- An 8mm home movie filmed during the Summer of 1970 in Piedmont Park, Atlanta, Georgia. Free concerts featuring local bands were held in the park almost every weekend during the Summer months for several years in the late 1960s and early 1970s and all-day festivals were occasionally held. This video documents a portion of one of those festivals that I had the pleasure to attend and, hopefully, captures the 'flavor' of the time period. If anyone who watches the video was there, I would love to hear from you.
I was there. That is my green and white '61 VW van at 2:47.

Lived across the street from the park back then. Many great free concerts. Allman Brothers, Wet Willie, Atlanta Rhythm Section. 10th & Peachtree: "the Strip"! Great Speckled Bird!
I was born right at 1970 but listening to my mom's stories and the music I wish today's life was filled with the love and spirit of the people of the time I miss my mom alot so I go down memory lane by revisiting on RUclips
I was there, virtually every weekend of the Spring and Summer of 1969 and 70. Heard lots of killer music, smoked lots of killer weed and met lots of groovy chicks. This was the only way to live as a young adult. For those of you who missed it, put down that fucking smart phone, get out of the house and stop wasting your life. Oh yes, stop listening to crappy music, it's bad for your head.
I was there.The younger people cannot imagine the atmosphere and the feeling of love that was in the air until Nixon and the Blue Meanies came.No joke it was the closest that I ever came to Heaven and this Earth.Piedmont Park was my home. Peace
I attended GA Tech from '82-'87. I met an older guy who went to Tech in the years around 1970 and saw ABB there amongst the other shows. He told me that one day the hippies from the strip went over to campus to protest the Vietnam War and got chased off by students throwing rocks at the protesters. Such was the conservatism of GA Tech at the time. Also, .... I did have alot of fun in the park. Despite missing the early days, I did see many wonderful concerts there. One of my favorites was King Sunny Ade' in '83. My buddies and I would drop acid and wander around, and one day happened upon a local reggae band, the Skin Kings, who were doing a tribute to Bob Marley. They had a lead guitarist with an amazing tone who played much longer and more frequent solos than you would typically hear in a reggae band. The audience was largely black, and so literally sitting at the feet of this lead guitarist tripping balls, I imagine I looked a pretty goofy kid. But I was thrilled out of my gourd. I share all this to say I can somehow relate to what was going on there in 1970 while watching this video.
Band at 1:30 was Hydra . Trip Burgess on bass before Orville Davis from the Brick Wall took that slot
You are probably also aware that the name of the band prior to Hydra was Osmosis.
Those were the best of times! All the head shops between 8th and 14th street; Cops and Robbers, Atlantis Rising, the Catacombs, etc. I can still smell the incense and patchouIi oil. The Allman Brothers and Brick Wall, and others I can't recall, were frequent bands that played at Piedmont Park. One of the musicians from the Brick Wall went on to play in Hydra. Great times, until the riot that brought it all down. I think it was 1971. It was in the afternoon at one of the music festivals, and this dude gets arrested for smoking hash. He was in the police car and a bunch of hippies decide to start rocking the car in protest. Well, the next thing you know, all hell breaks loose and it's pandemonium! Rioting went on for hours. I know what it feels like to have a tear gas canister explode at your feet. National guard was brought in, then the Mayor came. That was the beginning of the end. After that day it was never the same.
Had some goodtime's back in those days Piedmont and Chastain park!

She lived in the same "Hippie house" as me on 14th Street but, sadly, I cannot remember her name after all these years.
Back before Atlanta got taken over by criminals.

I grew up in the burbs of Atlanta and hit the strip and Piedmont Park every chance I could. My two oldest children cut their teeth and took their first steps to the free music in the park every weekend. Many of the great musicians my friends and I saw there have gone on to their rewards, but many are still rocking. PEACE OUT AND KEEP ON TOKIN' GEORGIA GIRL LOST IN ALABAMA.
LIVED FOR "THE STRIP" FROM 1966 TILL 1974
Many memories, the Strip- head shops, pizza joints, hole-in-the-wall bars and strip clubs, sidewalks full of hippies on Friday and Saturday nights. Straight folks would ride down Peachtree and gawk in amazement! Now street of banks, expensive hotels and tall office buildings. Oh well, money wins again.
I went to a Piedmont Park show with my parents in 1970. I was six. Wish I knew what band was playing. I was more impressed with everyone throwing frisbees around the audience, hoping I could catch one.
Thanks for posting this great memory......I was there that day also.....I played in another Discovery Inc. band, and I remember Trip (bassist for Hydra) playing thru that mountain of Peavey bass amps.......I think one of the people on the front row in the video is me....not really sure.....but I remember I was very close to the band.
Chastain Part had a lot going on besides all of the great music happening at that time if you get my drift.

I was there I got to Atlanta in March of 70. I spent a major amount of time at Piedmont Park. Great times
I missed this year there as I was attending a get together in Vietnam and trying to stay alive. But was there the years before and a few after until the bikers took over.
The Outlaws biker club did have a presence in the park for several years until the Atlanta police forced them out of the city.
I was there that day. Wish the video was a bit sharper. Was looking for myself in the opening scene. I was only 15 at the time. Couldn't see over all the big people so I climbed atop one of the concrete columns.
Perpetual Motion played there many Sundays. Those were our best gigs ever!

I was seven years old, I remember going to Piemont park when I was younger it was the place to go.

The lady from 2:48-2:52 looked like a person that I know. She graduated from the Atlanta School of Arts from that year. She got a degree in painting. I remember her telling me that she went to the Atlanta Pop Festival in 1969 when she was 8 months pregnant with her daughter. She wanted to see Janis Joplin.

I saw the brothers there in 1970. I lived right behind Peachtree Battle shopping center. We were at the park all the time. I was 8 ☮️🍑🍄💜

Around this time (and before) there used to be fish-fry fundraisers in the Park where lots of people would spontaneously show up. It was nice and all but my Mother was working down there and a bunch of people decided to sit on her car - a 65 Ford Falcon (remember those?). They eventually moved when they saw we were just doing some service work but. There were plenty of "sqaures" for them to go bug ha ha

I was born and raised in Atlanta in 1971 and have a hard time believing our city was ever this interesting. Whoever that band was had a strong Grateful Dead fetish. The guy with the ES-335 could pass for Jerry Garcia and the blond bassist could be Phil Lesh. Thanks for the upload.

I was probably there that day. I lived on 10th Ave and went all the time. Saw the Allman Bothers there. Some friends played in a band called Brick Wall who were regulars there. I was there for the big riot. Good times.....

Does anyone remember a day-long concert in Fulton County Stadium in early 70s? With Zappa, Ten Years After, and other bands? Maybe a video? Thanks
I believe you are referring to The Cosmic Carnival that was held at the stadium in 1970. Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention, Ten Years After, Traffic, Mountain and a bunch of other bands performed at the event.

It was a beautiful warm day. We were sitting high in the upper deck, playing Trivia between bands. No-one around knew the name of Tom Mix's horse. Some time later Zappa's band was on stage tuning up. Frank stepped to the mic, announced, "Tom Mix's horse was Tony." We fell out of our seats - our little game had traveled all through the stadium and Zappa gave us the answer!
@@mikefannon6994 That is an entertaining anecdote. Frank Zappa was good that day. And the temperature was definitely warm. I believe it was either May or June. I remember that Mountain only played about fifteen minutes before the authorities shut down the event at midnight. Mountain was not pleased and informed the audience that they would return to play for free in Piedmont Park the following weekend. They were true to their word, however, it rained and they were unable to play.
