Thanks for this video! I recently purchased both a Frost Spirit V3 and a Phantom Spirit EVO and was waiting for this review before deciding what to use with my 7950X. Different Perspective: Couldn’t the Phantom Spirit EVO just be used as a lower noise Phantom Spirit SE if one just limits the RPM of each fan to 1500rpm just like the SE fans are limited to rather than just allowing it to ramp up to 2150RPM? It wouldn’t be higher performing than the SE, but it would be equal performance at a lower noise floor which should be an automatic win. Seems like the Frost Spirit still wins on the 7950X though.
My all-black Peerless Assasin is mated to two Silent Wings 4 I had. Gotta say that its super effective cooling my AM4 CPU and the only way I can hear them is if I manually crank their speed up. Noctua and the other big players have their back against the wall. Can't wait to see what they come up with in their future products.
what cpu are you using? I am thinking about modifying my peerless assassin with different fans too, or getting a different cooler altogether. Getting really good temps, but I think the noise level is a bit too high. Using it on a 7800x3d
Noctua at least intend to release new cooler this year But I also won't be surprised if they don't and keep their same cooler lineup for another 50 years.
I'm planning to put 2 Silent Wings 4 120 HS to the Phantom Spirit Se. I wonder if there will be any annoying noise compared to stocks. I saw some videos people put Noctua to it and sound profile is unbearable.
I bought this CPU cooler last black friday to go in my new gaming rig with a 7800X3D and it was mainly because Thermalright has so many excellent CPU cooler with extremely good value. It look really wonderful in my black and orange PC look. Also, I'm using only the fan between the 2 towers in it and the CPU never goes above 75C and is extermely silent. I could configure the fan more aggressively, but it would increase the noise and the temperature is very acceptable like it is now.
Im so glad a company like thermalright shows the competetion that aircooling doesnt need to always go up in price. I remember to buy quailty larger aircoolers from brands like noctua, and be quiet they would always be 80+ dollars. Now with thermalright its less than $50
Just installed a Phantom Spirit 120 SE on a system with a AMD 7900X and it's working great. Idle core temps in the low to mid 30s C, and below 90 C on maxed out stress benchmarks. Really exceptional bang, or I should say cooling, for the buck.
Interesting testing, especially compared to Tom's Hardware, where the EVO was always ahead at 100% Pushing Power (I guess at a normalized 38db it's a different story in the long run). What I would love to see, since the TL-C12 Fans seem to be generally good (used on Peerless Assistan, Phantom Spirit, etc). How would the TL-C12Pro compare on the Thermalright Coolers or in general use (Radiator, Case Fan etc), since they are a very very cheap option too, sitting at like 6,50€ vs the TL-C12 for 6€ (or even the TL-G12). Could that be the best new Budget Option for people, after Arctic P12 being basically the same price nowadays?
@@HardwareCanucks I guess that's why you need to test it? 'Cuz it can certainly fit. I've seen images on reddit of T30 in the mid of this heatsink, with clips, even.
Turbulence noise generally comes from people not realizing putting a fan pulling next to an object creates much more noise causing people to drop fan speed overly low to compensate for the noise penalty. Always gap pull fans on heatsinks unless the heatsink has designed this gap into it like the Noctua U9S with raised edges for the pull fan side. You can use all sorts methods to gap it from felt pads to gaskets designed to create this gap by Noctua.
I would LOVE to see the Arctic Freezer 36 (black) compared to this cooler, it's only €25 and according to other reviews its on par with the Noctua D15. Haven't found a review where both the Phantom Spirit 120 EVO and Arctic Freezer 36 are compared though. Great video as always!

Strong doubt on that one. One is single tower, the other is dual tower...
@look at the temps on reviews, the Arctic Freezer 36 is a beast for the price and size... But I remember that on GN review on Intel or AMD (don't remember in what, I think it's AMD, since for Intel they have the special mount, but not sure), but I remember that in one brand was worse than in the other, like from top performer to middle of the stack.
Yeah they perform so well on Intel due to the included contact frame
8 месяцев назад
@@lefthornet just rewatched that review, it was mostly on par with the NH-D15 when not slightly higher, but the NH-D15 fans running at a much lower speed(1k rpm/s) versus the almost 1,6k rpm/s on the arctic.
It's Arctic's forced contact frame's fault. If your processor doesn't have bending or if you use a Thermalright contact frame for competing coolers, Freezer 36 won't have such a big advantage.
I feel that this is perfectly fine given the price point with the look AND using it on a relatively low power draw chip. I think your testing illustrates well that it should be more than adequate for use on something like a 7800x3d. If you're spending the money for something with higher power draw and performance for productivity then it is worth it to go for the SE or since you're already spending more money go for a premium brand... The blacked out look with the subtle led is just tooooo good to pass up. Looks absolutely stellar in a tinted glass case on a blacked out motherboard with a black graphics card.
I might kindly suggest you retest the gaming results of the Assassin IV here, it doesn't make sense that it would be 6C behind the AK620 in gaming, but ahead of the AK620 in both 180w and 253W loads.
My results are very different. The Evo is better than the SE in my testing, probably because I had it in an actual working PC, not open bench, not with the side off or anything like that. This was with a 13700K. It was also quieter in most usage cases because it didn't need to throttle, because it was a better cooler.
I often wonder about their test bench 'control' group kind of setting. I'd say, in most cases, you'd want to test these things in a real world setting, in a case, etc, because airflow matters when cooling, and so would CFM, other parts' heat as well, and an enclosed case dampening the fans a bit. I know there are reasons to test on the bench with minimal parts, but if you're using the same kind of controls in a case, it should give similar data.
I decided on the Phantom spirit 120 SE rgb after watching your videos for my 13700k system and been very impressed with it. I had to move the fans up a bit to clear my G.skill ram but still far better than the old air cooler
Did you moved the fan wihout any mounting issues? I have Corsair Vengeance RGB 32GB(2X16GB) 6000Mhz CL30 (CMH32GX5M2B2B6000Z30K), and I'm worried about the maximum available offset height to avoid overlapping the RAM strips. My mobo is Asrock B650M Pro Rs.
Speaking on fans………I attached an older “gentle typhoon” to a Corsair H60 AIO with its single fan Radiator. It keeps a 12600k with no power limits around 75 C at 100% load. It’s all about the fans.
I wish you had left a visual warning or space before the end of the scene where you played the fan noise. Because I had the volume turned all the way up, and I got scared when the speech came in all of a sudden.
Depending on where you look each of these coolers outperforms the other Tom's says EVO, GN says Peerless Assassin, PC Analytics says Phantom Spirit, here they say Phantom Spirit SE. I'm still recommending the Phantom Spirit, its the replacement for the Peerless Assassin and the 120 SE models are the cut down versions. There's even a replacement rumored for the larger Frost Commander coming soon.
@@drewnewby "Depending on where you look each of these coolers outperforms the other Tom's says EVO, GN says Peerless Assassin" One could interpret this as Gamers Nexus has tested both the Peerless Assassin and Phantom Spirit, and concluded that the Peerless Assassin is superior.
I actually bought this one a couple of months ago before all the reviews started rolling in. Good thing too since it seems like it's been unavailable as of late? I was using a Corsair H100i Platinum before but it would get noisy and the RGB on the cpu block was always messed up, like it wouldn't display blues correctly. Since I'm running a 9600K (at 5.2GHz) it doesn't usually have to work very hard so it's been pretty quiet especially compared to the old AIO I had. I plan to upgrade to a newer platform (probably AM5) sometime in the next year hopefully so I just considered this my first piece of a new build lol.
Wasn't really sure what recent video would be best to ask on, but any plans on reviewing the Scythe Wonder Tornado and Grand Tornado soon? You guys are my go-to for fan reviews so curious to see where these land on the air cooling fan charts.
Well, I'm still thinking of getting it since the price is not that different and I want the black aesthetic, but I understand why you responded before not to get it. Also curious if there have been consideration on adding the 7800X3D to testing cause of its recent popularity.
Thanks for this. I was looking for comparisons between these two coolers to upgrade the workshop PC from a stock intel cooler and grabbed the PS120 SE for $35. The Evo is $49.
I'm pretty disappointed.....when I saw the noise charts in the beginning I was excited but the temp testing is a letdown. I guess I'll stick with recommending the PS120SE, then. Thanks for the quality vid as always :)
Did they pull the PS 120 EVO off the market so they could sell their older models? I have not been able to find it on Amazon or any store, and I live in the US where this is normally not a problem.
3:45 I think what's missing from this analysis here is the actual airflow. According to TR specs, the TL-C12C can hit 66.17CFM at just 1550 RPM while the supposedly superior TL-K12 needs 2150 RPM to produce 69 CFM. To me, this makes the cheaper C12C seem like the better fan so the fact that it's louder at the same RPM doesn't matter because it's also likely pushing much more air and the K12 can only produce more air by brute force.
@@HardwareCanucks Makes sense. I didn't see the airflow number. BTW, the fan on the regular Phantom Spirit is TL-C12B. The TL-C12C or anything with C at the end spins counter-clockwise.
since you love so much phantom spirit you need to check all of 120mm fans you have and swap them with stock tl-c12 ;> and btw can you sqeeze noctuas d15 fan between towers ?
Damn I'm so disappointed and chocked by those results. I just received the Phantom Spirit 120 EVO (ordered this model beacause I wanted the black cooler) and was waiting on my P12MAX fans to swap them. I guess I'll return it and buy the standard one.
Black cooler was the cherry on top. Top tier performance was the goal ;) And I’ll sacrifice looks over performance anytime. That’s why my first cooler was a noctua.
11:44 have you tried attaching the T30s on the extreme sides of the cooler towers. Not sure if the fan clips would allow it, but there's only one way to find out ;)

Couldn't I just replace those fans with two Akasa Piranha ones? They may only spin at up to 1900 RPM, but they have a higher CFM (79.13) and more static pressure (3.04 mm H2O). They also have the same width as the Thermalright fans that go in there.

Props to Noctua for the engineering. China are proving it can be done cheaper
Phantom Spirit 120 RGB does have a bit of whining noise at high speed. It is not bad. Just there. I am glad they address this with better fans. I am happy with my Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120SE ARGB. It keeps my AMD 5900X nice and cool. And love the price. There are others that are higher price that are better, but the improvement is not enough to justify it being so.
This was an interesting video and very good analysis, thanks Mike!
thank's for the review as always !
quite funny to see thermalright competing with themselve and actually "losing" 🤣
My bet for they're next product is a dual 140mm air cooler or atleast i would like that
Thanks for another great review! For the case of SW Pro 4, which mounting type did you use? I am considering mixing the fans with the cooler for the best performance based on your review.
I've been using a Phantom Spirit SE with 2 Noctura NF-A12 fans and its really nice. I'm Slowly changing all my fans to NF-A12's.
already bought PS evo 3 months ago when im building new computer when people are recommending phantom assassin etc but i want to support thermal right and i dont mind spending abit more for their latest product knowing they wont disappoint, its doing my 7800x3d chip good, converted from custom water cooling full loop to air cooler and no regrets at all. easier maintenance and easy to replace component as and when i want without trouble of draining water and dismantling everything. no regrets!
please always do the fan change test on every cooler review. that was interesting
@@psobbtutorials6792 right now it's a 5600X but I'm planning to upgrade to an X3D chip at some point
Noctua at least intend to release new cooler this year
But I also won't be surprised if they don't and keep their same cooler lineup for another 50 years.
My Arctic P12 max peerless assassin: "hahahahah, Baka"
I'm planning to put 2 Silent Wings 4 120 HS to the Phantom Spirit Se. I wonder if there will be any annoying noise compared to stocks.
I saw some videos people put Noctua to it and sound profile is unbearable.
Been using this cooler for a couple months, so far so good.
dUDE THANK YOU FOR THE NOISE LEVEL CHART. EXTREMELY USEFUL I SUBSCRIBE!
Now with thermalright its less than $50
Most underrated channel. Thank you 🫡
God bless you guys for testing both Intel and AMD.
Just installed a Phantom Spirit 120 SE on a system with a AMD 7900X and it's working great. Idle core temps in the low to mid 30s C, and below 90 C on maxed out stress benchmarks. Really exceptional bang, or I should say cooling, for the buck.
Do you guys have a tier list? Im struggling to keep up with all the recommendations!
Frost Spirit 140 BLACK V3 is fricking DOPE! What a cooler!
T30 fits in by the way. you need to remove the dumpers and insert the T30 from the side...
Wouldn't that increase vibration transfer to the fin array?
@@HardwareCanucks I guess that's why you need to test it? 'Cuz it can certainly fit. I've seen images on reddit of T30 in the mid of this heatsink, with clips, even.
Thats a tasteful amount of RGB
Turbulence noise generally comes from people not realizing putting a fan pulling next to an object creates much more noise causing people to drop fan speed overly low to compensate for the noise penalty. Always gap pull fans on heatsinks unless the heatsink has designed this gap into it like the Noctua U9S with raised edges for the pull fan side. You can use all sorts methods to gap it from felt pads to gaskets designed to create this gap by Noctua.
Amazing work! Deserves more likes!
@@lefthornet just rewatched that review, it was mostly on par with the NH-D15 when not slightly higher, but the NH-D15 fans running at a much lower speed(1k rpm/s) versus the almost 1,6k rpm/s on the arctic.
It's Arctic's forced contact frame's fault. If your processor doesn't have bending or if you use a Thermalright contact frame for competing coolers, Freezer 36 won't have such a big advantage.
love your reviews, and your wallpaper!
This is exactly the information I was looking for.
we love budget options
I decided on the Phantom spirit 120 SE rgb after watching your videos for my 13700k system and been very impressed with it. I had to move the fans up a bit to clear my G.skill ram but still far better than the old air cooler
Did you moved the fan wihout any mounting issues? I have Corsair Vengeance RGB 32GB(2X16GB) 6000Mhz CL30 (CMH32GX5M2B2B6000Z30K), and I'm worried about the maximum available offset height to avoid overlapping the RAM strips. My mobo is Asrock B650M Pro Rs.
@@7iomka no issues at all moving the fan up. The fan flips just slide in between the fins on the heatsink
What was your previous cooler? And how better this one?
@@perfect_combination tower cooler that comes with the legion 7i. About half the size of this. Temps dropped about 5c idle and 20c on heavy loads.
Ditched my Liquid Freezer II 280mm for Phantom Spirit 120 EVO for 5950x. Temp is practically the same in most of my use cases.
Speaking on fans………I attached an older “gentle typhoon” to a Corsair H60 AIO with its single fan Radiator. It keeps a 12600k with no power limits around 75 C at 100% load. It’s all about the fans.
Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE work ok with a 5700x3d?
I wish you had left a visual warning or space before the end of the scene where you played the fan noise. Because I had the volume turned all the way up, and I got scared when the speech came in all of a sudden.
In left top corner is countdown before Mike speaking again. 5 seconds before
Just bought this along with a 5800x3d upgrade. Cant wait for them to arrive! :D
Gamers Nexus has never tested the Phantom Spirit, only the Peerless Assassin.
I didn't say they did?
@@drewnewby "Depending on where you look each of these coolers outperforms the other Tom's says EVO, GN says Peerless Assassin"
One could interpret this as Gamers Nexus has tested both the Peerless Assassin and Phantom Spirit, and concluded that the Peerless Assassin is superior.
Should you use the paste that this cooler includes or let's say buy noctua thermal paste and the result would be even better? Or worse?
Looks like the huge fan hub interferes with actual amount of air being moved through fins at equal rpm vs SE
Wasn't really sure what recent video would be best to ask on, but any plans on reviewing the Scythe Wonder Tornado and Grand Tornado soon? You guys are my go-to for fan reviews so curious to see where these land on the air cooling fan charts.
I’m really interested in seeing how the Scythe Mugen 6 compares to these, both in single and dual fan configs.
The Evo is $49.
crazy that the Noctua NH-D15 is literally 10 years old and still shows up towards the top of the list
True that bro, but always remember it runs 2x 140mm fan which would always upperhand against 120mm
This video was so well made! You can pat yourselves on the back, @HardwareCanucks!
if I want the phantom spirit in all black can I take the phantom spirit evo and change the fans ?
So until 1500rpm the Evo seems the better pick for quiet gaming. Is the cooling of the Evo until 1500 rpm enough for quiet gaming on 7800x3d?
I'm pretty disappointed.....when I saw the noise charts in the beginning I was excited but the temp testing is a letdown. I guess I'll stick with recommending the PS120SE, then. Thanks for the quality vid as always :)
Thermalright is killing it lately!
Did they pull the PS 120 EVO off the market so they could sell their older models? I have not been able to find it on Amazon or any store, and I live in the US where this is normally not a problem.
I think its a stock issue since here in Canada the EVO is readily available.
I use them almost exclusively including their 240mm AIOs. Thermalright ILMs are great too for LGA1700 and AM5 mobos.
Its not really the flow that matters as much as the static pressure in this case.
Was there any thermal difference between the two Phantom Evo models?
I´d like to know as well. Would be nice if this gets answered. But i assumed they were basically the same or else it would have been mentioned.
Damn I'm so disappointed and chocked by those results.
I just received the Phantom Spirit 120 EVO (ordered this model beacause I wanted the black cooler) and was waiting on my P12MAX fans to swap them. I guess I'll return it and buy the standard one.
If you wanted a black cooler than returning it won't solve anything since the original isn't black. ;)
Black cooler was the cherry on top. Top tier performance was the goal ;) And I’ll sacrifice looks over performance anytime.
That’s why my first cooler was a noctua.
@@bYeRaiden man, noctuas are butt ugly for some reason.
Got the PS120SE last year, slapped on some extra NF-A12x25 im not using, BIS currently for air cooling an NR200 ITX, cools 14700K no issues
11:44 have you tried attaching the T30s on the extreme sides of the cooler towers. Not sure if the fan clips would allow it, but there's only one way to find out ;)
Yo, I thought this was a different guy for a second. Dude shed off some excess weight. Good job!
Having 2 kids under 2 years old helps.....
@@HardwareCanucks well holy moly. That sounds like all the workout one needs. I had to tend to a toddler some years back and I felt drained at the end of every day. I could not imagine having to deal with 2. 😅
I've bought a few of these. I'm not actually using them, but have them in case my AIO ever goes out!
I have the spirit evo. Instead of the stock fans, I am using Superflower megacool 120mm 30mm thick fan that came with my psu. Fits in without issues.
are they much quieter?
i built the tower 300 already and i loveee it
So, for someone more concerned about noise than temperatures, which one would be better? WELSHYTECH compared them and the EVO sound even if it might be louder in dB, appears to be more of a smooth sound when compared to the SE, thoughts on this?
Great videos btw ! Helping me a lot for first build. Subscribed
I love your content and I discovered the channel recently. I have a build based on the Fractal land with a noctua nh l9x65 That I don't like so much even if it does its job... What would you recommend for such a small build?
Any plans on reviewing the Scythe Mugen 6 (normal and black edition)? Really interested in seeing some more reviews on it. Seems like it could be a winner when it comes to noise-normalized performance.
Couldn't I just replace those fans with two Akasa Piranha ones? They may only spin at up to 1900 RPM, but they have a higher CFM (79.13) and more static pressure (3.04 mm H2O). They also have the same width as the Thermalright fans that go in there.
Got the classy thermalalright assassin 120 for 32$ on sale and it's lowered my 5700x temps to a nice 68c pushing emulation, modded cyberpunk, and video rendering.
Is it possible to throw on a third fan? I want to say with an extra fan clip it's possible but not sure, has anyone tried this? If so, any temp. difference?
Need to review Thermalright Royal Knight, please
