Asaf is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Israel. I'm a sucker for unique voices and Asaf (like Zhou Shen with his very special voice) is another of my favorite singers. When I Iisten to his voice, LP (Laura Pergolizzi) comes to my mind. You've heard her in the song "Mother Nature" by The Hu. There are some similarities between their voices. Actually one reactor, who is very familiar with LP, called Asaf the male version of LP.
I don't know if Asaf mentioned anyhing about the meaning of this song, but for me it's definitely a song about loss and longing. His lyrics are often very poetic.
What definitely stands out to me is the passion he sings with.
BTW, Ren recommended Asaf on his YT channel. 🙂 If you want to hear more from Asaf, I recommend his song "900 Days": ruclips.net/video/TgMZ0pGegI0/видео.html
He works with his loop station in this video.

Here is a background story about Asaf Avidan-
Asaf Avidan was born in Israel and grew up in Jerusalem. As the son of two diplomat parents, the family moved to Jamaica for several years, then New York, etc.. Later on, Asaf worked as a very successful animator in Israel and at the same time was in a long relationship (6 years) and he and his girlfriend lived in Tel Aviv during this time. Then around the age of 25 they broke up and it was very painful for Asaf and he decided at that point in time that he was leaving Tel Aviv and returning to Jerusalem and leaving a successful career that he felt he no longer wanted. Asaf wanted to express his feelings and emotions immediately and so he found the ability to do this through Music. He taught himself to play every possible musical instrument and started writing songs. He is a master in Looping. (I should mention that already in his youth he was very fond of poetics. One of the first books he read as a child was by Yehuda Amichai - a well-known poet and writer in Israel and Asaf was greatly influenced by him and this is one of the reasons he started writing even then). He reads a lot of books and loves poetics and goes deep into any subject that interests him. He founded a band called "Asaf avidan & mojos", and they started performing in Israel and then successfully abroad as well and after several years Asaf decided to embark on a solo career. His musical influences are diverse and one of his idols is Leonard Cohen..According to him, when Leonard Cohen passed away, something important died in us as a society.. it's important to him that such a rare breed of artists don't disappear . He feels that it's very important that this type of art continues to exist.
I find Asaf Avidan to be the most interesting and fascinating artist in every possible aspect. He is a tremendous performer with a divine voice.Asaf has been performing very successfully in the world for many years.Asaf has spectacular albums and a new album is about to be released soon..He has been living in Europe for years and today he lives in France.

He is also a cancer survivor. This had a lot of influence on his song writting.

Asaf loves singing about pain and darkness, to put some beauty to our everyday struggles. Here is my interpretation of this song:
I think Asaf himself is the "cold sparrow" lying on the floor, feeling dead inside, in what feels like a dark room. A light under the door, a gold shadow creeping in.. gives him a glimpse of hope inside, but he doesnt want to believe it. It's as true as lipstick. Decieving. Wanting it but not yet being brave enough to believe it to be real. A bent willow might represent someone who has gone through hardships in life or bent themselves to someone else's demands?
Painted blue, meaning full of sorrow. Painful memories of someone (or of himself) lying, betraying. "The voices are her" - maybe this is his guilty conscience dwelling over and over on what happened. "Has he been here before?" It feels familiar, a repeating cycle of destructive patterns.
I think pulling his world to the girl drifting away from him might mean that he wants to bring his perspective to her, make her understand his world, his person. "This is me, this is all I have". A silver distance, but a river of resistance... there's a barrier of some kind. Maybe the fear of putting yourself out there again, fear of being betrayed. "There was a time before all the leaves covered the beauty of Adam and Eve, and they were blind, and they were free to be whatever they wanted to be" - I take this as an expression of frustration over how complicated we've made things in society, all the religious norms imposed on us, the high expectations we ahve of each other. When love and human relationships could be so much simpler and more natural if we worked with a sense of compassion and acceptance for each other.

What a great reaction!! Love love love Asaf's music, even though it's usually not my style of music, but he didn't care - he hijacked my brain completely and I can't resist him 😂 It's wonderful to watch reactions to Asaf's songs and share the experience. You have to do more!!
His lyrics are quite complex, although he tries to use familiar words, but they are very symbolic. It gives me great pleasure to interpret his lyrics.
