- Sir John Hurt reads Peter Capaldi's Anti War Speech from Zygon Inversion
Recorded at Gallifrey One on February 14, 2016 in Los Angeles, California.
I'd give real money to hear Christopher Eccleston deliver this speech.
It would be amazzing to have all of them, Ecclestone to Capaldi, do it all in succession, so one can see the differences in their doctors
Now that would be interesting
the ultimate speech, the experience of the doctor, from first to last
I think they should get every living Doctor, old and new series, to do this and a few other memorable quotes of similar pathos.
Pete Walsh did a fantastic impression of Nine doing it - just search it up.
If he had a day to rehearse this, he would have CRUSHED it. He would have brought his Chancellor Sutler rage to bare.

No doubt. I think fans often forget that actors don't know every episode by heart (sometimes they don't even watch their own work), and so they make unreasonable requests like this. The dude just hands him a speech he's obviously never heard, with no context or background, on stage in front of a live audience and asks him to read it. And that's what he did - nothing more, nothing less. I personally thought he was awful, but that's okay - in this scenario, it was impossible to be good.
Omg i never realized he was Sutler.
Hes always been The Doctor to me lol.
Damn, it takes a really good actor yo be able to play both Alternate British hitler, and the doctor lol
He was amazing but peter Capaldi here was so amazing...
His voice is still perfect for the speech
The way he says _"Sit down!"_ like he's scolding a child is the most perfect War Doctor line read.
One of the greats, and of the best Who's.
john hurt's voice is amazing.
Aidan The Dwarf *was
Andrei Louis yep
Andrei Louis wait wait when the fuck did he die fuck first 2016 now 2017 the fuck
he died the 25th of January 2017 R.I.P
Aidan The Dwarf Awesome actor, one of my favorite doctors
Rest in peace, John. You were fantastic, absolutely fantastic.
If he'd had time to practice that, take it a little slower and really gravel out the deep emotion of it, and the right atmosphere behind it, that would have been very powerful.
The fact his delivery is still awesome even without the practice just shows you how sublime an actor he really was. I miss him so much... :(
hagamapama don't forget the right music!!! (And I completely agree)
hagamapama and an added "no more" at the end!!!
hagamapama
In short: he butchered a great speech.
Or he doesn't watch the show and didn't have the proper context. He was handed a piece and paper and told "Read this"
I actually really like this version because it’s almost like the war doctor hasn’t quite registered the pain and anger yet and it’s in this limbo of wisdom from his one huge regret in the time war
Exactly!
We seriously need some more War Doctor. Even as a cold read that was a fantastic performance :).
You might want to check out Big Finish Audio. Sir John has worked a few time with them on War Doctor audio plays. The 4th one will be coming out soon and will pair him up with Louise Jameson.

I agree. It would be great to see more of the War Doctor (not just hear him, though I would expect the audio dramas to be quite good). He instantly became my favorite Doctor yet and we've seen so little of him!
Devin Morales feelsbadman
Lydia Tarine rip John Hurt...
I'm not sure why you felt the need to single me out where this is concerned, and not the person who started this comment chain, but I am already aware that Sir John Hurt died on 1-25-17. The comment, and all those above it in the chain, were posted _before_ he died. RUclips will list those comments as being posted "1 month ago" for days to weeks because after a point the time shown is a rough estimate. Just a little tidbit for your future reference since I doubt you intend to make people feel insulted.
When John Hurt died, we lost one of the greatest actors, people and voices ever. Rest in piece.
We need to get Matt Smith, Ecclestone and Tennant to read this ! Tom Baker also !
Oh goodness, Tennant reading it would kill me. Say what you will, the man is very good at the Doctor at his most emotional.
Why not also Davison, Baker, McCoy and McGann?
tennant is gonna be at alamo city comic con and i got vip i definitely plan on asking him to do it
Please see if you can get someone to record it !
First thing Eccleston needs to read is "I will always remember when the Doctor was me". THEN this.
This was his first reading.... Wow, imagine this with a few minutes practise... Unfortunately that will never happen though. Poor John Hurt.
Capaldi did it on first take too,his version was just amazing...
@@vedantkadian9684 on his first take.not without rehearsal. Not the same thing
Godspeed, John Hurt. You are among the stars now.
I love how quickly he falls into the role. His voice shifts and changes and John Hurt is just suddenly gone, and the War Doctor is there.
Goodbye Doctor we will always remember when the Doctor was you. Fly in to the sunset Great Dragon we will fight for Avalon in your name. Ollivander thanks for helping us find our wands and awaking the Magic in everyone.
He was Ollivander? I didn't know that!
He was also The Storyteller in the Jim Hendon series of the same name. I think that's why I took to him as the voice of The Dragon. Somewhere in my subconscious, I knew his voice from when I was a really wee kid. I just didny know his name at the time. I'm glad I watched The Storyteller. Since that vague memory drew me in to watching Merlin, and it made me adore The War Doctor.
THAT was beautiful!
RIP John Hurt 1940-2017
Jesus Rodríguez 77 yrs :(
RIP JOHN HURT
You were the doctor when there was no way to get it right, you were the best doctor
RIP Sir John Hurt, an amazing man and an acting legend
If only ISIS and the Nazis had heard this - but they probably wouldn't have listened.
If only people in the future will listen - but they probably won't.
Every war is the same. Men and women join the military, most hoping to make their country safer, only for a politician somewhere to start a war, and drag them into it.
People change, and do the unspeakable. Children cry out in fear. The innocent and the guilty suffer alike. All because someone, somewhere, couldn't compromise.
And these days, the wars seem without end. How much longer will the bloodshed in the Middle East last? A decade? A century? More? All because some people want the world to fit their ideal. Because they can't see the beauty in front of them.
Hence the 15 times.
That speec hworks both ways. A war requires two parties
In that case... I suppose is our responsability to remeber it and make the other listen it, Peter and John had given to us this marvelous tools of peace
America needs to hear it too - because if you answer war with war; you only continue it. You refine it. You extend it.
And then it never ends.
See, here's the thing, ISIS and the terrorists of this modern age aren't going to war to conquer or enslave - they believe their families are in danger. Their country. Their way of life. They believe that America and the UN and the whole of Europe is willing to invade their country(s) to take their resources - because countries have been doing that since before Operation Desert Storm and, in fact, as far back as the Roman Empire.
Then there's areas like Guantanamo and the Muslim ban and the behavior of most of the western world towards their people... simply put - we don't exactly HAVE a good reputation with these people. Every time we kill more of them - or hunt down more of them - we only reaffirm their stance that we are villains. Even worse, our continued occupation of areas like Syria, Iran and Iraq only justifies what they do... and drive others to support them.
Does that excuse them blowing up school buses and restaurants? Hardly. But peace is a two way street - you can't scream at others for not seeking peace when you don't seek it yourself.
John was great! Usually, I find when an old Doctor is asked to read a present Doctor's speech, he doesn't do it quite right. John Hurt did it differently, but he made it all his own. His voice oozes anger, pain, and righteous indignation. Well done!
Rip sir John hurt he was my favorite actor and when I heard of his untimely end I cried.
You were a great man John you were like a god to me
Your sincerely
Raspberry humanity
I can see where the 12th Doctor is coming from and I was expecting him to say "No More!" when he talked about the Time War and channeled his former War Doctor incarnation.
I watched this, and about halfway through thinking "what an amazing actor", I remembered that we no longer have him in our lives :'( RIP John Hurt, you were incredible.
I wish our world leaders and everyone in this world would take heed of this speech
Man... John hurt... man could've used more of him in Doctor Who... this is incredible for a first read.
Very well delivered, R,I,P John Hurt.
I love him. I was there at that convention (I went just for him). I missed seeing this, but I got a photo with him and I will treasure it forever. What a talent. And he was so nice! Sadly, he passed away the following year...R.I.P. sir, and thank you for all the wonderful films!
Brilliantly done, imagine if he'd rehearsed a bit before doing it, it would have been absolutely incredible. Capaldi did it brilliant in episode but Hurt's voice, his timbre and pitch (as well as the fact he was the War Doctor) suit this type of speech.
Am I the only one would have loved to the hear him say "No more" instead of "Not on my watch"?
Can this guy get any damn cooler ! Peter did his better but he was able to practice that. John just did it in one go and it was awesome
Damn. Little did we know that in less than a year of this recording he'd be gone. RIP John Hurt.
RIP John :( you were amazing
I wonder if Doctors get uncomfortable when they are asked to read other Doctors speeches. Regardless, Sir Hurt puts on a fantastic performance here. He will be missed.
Sir John was and is a wonderful actor, and he was a perfect choice for the War Doctor. Forever alive in our memories.
Capaldi’s original scene makes me tear up, every time. This split my heart, right down the middle. RIP John
wow I can hear the dragon from Merlin in that speech ...he still sounds the same
Wow, he felt that. Fantastic rendition!
RIP War Doctor
Its so weird~ AFTER I learned of his passing? I found this and I thought~ "Wow~ The voice from beyond the grave."
oh my goodness, I teared up watching this, I love how he got more and more into it as he read threw it, R.I.P. Mr Hurt
I wish I had a voice like John Hurt.
The difference in tone and delivery is fascinating to watch here. Hurt gives the monologue this solemn, haunted character to the words, delivering it more like a regretful cautionary warning one might deliver on a deathbed.
Capaldi on the other hand had a much more explosive take on it, delivering it with an almost parental fury, displaying anger and disappointment, but also hints of himself being upset at the discussion. It's like he's scalding his child for nearly killing someone in a car wreck, but being glad they're ok and safe. Both actors absolutely smash this scene, and both are equally as valid as the last.
It still hurts that he's gone, even if his death wasn't the most shocking.... Rest In Peace, doctor, dictator, marine..... Rest In Peace.
RIP legendary actor and amazing person
Hearing this crushed me and i did not realize it's been close to 7 years since John Hurt passed...
I think I need to go lay down for a few moments...
I feel like the speech, in general, right when he says "not under my watch" deserved a call back like, "NOT under my watch. no. more." or something.
we really should have gotten a full season of the war doctor
Dam I always pictured John Hurt doing this in that scene I didn't know this existed and I was not let down
I miss him. I wish he could return for more
He indeed was one of those read-the-phonebook-and-hold-an-audience's-attention kind of actor!
He had that doctor who presents that not many people had quite as well. He really was truly amazing as the doctor and and his massive array of other roles. He will be loved and missed by me and so many other people. He just had a natural talent of acting there are no words to describe how amazing he was. RIP SIR JOHN HURT
It's nice to add John Hurt to the list of actors who've read speeches from other Doctors.
By the way, McCoy's Pandorica Speech was way better than Matt Smith's version.
good on you John hurt 10/10
The Universe is dimmer without you, Sir John. Thanks for everything.
Holy Hannah. Blind reading, different direction, but you can FEEL the moment when the crowd shuts up, and he's got them. Legend.
i love how silence came around when he started to speak
I love John hurt so much, I cried when I heard
Yes! This is fabulous!
RIP John Hurt. Very good reading as well especially cuz he read it off paper.
I have met , worked on few films with John , love him always and forever RIP
Rest in peace to a legend beyond legends.
What a great doctor.
Actually, if you watch this video: ruclips.net/video/6sMgwIUECSs/видео.html , you will find Peter himself doing a calmer version of this speech. When the crew talked about this scene, they said Peter did at least three version. (God how I wish they had released all of them!)
Oh my God, so glad he was able to read this! R.I.P. my good Sir. You shall always be able be missed.
My god John Hurt was awesome! There will never be another one like him.
I think the scariest thing about this doctor is that he says all this much more matter of factly than 12 ever could
i didn't know he'd be u for reading dr who monologues. i hope he does more because he has one of the best voices ever.
RIP John Hurt
Alejandro Molina amen
Thanks for this video.
RIP John Hurt. you may be gone from this world ,but we shall meet with you in another world in near future . A wonderful man with pure and utter Grace with everything that he did. He portrayed such a class act in everything that he did and said ,whilst bringing true thought and emotion in every role that he played. John Hurt was one of a kind ,a special actor . We don't get them like this anymore. A pure spark of genius and wonder has been lost from this world ,but it has appeared in the another for whom we shall too be joining very very soon. RIP John Hurt, you were pure perfection
I believe that being The Doctor (not figuratively like an actor portraying the character, but literally) could be compared to what it's like to have systs or tumors removed from your body: Excruciatingly painful and something which absolutely MUST happen, but ends with such relief it can only be described as cathartic.
In another seemingly incongruous way (that whether you believe me or not, came to me mere moments ago after I began typing this comment) which somehow, impossibly, even if only for myself, makes perfect sense...
Hurt that heals.
I love John Hurt.
I love how we have a War Doctor, such a great addition to the Doctor Who universe
I don't care if he didn't have time to rehearse it, it still left me even more heartbroken over him.
I always wanted to meet this man. I first watched him in Harry Potter then Merlin and was so excited when it was announced he'd be in Doctor Who. Sad loss to The Who world but he'll live on though his performances that I'm sure generations to come will enjoy
God I miss , Sir John Hurt 😭 This world is a far colder place without him 💔 Good night , Sweet Prince , and may Angels sing thee to thy rest 🙏✝️🙏
I wish there was a version of John Hurt reading the Pandorica speech
It's not just practice with the text that made Capaldi's version so much better. He had directions too. The gap between the two versions is the limitation of the actor alone, without a good director to help him grasp what the scene was meant to convey. As brilliant the actors are, never forget that Doctor Who is a whole team.
this gave me chills....
Rest in piece Doctor Hurt. You shall be missed.
One of the great mysteries of the universe explained. Daleks never stop fighting because they can't sit down.
Some folks think that John Hurt is dead. We who are familiar with his work know that he shall live forever.
This makes me so nostalgic and sad
Breaks my heart 💔
Alien...The Elephant Man...1984...Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy...The Naked Civil Servant...Midnight Express...10 Rillington Place...Night Crossing...Heaven's Gate....and the War Doctor. What a legacy, to name but a few highlights. A legend, an actor whose restraint and mournful solemnity spoke volumes without him saying a word. RIP and thank you, Sir John Hurt.
Everyone saying...if he had time to rehearse. I love the way he delivered it. As the war doctor, it would’ve been said like that. Analytical rather than emotional. He was still in it, and he was watching the war. RIP JH.
a great man who will live forever in the hearts (both of them) of millions
I miss him so much
we all miss him. R.I.P John Hurt his role as the doctor will be remembered as the true saviour of Gallifrey
Hearing his voice literally only makes me picture the dragon from merlin😂😂😂
If John Hurt was practiced this it would be a great but this is just nice. But voice is really fits. It could be really great.
He did this..... John.... well done
Sir John Hurt, you are forever will be remembered
I really want to see that again after he reads it through more and has more time to decide on how he wants to emphasize it
He feels so much like a classic who doctor I love it
This has become something of a tradition.
Would have loved to have heard this, after he had time to think about it.
johnn hurt read this so well its just his voice
RIP my doctor
Holy shit. Like, I know it was a cold reading, but DAMN that was INTENSE. Sir John Hurt, you are a magnificent talent, a man of renown and respect, and you are well missed.
Oh wow, having a Whovian moment here 🥲🥲🥲Rest in peace, our warrior
This is absolutely amazing. I just wish he had time to rehearse this so he could get the "eyes" part with a little more passion. From what I've seen I still think Capaldi's is the best version then War Doctor... then 9th, last but not least the version I've seen of 10th. I'd like to see Jodie pull this off too...
still thank you Sir John Hurt, this was phenomenal.
Goosebumps
