A magnificent pair of pistols. I am wondering if they were a commission or were a staple of the manufacturers catalogue. You touched on something which is interesting ie; that they may have been surrendered to authorities on demand. Given the current climate in the UK I wonder if plans are in place to conduct a similar exercise should it deemed to be necessary at any point.
On the subject of surrendering to the authorities; during one visit to the old gun shop I used to work in, by the Police. A throw away remark from them was that, in breakdown of society, we would be the first place they would raid to scoup up all the weapons so not to fuel the unrest ! Reassuring eh !
Those heavy pistols could be classified as "Horse Pistols" which would have been carried in pommel holsters attached to a horse saddle due to their size and weight.

I can see that. Heavier barrels, less bouncing around while trying to aim. Yet very fine sights…
