Very interesting and useful, thanks. Champions is the easiest to get into, but for me the Arkham Horror Card Game (2-handed) is the game I enjoy/appreciate the most.
I really appreciate that not every game on this list is a $200 big box game. The smaller games appeal to me because they are more affordable, generally play quicker, are easier to learn, and are portable. I'm looking forward to 20 Strong when it is available. I think I will pick up a Button Shy game, for Northwood, and Under Falling Skies from your list here. Another great video, thanks!
I stumbled on a late pledge for 2023 buttonshy games on gamefound last night, they had some fan favorites being reprinted you could get for a little cheaper then directly from webstore. I picked up a couple as a first time buyer too after watching a button shy play thru of Foster the Meeple.
Mageknight... I haven't tabled this (the physical version, I play it on TableTop Sim about once a month) in a long time but, this was the game that changed everything for me and really got me into board gaming. Call me sentimental, but I'll never get rid of my copy.
I only ditched the box from ultimate and fit everything in a small sneaker box. Too much unnecessary place. I wont ever sell it so no reason to keep the big box 😂
Interesting. I’ve been two-handing games for years as a way to play solo, and I cannot express the extent to which I DESPISE Mage Knights! To me, it’s a soulless, dead-eyed algorithm reskinned with the most generic of fantasy cliches. It killed Eurogames for years for me. Thankfully, now that I’m soloing Empires of the Void 2, I’m back in love with Eurogame mechanics again.
Nice list! Calico and Cascadia are my solo/2 player games as well. Rove, Food Chain Island, and Wild Rivers are currently my favorites from ButtonShy although I got more coming. For Northwood! Is such a delight game. I often role play the conversations LOL Mage Knigh and Marvel Champions for sure! ❤ The ones I have enjoyed solo as well are: Maquis Warp’s Edge The Bloody Inn Roll Player Hadrians’ Wall Nusfjord Legacy of Yu Dwellings of Eldervale Architects of the West Kingdom
Wow.. I'm shocked Isofarian Guard isn't on this list. The way you talked about it in your 5 campaign game comparison made it sound like it was outstanding and made for single player.
Too Many Bones and Spirit Island are both great picks! Final Girl and Bullet are sorely missed on the list, but I know they didn't land with you too well. Possibly also Hoplomachus Victorum, but I'm hoping the new content helps reduce the grind.
LCG actually stands for Living Card Game, but I get the confusion especially for a coop one. I think LCG was a more meaningful branding for the competitive games.
I played Spirit island two handed solo for my first (and so far only) game. I have never felt more exhausted mentally after playing a boardgame in all my life, and i've played ASL solo! Its a great game but almost has that mage knight quality for me where i might only play it once or twice a year lol
I honestly loved Marvel Champions, it was my number 1 solo-game for a full year. But I eventually realized I only enjoyed playing new content, so I sold it. Instead TMB is my absolute number one solo-game. I can replay every character against every Tyrant and still enjoy the game. So while the MC-system is extremely fun, TMB is more suitable to me personally.
Someone created a campaign for Mageknight that is outstanding (on BGG). This may tip the scale for you to keep it out and play multiple games in a row.
I recently got under falling skies. When I played it co-op with my husband we would take turns putting the dice on the mat but we weren't allowed to talk to each other. It was fun trying to parse out what strategy the other was trying to achieve and align with it. I find when I've played co-op games, one person becomes the one that tells everyone else what to do. So we have a rule of not talking during the other persons turn and having a time limit at the start of each round to strategize. Ever since we implemented it co-op games have become so much more fun and challenging!
7th continent remains my #1... hopefully 7th citadel will make both of our top lists in a year or two! Imperium classics/ legends and Gaia Project are probably my #2/3... I'm a sucker for asymmetry clearly! But despite missing those, there's still some great games on your list and it's made me even more excited to receive Unsettled and 20 Strong. Hope they both arrive here soon!
My "all time" list is definitely different from yours. My "most recent" favorite solo game list does contain a couple that are on your list, but as we're two different people, and I don't get prototype games, that is to be expected. Good list, all the same. Thanks.
Spirit Island at 3-4 is great if you have players who can work together, going from being completly overwhelmed to pulling off a combo that almost wipes the island clean is fantastic. But solo is also solid. That along with Mage Knight and Iron Helm are my favorites for solo play right now.
Great picks and going to review those that I haven't really dug into prior. Most recently I picked up Dorfromantik at Gen Con and that one has been swallowing up my solo time. One of those games that notes could be played at 6 but feel like it works best at 1 (removing that possible alpha player) and at best something to play along with my kiddos. It opens up more to the game for each iteration and grows very well. Thanks for the list!
I'm alternating between Hoplomachus Victorum & Mage Knight for the number 1 spot. 3rd would be Robinson Crusoe followed closely behind by Space Empires 4x Solo Scenarios. Then Legendary Encounters Alien (2 handed), Clash of Cultures Civilizations (GamezMadeEZ Solo Variant) & Spirit Island.
Have you tried ‘Dawn of the Zeds’? Been following your channel for a few years and don’t think I have ever heard you mention it? Also, Oathsworn is great solo, although I appreciate that it may not be the way you play it 👍
Mage Knight is great. As are TMB Undertow and Marvel Champions. Your issue for Mage knight is because you are a reviewer. I only own 15 games, half of which are solo / coop. the rules are not an issue for me as i play mage knight at least once monthly. TMB and mage Knight have spoiled me as I only have so much time and won't buy a game unless it can compete with the games I already own. Will pick up Unsettled as it seems it can compete. Thanks
I’m happy you put unsettled on the list. I have been wanting to buy this game for a long time, but didn’t since I don’t have too many people I could play it with. So now I know I finally can 😂
Mage Knight and Too Many Bones are definitely two of my favorites!! I think I’m falling in love with Voidfall as well now… The rest all sound really good too, I just haven’t played them.
Hey, I also like Calico solo a little more than Cascadia... a lot of others are the other way around. I feel the puzzles of the scenarios for Calico are tougher than Cascadia's scenarios.

Mmmmm glad to see Spirit Island so high up there! Probably at least 2/3 of my games of SI have been solo and it really does hold up. It's really the only game I play solo but I should branch out and try a few of these other ones. A lot of times I don't like when multiplayer games have solo modes that warp a bunch of stuff but it seems like the games on this list avoid that largely
I see Deliverance on the shelf. I am absolutely loving it right now. Legacy of Yu is another one that blew my expectations away. I just wanted to mention those while fully endorsing Too Many Bones as #1. When it hits the table it stays there for weeks at a time.
I haven’t tried Spirit Island solo. It wasn’t my favorite in a group, but mostly because of keeping up with other gods and synergies and stuff so I’m excited to try it. I’m getting ready to do a 20 strong video myself having just received the pre-order with my new rig that I just got working correctly the other day.
@@BoardGameCo I was teasing since I’m brand new to the scene - I have a few more designs I’m cooking up and hope to have out before and be worthy of your next top ten solo vid is all I was getting at. Always a treat to watch your videos, nearly always adding new games to my list - cheers!
For northwood is really fantastic! my no 1 at the moment is from the Oniverse Stellarion. In general this series pulled me completely into solo gaming. I love it to try and to combine the expansions every time and it is great to have a nice puzzle experience.
Need to try the solo mode for Deliverance(played two handed, but not with intercessor), but my current number is Marvel Champions, because I can enjoy it in "true solo". I like Death May die, Journeys in Middle Earth, and need to table the new Descent, but these are usually required to play more than one character. I don't mind it, but the loss of focus can happen easily. Great list BTW
Give a 6-player game of Spirit Island a try, pick a benevolent spirit, and just embrace the beautiful and glorious chaos. It's not something I'd do every game night, but it's absolutely wonderful. One of my very favorite gaming experiences was playing as Shifting Memory of Ages, and straight up Nuking my board off the island with "Cast Down into the Briny Deep" so I could focus on helping one of the newer players on his board.
I'd love to play Spirit Island with six players, in the mythical universe where I have five friends who want to spend the time, and all of us have nothing else to do, except spend our days sitting around playing board games.
Too many bones is a masterclass in game design. I really hope elderscrolls can live up to it because burncycle and hoplomachus victorum and a significant degree of magnitude worse than TMB.
Man I've been folowing you a long time, but I always wanted more pictures of the games on your videos. I know it is a lot more edition, but I think that it would be awesome
Where is Final Girl, Obsession, Gaia Project, Castles of Burgandy SE, Dune: Imperium, Eldritch Horror, Carnegie, Ark Nova? Well, i have TMB at least from these 10 games.
@@BoardGameCoGotcha. I love it with the Prelude expansion. Any game that you prefer solo and has similar variability, hand management, and engine building?
You just HAD to bring up Unsettled. Came out at a time when I had already backed a bunch of games and couldn't justify the expense. My #1 regretted missed Gamefound campaign.
Tenares. I bought it on Alex's advice. I've still not played it, as the painting of every piece is going to take me until beyond Christmas. I don't know if I EVER want to play it. I just want to continue painting it.
Mage Knight is the #1 game that I really want to like, and don't. Every time I pull it out, I think it looks so good, spend (at least) 30 minutes getting it set up, and then don't like playing it.
Getting "For Northwood!" because of this. Great list, can't argue with Marvel Champions/Spirit Island. I am going to investigate some Chip Theory Games a bit more now.
I have too many bones and Tanaras. I am getting the latest unsettled KS. I put my number 1 as marvel/x-men United. My number 2 is the shadows of brimstone collection. Since I spent months organizing, assembling and painting. When I finally got down to the campaign. I’m having a blast. Just find it really hard. But that’s ok, I have a lot of characters, so I don’t mind the character death and replacing them. Through 3 missions. My sorceress, Samarai and jargano native all died. Only my cowboy has survived through all the missions. Likely because it stays back using his lasso and guns.
leo and coraquest have been 2 great ones, I'll need to try dodo riding i have that but haven't played it yet. For tiny turbo cars is the collector/deluxe edition worth it?
I love spirit island but my only concern is that victories can be very anticlimatic. You can be getting destroyed and battling then at one point you just say oh I won.
Would be way cooler if you showed off the games set up or some footage of how it plays in future videos. As it stands right now, this list really means nothing outside of the people who are already familiar with these games and just want to see a "top 10".
I agree it would be cooler, sadly the amount of time it takes to do that kind of thing properly is just a very big investment. On the other hand, I completely disagree that this isn't useful unless you're familiar with the games.
I like Summit at one player, playing two handed with different climbers. Playing one handed is possible but very difficult at higher difficulty levels.
I don't have as much of a collection as you, so I'll mention my top 5 at the moment. 5. The Witcher: Old World (With Expansions) 4. ISS Vanguard 3. Marvel United 2. Cthulhu DMD 1. Robinson Crusoe I prefer Marvel United and CDMD with others, but I have so much fun playing them solo that they deserve a spot on my list. Thanks for sharing your list! I'm really excited to get my copy of 20 Strong. Maybe that will move up the ranks for me soon.
1000000% summed up Spirit Island perfectly.. always feel like it’s impossible to win then things turn.. it’s amazing how it accomplishes this but it happens almost every time
I suspect a reference to the visibility of the box art during the video and on the thumbnail. Which I totally get-it's nice art and good to show! :) Looking forward to getting organized enough that I can start painting Tanares and eventually table it...
Given you put 20 strong on the list, how excited are you for the 20 Strong Tanglewood trilogy? Manny Trembley's art is incredible and I'm looking forward to getting into 20 strong after stupidly deciding to pass on it.
29:18 Then how can you justify putting Unsettled on the list - let alone at the #2 spot, if you haven’t played it enough - and that’s your reason for not including Mage Knight on the list?
The only RUclipsr that I listen to at 0.75x speed 😊
Very interesting and useful, thanks.
Champions is the easiest to get into, but for me the Arkham Horror Card Game (2-handed) is the game I enjoy/appreciate the most.

For Northwood really blew me away. I think it might be impossible to be disappointed with For Northwood. Even the box it comes in is a delight!
Spirit Island at 3-4 (experienced) players is fantastic. The synergy between spirits you get is incredible.
A few solo games I love not on your list: empires of the north, final girls, Arkham lcg and Robinson cursoe.
LCG actually stands for Living Card Game, but I get the confusion especially for a coop one. I think LCG was a more meaningful branding for the competitive games.

Yes! It's excellent, but does run a little long. It was on the short list for this.
How about Terraforming Mars?
While I love that game, if I was ranking a solo, it's lower down
@@BoardGameCoGotcha.
I'm really surprised Legacy of Yu and Halls of Hegra didn't make the list. Did you play those? I'm getting them this month.
You should include pictures of the actual game open or in play so I don't have to Google what they look like.
leo and coraquest have been 2 great ones, I'll need to try dodo riding i have that but haven't played it yet.
I was surprised to not see Bullet on here. Your review was quite positive. Did it fall off for you or just not quite make the cut?
So. Despite the 2 conditions. If you had to put in Tanares adventures, where would it be. Number 1?
What is that Marvel Champions box and where did you get it?
One sharp Joe
Personally, For Northwood offers the best value to volume ratio XD Palm island being second best!
Sodoes Unsettled work solo out of the box or are one of the expansions needed? I've only heard of it being a CoOp game.
You didn’t even show any of the games, just the outer box 😔
Yes, I do a lot of videos and some of the trade-off is that I can't do b-roll for every video
I like Summit at one player, playing two handed with different climbers. Playing one handed is possible but very difficult at higher difficulty levels.
What an amazing solo list, need to check out Tanares but I have too many campaign games to play atm...
I don't have as much of a collection as you, so I'll mention my top 5 at the moment.
5. The Witcher: Old World (With Expansions)
4. ISS Vanguard
3. Marvel United
2. Cthulhu DMD
1. Robinson Crusoe
I prefer Marvel United and CDMD with others, but I have so much fun playing them solo that they deserve a spot on my list.
Thanks for sharing your list! I'm really excited to get my copy of 20 Strong. Maybe that will move up the ranks for me soon.
Sold under falling skies hated it
Marvel champions is on my top 5 for sure
Hooray for Too Many Bones! I LOVE LOVE LOVE it but have not yet played it solo.
1000000% summed up Spirit Island perfectly.. always feel like it’s impossible to win then things turn.. it’s amazing how it accomplishes this but it happens almost every time
Calico was on our sell/cull shelf. I’m moving it to the soli shelf after this video.
I’ve played lots of solo games and was never quite satisfied. Then I found Shadows of Brimstone. It’s brilliant.
TMB is my favorite game as well. I have a solo Lab Rays variant which is really fun. If you’re up to try it sometime let me know.
I cant help & notice Tanares got the most lime light… … …
What do you mean?
I suspect a reference to the visibility of the box art during the video and on the thumbnail. Which I totally get-it's nice art and good to show! :) Looking forward to getting organized enough that I can start painting Tanares and eventually table it...
Given you put 20 strong on the list, how excited are you for the 20 Strong Tanglewood trilogy? Manny Trembley's art is incredible and I'm looking forward to getting into 20 strong after stupidly deciding to pass on it.
sword & sorcery is def in my top 3
Just what I wanted!!!!! 100% with Too Many Bones 👌🏼
Mage Knight is besides Uprising and Spirit Island the best Solo Game. You should play it more often :))
+1 for Uprising
Am I the only one who thinks Too Many Bones is not that hard to learn?
Given the button shy category just wondering, have you played Ragemore?
29:18 Then how can you justify putting Unsettled on the list - let alone at the #2 spot, if you haven’t played it enough - and that’s your reason for not including Mage Knight on the list?
Under 10 still puts it above Mage Knight :)
