I hope that "He who shall not be named" version of the simulated economy still gets eventually realized. It was very encouraging the few times we got to witness him passionately talk about it.
Which may be why they have said nothing. Imagine he had left in a fiery or sudden way. The ongoing funding is depenednt on player confidence. If CIG told us 3 years ago "Tony Z left, Quanta is up in the air, we will need a few extra years to finish it now" that is 100x worse than when they admitted that the BMM was being pushed back, and that time their hand was forced because they had JUST promised us they were finishing it up, and needed to tell us they were actually not going to finish it up. 🤷♂️
That was riiiiight around the time CIG suddenly switched all their staff over to go full steam on Squadron 42, and the PU got left to moulder for a few years.
I suspect he left before that, and to minimize the impact on perception and on development, they switched up the plan to cover up that Quanta was dead in the water, and had been. The "progress" on Quanta was never realized or demonstrated to be advancing. Behind the scenes, I don't think it was. At least, we've never seen it.

@@ChristoffRevan maybe. Maybe as others have suggested, there was a settlement, and not announcing his departure was a part of it. Or maybe he has a stake in the company, and knows his leaving would cost the project. Maybe he lost his password. Who can say? I'm just speculating. He's been MIA for ~3 years, and Quanta is still vaporware.
I hope that “He who shall not be named” is ok and still part of the project.
I'm wondering if HWSNBN was a cynical red herring of some sort. :(
I hope he is okay, too. Tony seems like the kind of person who is most comfortable in a research role rather than a production role, so my suspicion is that the extreme stress of producing an actual product has something to do with the lack of any mention of Tony Z.

From the context of the video, StarSim is just their rebranding of Quantum to make it less confusing. But, in terms of less confusing... referring to Tony Z as "He who must not be named" made me think of Voldemort, but then Hamlet, and that reminded me that I still need to see the Alexander Skarsgard, "Northman."
I now want to see Jared holding up a helmet, quoting Hamlet. "Alas, poor Quantum! I knew him well."

Interesting thoughts on the freight management System. I never liked that Tony Z and team named everyting Quanta. It was so confusing, similar to most Shakespeare works such as a Mid summers Night, Roweo and Juliet, Great Expectations, and Hamlet.
There are more things in heaven and earth than my small Hamlet I plan to build in Pyro.
Heh, Hamlet. Anyway it's wild at how much energy that Tony Z's disappearance has generated. I can only hope that he's still plugging away somewhere simply because the scale of Quantum is simply too large and he's trying to either cut it down or make it more efficient.
I like your idea of having the option to auto-generate box sizes depending on the ship you're trying to load. I was thinking of this the other day as I was hauling with a Taurus- many ships require box jenga to load properly and this will probably cause a lot of frustration for some time after launch.
The new economical system they are working on really good, I saw there was a not so live with "He who shall not be name" he had a lot of good insight

Yeah, I suspect the same too. I also suspect that there was some sort of NDA that binds both parties. Which would explain why CIG has remained so silent for so long.

When a person leaves or is fired, their name is verboten at CIG. Unless CIG are cornered and have to say something (as they were with the BMM), they simply pretend the person never existed.
It isn't just that he hasn't been seen, it is that nobody from CIG has spoken his name in years.
@vorpalrobot we will see nothing, just like last Citizencon where he was MIA. Why are people spreading this narrative that he doesn't like to appear on camera when he's done it dozens of times before?

Since they acknowledged other peoples departure even at higher levels like Todd Papi - im not entirely conviced that 'he who shall not be named' is off of the project or out of CIG. If there is no mention at CitizenCon.. then that would be more of a red flag ..but im still holding out hope Tony Z will take the CitCon stage, like Tony Stark at the Stark Expo this year and dazzle everyone.
Before I knew who Tony Z was, I saw a lot of off hand references about how he'd left the company and it was such a large conspiracy (or so it seemed) that I needed to find out who it was. Makes sense now how you've given him the title of "He who shall not be named" hahahaha.
While im sure that the qunatum system imagined by Tony Z is still there at heart. And a node system will work.
I think it is posible to make quantum work exactly as they origonally envisioned it.
They just need a few priority queues with a random selection modifier which weight for items higher in the queue. (I can think of 3 ways of setting this up) One for each tradeable commodity. Then anytime a quantun NPC wants to trade something, all they need to do is access the queue, and now you have a destination.
Then all you need to do is use the node system for the quantum navigation.
And suddenly you have a simple quantum system, provided that you don't overpopulate it. Which is what I think CIG did.
A simple system run once, is fine. A million times, is okay. A trillion times, and you may have an issue. Especially, if your accessing it each second. And after seeing as many NPC spawn and navigation bugs i have, i think this is likely an issue.
Can't wait to read Hamlet while sitting on a couch in my persistent hangar!
Mostly non-sequitur, but I just realised I we have pirates in SC and you could in theory set a machinima version of Hamlet in Star Citizen.
Not sure why TonyZ chose Quanta as the name for this mechanic unless he was trying to quantify a set quantity that then need quantum travelled through the 'verse. XD Another great breakdown and I hope TZ fairs better than Prince of Denmark.
The name Quantum was chosen due to the idea of probability volumes created from quanta and player actions which resulted in those probability volumes being fed into wave functions that would collapse giving rise to dynamic missions. It was a much more appropriate name for what they envisioned and was before they decided that everything had to be prefixed by star.
Where is he who shall not be named? This is the most exiting thing about all these.
Interesting Hamlet quotes thrown in there - it seems that whatever progress is being made on economy, Tony Z isn't the one directing it for one reason or another.
They need a wiki for all the terminology and get consistant. My little Hamlet is waiting in a safe spot.

Perhaps Hamlet and I misheard it, but the impression I got from the latest SCL was that "Quantum" = "StarSim". Then again, we won't really know what it is until they tell us sometime in the future.

I've been in 3.23.1 practising with 'logistics'. Container handling isn't reliable and their are still other bugs with basic operations. I'm looking forward to 3.4 being a lot easier to do basics like getting a Pyro Multi tool to have a Tru-Hold Tractor beam to fit in it. Thanks for your Evocati experience update!
Interesting. I dont think I've actually seen the whole play; Hamlet. I do think something significant is up with the "He who shall not be named" situation.
I think a lot of creators forgot we dont understand quantum.... When not referring to quantum drive.

I honestly believe the Quanta idea which "He who shall not be named" created looks great on paper but as you have said will not scale well. It will require a lot of server resources to simulate all these little bots, so a least effort solution is needed in place of this.
"He who shall not be named" sounds like a name that can't be blamed for things if they go wrong.
Hamlet. As someone interested in the development, I wish CiG was more open about roadblocks and things that don't work out as planned and what they want to try, but seeing what's going on on the Spectrum most of the time, I can understand why they don't. Nonetheless, open development or not, I hope that "He who shall not be named" and the rest of the team figure things out. Be nice to see 1.0 soon and not in yet another decade.
One other thing to consider eith how cargo running will be handled is if they will interwine it with mission chains thst would draw inspiration from story lines like Halet, Romeo and Juliet ( two warring factions thst fight each other, would would fit into Pyro nicely), or Journey to the West or something else. Just be wary of anything involving a black blade named Stormbringer that thing is evil and will eat your soul for a snack.
Let's see if Tony Z's vision is feasable.

I think we may also be seeing what is essentially the BIG deal about start citizen (that being quantum economy) if you consider games like Star Atlas and others basically trying to copy the model of SC as its being produced it makes sense to me that the "holy Grail" of tech would be keep very tight to the chest until it was ready...Really hoping its something amazing when its all said and done.
Maybe Quanta is what they call the Background Simulation (if there is one) in SC.
Wonder if players will ever have a Hamlet moment of "To be or not to be".

If CIG has figured out a way to simulate the economy better than the Quanta system then I suppose I am all for it. I just want to be able to fly out to my own tiny little hamlet and fish someday.

I'd expect the economy, whatever they call it, to have had to go through several rethinks necessitated by the shifting details of server meshing's evolution, even if the sim's conceptual underpinnings have remained the same. As for Mr Beausejour, he's CTO now, right? I expect him or Tony Z to update us as soon as they have something to announce. Hamlet.
Hamlet would be very curious to know why in 1000 years from when his character was around, that it was taking people with magic beams 5 hours to load a C2. Said it elsewhere, but fork drivers of modern warehouses can load or unload 52 pallets from a truck in 20 -30 minutes. That would be similar timing to a freelancer or corsair or cutty since they only have room for a single fork at a time like semi trucks. A C2 holds much more cargo, but is also a very wide ramp. Should be able to get 4-6 forks wide at the front and the back to complete the task in roughly the same amount of time it takes a single fork to unload a single freelancer. What is that old riddle, if it takes 1 person 20 minutes to unload 52 pallets, how long does it take 10 people to unload 520 pallets? Also, no truck driver I have ever met loads or unloads his loads. They always use autoload. I would love to see CIG tell one of those truck drivers that it will be a 5 hour wait till their truck is loaded and that they should just go take a nap and come back in 5 hours. I know it is to just force people to hand load, but we have been doing that since physical cargo was introduced and it works remarkably well, snapping to grids and other crates. Not sure why that would be the focus of the new patch.
Cargo is a new time sink. Your conclusion to just use another ship is valid, but also forces people to buy ships. People with a cutty starter pack have 1 ship, that can do cargo missions but they will have to sit and twiddle their thumbs for auto loading. Curious to know how long it will take to autoload a cutty.
The scary news is that Tony is no longer with CIG, the more horrifying news is that he's in a legal battle with them. Either case would explain why he's been silent for so long and the latter case could cripple the entire project.
I think it's pretty obvious what happened. Quantum became so complex, it gained sentience and sucked Tony Zurovec into its virtual world.

While they did say they watched creator vids, don't hurt your arm patting yourself on the back. I did truck8ng long haul for 10 years, most of it running my own truck. That entire SCL was basically logistics 101. It's quite literally space "trucking" lol.

Yes, miners don't have to wait for their refining jobs to be completed and can carry on mining, but truckers do one run and then their ship gets locked out for hours... not a fair comparison. I'm neither, but I can understand the frustration. I would be annoyed as hell if my combat ship got stuck restocking ammo for 5 hours after a couple of bounty missions.

I believe Tony Z has been put into cryostasis so that there is at least one member of the original dev team who is still alive when Star Citizen 1.0 finally goes live in 2112.... ahh to cryo-sleep, perchance to dream.... ay, there’s the rub - for in this sleep of death what dreams may come… Hamlet of course ;)
Well Hamlett ... Anyway i dont care what the system is named or what color the ducks have but only that star citzen will get a life dynamic econmoy to prevent crowding of routes and generate intresting moments in my long hauls. Honestly if it calculated all in the backend and we just see random ships moving about or if the ships we see moving about actually have a influence on the cargo will only matter if the loss of a few ships will create a difference in the economy.
Didn't Jared explain very plainly that he only kept calling 'Star Sim' "Quantum" out of habit due to the nake change being so recent?

When I first joined, Tony was this mystical Wizard of Oz type technician who I knew nothing about, but heard mythical tales about. I just hope this isn't some revenge Hamlet tale now with wither Tony or CIG holding things hostage and the players are worse for it.

I am not suprised to be honest. They couldnt hit the 3.23 deadline and they had an extra month+ and hangars still dont really work well lol But with people actually starting to test maybe ina nother month it will be worth releasing or we will get the standard we usually get....

I’m guessing Tony Z is gone and left for the same reason Todd P did. CIG wanted senior staff to move to the UK and they said no f’ing way am I moving there. I don’t blame them either. Having said that, I have no confidence in those that are left. They have 700mil now and no motivation to do anything except animating pretty pictures….

Quantum are the bots, Not the trade routes or quests / Cargo missions. The bots are what CIG can use for those. And for many other things. Quantum are the X variables used in the equations, Not the equations themselves or how CIG creates the Equations for any reason they need.

Tony Z is the dude they trot out when they need some pie-in-the-sky idea to get the whales to salivate. Most of the things Tony has spoken about have never made it into the game.
I really hope no one is under the delusion that Tony's Quanta system will be implemented at the fidelity his months long prepared, money drumming presentation would have us believe it was.

Your physicalized "node" approach (as I understand it) is lacking in that it is sterile of the living, breathing Universe philosophy. I'd much prefer to substitute your node with an NPC Organization or sub-Org corporate entity (essentially acting as a command & control node). NPC Orgs can then overlap in an area thereby giving unique purpose to each activity. The NPC-required EvR Calculator concept defines efficiency so trade routes will form organically and remains constrained by economics which is required in a living, breathing Universe.
I don't believe "He who shall not be named" is still with the company. I might very well be wrong...but until I see "He who shall not be named," I'm going to assume he's gone.

Supposedly he has been working on this for 10 years, and nobody has seen anything tangible that isn't a marketing presentation.
It would be a fine reason to suddenly shift gears, and restructure the company if the person developing the foundational tech of the entire economy got axed or left and the alternative was telling backers the game would need to wait a couple extra years while somebody tried to sort it out.
