  • How to mix metals when styling your jewellery: based on your skin undertone, you can style different metal colors together & visually play with proportions. In this video I explain 4 ways of doing so, to either match your skin and your outfit or create intentional contrast. Rules are meant to be broken :-)

I usually like wearing silver in summer because my skin (even though I burn) gets a bit warmer and slightly darker, and I like the contrast. On the other hand, I usually wear gold in the winter to "warm me up". I'm cool toned by the way.

Fellow olive undertone here! Because olive means a green undertone, it is in between cool (blue) undertone and warm (yellow) undertone, so advice for neutral undertones usually applies fairly well. Your olive might tend a bit towards blue or yellow still, so gold might be slightly more flattering than silver, or vice-versa, but you should be able to wear all three metals :)

    • @mariap3617
      @mariap3617 3 года назад +7

@@tm6408 thanks for the info! I've found that I look better in more cool tone palettes than warm, silver dominates my jewellery box, but earth tones are our most suitable palettes I believe. Those darker shades of green, olive green, khaki, moss... Autumnal colours like dark orange and deep red... having green undertone can be tricky but in the end of the day you just have to find what works for you

Such a good point and I have noticed and been perplexed by that! SO many shoes, bags, even details on hats and such are only sold in golden hued hardware. As someone who personally likes to match all of my metals, and who is cool-toned (therefore wearing silver) it's very annoying when the handbag throws the entire outfit off. I hope brands will take into account both undertones in the future!

Nicely explained. I avoid mixing metals, always thought it looked weird, but I see now that it's because I wear very few pieces and they're far apart, so there isn't any nice contrast effect.
And the statement about hardware on bags being usually gold was really surprising! In my experience, vintage bags/shoes/belts are often gold, but modern ones are almost always silver. I'm always looking for gold hardware and having hard time.

I also suspected that you were neutral, and it’s really fascinating to see that for you, the colour you’re wearing, contrasts beautifully with your skin (in my opinion) meaning in the blue (cool) top, your skin looks gently sun kissed and glowing (leaning warm); in the green (warm) top, your skin looks more translucent and rosy (leaning cool). Thanks for another interesting video! I remember after watching your video on skin tones and trying to determine my skin tone, I eventually was convinced that I was neutral :) which might not be the case yet I seem to like wearing both gold and silver... Thanks for the tips on how to pair both and also how to accentuate the jewelry through pairing with different undertone garments, that is something I am yet to try.

Merci, Justine! I've long been a metal mixer, but haven't ever considered most of what you lay out here. I feel silly, because your breakdown is so logical & thoughtful. Now I'll be a bit more intentional when mixing my metals. I laughed when you got to the hardware on handbags, something that has always bugged me. Over the years, I've chafed against the idea that my handbag gets to dictate what jewelry I wear, so my solution: ignore it. No handbag is going to tell me what to do! And this is coming from a woman with far too many bags (I love them!). So if I have a bag with gold hardware & I'm wearing silver, I just keep the bag away from my upper body. Not the most elegant solution, but it works for me. Or at least I think it works for me. Maybe others are scandalized when they see me!

Don't feel silly, these are just options, there are probably more possible ways to think about it or put it into practice! 😊

I love your explanations, even though I shameless wear any color jewelry and maybe in a Xmas tree style.

I just got the new Chanel 19 purse and they have mixed metals on it. I would have never thought about mixing metals but for some reason, it looks good. I am a warmer tone so I enjoy wearing gold.

Thank you for your informative and lovely videos. Love them! To answer your Q about how we see you: You do seem cooler-toned on video.
I'm a bright winter and have found that I can wear bright shiny gold with silver but rose gold or very yellow gold especially when close to my face makes me look 'hot/red'.

Justine, I love your channel and hear your voice as I declutter my closet this season. I have a challenge that I see no one yet addressing. That is how to purge jewelry. How do you choose what works and what to do with jewelry that you’d like to let go of. Also, I wear scarves mostly as accessory, rather than jewelry and would like tips on how to reconsider jewelry as an option.

    Hi Justine,
thanks a lot for those insights! I really enjoy your videos - even though most of them cater to women, I find them to be very interesting and informing (fast fashion), and sometimes even applicable to me (skin undertone, jewellery). So: I am totally down for the “how to be perceived based on your colour palette” follow-up video! ✌️

Also, I love that you consider all skin undertones in your collections! Please let us know in case you’ll ever happen to release some men’s/unisex clothing items or jewellery (like maybe some leather bracelets 👀).

I wear silver and white gold. I like your hair like this with a little volume. Different eye shadow...makes your blue eyes stand out.
