It's amazing how much of a difference sound makes in our communication.
I wanted to test out the differences between popular, semi-professional, and everyday microphones to see how they compared to each other.
Here's a comparison of how microphones sound ranging from an everyday device such as iPhone 7 to a lavalier mic which would be used in a corporate video.
Microphones compared are:
- Zoom H6 w/ snowball capsule
- iPhone 7 Plus built-in microphone
- Blue Yeti USB model
- $30 lavalier plugged directly into camera
What a helpful video. Appreciate the effort and explaining the constraints of setting it up.
Thank you!
Best comparison video. Thank you!
You're welcome and thanks for the feedback Lydia.
This was awesome!! Thank you for the comparison!!
You're welcome- thank you for watching!
Fantastic!! I own a H6, def getting the Yeti + studio arm for my Streams!
It’s a great microphone for the price Karissa. Be sure to get a studio arm that’s a bit beefier than average, Yeti has some weight to it 👍🏼
Thank you for the demonstration of all the mics, I will definitely stick with my Blue Yeti instead I litterly was planning to go buy a new mic keep on search videos and so happy I ended up watching your video thanks so much! ☺️👍
You're welcome- glad it was helpful!
Thanks it helped me to make the decision
Glad to hear, thank you for letting me know!
this is Awesome! Thank you!
You're welcome- thank you for the feedback 😀
great vid thanks!
You're welcome Isaac- thank you for the feedback.
Well done!
Thank you Steve!
There is also the practical aspect of it I think many people don't mention. I own the blue yeti which is great if you just stand on a desk...even then you need an arm, pop filter or at least a foam filter and it's heavy...the quality is awesome though. But the Blue Ringer to reduce vibrations, the Rhode Arm and the Blue Yeti costed me around 300$ and a good lavalier could cost you less than 200 and I think it's just more practical but of course it depends on everybody's situation
Your lavalier sounds deeper and very close to Yeti but it's so much more practical and I think you can also speak quieter and avoid echo in the room.
Good point- depending on the particular needs / situation, most of the time an inexpensive lavalier mic checks more boxes than the others 👍
Good video Daryle. Question for you... What if you had to be 1 to 2 feet further away from your mics? I am assuming the Lavalier would perform the best, correct? I sometimes wish I could do everything with the Yeti but if I am going to do video from an Iphone where I am going to be standing, would you suggest I try to fit the Yeti somewhere or would a Lavalier be better?
Thanks Emmanuel! Ok, two things to consider- connection and environment. If you're connecting to an iPhone, you can use a 35mm lavalier mic as an input. IF your camera device is going to be 1-2 feet away, you could use a shotgun mic, which would work decently, or use the yeti and position it out of frame best you could.
My suggestion though, especially for the price- get a 35mm lavalier off Amazon with 6ft cord and use that (I paid $18 for the one used in the video)- it'll give you great audio and is compatible with an iPhone. BE SURE TO GET A PROPER MIC ADAPTOR FOR THE IPHONE THOUGH- since the lavalier will be a mono input, you can get an adaptor for 35mm mics to phone inputs that'll make sure there's no issue... and it's not expensive, $3-$8 USD.
Thanks for this. I think I'm going to go with the Yeti and use a similar distance to you. Is that about 1-1.5 feet away? What are your recommended settings for this distance?
Hi Benjamin- the placement was about 18-24 inches away using the cardioid mode so only sound from the front is picked up. Two things to keep in mind with the Yeti- it's very sensitive so whatever program you're recording with, monitor and adjust the levels before you hit record. Because it's so sensitive, if you have it on a table, it'll pick up any sounds made on the table (like moving your hands on the table or bumping it with your knee).
I eventually bought an inexpensive boom arm and shock mount before eventually selling it which worked extremely well. Well, I actually had to buy two boom arms- the Yeti is a heavy mic and the first boom arm I got didn't hold it well.
What brand is the lavalier? I like the idea of being able to stand up while I'm recording, and I don't always have a table to set a yeti on. I have a yeti for my permanent studio, but I need something for when I'm out and about.
Hi Debbie! That lav was a generic $25 mic I picked up off Amazon w/ 6ft cord. I plugged it into the camera (be sure to adjust input levels!) and away I went.
I've recently bought Sennheiser's *new* wireless system (Set 508488) for $350 and it's astounding for the price!
I'll probably do an updated review with that. Let me know if you'd be interested to see it reviewed.

I’M GOING WITH THE ZOOM H6 AND IPHONE MIC SETUP BECAUSE IT ALLOWS THE MOST VERSATILITY AND CONVENIENCE.
FOR THE H6 TO WORK ON SONY FDR AX53, WILL I HAVE TO ADD A SEPARATE AUDIO IN POST PRODUCTION EDIT?
THEY ALL SOUND GOOD EXCEPT THE IPHONE BUT ITS CONVENIENT AS YOU STATED. ✅🤓
If you have a Sony FDR AX53 handheld camcorder, I’d recommend a shotgun or lavalier mic connected directly to the camera- unless I’m not misunderstanding something. Actually, for the price of the Zoom H6, Rode makes a great wireless mic set for $200 that works great with Sony handhelds.
Daryle Hamel THANK YOU. I DID PURCHASE THE HOTEC LAVALIER ($94). THE NOISE WAS TERRIBLE, SO I AGREE THAT THE PROPER LAVALIER MIC SYSTEM WILL BE BEST TO AVOID ALL THE HASSLE.
I FOUND OUT THROUGH ANOTHER RUclips VIDEO THAT THE H6 IS SEPARATE AUDIO THAT HAS TO BE ADDED AFTER RECORDING. WHILE THIS WILL BE IMPRACTICAL TO SOMEONE TRYING TO AVOID USING A COMPUTER TO EDIT AND ADD AUDIO, THE SOUND QUALITY OF THE H6 IS SUPERIOR AND THE SEPARATE AUDIO FILE ALLOWS A BACKUP TO ANYTHING THAT COULD GO WRONG WITH VIDEO RECORDING.
THANKS FOR HELPFUL FEEDBACK! 💪🏽👌🤓
OH AND I’M DOING AN iPHONE PODCAST BUT I WANT TO UPLOAD THE VIDEO VERSION TO RUclips. 👌
2:30
2:30 blue yeti
2:37
2:37 zoom h6
The music was alil too loud at the beginning
Thank you for watching Sup Jay and letting me know!
#1 Lavalier best, #2 Zoom prolly next best cuz no bg buzz, #3 Yeti has bg buzz but maybe better than Zoom, #4 iPhone worst
Thanks. But not really truthful comparison, because the zoom h6 was recording in stereo.
One thing not specified- all outputs were down mixed into a mono channel for output.
This was a truthful comparison though, no lies were told.
