It’s easy to make money in this business. Even easier to get burnt out. Been doing it for 25 years and for me it’s a passion. You have to love the hunt and get thrilled by the finds that make you happy. If your in it just because the money you are in it for the wrong reasons imo. Great video!
No offense but I guarantee with a comment like that you have other sources of income or help with income, totally different ball game when you 100% rely on online sales to support yourself
@@bobday1654 Me and my wife have done it both ways over the years. Totally depends what you want. Right now I am part time with the online business and my wife is full time. Next year maybe not. It truely is a passion for us. Our online business gives us the choice to do what makes us happy rather than be stuck working jobs that make us miserable. If we had to rely on just the online business to pay bills we have plenty coming in to cover that and i wouldnt trade that freedom for anything.
@@robertwells3019 I here ya and it’s a debate for another time, but that’s kinda my point, it’s u and your wife, part time, full time etc etc, if it was so lucrative you both would be full time. total game changer when you have absolute no help and rely totally online for an income My point is most people who say how great and easy it is don’t have to rely on it and most have other jobs and a spouse helping who say that. Craigslist hunters are 1 out of a 100
I'm fulltime and wife is stay at home mother " two kids under age of 2 " and yeah I love what I do it most definitely is extremely stressful relying on sales to pay the bills. I mean it's working out very well and I'm still putting money in the bank on top of my bills but that don't make it any less stressful
I have been doing this for over a decade. I have done just about everything at some point: Mercari, Amazon FBA and FBM, Antique malls, flea markets, FMP, Craigslist, OfferUp, and of course eBay. Ebay is the only one that I have consistently stayed with. At one time after I moved out of the antique mall, I had 13 storage units of stuff. I knew there was no way to list all of that. I had three on site auctions right before Covid that thinned out about half my inventory. I donated a lot, and moved the rest. I currently have a death pile that fills a 60 x 33 room, roughly six feet high, so there's still a massive amount of inventory. Listing has become a bore after all of these years. I am currently beginning some live online auctions to thin the inventory even more, and plan to scale the eBay inventory way, way down to the point where I list it as I buy it, so my death pile is eliminated.
I used to get quite overwhelmed when I had a strenuous and physical job, now that I have a desk job I have plenty enough energy to flip and manage a 600 item store while posting videos as well. It's been a blessing honestly.
Been doing this for about year and half and what I've finally learned is list your items you source asap. I've been suprised many times when items sell with in minutes or the next day. Use to source throughout a couple weeks then list. Not the way. Little tip: bn selling alot of halloween stuff lately for good money?
Thank you for stating this. I have bought quite a few things and just haven’t listed them yet. My “ to list “ pile keeps getting bigger. I need to buckle down and get it done.
People don't realize that it takes lots and lots of time to be a full time reseller. The most easiest part of reselling is that anyone can do is sourcing / buying the products to resell. The back end part is where people fail so easily. It takes tons of research, data entry and a ridiculous amount of monotomous work to get your listings up and shipped.
Not to mention eBay could suck somebody in because I think they’re starting an actual business with no start up funds just Need some product. I watch a lot of videos I don’t resell but I noticed they get their stuff at yard sale but then they’ll sell it with a warranty how old is that a plan for success when you don’t even know if things are gonna last. eBay doesn’t mind warranting because you’re the one that supposed to back it up.
This past year my son and I have made Ebay our full time endeavor. it has not grown to the point of sustaining us to be able to pay all bills so we ate through savings. My son went back to work full time last week, so now Ebay falls on me 100%. I am having to learn a new normal and not being able to rely on him to help with research and listings has been hard. Not having him home though as kept me from sourcing as much and I am n now working on the potential profit pile items only. Sales were amazing the 1st week of July, and fairly decent up until this week. I can tell with me being in a listing funk it has hurt sales. Hearing the "cha ching" is motivating, silence is deafening and hurting my motivation. As my grandma would say, "girl put those big girl panties on and get after it", so I will, failure is NOT an option.
I believe the main reason is that it's become very trendy and thus a large amount of people have begun doing it. Financial insecurity due to world/local events also is a factor. Many have started with little to no education or experience sourcing/selling and often spend a lot of money on bad inventory. That combined with slow initial sales probably discourages some and they give it up. I've been doing this almost 12 years and yeah it can get discouraging, tough or boring at times. Prices increase, competition becomes more aggressive, etc. You have to adapt and survive. Be smarter and faster than your competitors. TIPS: List and source consistently. Diversify your inventory types. List and source with the seasons, stockpiling during the off season. Offer discounts on old, stale, high priced or out-of-season inventory.
I’ve noticed that a lot of resellers love the treasure hunt and shopping addiction high but running the business side isn’t their strength. So massive death piles and the anxiety/guilt sets in big time! I believe a balanced model of sourcing (what you will actually list), research, great photos, listing, marketing strategies, excellent packaging/shipping practices, AND record keeping is the key to long term success. Getting help in areas that you’re not strong in or dislike. Oh, and they lack an organization plan from the get go. So, living in a “storage shed” all the time stresses the whole family out!! I think these are mainly the reasons people throw in the towel.
All true, I use Easy Auction Tracker, so that part is easy I keep track of mileage and supplies, everything else is downloaded from ebay. However, for every 2 days of picking I need one 12 hr day of photos and listing. Mostly Goodwill items
I think people are throwing in the towel because they can have 600 + perfect listing's and hundreds of auctions and put in 40 + hours a week trying to work out why they are not having sales with even promoting and yet earning 60 bucks a week.....that might be why people are like ......I'm out. But those people definitely won't purchase on ebay in future either I'm guessing lol
I'm not quitting Kevin but I am going back to my day job after two years full-time. My wife is taking over the day to day, and we are hoping in a year, I can comeback after clearing our debt. Also just got approved for Whatnot
I don’t even bother going to the thrift stores anymore. Way too expensive. I’m garage sale-Ing, but I can’t get it all listed, so it will keep me going through the winter.
With the new technology of Google lens thrift stores yard sales are pricing stuff mirroring actual prices on eBay. It was just a matter of time , Cheers from California
I am 15 years in (buyer) and about 3 years (seller). I will stay in business as sales keep me going. Just need to list, list, list items that are in demand! Love the info!
I was selling 50K per year on Ebay in a niche category about 10 years ago. Back then I was completely sourcing and selling on Ebay, which is no longer possible. After losing my job, I've started sourcing everywhere and selling everything. Not getting rich but paying rent and bills. Noticed recently that in the poor areas, there are at least six people who have resorted to just sitting and waiting for new carts at Goodwill. Overheard Goodwill employees saying that these people are getting aggressive with one another.
I'm not a reseller just have a passion for thriftimg and as another said it's all about the hunt but I digress. A month ago I drove an hour away to a college town and by the standards I've seen on ytube, a very small goodwill. I went on Sunday with my daughter and was shocked to see what you described. Hardgoods is very small, I was browsing a shelf when two carts rolled out. Before I cld blink those carts were literally surrounded by about 7 very aggressive resellers. My dghtr came up telling me there were no half price tags left in all the clothes. Children's and all. The half price color changes on Sunday. There should have been a lot. When the carts were thoroughly picked clean. About 20 min and they were gone with all the deals and anything good. To me that's being greedy. Ya know take some and leave some! I hadn't personally seen this but was shocked. I had noticed other goodwills not having any half price tags left. I think they drive from one to another and strip it! Not fair!
@@LisaGWoods hi Lisa, don't confuse greedy with people trying to make a living or supplementing their income since their salary no longer can pay for food because of such high inflation.
@@vintagecurio676 I'm not, it's just the fact this group seemed to be making a route to all the goodwills on the day the half off color changed and sweeping the store. I used to go on senior day, Wed, and find enough half off colors to suit. Now they're gone in a day. I'm all for resellers, want to be one myself. This doesn't quite seem fair to the little person!
We've had that discussion here (quite seriously) about closing the store. For various at-home reasons related to family responsibilities plus my continued (17 years at this writing) dance with a cancer from which one is never "cured", my eBay sales have all but stopped. But as you know, fixed overhead expenses do not. "Close shop" could be a good immediate answer, but I must also consider the not-so-small expense of liquidation... Inventory, moving and closing, closing annual business contacts, etc. We have been through that post-college nearly starving, living in tips, no corners left to cut life. We lived through that and grew up. My final thought in the discussion was, "Hey. I've almost DIED with the cancer THREE times! (So far) and not-dying is a lot harder than keeping a store alive. So the final (for today) decision was to grab onto my desk and hang in there! What would I do otherwise? There's no more afternoon soaps to watch on TV if I didn't have to go to work 😉
I had a viewer of mine contact me to buy her inventory out. I went and picked up 1200+ plush this past weekend. 23 years on eBay and this is my favorite niche.
I have noticed during and after covid it is harder and harder to find stock because now the number of resellers in my area have at least doubled. Also thrift stores are now starting to research items and pricing them where it is hard to make a profit. The Goodwill ,Salvation Army, and two other donation stores have recently hired people to look up items to price them accordingly to what they sell for online.I have noticed they are asking about 50% of the price it sells for online which is a good price if you were buying it for your own personal needs but not good if you are a reseller. Same at yard sales, people having yard sales are whipping out their phones and saying "on ebay that sold for $50 so I"ll take $40 for it so I say to them "well you can sell it on ebay then". I think within the next 10 years it will be too hard to be a reseller only.because there will not be enough profit in it. Also now most of the dealers in antique malls around here have told me that when covid hit they stated selling online and now they list everything online first if it does not sell online they bring it to the antique malls yet there are still booths that the owners do not want to bother with online sales so I can still find deals here and there.Still I think within 10 years it will be too hard to be a reseller because everyone will be selling their items themselves.
Hey Kevin, great Vid! I'm retired and my eBay store is currently idling (not closed). Due to a series of unforeseen expenses ( auto repairs, vet bills, etc.) I ran out of money to source. No sourcing, no sales. I'm not the type that gives up easily though. Took a part time job with the sole intention of feeding the eBay beast! I'll be back in the game soon 😀😀😺😺
Stony Creek Picker, when I was working, I took long breaks from Reselling but I always went back to it. When EBay started 20 years ago, I gave it a year to see if it would work and I was already listing online elsewhere, at work because I didn’t own a computer yet, like the classified ads and weekend flea markets. But years would pass when I didn’t have time for it. I always go back to it, eventually. Good luck in your efforts!
Maybe put it out there that you are interested in picking up friends/family 'donations'. You save them a trip to the GW and you can sort through everything and donate what isn't worth listing.
I started selling on eBay in March. I love sourcing my items. But I was stuck on just selling vintage items. But after some seeing what everyone else is doing I am going to change my store and sell different items. You have gave me lots of insight from these videos. Thank you for sharing.
I try to focus on one type of item but do try to list things in all categories just to help with my conversion rate and get my page some extra attention.
Unfortunately I will likely be closing my store at the end of the year. I'm due with my 3rd in January and we will be facing deployment soon after so it's going to be too much to take care of 3 and run the business. But hoping to get back into it again one day!
Thank you for your Service, I come from generations upon generations that have served in all branches and Police as well. Stay Safe and God Bless you and your family💜❤️🤗🇺🇸🙏🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
There is a lady near me who is getting out of the business because her grandchildren were coming to live nearby also she said because of shipping costs. She gave me a whole bunch of her inventory for nothing. I tried to give her some money but she wouldn't even accept it. This was about 4 weeks ago.
Hey Teacher, hope all is well! I am one of those thinking of selling everything, not because I have too. I just find it boring, since everyone I know works and got an opportunity to start something else, that will be more engaging. I am currently manifesting all my inventory, like the rest of us, my DEATH pile is HUGE. I will get a tally and see what type of offers I get out here in California. Thx for your knowledge...
What's funny is a lot of "eBay sellers"in the reselling group are going out of business perpetually. But they're not too smart about it because they use the same photos for their account or they sell on one reselling forum and then come up with another excuse on a different reselling forum. I love it when they get called out.
We've been selling on eBay since pretty much the beginning, and reselling at flea markets and group shops long before that. I don't think I could stop if I wanted to. I just took Kath (my wife) to the flea market downstate where nearly 40 years ago I first had that "ah ha" moment that I could buy stuff at yard sales and resell it for more. As you said, yes, there are bumps along the way - everything changes. Yes, it can be annoying at times, but we just roll with it and keep on. When I first started, I was primarily a rare and used book dealer (oh the stuff I passed up back then...), but market changes forced me to adapt and broaden my horizons (in a classic case of "video killed the radio star" - the internet hurt certain markets - and books were among them). I still buy books (you see that I talk a lot about them in my videos), but we've just rolled with the changes. BTW: Kath is saying we're jealous of your storage and shipping area! "Our house looks like hoarders live here," she says.
Just wait til you get that 1099 k firm EBay in about 4 months and then the IRS comes knocking wanting to know why you skipped paying tax on that money. People just don’t realize the changes they are about to face with the money they made on EBay.
@@jtcarter2967 So, we were audited for the year 2000. For what it's worth, we had our taxes done by H&R Block, and had them to help represent us. Anyway, at that time, I had already been on eBay a year or so. When the IRS representative was combing through our stuff, he asked us (in essence - it's been years, so we can't remember the exact words): How do I know you're being truthful (or however he put it). Back then, you could comb through everyone's listings. We told him, just go through our listings and see for yourself. He had to admit we had nothing to hide - we had claimed all our eBay earnings. Anyway, we always claim our earnings. Even then, even though we keep good books, it was an unnerving experience.
I'm more of a casual seller. Haven't listed in the past month due to being sick. I really like the fact I don't have to list if I don't want to. Not shutting down my store eventhough I only made $50 profit last month. I have noticed if I start to think of it as a business I tend to back off. I don't list anything. If I think I don't have to do anything, I start listing again. Weird I know. I got excited listing again, and finally listed multiple items in one day. It helps that I'm feeling better, and had a break. I don't rely or count on Ebay to pay the bills. It is nice getting in a little bit of extra money. Who knows sales just may pick up. I know I don't have to source. My mom has a storage unit full of items to sell. I haven't even listed half of what I sourced. They say slow and steady wins the race. I'm glad my mom agreed to have a yardsale to clear out some of her stuff. I could put it up for sale on Ebay, but she agreed to donate what doesn't sell. I forsee a lot of research in my future though. Everything she has is vintage or antique. I know nothing about buttons, marbles, and glassware. I'm currently learning about model trains, costume jewerly, and a little about postcards and paper items. If you read this far, I pray everyone's sales increase and you have a good rest of the year. God bless you.
Doesn’t matter if you only profited $50 you will be taxed on anything over $600 this tax season. The IRS is hiring up to make sure you don’t cheat them. People who sell old things are at a big disadvantage most can’t prove they have actually taken a loss for what they sell. You will see a sea of people leave EBay next year due to the new tax laws.
@@jtcarter2967 Technically, everyone is suppose to pay taxes if they made over $600 anyhow. I believe in my state it is $400. That never changed. What changed is making the 1099-K to match the law by reducing it from $20,000 to $600. I reported my taxes last year on Ebay eventhough I was well under the $20,000. After HR Block got done I was $0 for profit/loss. I expect to show a profit this year. It is better the IRS classifies you as a business rather than a hobbist. I started making more sales again. If everyone leaves Ebay because of this, then they have to leave all platforms that are required to give out the 1099-K. If you made $300 on Ebay, and $300 on Etsy, you would be given two 1099-K forms. Then you would have to report your earnings. The IRS will see it as $600 total. There probably will be people who quit selling online, and just do yardsales or donate their items because of this.
I am not planning on going out of business. I will do my best by the grace of God to stick it out and strive to hang in there. I get depressed sometimes, but I know it will get better.
I've been a reseller for 25 years. And I'm seriously considering retiring soon from this business. I will say, that over that time, reselling has been good to me. It's certainly kept the lights on and food in my belly, so I don't regret it. But what videos like yours generally don't show people is all of the negatives that go with reselling. The returns, the dud purchases, the shipping hassles, the clutter, the wear & tear on your body, the numerous burnt runs when sourcing and I could go on. And I'm not knocking your vids, most every other reseller here on YT does the same thing you do and why wouldn't you? You don't make money on those kinds of vids. I get it. I'm just giving an honest opinion about the reality of reselling. I think if you are going to be honest with people about reselling...........then be honest about it all. Now where ebay is concerned. I sold on there for many years. I finally closed my store down 2 years ago because the fees were just killing me. I already had a huge following so I took my business over to Facebook, started a reselling group and my business remains there to this day. I've been blessed to have loyal buyers and that is what has kept me in business. - I've sat on a lot of inventory that is either not a good fit for my group or is stuff that I don't want to low dollar out. I'm going to go back to ebay one final time here soon with those items. I will list them and let them sit for a few months and see what happens. Probably through 4th quarter. But after that, I think my ebay days will fully be over. I'm not trying to become a millionaire. I am just trying to survive like many others. And there are far too many options out there now, where ebay doesn't have to be the only choice. I am proud for and happy for all of those out there making good bank on ebay. And I will never belittle someone for using them as a source of income. But I do think that they have gotten so greedy and their lack of commitment to sellers as well as their inability to manage the technical side of their side is leading more and more sellers away from them and that will continue to be a trend. Resellers are finding that they have more options these days then ever and ebay's lack of willingness to support it's sellers in the way they SHOULD will be their downfall one of these days. They have been warned for years..........they've just chosen not to listen. And it's hard from a moral (and a business) standpoint to support a company like that.
@@DrTiwade gosh it sure is crazy that eBay, Amazon, Etsy, OfferUp, Mercari etc all end up at about 13-15% fees or higher just to basically host images and handle web traffic while you do the work when it's been practically the same for over 2 decades basically with costs decreasing immensely... Then you tack on those shipping fees that somehow regularly end up at ~50% or more of the sales price with upwards of 7% to 13% profit margins while not even spending a few million for the entire fleet for their actual delivery drivers to have air conditioning in record setting lethal heat waves. You know your eBay customers really want to pay for shipping not their product or even to help your small business! Multiple execs at eBay have overlaps with UPS directly... Hmmmmmm
People always forget time value of money. A lot of these are massive time black holes so unless you enjoy it or don't really have any other choice to try to make some money it really isn't especially good statistically it seems unfortunately.
Shipping costs have definitely made me rethink things that I purchase for resale. I find myself going do I really want to deal with the shipping, will anyone want to pay that cost...most of the time the answers are nope. I have been listing a lot more small items that bring a good return with low cost shipping. I am finally going through my vintage costume jewelry and sold a few. Easy to store and easy to ship. People like jewelry.
Any thing earned over $600.00 started in 2022 , you will get a 1099 and you will pay taxes on all your earnings... So it's not just the fees. Its the gas " in Ca over $5.00 per gal right now. Packaging and lables and this yr will be paying tax for sales over $600.00 to the IRS... Ebay and all online businesses will pay.
I factor the fees into my pricing. Unless I'm doing a yard sale, I have to pay someone to keep the lights on. Business costs money. As long as I'm doubling my money in the end I am happy.
Depends on what your selling that makes it tough, I cover about 10 goodwill stores in 8hrs, mainly electronics, boxed items, new and used, travel about 80 miles in a day. I get 1 or 2 large Ikea bags full always net $200 minimum after shipping & fees, use easy auction tracker that downloads from ebay to excel to cut down massive time on accounting, but it's the time photographing and listing that's the killer, cleaning the boxes, doing multiple photos, writing the listing etc... on the days I get $350 or more it's a thrill. made $2k net in August with approx 165 items listed, can;t seem to add more than that currently, I just keep topping it off. I only source 2 days a week at most since I do have a job. I still would like to get up to 300 items in my store.
@@twylah9047 that almost held me back because I hate accounting, but seriously 'easy auction tracker' made it simple it pulls everything off ebay and puts it into an excel spreadsheet, I barely have to think about it.
Here in the other commonwealth we are having huge problems with inventory at stores but the biggest problem Is pharmaceuticals. Dr's prescribe antibiotics in an ER and the pharmacy states its unavailable for 50 miles out or not available at all. Diabetics have been struggling to get insulin for months. This is what I think is going to happen...companies are currently stocking their stores from inventory they already have. Because our workforce is not returning to work the products we have is all we have. Buying through resellers will eventually be the only way to get items we long for. RIGHT NOW we do have companys overloaded with stock because of news reports about inflation and the fear mongering of it all. After this fear.mongering wears off, gas prices come down, stores offer sales and decrease prices, where are we? Christmas. And the purchasing will start all over again. Next year we will see that resale is again where its at, getting products for less is one thing but needing products we can't find any other way is what we are headed to in years to come.
I shut down my store after 13 years. I sold mostly children's books with free shipping but could not really compete with the big box stores. They sell books for less than $4 free shipping. Second reason, husband 84 mom 92 grandkids on opposite coast, I felt stretched to the limit and eBay didn't make it to the top. Now trying to clear out inventory. I live in the Reno Nv area if anyone is interested. Thanks Kevin!
I started last November and I have no interest in getting out anytime soon. I love the hunt honestly! I am a veteran and yes it is a constant grind but I love doing it! Trying to branch out on SM and I set up at all the bigger sales in KY so I can get the social interaction. It really is never the same with me day to day. I am narrowing down to toys because of the stories from folks I get to hear. Great video as always!
There are quite a few ebayers in my area that have just stopped. One woman stopped due to really slow sells, she couldn't make enough money on ebay to keep sourcing. She told me, if your business can't sustain itself it's not a business it's a hobby and money is to tight to just buy stuff to have sitting at home. Another person said that he just got tired of the scammer's on ebay, he hadn't been selling that long and quit ebay to use another platform. Most though are like the first woman that it is the slow summer and bad economy that it doesn't make sense to go thrifting and put your money into a failing business. I am not thrifting right now either, bills are to expensive, I'm shopping from my death pile. I have plans to quit ebay in a year or two anyway. What I have in my death pile ought to last at least 6 months. I'll decide then whether it's time to quit or not depending on what the economy is doing. Cash flow seems to be the major concern with everyone. I have over 3500 listings, I list at least 10 to 12 everyday, but, only sell maybe 3 items a day and have started getting no sell days. If things don't pick up in 6 months I may not take my money and invest it in a losing business.
Kevin in the last 3 weeks I’ve made 5 sales. 3 on Poshmark and 2 on Mercari. My husband is not impressed. They didn’t sell for a lot of money but I’m super excited. It took me a long time to get started.
Anna keep yourself motivated! People who put you down is because they don't understand your motivation. Everything starts small, and grows overtime 🙂 there's always that one person that's nagative, and it's just because they don't understand.
I'm not sure you'll see this message but I've got a real basic question for you. I noticed that y'all were printing your labels in bulk with the packages sitting on your table. How do you match up the labels to the packages?
Yard sale prices varying in Michigan many are to high, but very thankful for the ones I can find items to flip at, not giving up, enjoying sourcing and selling. 😊
I think if selling online is a recent endeavor for someone a slowdown can really shake their confidence. People get hyper focused on those big finds or specific dollar amounts or categories. You have to have the knowledge base (just like those old-time antique dealers) and keep expanding it. I have been selling on eBay since 1999, there have certainly been a lot of changes from then to now. There have been times I've taken a break, times I've tried to work for others (I HATE working for others now). I actually like all the aspects of this business and I make some money so I keep doing it lol. It IS work but it's work that can move with the other things you have going on in life.
I am currently in the process of closing my store... BUT That's because me and my wife are combining our stores together so that we can work together and not get burnt out!
I recently got a negative review and have been selling on eBay nearly 15 years with a 100% rating. I’m fed up with people using feedback extortion to get a refund or partial refund. I sell mostly video game titles so this has been an issue as of late as many people will claim games don’t work, not considering their systems having issues in the first place. I always test and list my games with detail and many photos and have a no return policy but have refunded a bit recently. I believe with inflation and prices going up consistently all over, buyers remorse is now more relevant than ever. Frustrated and a bit burnt out you could say. I agree with your statement, “1989… best year ever”. Born in 89’, I agree. Keep up the great channel!
Obviously part of the gig, but it's frustrating for me when I take time to clean up an item, post, research something I'm not familiar...and then get low offers stating my shipping is high. I'd rather toss in trash than profit $2 for a day's work. I'm not full-time, & my source is completely random items. I try not to take it personally, but you all know how I feel when our efforts don't seem valued. If someone thinks it's only worth $5, he or she needs to run to the store & grab it for that lol didn't mean to be negative 😇😘
I stop selling on eBay because of the scammers. There are so many that will so call buy but they don’t. Then you have to relist it. It’s more of a headache.
I've been selling for less than one year. The first 3 months went really well, then it totally dropped off. I even did the boosting, rearranging etc. No views, low views etc. Rather frustrated
Kevin, selling for one year, and right now sales are terrible, have been for weeks. I am in for the long haul, as I see it in my retirement future, so not relying on sales for survival. Hoping for a better Ebay future 😁
I'm making less right now, either due to the summer slow down or other things out of my control, I've been reselling for only about 6 months so I jumped into it at about the end of the busier part of the year. I could see why someone would call it quits running into such a slow period, but I love doing it too much to quit.
People always quit this time of the year. 2020 caused more people to try reselling. But its been long enough that its not fun anymore. Also unemployment is at a all time low. Lots of opportunities makes ebay seem not so fun anymore.
Yep! People who started during Covid saw unprecedentedly high sales. We are returning to “normal” sales volume & pricing. It will weed out a lot of sellers. 👍
Some are redoing their stores. From BIN to auctions. When I try to go buy something, it's been lumped into a bulk auction that I can't afford. One seller went to all auctions and I won't spend all week to be outbid on $1 items by 25c.
I am getting out of reselling because I went back to work full time. Between time constraints and needing the space that my inventory takes up it just isn't working for me right now. I have contacted an auction house in my area and he seemed to be interested but now have not been able to get in touch with him. So if anyone is in Virginia and interested in purchasing my inventory. I have a mix of small kitchen appliances, vcr/dvd players, toys, videos, coffee mugs and some craft items. Some brand new I got on clearance. Some used from yard sales and thrift stores.
I am considering closing my store. I work 40 plus hrs at my full-time job, have another part-time job, and do eBay as a third. Have a garage sale in two weeks to really thin out the store and see how well that goes before making a final decision before my store will renew in October.
Hi Kevin, love your channel. Been on eBay for 22+ years and it's definitely had its ups and downs. But continuing to go along with the changes as well as keeping up educating myself with anything and everything that comes out new. Like you, I've had a couple of folks ask to sell me their inventory as of late (which I took one person up on it) and I have heard a few folks deciding to leave eBay for good. Those folks gave me reasons anywhere from not having enough time to do that and their current job(s)at the same time or they are retiring from it altogether and just decided to leave the sourcing/selling scene in its entirety.
Once the IRS gets a hold of you, and many others, this tax season you will likely leave. There will be no more tax free money. EBay will be sending out 1099 k forms thanks to your government requiring.
took a few years but I realized that reselling is a lot like gambling .. you get that same happy chemical hormone release when you sell something so much so that many resellers are selling things too low just get that hit of that hormone . After a few years I realized I was spending more in a year than I was making ... not everything sells the year you bought it
We are struggling to stay alive. But more because of other issues. In just a few short months we have lost 6 very close family members in death, fought COVID and fighting long COVID, had our units broken into. So ours is more depression and motivation. We have stuff to post but as so much came from our loved ones I start crying everytime I start to post. I am still trying to find the balance and finding it overwhelming. If anyone has suggestions love to hear them. Ebay is my full time job so I need to figure it out quick
The Biggest reason I see people leaving eBay is the increased complexity now that 1099's are sent when you sell over $600. I think the time to get organized to make it a business is forcing people to think hard about what there time is worth...
Claiming income is not a new thing but that lowered limit is not allowing them to get away with not claiming that income any longer. I do think that limit should be raised to a higher limit like say $10,000 per year because some of these people are just trying to make ends meet...they are definitely not getting rich, even at $20,000 - both of those amounts are far from being rich. I have seen a big shift on fb market place to cash only sales and the flea markets around here seem to have a lot more of the yard sale type booths now. I think some of the people that are leaving the online market are moving to a cash only model.
100% agree your spot on with that and once tax bills come up in feb/March all the resellers that were not self reporting there income (minus there expenses) over the last 2 decades are not going to have a choice all these marketplace (not just ebay) are required to report what you make over $600 and trust me there are many especially new resellers that started during covid that blindly gave these marketplaces there SS# to keep selling but did not realize why these are the resellers that are going to jump ship once they get there tax bill from uncle Sam most hate doing taxes and most resellers who are not full time and treating this like a real business are going to see and feel doing taxes on online reselling is a waste of there time. I've been reselling since 99' first on ebay then Amazon auctins (yes at one time for thise that dont know amazon tried to compete with enbay and had auctions on there site) yahoo auctions, half.com (ebay trying to compete with Amazon lol) now poshmark mercari offer up craigslist bonanza etsy reverb the list goes one in this business it's all about diversity and not having all your eggs(selling channels) in one basket. I see a massive wave of online resellers (especially ones doing this on the side) jumping ship and going back to selling at flea markets, craigslist and offer up locally for cash. The resellers that have been doing there taxes forever and self reporting (if you made under the $20,000 and 200 transactions) this new law is nothing new and you have nothing to worry about. One rumor I heard in an Amazon forum is the possibility that the irs request prior years totals (prior to 2022) if that should happen alot of people that did not self report will have huge tax bills. The reason this new law happened was irs saw how much those marketplaces were making (there profits) especially the fees they were taking from sellers irs was like there should be way more resellers reporting there earnings and there not so they made this new law to force the companies to report you its no longer on the honor code to self report if you did less then $20,000 and less then 200 transactions I for one a 30 year plus on and off line reseller see this aa a good thing it will weed out all the ones who do not treat this as a full time job or real business because the irs is telling everyone if you make more the $600 reselling sorry to burst your bubble but you are a business in there eyes anything under $600 they consider a hobby.
I love reselling and i loved my independent job before this but it wasn't being profitable enough. So reselling is my part time along with a different independent job in construction. Hope to make it to full-time in reselling. I don't ever want a job i hate again.
I think a lot of people jumped into this during the pandemic. Maybe as hobbyist or full businesses and now its possible that their attention is pulled back into "real life" and ebay has had to take a backseat. Lets face it, there has been huge influx of sellers over the last 2 years and the ones who were doing it for fun or to make a few bucks are getting out as fast as they got in.
We're just reopening our store after a while of being homeless and out of state from our stock to resell. We're going to do a yard sale this weekend of things that have been veroed from our store.
I’m a young buck, but I keep my inventory small. It does effect how much I gain per month but I feel I’m control all the time mentally, I like being control of my happiness and life. I know that if I wanna call it a day I can just quit. It’s not my full time job so maybe it’s different for me. You think once I get older I’ll get over that being uncomfortable? Anyways I think you should buy other people inventory. I know I have I bought things for like 10 cents a piece but I spent so much money buying inventory. Make sure you got a large saving becuase at some point the sales are going to slow down ALOT and you’ll be sitting on it for awhile but once it picks up again you’ll reap the rewards. Great time to buy but easy to leave yourself vulnerable financially too.
I'm frustrated with eBay. The nickel and diming never stops, and the customer service is horrendous. Imagine having to sign up for Twitter or Facebook in order to get customer service. That's insane. They claim to still have a call center but won't give you a number for it. They want you to go through a bunch of worthless crap (or jumping through hoops) before you have an option to have them call you. Horrible.
The reason eBay and other large companies make you jump thru hoops to get to a human comes down to cost. To deal with a customer thru chat or AI costs 30 to 50 cents. To have a human talk to that same customer is about five bucks. That's why auto-attendants have become ubiquitous. Humans cost too much, as far as the bean counters are concerned. It's a high-tech, low-touch world.
You would think ebay would want my stuff to sell but they still want me to promote and when I don't they bury my stuff. It's almost like they don't like money.
We found a craigslist post by someone who closed their "closet" of reselling but they didn't have anything we work with. Haven't seen much else like that going on local to us
No. We are actually getting ready to amp up our listings again. We had pulled back a bit for personal reasons and when we were getting back, sourcing was nuts because of the flood of people, so we waited it out. Beginning to see a difference out there (crowd-wise and price-wise) from even just a month ago.
Ebay seller here. I'm having a lot of issues with paid promotions not getting any views at all. And when you're charging me 12.9% I'm going to find elsewhere
I love the hunting and have a great full time job. I am about to shut it down though. Sales are almost nonexistent and I’ve had nothing but positive reviews and shipping quickly.
my sales dropped off, took a staycation in California with my best friend, got sober, got smart, im taking down 500 listing. and focusing on high dollar tried and true items in very specific niche, not sorucing everything anymore , too much time, money and space taken up, mine are 1. knives 2. zippos, 3skateboard memorobilia 4. expenisve watches, 5, trucker hats, and hats that ship 25 dollars or more, no more 20 dollar hats, those days are over and gone for ever , shipping cost and overhead cost - i sold many hats in the last 5 years for as little as 7 dollars free ship, the world changed dramatically in 5 years, probably for the best as im in this for money and lifestyle, im a buyer through and through if sales stop, buying more stuff does allso , its all i care about i wann hit sales and make them equally
Hi Kevin! Great Video. In watching the reseller videos, I do believe it is alot of work on all levels. With gas prices and resell store and the very high shipping rates, I think it is difficult to be seller. And as a buyer, the shipping costs are ridiculous. Thank u for your videos! 🛍🛍
I mainly sell video games, but I have had a lot of resellers getting out of ebay. Most say fees are to high and they lose to much on fees others are getting out of it for moving onto new reselling focuses. However, even as these other resellers try to sell out I have noticed they are trying to still get retail value, not really resale pricing. But hey to each their own.
I’ve taken down all my BINs. Just running a few auctions. Planning out my first Whatnot auction. Really planning out all of next week. I will probably close down my store or change my subscription to lowest tier and have it sit there until they fix their BS.
I sold on Ebay in 1999 until about 2005 while it was fun. Not for a living. I sold stuff I had laying around. My specialty was used car parts. Fast forward to today's online selling it's changed 100% plus they require a 1099 for almost nothing in sales and with 87K armed new IRS agents soon to hit the streets I am wondering if that will cause a mass desertion of Ebay sellers. I enjoy your channels. Keep up the good work.
I have 3 boxes of variety of books I’ve had myself and was going to eventually list them. My church is having a church yard sale in two weeks and decided to check sold items and they all basically sold for $2-$3 so they are going to church sale. Its not worth my time and fees.I don’t even want them back in my house. I’m wondering if people are wanting cash for their for sale items because of the $600 IRS rule for 2022.
I have to say that not every month is the same as the last earnings-wise, but I love reselling. I spend 2 hours thrifting 3 days a week as I babysit 3 days and have Sunday off. I've been selling on and off over 6 years and finally became full time in 2020. It beats the heck out of working in retail, schools, or in a factory.
I've just been selling Gamecube games (they go for quite a bit) but the fee percentage eBay takes KILLS my profit by a long run. Good thing I only sell here and there just to get rid of something, ebay is getting ridiculous on what they charge after the buyer pays.
I'm from the UK, I randomly used to sell a lot of things on ebay like old collectables, coins, and other surplus items but I wouldn't have considered it a business or online store. Now, I can't get paid into PayPal anymore, my bank must be uploaded and it's impossible to sell anything without completing all the KYC 🐃💩. So I simply don't use ebay anymore. It's over complicated and they ruined it...... From this point, I hope they've noticed a significant drop in revenue and this continues on a downward trend. Great work!
I’m besides myself at the moment with my store on “time away” until mid-August. I’ve moved out of my home, and just beginning to shop for a new home in RI. The market is nuts and I’m trying to wait for prices to fall further, but it’s tough being away from my eBay store. When I was moving it I did consider selling it all! I’m currently living tiny and no space to run my store. 😩 I’m considering starting a second store. Great video, Kevin! ☮️
I was trying to figure out recently who the OG youtube ebayer was. I think back to Bonafide hustler being the original. And his channel goes back 10 years. Does anyone know of anybody that goes back further?
Same here! I like selling a little bit of everything but heavy on shoes. I’ve more returns the past 3 months then ever before! I know shoes can be hard to get to fit however, it’s weird how many are returning them. I didn’t get one shoe return last year. Returns, complaining customers and low sales don’t motive me.
@@lajohnson1967 I think that with the increasing prices of everything across the board, people now return things where in the past they may have chosen not to do so. When money is tight, people always go the extra mile to save when they can, which unfortunately means a higher return rate back into your inventory. Have you considered charging a restocking fee as a Band-Aid for yourself for when this occurs?
I havent decided to "leave" ebay for good as of yet, however things are definitely more stressful and confusing than they used to be. I have recently listed enough items to double my inventory size. That being said, i am getting double digit watchers on many of the items. The items are priced competitively as Im not trying to push for best possible price. Seeing lesser quality listings sell before mine. Also getting single digit views on high sell thru items like Air Jordan's and Air Max deadstock shoes
Sometimes I'll buy an item from a closer seller if the price is reasonable. If it means I have it a couple days sooner sometimes and I really need it soon I'll buy from that seller instead. I sell wrestling DVDs and people will come back to me even if there a better deals because they've appreciated the service in the past. One out of ten may get a free item so I can keep them coming back, it's been working.
Thanks for sharing the video and the information always enjoy watching the videos and reading the comments nice pickup truck a year before my oldest son's graduation I purchased him a 1965 Chevy pickup he loved it it's sad he was murdered own Easter 2020 I have a son less than 13 months younger I sure miss my oldest hang in there every one some sales may be slow but people are vacationing and traveling so hopefully by fall sells will pick up take care God bless each and every one of you
You have some interesting collectibles. My ebay sales have been way down so I moved half my items to Atomic Mall. Doing much better there. Haven't tried Whatnot yet but I intend to!
My sister shut down her ebay store 6 mnths ago; ebay ghost-listed a number of her items, she was unaware of what to do, instantly refunded and posted "out of stock" which crushed her rate. She is sticking with shopify and etsy. ebay rep told her to mark "bad address" ... which would have been a lie, but thats what they told her to do
I love my husband so much for putting up with listening to your videos day and night but today he heard the music and he said paddle faster -I hear banjo's.. 😆
Love your yard sale videos. My favorite of the resellers i watch on here. I think I disagree about people getting out of reselling. At least in California. The thrift stores and Walmarts are just stacked with resellers. Seems to be more crowded with every week that goes by.
Knowing that the items you pick will sell by using data (sell through), and only buying what you actually intend to list (then actually listing them) are the keys.
Hey Kevin or anyone in chat so eBay made me pay $9 for label, and print my shipping labels from my local library. Is that why I paid $9 or do I need to get my own label printer?
Getting your own printer is definitely a good idea if you're selling a lot. If you're just starting, label your packages by hand and take them to the post office. The $9 shipping question depends on what postage you're paying for. There's a wide range. I hope this helps. Take care!
I know you love you ROLLO but mine just arrived & after 2 hours on their chat app, over 2 hours on a scheduled customer service call plus 30 minutes on a call with the supervisor, (and hours of trying to figure out the issue on my own), I’m still looking at a piece of junk.
I'm pretty new on eBay.. 6 months about. Im just shocked at how much fees they take! When I hit $1000 in sales, i only had almost $600 in my bank account!! They take almost half??!! 😮
@@robertwells3019 I here ya and it’s a debate for another time, but that’s kinda my point, it’s u and your wife, part time, full time etc etc, if it was so lucrative you both would be full time. total game changer when you have absolute no help and rely totally online for an income
My point is most people who say how great and easy it is don’t have to rely on it and most have other jobs and a spouse helping who say that.
@@bobday1654 lol you need a more secure job with health benefits. thats why im part time.
Thank you for saying this I been stocking up on inventory but only slowly listing I honestly been slacking and I need to pick up the pace.
I’ve been doing this 6 years, and this year is the hardest year for sourcing for my husband and I.
Yes same here…I buy store units and they are through the roof to the point where people are losing money
It was just a matter of time ,
Cheers from California
Not fair!
Do you by chance live in Oklahoma! You seem to perfectly describe my experience!
@@LisaGWoods hi Lisa, don't confuse greedy with people trying to make a living or supplementing their income since their salary no longer can pay for food because of such high inflation.
@@vintagecurio676 Yup. Lets Go Brandon
There's no more afternoon soaps to watch on TV if I didn't have to go to work 😉
Sending you lots of love and continued great health.
I had a viewer of mine contact me to buy her inventory out. I went and picked up 1200+ plush this past weekend. 23 years on eBay and this is my favorite niche.
Love your content Rebel.

That’s me too. All vintage and vintage just doesn’t move fast
But hoping to get back into it again one day!

hello - what are you looking for - we are starting to thin out - dave and mardi -
There is a lady near me who is getting out of the business because her grandchildren were coming to live nearby also she said because of shipping costs. She gave me a whole bunch of her inventory for nothing. I tried to give her some money but she wouldn't even accept it. This was about 4 weeks ago.
Seems like the grandkids would love to help. I know mine do. I give them a bit of money to help me.
So many young people on RUclips, but with age comes wisdom. Thanks for your wisdom.
I love that you store your inventory by item instead of number system. So much easier all the way around.
Even then, even though we keep good books, it was an unnerving experience.
i dont blame them.. i cant do ebay because of the crazy fees, taxes...
not worth it..
I'm in Scotland. I just moved to being a business seller two weeks ago. I've only had five sales since I changed. I used to get 40 sales in two weeks.
I am not planning on going out of business. I will do my best by the grace of God to stick it out and strive to hang in there. I get depressed sometimes, but I know it will get better.
God bless honey. I am struggling but determined!
🙏🙏🙏
You got this. Talk about it. Go thru it N grow thru it but never give up 🫶🏽
I've been a reseller for 25 years.
You are absolutely right
the youtubers never tell the whole truth and behind the scenes, theres some much more to all this reselling crap then wht they actually tell/show
Right on. We stopped selling many years ago.
Any thing earned over $600.00 started in 2022 , You will rec a 1099 from the IRS and you will pay taxes on all your earnings...
I’m a dumpster diver and I started in March and I’m going strong, I love eBay. I sold a lot, all profit except for fees.
Don’t look now but you will lose more to the IRS next year. They are coming to collect on that money you made.

@@twylah9047 Which is BS because it's not even a living wage and is technically illegal that it even passed.
That is awesome!
Anna keep yourself motivated! People who put you down is because they don't understand your motivation. Everything starts small, and grows overtime 🙂 there's always that one person that's nagative, and it's just because they don't understand.
I love using mercari I do good on there. Nice easy & quick to make a post .

I'm not sure you'll see this message but I've got a real basic question for you. I noticed that y'all were printing your labels in bulk with the packages sitting on your table. How do you match up the labels to the packages?
Hello to all friends of CWP ! Uncle Mark and I are excited to have you visit our yard sale on Saturday, September 17th. Lots of good buys !
Lol
This has been the hardest year sourcing at yard sales... and I've done this recreationally since 2010
Same Here
It has been the easiest and best so far for me. But I suppose it depends on location.
Yard sale prices varying in Michigan many are to high, but very thankful for the ones I can find items to flip at, not giving up, enjoying sourcing and selling. 😊
Thanks for the Teddy Ruxpin, it arrived today. I have a battery cover for it. Really appreciate the deal :)

Don't waste time testing the games. Sell for less, as is. Will give you more clout with refusing returns. Good luck!
A couple Negative reviews dont matter much to buyers. If they want what you have they will buy it!
I found you and a few other's through Hairy Tornado as well. y'all are some good people and I'm glad I found each one of you.
Glad you found a buyer for the Bears stadium blanket! Am loving the magnified closeups on the small stuff!💕🐰
Me too! Love that detail.
@@jtcarter2967 don't know about everyone else, but 1099's is old news to us. Weve been turning in for years.
took a few years but I realized that reselling is a lot like gambling .. you get that same happy chemical hormone release when you sell something so much so that many resellers are selling things too low just get that hit of that hormone .
Use Easy Auction Tracker, software it's inexpensive good for the whole year and downloads from eBay to excel. Very low maintenance
All the vero violations are not helping.
I’m not going out of business but I am switching niches so I have my clothing at a 30% off sale to try and get it moved.
Sales are almost nonexistent and I’ve had nothing but positive reviews and shipping quickly.
my sales dropped off, took a staycation in California with my best friend, got sober, got smart, im taking down 500 listing. and focusing on high dollar tried and true items in very specific niche, not sorucing everything anymore , too much time, money and space taken up,
mine are
1. knives
2. zippos,
3skateboard memorobilia
4. expenisve watches,
5, trucker hats, and hats that ship 25 dollars or more, no more 20 dollar hats, those days are over and gone for ever , shipping cost and overhead cost - i sold many hats in the last 5 years for as little as 7 dollars free ship, the world changed dramatically in 5 years, probably for the best as im in this for money and lifestyle, im a buyer through and through if sales stop, buying more stuff does allso , its all i care about i wann hit sales and make them equally
Greed
Love the license plates!! And the knowledge. Thanks
Thank you Brother. So nice to meet you and Flipcon. Hope to see you again some time.
Not going out of business. My eBay is picking up.
My friend did it for three months said it wasn't for him.
Someone told me he getting out and I wonder if I am buying their dead weight. He said his income is too inconsistent and taking up too much room
Vintage by Flo here, I started selling last year and did we did well till summer still selling but it's slow but I love it
Don’t want to quit but my motivation is in the pits.
Thanks for sharing the video and the information always enjoy watching the videos and reading the comments nice pickup truck a year before my oldest son's graduation I purchased him a 1965 Chevy pickup he loved it it's sad he was murdered own Easter 2020 I have a son less than 13 months younger I sure miss my oldest hang in there every one some sales may be slow but people are vacationing and traveling so hopefully by fall sells will pick up take care God bless each and every one of you
this biz was better before youtube started saturating the market
lol
That's funnny
Love your yard sale videos. My favorite of the resellers i watch on here. I think I disagree about people getting out of reselling. At least in California. The thrift stores and Walmarts are just stacked with resellers. Seems to be more crowded with every week that goes by.
Any thing earned over $600.00 started in 2022 , You will rec a 1099 from the IRS and you will pay taxes on all your earnings...
No they dont take half. The 1000 in sales in cludes shipping cost as well. So between fees and shipping it looks like 40 percent. Pretty typical.
