Can You Beat Croc Without Collecting Crystals Or Gobbos?

I wanted to find out if you could beat Croc Legend of the Gobbos without any collectables whatsoever. This mostly means no Crystals and no Gobbos, but I will also be completely avoiding Hearts and Fireflies etc. Several keys are mandatory to beat certain levels, but optional keys are almost always off the beaten path anyway.

Yes please!
A fun thing about Croc that my brother and I figured out years ago: You can actually collect infinite Gobbos in it. The level in the castle themes where you do a bunch of minigames in a row has a glitch where you can collect a gobbo and a life, die, and then respawn and the gobbo returns. You can actually get so many Gobbos that it loops into using other symbols from the game, such as having "Croc Gobbos" or "Gobbo Gobbos". So basically, Gobbos range from 0 to Infinity.
At some point that value will roll over to 0 again.
So you can collect every Gobbo in the game, then do this glitch, then cause them to die from overpopulation.
Croc Gobbo Extinction%.
Sounds like a fun category for a meme or two.
Alright, time to do the "Can you beat Croc while collecting infinite Gobbos" video
@@Baltr there is actually an easier infinite gobbo loop that speedrunners do in one of the snow levels by constantly doing a loop through certain rooms instead of using a key you get to progress
Time to get 65,535 Gobbos. Ah yeah
@@dexxus8078 Croc: End of the Gobbos
Fun fact: Croc was originally a Yoshi racing game.
But Nintendo rejected the pitch, so the creators went to Sony instead, made him a crocodile, and wound up dumping the racing aspect as development went on.
Thinking about that that might be why there's a hover jump it's the flutter jump but the took out the animation but forgot to take out the physics.
Okay, I've got it!
What if Yoshi racing, only without Yoshi, and without racing?
Brilliant!
I genuinely like this game, aside from some slightly wonky camera controls/Croc controls, it's really fun. This was a crazy challenge run.
Never ever finished this game in my life, those later levels are absolutely brutal.
I have so much love for this Jenky Gem of a game. It was my first game, Christmas 1997, Opening a PS1 and Croc. I still have at least 1 annual playthrough of this game to this day, love it so much
I came to your channel for the Dark Souls Alphabetically video, and solidified my new subscription when I saw YOU HAVE CROC CONTENT! This game (well, the first two islands anyways) was a huge part of my childhood.
Yes! I love Croc. It was mascot 3D platforming defined for me as a kid. Mario 64 is cool and all, but give me Croc anyday
Nice! Finally somebody making some croc content!
Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed our first video. The plan was to make more challenge videos like this on games from the same era, but maybe if this video does well, and there's a Croc 2 challenge idea, I can make a video on that 😁
That's what I'm saying.
I love it.
ur.....
@@NGPlusVideos I can't think of one but I can't wait another Croc or a Croc 2 run
Croc is legit one of the most formative games of my "gaming" career. It was the first game I remember playing back in the day. Thank you for all the nostalgic feels and awesome run!
Omg, I played Croc a lot when I was a kid, here in Spain is really rare to find someone who knows about this game. I enjoyed the video so much! It feel very nostalgic 💛
This really is quite amazing. Not only did you cover a game no one seems to remember but also completed a brutal challenge. Hats off to you 👍
I remember seeing a ad for this game all the time on my Casper movie vhs
That crystal after the door. Pause then save exit reload and see if that works. Might spawn you in the doorway or remove crystal for you to spawn in.
Very cool and well narrated! Love the cuts! :)
Thank you so much! Here's to a new adventure on RUclips!
This game was my first real interaction with videogames. I played it a lot with my dad. Good memories
You just unlocked part of my childhood that I thought was a fever dream. I never beat this game idk if I beat the first level. But I must now
So yeah I've started binging your videos from the start now!
Absolutely love seeing a Croc challenge! I know you've got several Spyro videos and these are both big nostalgia hits from my childhood!
To be fair I think at least half of the games you've done are from my childhood haha.
Might skip straight to your FF8 no junctioning video after this as that does sound very interesting for me and awful for you!
8:44 Thanks, I needed that chuckle.
Damn the nostalgia 😂
Great job on the challenge run!
Hey, Croc content!
Never finished the game, but it was anyway really memorable.
There's over seven realms in this game!
WHAT
So happy to see some Croc love! Fantastic run!!
Nice to see someone else also doing content on Croc. Very nicely done with the challenge, it seems you are interested in platformers as well so consider me subscribed.
I loved Croc to bits as a kid, and watching you make short work of it with zero Gobboes is wonderful. I really should play it again - maybe try the PS1 version instead of my PC copy!
Never heard of this game before, but still very entertaining! ^_^ Keep it up!
A delightful lowest% run.
My cousin had Croc but the game never worked. Maybe it was scratched or whatever but every time I saw the case I opened it hopeing to play it like a fool. This is the first time Ive ever seen gameplay and I think a part of me is deeply satisfied. Thank you!
Good old croc, gg dude, so stressful these space jumps on the stairs 😁❤
I never heard of croc, but I was like 7 at that time it came out so that could be the reason why, croc looks so adorable,I wish I played it when I was little
The sarcastic delivery makes this
Great content.
Croc is a classic.
With 1 numbered console sequel so a 2 game console duology with the sad no Croc 3, and 2 Gameboy Color games as another duology, and 3 Java mobile games as a duology of platformers and a pinball game because of course every noteable game had a pinball game, at the time. XD Quite Ironic for duologies huh.
Also 2D mobile Mario clones (not seen as official just using a similar idea of name and the character) as well as Croc Pinball on Java mobile than the smartphone games making it around 11 games but 6 of the main ones of the 2 console (Croc 3 I think included even if never came about), 2 Gameboy Color and 2-3 Java mobile versions.
Not the smartphone (don't buy them on console) later games that aren't as related but bringing it to 11.
I'm still sad that I never completed Croc. One of the first few games I got for my PlayStation. Lovely to see this😊
Seeing Croc just zoom over a bottomless pit at a fixed altitude is kinda hysterical every time. Amazing. XP
Seems a little (only a little!) easier than Rayman 2 challange. In Croc you just hovered through the game, exactly the opposite of Rayman 2 no-hover run xD Would like to know which run was exactly more annoying and/or interesting for you.
And again, I'm waiting for more. Your channel is an (unfortunately) hidden gem. Hope you will grow with subs! Keep it up!
Oh Rayman 2 Hoverless was much more strenuous than Croc. I banged out Croc in few days (sorta like a practice video) but Rayman 2 took literally months. I almost quit so many times out of frustration. The video cut out so much of me just glitch hunting in every small part of each and every level I was stuck on. But with each level I overcame, I knew I had to see it through to the end.
Thank you for the compliments, I always wanted to make vids like this, and PS1/PS2 is my favourite gaming era :D
@@NGPlusVideos There is a lot of work, research and time you have to put into making this kind of videos and I really appreciate that. It's not just hitting the record button and doing some let's play.
Really interested in next games, at this moment it looks like you will stick with platformers (you said about Spyro in comm section under Rayman 2) but hope to see even more crazy ideas for those challange runs!
As far as Low% runs go, this is up there with "link stares at a rupee for 17 hours until he phases through a wall"
I tried over a hundred times to skip that crystal.
What ended up working was spamming left and right rapidly. First success was try 126. I then repeated it after another 37 tries.
No idea how it works, but it definitely does.
That's cool, thanks for doing that!
@NGPlus NP. Lol. I imagine you're not gonna give it a shot with numbers that inconsistent?
Spoken as someone who has played this game as recently as about 15 years ago, it might be possible to avoid the one crystal by unplugging your controller. I have absolutely no idea if this would actually work, but it's possible that IF Croc has the thing where it immediately pauses the game if no controller is detected/if all are disconnected, then you might trick the framerate of the game into miscalculating and letting you control Croc faster, or the game stopping his scripted movement faster.
But again, I have absolutely no idea if this would work or not...
It's a decent idea for sure. I like the out of the box thinking
I remember croc. Xroc was great. Some people remember glover, or chibi robo. I remember croc tho. And I was mostly a Nintendo gamer growing up
I have no idea what this game is, but i love challenge runs like this one a lot, so you just got a new subscriber.
Oh man, I love Croc! Classic PS1 platformer. There's a Sega Saturn version, but it's inferior. Thank you very much 😊
@@NGPlusVideos yea, now that i have watched the hole video i think it looks really fun, so i will try it out sometime. Its a really good video, and your commentary is really entertaining. I will binch watch all of your videos now. Hope you get big someday, you really deserve it.
In my opinion, because you didn't/can't control Croc when he walks out of doors and that Croc walking out of the door is completely scripted that the game made Croc collect the crystal on its own, you proved that you can beat this game without collecting any crystals, manually.
A Croc content? Quite a while since my playthrough (and Josh Hayes' review).
Croc is difficult 3D platformer as much as Captain Claw is difficulty 2D platformer.
I miss both Croc and Ape Escape. I need these to come back XD
Oh man I forgot about this game.... It did take a lot to fully complete it, more than what a child could honestly do imo.
Also, it's not too hard to beat this with little to no Gobbos rescued. It's avoiding the crystals that's probably hard. But I am saying this before actually watching the vid so I'll probably edit this comment. EDIT:
Oh wow, I didn't expect ANY crystals to be collected, but it happened. But as I thought, not getting a single gobbo was doable. Although that does mean not a single secret level is unlockable.
I redownloded croc onto my computer a week ago and finished it in two days. I’m kind of sad because it was way harder in my childhood and I kind of wanted it to be harder so I could play it for longer. Still though, I adore the game and soundtrack.
A sudden reminder in my recommendations that Croc is so adorable and I love the little lizard boy.
instant sub, great video
After all these years, I only now realised Croc was apparently secretly Jesus.
I wonder if it's possible to beat the special levels under these conditions?
Oh, I know, you can't GET to them that way (Gobbos are needed, and Colored Crystals are needed to get a Gobbo per level), but what about the levels themselves?
It is actually possible to get past some of the bonus room doors without having all the color crystals because some of them allow you to clip past the door into the loading zone anyway
This needs a remaster
What a game, I grew up with this guy
I'm late to the party, but I think trying to break his waking animation is the wrong way to go about it - perhaps getting in to the room without going through the door, is a better approach?
Great vid
Being able to beat Croc is an amazing feat on its own!
Holy shit this was the first game I actually owned as a kid with the Playstation! All the other games I played before were my brother's old SNES games :D
Hey there! Likin your challenge videos!
Question regarding the text you used though;
What, how or where, do you find text that matches the game you're talking about in the video? I've finished a sunset overdrive glitch video for my main channel, but I wasn't able to get text similar to sunsets font.
Hey! Gina here, I do the graphics and stuff. With a lot of games I'm able to find a downloadable font and use Photoshop to spruce it up a bit. Not all games have them available unfortunately, sometimes I have to find one that's just looks close. Dafont is a good website to search for what you need.
@@NGPlusVideos sorry for the late reply, but thanks a bunch for answering my question! I'll definitely have to check out that site, might be a big help for me. Thank you!
Croc Legend of the Gobbos, I never thought I would see a speedrun about it, much less a challenge run of it, this woke up so many good memories of this game, and the memories and music it gave me.
You earned your sub, Mister, enjoy it. And I hope to see an Alundra run from you at a point, would feel like the game for you!
Has anyone ever told you that you sound like a combination of Richard Ayoade and Robert Webb? This is a good thing btw! Love the content too 🤟
I am starting to hear this more than usual ha ha. Better than the usual Mr Bean comparison. Thank you :)
Can you do a challenge for Croc 2? I never had or played Croc, we only had Croc 2.
Haha wow you made me break out my actual disc after watching this.
Now we wait until Croc low% speedruns become a thing >:)
is it possible to go through the door pause within the animation then save and quit and come back and then it may drop u within the room?
Croc is a proper throwback
i think such a challenge should not include "forced collection"
If the game physically prevents you from NOT collecting it, 'you didnt collect it, the game gave it to you' imo
7:00 nice randy savage impersonation
Glad someone caught that!
Now this, this was my childhood
Croc was my first first game. This was an instant click
I remember this Instant Classic!!! :D :D :D
If playing on an emulator for this challenge, are you allowed to use save states?
I'd say so, if the aim is simply to find out if the challenge is possible or not
Very cool, gg mate
Thanks, expect more of these kinda vids soon 😀
Ah yes. My favorite classic platformer, Croc: Legend, and my favorite run category, 0%.
I'm somewhat disappointed that you didn't go down the rabbit hole of finding a way to get out of bounds and skip the door as a whole to skip that crystal. But it is still a nice video!
These videos are awesome man make more
Got a 6th video on the way, but it's a big one, so it could take some time. Hopefully in time for the new year. Thanks a lot 😁
@@NGPlusVideos thanks for the content mate merry Xmas
So only just watched this now, but i think we are asking the wrong question. The walk animation isn’t the enemy, the crystal is. The question we should be asking is can we dodge that crystal? I want to know if there are any out or bounds shenanigans that can skip the transition onto the crystal
Finally some good fucking food.
For a second i thought the video has obvious answer that you can sinxe theres no requiremwnts for levels
But..
Then i realised you have to avoid it too
Okay did you get the box switching game wrong on purpose? I went back n watched, it ain't in the left box as you say lol
Croc 2 when
"Do you remember Croc: Legend of the Gobbos"
Ummm...no, actually. Never played it...
HOW do you have the patience to do this? I mean, seriously, great video, but I just don't see HOW you have the patience at all lol
Thank you, but I find it crazy that you ask how I have enough patience to do this challenge when the next video nearly broke my brain in half! 🥴
@@NGPlusVideos Ah but you still did it anyway! So that proves you had the patience, even if it was a close call lol
This was the first video game I ever played.
Is croc 2 impossible to beat without collecting and crystals or gobbos?
"there are only 2 types of gobbos: bad gobbos, and dead gobbos"
You are underrated as hell
Thank you very much, but I do only have two videos out right now, so I understand that very few will have found this channel yet. But I definitely have ideas for more videos to come 😁
@@NGPlusVideos I have no doubt you'll blow up eventually! Both of your videos are very high quality
Crystals, no, but just Gobbos, yes.
Going to be 100% honest...I never beat this game all the way through more than 1 time. I used passwords...but man do I love this game
Game was hard af.
how many levels are in this game?
I like Croc 1 and 2
Is this really completing the game though? You need to collect all the jigsaw pieces (by collecting all the gobbos) to unlock the last island. After *that* boss is when the credits play and a game is considered "beaten". Beating Baron Dante in the mansion island is just as far as you can get without collecting anything.
It is because it is an ending.
Otherwise the question would be just silly, like "Can you 100% Crash Bandicoot without collecting any Gems?" or "Can you 100% Super Mario 64 without collecting any Stars?"
No. The answer is obviously no.
Omg you’re so underrated
Thank you, I'm basically only just getting started with these videos, so I don't expect loads of subs or anything yet. Your comments are super motivating though :D
@@NGPlusVideos thanks i hope to see your channel get more subs
This game is the Nightmare of my Childhood, i got so mad while playing this game because of camera angle, clunky controlls, and this gam ewas way to hard for me etc. I hate u CROC
Poor Croc, he tried his best 😅
@@NGPlusVideos maybe its like vine, u need to get older to enjoy it xD
Please remaster
please remaster
please remaster
I've been playing this game for 20 years, and you're telling me that all that platforming was OPTIONAL?!?
Which platforming are you referring to? The Gobbo rescuing? Thanks for watching btw 😁
@@NGPlusVideos I meant the whole Hover Jump thing
Ah yes, that little bug has been there since day one. You could try it out yourself one day :)
@@NGPlusVideos If I ever find the disc.
Moved house almost two years ago, still haven't finished unpacking.
Ah gotcha, I still have a bunch of PS2 games in the attic somewhere
So there is no way to hover jump through a door/ into another room, then?
You can but you won't hover out the other side
@@NGPlusVideos Dang. So no matter how you approach the door, it goes into Croc's automatic walk animation once you pass the entrance? Ugh. We'd need some kind of wall clip then. ;_;
I'm not sure the game loads all the areas at once either. It seems the door acts as a loading screen too
@@NGPlusVideos oh DIP so there's no way into the next room? clipping out of bounds wouldn't let you get to the next area, huh? i dont even know why im asking, it sounds like MANY people have already been at this problem for a while ;__;
Wish this would get a remake
Can you do a pacifist run without collecting gobbos? Crystals are fine...
are you going to do this in Croc 2?
I'm not sure, there are some quests that simply just award you crystals ai believe, so maybe that would need a different kind of challenge instead. Just not sure what yet
AKA Low%?
Essentially yes
So... wouldn't this just be Low%, since you're collecting the bare minimum?
Essentially yes
So this is a low% run, then?
Seems so
Yo no way😮
