  • The Airfix Hunting Percival Jet Provost T.4 in 1/72 scale is a kit that is one of the products that Airfix tends to offer in gift sets periodically. Join me in this video as I complete an Unboxing Review of this plastic model kit (which also comes with Humbrol paints and cement) to see what this particular kit is like, only to discover a pretty big issue . . . .
    * UPDATE 1: During the build of this model I also discovered that the pilot seats had a couple of short shots as well - not as bad as the wings but still annoying
    * UPDATE 2: The Head of Brand at Airfix contacted me to say he has seen this video and will investigate the issue, raising it with the appropriate departments at Airfix and identify areas to improve their service (Update added 28/12/22)
    * UPDATE 3: Head of Quality at Airfix emailed me to inform me that he had found a spare part to send to me from another limited product line. I do not require one however and informed him to hold that spare part for someone else should they need it. If you have a problem with your kit you are encouraged to email spares@airfix.com with product details following the guidelines laid out here: support.airfix.com/hc/en-gb/a...
This will enable the Airfix team to identify the scale of the issue and act appropriately to rectify it (Update added 30/12/22)

To say I had seen the video of the latest 1/24th Spitfire, and they would not allow 'short shots' . That kit is probably nearly £50 and likely to be built by modellers over 50, who paradoxically have the skill to scarf in a piece to repair it. Why then should a £6 kit be so overlooked. probably built by a 6-12 year old; who (may not notice the shortage of plastic on the ailerons, its true) but may NOT crucially have the skill to rectify this admittedly small flaw?

@@hoppinonabronzeleg9477 the 1/24 spitfire is a £100 kit and is manufactured in the uk to very high standards, whilst these cheaper sets are manufactured in India as a cost saving method which seems to have been a bad decision as the quality control has indeed suffered in this batch

I found this a super little kit, no major issues except some slight short shots on the seats which were not visible once assembled. I used Stylinrez white primer to keep the red nice and bright, will finish the canopy and decals/transfers tomorrow as I've had a good glass of Sicilian Lemon Gin and my breath would melt plastic! Bought mine from Aldi a few weeks back and it is nearly done. I'm using only what's in the box as much as possible. Red paint is not great but I am hand painting everything so I would not expect a super smooth finish. I have noticed some short shots around the seats but I'm displaying it in flight mode on a 1/72 airfix stand so it would not be seen once the canopy goes down. Also some big gaps around the intakes and behind the nose wheel bay. Finally the instructions say to drill two holes for the stand, but the stand that airfix sells has a slot head so a bit of cutting and sawing is required. Otherwise it is a nice neat kit and I can't really complain as it only cost 8 euros. I built the same model late last year (different scheme) and that one cost me 14 euros and that was without the included paintbrush, glue and paints.

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  Год назад +2

The stands that airfix sells in the clear plastic are for the old kits where they used to come included - those were the ones with the slots. There is a newer design of display stand with a swivel head that has 2 pins that go into the 2 holes in the newer design of kits but these are not so often easily found in shops

I have built three of these. Two from that well known budget supermarket (other ALDIs are available😊) other than a minor problem with the seats, either hidden by the pilots or the seat inserts. Bit of a bargain if you ask me and got me back into the hobby again. I found the red paint brushed on fine after it had been primed by rattle can. I watered it down quite a lot and brushed it on. The first few coats looked awful but it built up into a reasonable finish.

A few things on this one (from someone with hundreds of hours working on the real thing) Airfix fluffed up the sliding portion of the canopy. The frame in the centre should be on the inside and painted black. And the perspex lip behind the rear frame of the canopy is missing. The T4 has a longer pitot mounting mast than the T3 that this kit was originally and the exhaust orifice is slightly larger but that won't be noticable in this scale.
Oh and the interior is black on the T3 and T4. grey on the T5. Hope this helps.

  • @Payne2view

Among the things I'd change is to not have a red background behind the "Central Flying School" decal. Too much of a risk of a paint not matching the decal colour red. A black decal for the anti-glare patch on the nose would be helpful to new modellers too as its a tricky masking balance otherwise. The wingtip fuel tanks have lights on their front, of reasonable size to have been given a clear part. Also, considering the detail of the cockpit, (and the fact it was a new-tool not long ago) the lack of posable flaps or other control surfaces seems a bit of a 'can't be bothered'.
I hope if they ever bring out a T5. that they include the nose lights and an option to not have tip tanks as they should also have provided with the T3.

The Airfix JP T5/Strikemaster kit from (iirc) the 70's is a pretty good kit and can hold its own against modern kits. It does have the clear nose light lens too and the option for T5/T5a. So with or without tip tanks.
To be honest I never saw a T3 or T4 without tip tanks in service but I am ready to be corrected on that score.

Hi and a Happy New Year to you. Apologies for being a tad too descriptive! Seeking any words of wisdom you may offer?
A returnee after a long time, basically starting from scratch. Totally overwhelmed through watching way too many expert builders, with years of knowledge and experience and wanting to be that good from the get go. At least not having to ruin too many or too expensive kits to achieve some proficiency. I've recently calmed down to having only minor palpitations at the thought of starting!
What I hope you might offer some advice on is in relation to my number one dread... seams and filling gaps - perhaps you have posted a video somewhere in your library? I get migraines thinking about this, which is how to fill a gap and sand it or a seam without removing either (a) too much material; (b) any or all the detail next to the work area; (c) worse, damaging the finish of the part adjacent to that fill/seam?
Used to renovating houses, no matter how careful I'd prepare a surface, filling a dent or a cut out, old screw holes, fill a gap between 2 or more components, sand it carefully, it was always visible even after painting, but with styrene, I'm wary of scratching up smooth surface finishes next to those gaps and seams.
So pardon this 'lazy' question this might be answered somewhere. I've only ever found general tips on it which don't cover the potential of damage as outlined.
    Cheers, Ed.

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  Год назад

thanks! If i'm honest, sometimes I don't bother filling and sanding seams or gaps - but when I do i apply small amounts at a time and then use some fine sand paper (usually over my finger so i can feel what i'm doing) to sand it down. The finer the less likely to remove other details. Sometimes it is unavoidable though and they might need rescribing with a sharp knife or tool to do this.
Modelling is doing what we enjoy though, and if you don't want to do something don't feel pressured to do so :D

Aldi and Airfix have a bit of history with this. I feel that Airfix must do a deal with them to sell them kits that have got issues. The first batch from around three or four years ago had kits with the wrong decals included and instruction sheets where they had used the wrong font (wingdings would you believe it!)! A final point is that your warranty is with the shop you bought it from so Aldi should replace or refund (and I'm sure they gladly would do so). Having said that its poor that Airfix don't stock spares for a current kit but i guess this kit has come direct from India and perhaps just been boxed up in the UK. The Airfix spares department is just a room full of shelves and they chuck some kits in there and strip them for spares when needed. I don't know why people are even surprised that a cheapo Airfix made in India for as little as humanly possible have terrible quality?!
These kits are a joke if you have even a slightest interest in accuracy. There are much better brands for braille scale models than Airfix - even although I know you brits have a soft heart for this company, you've got to admit that all of these cheapo outsourced kits are abysmally bad... Recently Airfix have proved that they can make sort of accurate kits themselves, but only a selected few larger - and expensive kits. If you spend £10 on a kit including something that looks like a paint brush and some coloured goo, it's going to be crap.
It's a golden opportunity to break out those scratch building skills and do it justice, but then you might as well just do everything from scratch because it's not going to take any less time. ;)
Gone are the days when Airfix had shelves of sprues as spares if anyone had a missing or broken part, collected and packaged by a gentleman in a suit because the brand meant something!
Today it's outsourced, cheap and nobody cares if they're dodgy because people still buy their kits for unknown reason... (nostalgia and not knowing better)
I know some of you will get upset by my criticism but let's be fair, scale modelling 2022 means crisp, super detailed and accurate kits whereas things like this stopped in the early 2000's, some even a lot earlier than that. Nostalgia often puts a haze over your eyes when it comes to criticism. I've been there too but I got over it and went with the evolution.
If you still want to build cheap small airplanes you can pick up a couple Tamiya/Hasegawa/Academy/Zvezda etc kits for example. No short shots or missing parts there. No super detailing either but if you want cheap but great quality. Oh, and stay away from any "all included" type boxes. Just saying... ;)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I'm sure the Head of Brand at Airfix might consider some of the points you raise to improve the company - I know he reads the comments on these videos because he told me lol

@@ModelMinutes I'm in regular contact with distributors and manufacturers and I wouldn't write publicly unless I wanted it to hopefully be read by someone who cares. Most of us non-brits gave up on Airfix years ago because they fell so horribly after everyone else as scale modelling evolved. They did surprise us with a couple well engineered kits but most of their stock are cheap kits from India that looks like late 70's Tamiya kits...
We who complain do it in hope of change because the hobby doesn't win with companies going bust, but this is usually overlooked by the fanboys who get upset by constructive criticism. Any criticism.
The reason why I hate these dodgy "all in one" kits is because out there some kid is going to get one of them as their first kit - and when he/she gets dodgy short shot sprues and terrible glue/cement and paint he/she'll never ever look at another scale model kit again thinking all are crap.
These kits should be the golden standard to make it a pleasant experience with the first scale model.
My first scale model ~40 years ago was a nice Tamiya kit and that made me want to build another. I've built more than a hundred kits to date and I do a lot of CAD design work and even made a few kits of my own. I usually spend 6-12 months per build depending on how many things to correct or modify/add. I don't want to begin a build with fixing what should've been right to begin with, hence my criticism.
It's up to every manufacturer to decide if they want to have accurate kits or not, but faulty or missing sprues/parts isn't ok for anyone. Nothing to "lol" about imho.
