We ride on the BR 23 023 of the Stoom Stichting Nederland, at a maximum speed of 100 kph. This locomotive is pulling the Nostalgie Express today and it runs from Rotterdam via Gouda, Utrecht, 's-Hertogenbosch and Nijmegen to Arnhem. Finally the train continues to Beekbergen to fetch water and to turn the locomotive. Cabview Heritage is fully participating and this ride will be posted in stages over the coming year. This is part 2 of the ride: We depart from Utrecht Central and drive to 's-Hertogenbosch. Superbly engineered, but being British I have to respectfully disagree with the title. Not only did we build the first steam locos but I would say the best. The A4 streamlined Pacific's, Mallard the world's fastest steam loco, Sir Nigel Gresley, the articulated Beyer Peacocks and Beyer Garratts. The beautiful 'Kings and Castles' on the GWR, ' God's wonderful railway'. Let's not forget Tornado, the brand new steam loco and the A1 Prince of Wales currently under construction.
I take my hat off to the German engineers but...
But thank you for sharing this wonderful experience, whoever is firing this loco really knows his stuff, excellent fire.

The German DRG 05 002 set her only 0.5-1.5 mph (depending on source) slower speed record on level track though, not slightly downhill like the Mallard did, and the Mallard needed repairs after the record run (one of the big end bearings overheated and had to be replaced) while the 05 002 didn't. The 05 had a higher regular service speed limit than the Mallard as well (105mph vs. 90mph). And 05 002 still holds the start-stop speed record for any steam locomotive, traveling 70 miles non-stop with an average speed of 86.6 mph.
Edit: BTW, the Tornado has a boiler constructed in Germany ;-)

i understand you feel offended by the title. But the germans made the best steam locomotive, german DRG fastest run on level track with no overheating boiler. but the bbritish made very good locomotives as well.
