My P2 seems to have been on order for ever. Now, seeing it in the flesh - well, video - I'm looking forward to it more than ever. Teak coaches are waiting! Tony.
I got one same as your, beautiful and powerful. I brought P2 dcc ready 82 pounds brand new from the Amazon also I’m fitted dcc sound 42 pound. Running like real life without problems. Yes recommend it 👍🏼
Been waiting for an RTR P2 all my life. Gresley's masterpiece in many respects (although few firemen would agree!). Absolutely magnificent in every respect...
Persuaded my Dad to get one (a TTS version at approx 135pounds) and he is extremely happy. Whats more he can operate it on his Dcc only line easily, due to the wheel arrangement of 2-8-2being easier to put on his track than a Pacific.
when I saw 23 coaches I laughed ! - thats a massively impressive loco - I really do like your BR one (as I remember BR) - its a beautiful looking model whereas the P2 looks strange to me - even weird - great videoing of the locos - great video - thanks
I think Hornby should be congratulated on producing this model as the prototype only existed in this form for such as small time, as you have pointed out. So I suspect it will have a limited market, unless you model the ECML, Scottish section where they spend a fair amount of their short time, but huge appeal all the same, splendid!
Sad that the P2 did not survive irl but even in model form it shows the power of a mikado but as a passenger engine. The p2 had a chance if it was made so the pilot and trailing can pivot and had freight drivers. She would be the strongest locomotive to be in both freight and passenger even when most mikados would be replaced by Berkshire and northerns, p2s would still be around.
There is a new p2 been built by the a1 trust that built tornado the peppercorn a1. Its going to be called prince if Wales. She's going to look magnificent.
Very impressive demonstration and a good quality review. The valve gear looks esquisite. The problem with RTR plastic steam locomotives is that they look like plastic, especially in LNER Green. To my eyes, the DJH Pacific looked more realistic.
I'm sure this can pull even more. I have a smokey Joe on my outdoor railway and because of the very well used slightly corroded but not rusty wheels it can pull 10 full size coaches that live outside on a permanent basis non of these are gliders as they have covered thousands of KM in their time.
The track is not Peco. It is handbuilt from C&L components for turnouts and C&L flexi-track.I think the joins are made with scale fishplates not rail joiners.
At the minute my P2 C.O.C.K O THE NORTH is in Doncaster works ( TAG MODELS) having a new 5 pole screw motor X9108 fitted .The original 3 pole screw motor would not pull the skin off a rice pudding.

Works very well on this super high standard trackwork. Such a high standard that even Tony Wright had someone much more skilled at trackwork construct the track. The average buyer using Hornby set track tight curves and points might not get such good results.
Did Mr. Thompson have any choice about rebuilding the P2s, given there was a war taking place at the time? Granted the conversion could have been done better, but I sense there was something inevitable about it. The P2 loco looks "A1" in model form.
***** From what I have read in an interview he gave to O.S. Nock, I think the term "hatred of Gresley designs" is an exaggeration. It was, after all, Gresley designed components that he used in his scheme of standardisation: eg B17 boiler for the B1. He also called in an outside and independent judge to inspect the conjugated valve gear used on 3 cylinder locos.
I used to have Hornby (Hornby-Dublo) when I was a youngster, many moons ago! I never remember them having the strangely flat paint appearance of the new ones today. To me every new Hornby has a strange paint job and not as realistic as the older ones. No doubt they operate well and many people like them. The other locomotive, the Pacific, looks a lot better, but is not as powerful.
Hi tony. I just happened on this vid today here in a Starvebux cawffee (I'm from New Yawk City) in Los Angeles. I keep wondering why Hornby and ( is it ?) Graham Farrish don't go into making American prototype engines imported to US train stores ..This P2 loco seems outstanding in its drive-train mechanism quality ; smoooooth !! Anyone ? ...M
Actual;y, the LNER used Cartazzi types, which were fixed (the axle swung, but the outside frames were fixed), so it's much more accurate than a swinging type for this loco.
LateNeverEarlyR As pointed out to me fine for the LNER loco that were built like that but the decent models that had proper trailing bogies like the Princess and Duchess it sure looks much better.
Tony Wright uses either older Hornby Pullmans modified or kit built Pullmans. He may have some Lighted Pullmans, but generally these are not ECML prototypical.
I hope hornby makes one with a second tender like the Flying Scotsman the A1/A3 and the A4 Bittern. Edit: Also is it true that the P2 is stronger than the 9F?
Nice looking model but front bogie far too light. Mine derails on points, crossovers and with slightest provocation. I really wanted this model but now I have it, rarely run it.
Yes loco drive. All Hornby models produced for about the past twenty years of new tooling have gone back to loco drive. A new tooling of this locomotive and the versions with an A4 type nose have been announced by Hornby for release this year. Search Hornby P2 on RUclips for recent news.
Beautiful model, but,I bet that Pacific has the power to pull those coach's, just not the traction. I bet a couple of rubber traction tire's would do the trick.
Currently you will have to wait as the locomotive is still being made and is due in September but we don't have long Check Ehattons or Hornby as they make the item
Just WOW! What a beast! Great to see the model actually stands up to the real thing in power!

What a beauty. Perfect condition. Strong train. A complete beast. 🙂

great review Tony nice to see U back, look forward to future issues of your videos with brm....
This is kind of accurate since the P2s in their original state were powerful machines before rebuild
P2s are really stunning! Beautiful runner.

Great, lovely looking model! Cheers, Jack

To be fair, the model of the "ungainly pacific" looks rather good
jimik89 get out...
Actually I have to agree with you. Now of course we don't much like Thomson but as far as models go it's pretty good
What they did around the funnel was kind of cool looking, BUT THE CYLINDERS ARE SO CLOSE TO THE DRIVING WHEELS, IT JUST LOOKS WRONG
Really cant wait for this!
On the number of coaches front, I managed to pull 28 with a Hornby B17.
this is probably the first youtube video i watched and its still good
I might have to put together a European model if I stay on these for any time at all :) Makin it look good! Thanks!

when i go to the website of hornby, they say that even the railroad models aren't on the shelfs anymore...
Go to Mad about Trains in Gainsborough they have both
FS-ask at the Aylsham Bure Valley Railway shop (01263 733858), cos they still had a TTS version a few weeks ago. Worth a try

The P2 is a beautiful child. The A2/2 is it, in about a decade or so, due to puberty.
Puberty that made it uglier AND weaker?
@@mitchellhogg4627 that’s what Puberty can do to some people, sadly.

Mark Harris is
Mine's appalling. It sticks like hell in speed steps 2-4.
Wow nice train model
23 cars is amazing!
Remember that the British record for carriages hauled by a single locomotive is held by a V2 that managed to haul 26 out of The Cross during the war…
That is impressive, given the grade and the tunnel.
Ken - it was 4800 in March 1940…
LateNeverEarlyR Technically Pullman's are always (and only) referred to as cars in the UK. So Tony is correct...
Also, if you need any L N E R coaches, I recommend L N E R teak composite coaches
50GBP x 23 coaches = 1150.00 GBP. Hey, no problem!
When will they go back to a proper trailing truck those fixed ones just dont look right
Actual;y, the LNER used Cartazzi types, which were fixed (the axle swung, but the outside frames were fixed), so it's much more accurate than a swinging type for this loco.
LateNeverEarlyR As pointed out to me fine for the LNER loco that were built like that but the decent models that had proper trailing bogies like the Princess and Duchess it sure looks much better.
Keith Bacon
Absolutely - for those locos which had pivoting systems it's much more prototypical.
no they don't
LateNeverEarlyR You are wrong, it makes the engines look awful!
Hi in the video the P2 was pulling some pullman coaches do the pullman coaches have lights in them?
Tony Wright uses either older Hornby Pullmans modified or kit built Pullmans. He may have some Lighted Pullmans, but generally these are not ECML prototypical.
Could you please tell me what track that is as I cant see any connections and Also did you weather the track ,what a great set up..thanks ...Alan
He probably used Peco but maybe soldered the track together
Flexi track with standard fish with track connectors possibly
Hello. When is the P2 going to be released/available?
I hope hornby makes one with a second tender like the Flying Scotsman the A1/A3 and the A4 Bittern.
Edit: Also is it true that the P2 is stronger than the 9F?
It is stronger. The duchess pacifics and the gwr kings are stronger than a 9f
What music is that playing?
Kanefan70
Nice looking model but front bogie far too light. Mine derails on points, crossovers and with slightest provocation. I really wanted this model but now I have it, rarely run it.
Yes, The Hornby K1 has the same issue. As soon as you hit points, off it goes!
I solved that problem on mine by sticking a button-cell battery on the front truck over the axle, you don't see it and it works!!
what i do is be VERY careful of the points
Tiny fishing leads glued to the underside of the boogie to weigh it down
El color verde les sienta muy bien a las locomotoras a vapor.
awesome
This looks beautiful! I so want one now! What brand are those pullmans? Also what controller did you use in this video? WOWWWWWW!!!!!
Pullmans look like Wrenns
Is this the rail road model what exactly should I look for to get this exact model? is she loco drive ?
Yes loco drive. All Hornby models produced for about the past twenty years of new tooling have gone back to loco drive.
A new tooling of this locomotive and the versions with an A4 type nose have been announced by Hornby for release this year. Search Hornby P2 on RUclips for recent news.
shame about the white wheel rims chipping off
+Tom Salmon i remember my first flying scotsman trainset back in 1999 the motor used to be inside the tender before hornby moved it into the loco
