Great documentary! One finicky thing. Unlike B.C., C.E., or B.C.E, the correct usage of “A.D.” technically places the abbreviation before the year in question (E.g. A.D. 425). This is due to its Latin construction. Most people get this wrong. And one might argue that common usage dictates a language. But you seem like the kind of gent who appreciates accuracy in the details. Again, great video-very informative!
@Stefan Dubois The Normans never left and England was never reclaimed. Probably why it's as it is now..i.e. over crowded and run like a business with no devolved government.
This was excellent. I learned a lot about my country, thank you. Essentially constant battles (wr mostly lost) and childless king after childless king leading to almost constant instability
Braveheart was soooo historically inaccurate, battles happened but Robert de Bruce did not betray him! Highly unlikely he even fought beside him due to age difference nor did he impregnate Isabella with Edward iii. The truth is much more interesting! Hollywood 🙄
@@lyndsaycrawford i would maybe draw peoples attention to Mel Gibson as the main problem with braveheart. The one thing we know is the title of the film is misleading. These are the kind of details I wonder endlessly about when it comes to historic topics - how kingdoms formed and ended, what came before and in between, etc. They say I'm weird, but I almost exclusively watch and read historic things (with a little science sprinkled in) but somehow, I still learn new things every day. I mean, I know some about Scotland and England's history (very fascinating to me) but I still get certain tribes, groups and kingdoms mixed up and who came first and after, etc - basically, exactly the things you are clarifying here. I recently found out through ancestry research that I'm almost entirely Scottish - my surname, literally my screen name here (minus the numbers), is directly from Scotland - Blalack = Blacklocke. This, after thinking I was German my entire life - so Scotland is extra interesting to me now. Also, wasn't Columba supposedly the first person to record seeing the Loch Ness monster?
A Campbell here. An American, still trying to find how far removed. But know how well known the clan is across the pond. Very interesting video. As I'm always searching for videos on ancient Scotland or more personal historical research. But again. Very well done.
A good read is the book, how Scotland invented the modern world. We have a very ancient and interesting history, however as a Scot even I was surprised at just how much this tiny country of ours contributed to the development of modern society.
Recently got around to properly tracing my genetics and story and found out I'm around ⅓ Scottish (the rest being Welsh/swedish/Anglo-Saxon). That's especially amazing since I'm at least 6th generation in America. Seems like the Scotts stuck together enough to give birth to very Scottish looking me. Happy to learn about the history of my ancestors and their land.
My quest for knowledge on the history of the world has brought me here. After watching the other videos on the British Isles, I look forward to this video, and I am excited to move on to other parts of the world. I have an entire playlist of your videos ready to watch.

Thank you for this high quality content! F.O.L- you guys deserve to blow up as a channel :) please keep the history flowing
Was excited to see this new one when I got to work this morning. Now I have to stay late to make up the hour. Very worth it. Thank you.
Loved it. I'm descended from some of the people you mentioned. Thank you for putting together such an excellent documentary
Who?
I love watching these videos, so fascinating. Thank you for doing my home country of Scotland.
Genetically I am a quarter Scottish and I wish my family and their family before them held on to our Scottish roots and history. It makes me sad how much history is just lost to time.
Amazing video about my native country!! I live in the Kingdom of Strathclyde 🏴
Scotland has such an amazing history!
Considering you had under an hour this is excellent, thank you for sharing.
Will there be a part II? The Scottish Reformation, the clan system, and the Scottish Enlightenment especially deserve spotlighting!
This is a pretty decent history of early Scotland. Well researched, clear and concise presentation.
This is great! I would like to see wales now, keep up the amazing work!
Woohoo! I was waiting for this one! Thank you!
I’m South African and proud to be a Scottish descendant but wish I could know more about our ancestors
There’s a couple of South Africans of Scottish descent playing for the Scottish rugby team .
Loved this. Have deep Scottish roots in my blood. My great grandfather came to USA in 1925. I am only 3rd generation to be here in America. I have traced my family tree back to 1750s so far. Still researching more.

"... and sent him homeward tae think again."
@Stefan Dubois The Normans never left and England was never reclaimed. Probably why it's as it is now..i.e. over crowded and run like a business with no devolved government.
And he did and didn,t half kick their ass.

This was excellent. I learned a lot about my country, thank you. Essentially constant battles (wr mostly lost) and childless king after childless king leading to almost constant instability
Me this entire video: SCOTLAND FOREVEEEER!
Justin: Please, do not take the movie Braveheart as real history
Me: :(
Braveheart = Historical Documentary
Brave heart the biggest load of bullshit the real story much much better and makes the scottish look so much stronger and smarter
Which video did you watch?
Braveheart was soooo historically inaccurate, battles happened but Robert de Bruce did not betray him! Highly unlikely he even fought beside him due to age difference nor did he impregnate Isabella with Edward iii. The truth is much more interesting! Hollywood 🙄
@@lyndsaycrawford i would maybe draw peoples attention to Mel Gibson as the main problem with braveheart. The one thing we know is the title of the film is misleading. The brave heart is the one of robert the bruce taken , some of the way on crusade. When i mentioned mel gibson i should have made my idea more clear. He and his father are staunch Catholics. The English after especially after Henry the v111 went against the papacy. I just saw this and his film the Patriot as an anti english protest. If you watch the one about the south Americans its like they will be civilized by the spanish catholic ships just off shore at the end. No history here just a (maybe) imagined agenda.
I'm a two generations removed Macgregor, a Child of the Mist...I love being a Scottish woman and so proud to be Scottish...

An hour of my life well spent, thoroughly enjoyed that
I’m Cornish and I enjoyed this documentary. Best wishes to our distant cousins in the far north.
Me too, I live in Scotland, barely anyone up here even knows about Cornwall and just lumps us in with 'English' it bothers me
@@2sik_UK Silly things bother you then!
The Cornish are much closer to the Devonshire English than they are to Welsh or Scottish...view the Oxford University study.
Absolutely brilliant mate like all of your videos, I can’t wait for part 2
Well done, with such a complicated history , to say the least, this was a great video.
Currently living in England... but you can't beat the Scottish! Great people, huge heart!
I'm Scottish im from Edinburgh really enjoyed this :)
just a wee note for anybody interested! in gàidhlig, alba is pronounced ‘ah-luh-puh’
A Campbell here. An American, still trying to find how far removed. But know how well known the clan is across the pond. Very interesting video. As I'm always searching for videos on ancient Scotland or more personal historical research. But again. Very well done.
Here after bingeing Outlander
Saaaammmeee!! 😉
Same, and I do have some Scottish blood behind me. I would like to visit one day.
Lol saaaame
Ridiculous show.
Same and my first girlfriend's father was from Scotland a Fraser!
Thanks for your channel. We all appreciate it.
A good read is the book, how Scotland invented the modern world. We have a very ancient and interesting history, however as a Scot even I was surprised at just how much this tiny country of ours contributed to the development of modern society.
FINALLY SOMEONE I HAVE FOUND MADE THIS!
I’m scottish btw so I love to see what my ancestors went through
Scottish and proud 🏴
Thank you for sharing your experience with us all
A beautiful history of a beautiful country--God bless & much respect, Scotland!

I am so proud of my country of birth, and so very homesick.
My quest for knowledge on the history of the world has brought me here. After watching the other videos on the British Isles, I look forward to this video, and I am excited to move on to other parts of the world. I have an entire playlist of your videos ready to watch.
As a red-headed Irish American, I totally loved this documentary-artwork and all 👍
You are American not Irish!
@@marypetrie930 Tell me you've never heard of the term "diaspora" without telling me you've never heard of the term "diaspora"
@@marypetrie930 it’s none of your business how this man identifies himself. He’s proud of his Irish heritage & I say good on you pal 👍🏼🏴
@@marypetrie930that's why the person said "Irish American" and not "Irish". This is the terminology we use in the US to reflect where our ancestors came from since most of the country is settled by foreigners.
I'm preparing for my higher history exam, and the key topic is the first war of independence, but I greatly appreciate this video for providing great context!
Big fan of your channel. Thank you. Would love to see a documentary on the history of the Soviet Empire.
this was so much more than i was expecting- awesome video!
As a Scot, I can imagine one person in any conflict where Scots are involved would yell "FUCKING MON THEN!" and charge in.
Aye 😂 you just hear someone in the background screaming “square go!”
Fair fight fair fight
_Ah luv that phrase mate. No said it for a while. We have total resistance in our blood, if it spills, it falls as tartan on the ground.Century's of resistance have woven it throughout every

Cheers. 🏴👍🏻👍🏻🏴_
Learning of my heritage is awesome..thanks so much
I love your documentaries. Would you consider doing a documentary on the Netherlands and the Dutch language. Keep the awesome content up ;)
I'm from a place called Largs and watching for my history class, Alot of interesting history in our country like the viking tombs that were found buried while Glasgow Airport was being built and also how the nordic vikings invaded Scotland in my very town Largs and we beat them. Theres now a giant Viking statue here on the front. Thank you for covering more of our History

Love you to do a video of Wales. True ancient Britons.
Just found out I’m 52% Scottish through DNA testing. I was quite surprised; I knew I was Irish, but never Scottish. Turns out many of my relatives way back really were Scottish. Now I want to learn about ancestral home as much as possible! Great documentary!
It means your ancestors were probably from Ulster. Out of curiosity what is your remaining ancestry?
@@noahtylerpritchett2682 : Yes, that’s exactly right! The rest of my ancestry is pretty predictable: English, German, Norwegian, and a little bit of French. Thank you for asking!
@@chynnadoll3277 English could be lowlanders having Angle ancestry from Northumbria.
Norway could be Norse-Gaelic or Norman. And if French. More likely Norman. No idea about German.
I could of course be entirely wrong it's your ancestry and your family tree so you might know stuff I could be wrong of. So this is my assumption case scenario.

I just done a my heritage dna : 83% Irish Scottish Welsh my gran did come here from Ireland not sure which part & they were Catholic though. I’ve thousands of relatives out there mostly in the Uk, Ireland, America, Canada & Australia & parts of Europe.
