keneally's precision and flow, on guitar. Both singers still have potent voices and Travers is impeccable on drums. There are some RUclips videos. I don't think they are as practiced as ZPZ, but their interpretations are more free-flowing.

    • @thewaldfe9763
      @thewaldfe9763 2 года назад +1

I wouldn't say they are less 'practiced' - it's rather that they know the stuff so damn well that they are able to perform it almost as freely as they did on actual Zappa shows back then, instead of trying to exactly replicate an old recording.
