- A talk through of a Case 1 recovery and STOVL (Short Takeoff & Vertical Landing) operations. I include the required key bindings for STOVL and Hover mode, as well as moving forwards and backwards in the hover (may change at release - check the manual). By the end you should know the basics of recovering your new F-35B onto and off of the deck of the aircraft carrier that indiafoxtecho is also planning to release. The next video will include Short Landings as well as some fun with Cat and Traps (Catapults and Arrestor Cables)! Thanks to indiafoxtecho for allowing me to trial this model as well as help me through some of the finer details! I also give thanks to 104th Maverick whose excellent Case 1 AV8-B video (channel linked below) gave me a good reference to work from for this video. I hope you enjoy!

A properly flown aircraft. Thank you! There is also another method for landing on a carrier, called Shipborne Rolling Vertical Landing (SRVL), which was developed for the new British carriers. That would be great to see with the new sim model.

Looks absolutely amazing, I could watch that take off on loop all day. Plus my worries wouldn't work well on xbox are solved. Already have controller binds set up that will work well. Can't wait to grab this. Just hope isn't toooo long for the marketplace as I don't want to buy twice
It's always tricky with MS updating the core sim files so often. Just look at what's happened to the PMDG DC-6! Fingers crossed. I do miss my xbox!

Very cool. A much lower workload than the (DCS) AV-8B. Hover mode looks great, although an LHD usually has a bit of steam up so you would need to match that speed. This certainly helps on the Harrier as the wind over the control surfaces plus the reaction jets are required for attitude control. I think the Royal Navy also developed a technique for 'rolling landings' which requires less fuel and presumably allows a higher landing weight (bring back more unused stores) as the full weight of the aircraft doesn't need to be countered purely by engine thrust. Please keep these videos coming, Chris, they are wonderful holiday treats.
Yup, that’s precisely what rolling landings are for, and I was lucky enough to have a go in the real F35 demonstrator sim as a youngster. Easy peasy! My next video will have a selection of take off and landing options 👍🏻
And I love the AV8B in DCS. The old skool in me prefers the challenge of the old control logic. None of the computer interference! 😄

V nice. Thanks for your channel Chris, I’m ex-RAF GR4 Nav and the visuals and immersive experience you’re demonstrating makes me want to get into flight sims now.. I miss the flying so much! Any chance you could let me know the minimum spec of the PC I’d need to run MSFS and these add ons and also the recommended sites to download the software… I’ve got my eyes on a HOTAS set up from Amazon…. You’ve resurged my passion for military aviation with these tutorials (and you’re good!). I have 50+ hours in the 100 Sqn Hawk T1 (CP in your ILS tutorial) so that one made me smile :-)
Thanks for the kind words! It is nudging so very close to looking real! If you check my website, link below, you can see my 2016 PC build. That ran it on high visual settings with traffic switched off. Min specs may be available in the Microsoft website. Addons are available in the sim’s built in marketplace once fully compatible. But I would recommend using Orbx if available as a simple place to download and organise addons. Otherwise you’re looking at Just Flight or the developers own website. You could use simmarket but I’ve stopped using that of late. Chose wisely with the HOTAS. Though I started with a Logitech Extreme 3D pro and it was perfect for many years til I got a Warthog HOTAS with 10cm extension tube. I also recommend MFG Crosswind rudder pedals. All depends on your budget 👍🏻

Now...i'm totally not pro military aircrafts in flightsim, unless it's for a military purpose. Like DCS for example. And of all the military aircrafts, the F35 is definitely not my favourite...BUT......this video might have change my mind about all my different views on the matter.

They have an external F35 mod you can download but the interior is a Mig model.

Turn on your lower looking camera and use the lines on the deck to perfectly align before descent.

great video, excellent, in mine when I activate HOOK/STOVL, it doesn't activate vertical mode, it lowers the hook, I don't know how to change it to stovl.

Cool. That seems very easy. It's not a Harrier. Compared to an F18, you know you can't miss the traps, so you know you won't miss the landing. That is why I like the mod F18 Super Warrior, as it's always possible for problems in such a landing. Did you experience any CTD? Indiafoxtecho seems to have delayed the release due to unexplained CTDs... Thank you for that and Happy New Year. 🍀🥂
I occasionally have CTDs with most aircraft as I ask a lot from my sim!

I just bought the F-35 addon and it's amazing! i just have a question, when i engage hover-mode the jet sometimes continuously turns left (counter-clockwise), it's as if it's being pulled constantly. I can't understand WHY. Does it have something to do with my flaps being at 30%? It shouldn't since it works other times, but i'm not sure

Is there any chance to do ,,butter" vertical landing? Everytime i see any vertical touchdown it seems very hard
You can do that if you wish. But firm vertical landings are the correct procedure to reduce chances of instability, pitching deck and hot gas reingestion.
Shame we still dont have 'Fly-by' views.
DCS style? Agreed. It’s possible with replay features. But they don’t include some of the unique animations to this aircraft.
@@cgaviator Yes like DCS. So the replay has Fly-by views now?
@@PhiLikeFlying replay allows you to place your camera anywhere and the aircraft flies its pre recorded route. But it takes a while!

@@PhiLikeFlying yup. Either the replay feature in MSFS, or FS Playground. Or Sky Dolly. Perhaps there are other mods as well!

Do you think it would be more "scan friendly" to toggle the ADI/PFI panel to a centre position on the panel?

@@cgaviator No worries. I scratch my head as to why they'd default it to the far left position? IIRC the P3D version was the same, and the developer is a stickler for authenticity, so go figure?
not me thinking it would somehow be different to a case 1 in a f18 (at least until the part where you start hovering abeam)
I’m no F35 pilot but I’ve seen a few Brit carrier landings. I’ve just blended the two into something useful for the sim 👍🏻

What are the chances you could share your knowledge over in DCS World once in awhile? There are precious few professional pilot content creators over there. Your style and material would likely be well received, esp by those who are looking for more depth than Ace Combat ;)

You mentioned watching out for trim changes. Doesn't it autotrim/do FBW?
The real thing, yes. But due to limitations of MSFS it is particularly difficult to achieve. I believe it’s on the list to develop when/if able.
Hmm weird. The guys from Top Mach Studios have it working well enough on their F-22. Hope Indiafoxtecho gets on it soon enough.
It is also interesting, like all MSFS2020 pilots, how to assign a keyboard shortcut for STOVL and HOVER in the control settings? PLEASE help and tell me!!!!
The manual should state which shortcut they’re using for STOVL. You then find this in the control assignments (Escape/Pause screen) and assign a key or button to it.

Very nice video, ready to purchase this one. I heard you made some references to your Streamdeck. Did you already make a profile for the F35?
I have started to use it more. Usually it's just to recenter TrackIR. But with all the 'workaround' key bindinds that developers are using, it becomes vital to remember them all! So I'm working on a generic page for all the most used functions. I'd love to produce some aircraft specific profiles. Perhaps one for the todo list!

How does this plane stay under control in STOV? Is the pitch angle limited to keep thrusters firing down? I’m guessing altitude is also held steady unless you pitch???
@@BravoCheesecake I knew that, but thx anyway. If you keep the stick at 0 pitch, will it maintain 0 pitch? How about when pitching up then letting go of stick? Does it pitch up and stay? Or drop back to level, 0 pitch angle, flight?
I’m guessing that it returns to level flight. There are other autopilot speed control options. It’s very configurable.

What control do I need to map a button to for my HOOK/VSTOL? I.e. what is it called in the function list so I can put it to a button on my throttle?
It should be in the manual. I think I mention it during this video. Or it's somewhere in the comments. Haven't used it for a while so I'm not sure off the top of my head.
@@cgaviator yeah, I figured it out. VSTOL is mapped to the lights on/off and HOVER is mapped to heading hold. Mapped them to a couple buttons on the HOTAS and it works great. Makes me appreciate all the more what an amazing aircraft the F-35 is. So now I'm gonna do the same setup in P3D and have all that plus all the other F-35 features that P3D has (Tacpack) that MSFS doesn't have yet.

You’re in the wrong jet! You have to select F-35B to have hover ability! 👍🏻
On moving carriers, mine rolls back and behaves terribly (wheelies and all sorts)

Yeah, true, but the fly by wire does keep it ridiculously on parameters. The wind would still love it slightly. Still, a good start.

Not a mod, it’s a full development and released already for PC.
The hover controls seem counter intuitive, illogical.
The way they’ve implemented them is a little odd, but the actual function is true to life. But there are other methods of speed control, just not modelled here. It’s all a work around for the MSFS game.

The flight dynamics look horrendous, doesn’t feel like the plane is alive compared to say a harrier doing a landing in DCS or x plane aircraft, im not knocking your video as in yourself
