I love how Lex got it right immediately! He’s trying very hard to convince himself he’s not in love… because he’s totally in love!
Lex is on another level than Brad. Sorry dude.
@@markbeneventi1972 😂
Yeah, Lex nailed it. When they wrote the song they didn't want to do another "on the nose" love song. So they reversed it. Using layered voices as an instrument was really brilliant.
@@markbeneventi1972
yep
In love but it's over. She left. And, it can't happen again.
Lex is on the ball. The dude’s in love. He’s trying to convince himself he’s not because “big boys don’t cry”.
Lex nailed the meaning of this song. --- IF you have to sing 'I'm not in love' ten thousand times, it mean you ARE in love.
According to something I read, Eric Stewart wanted to see how many ways of saying "I love you" he could come up with, without actually saying the words "I love you".
Yeah, Lex had it. If you’re not in love, one thousand times should be sufficient.
@@j.woodbury412 Exactly, it's the original, "tell me you love me without telling me you love me."
This song is like a variation of "The lady doth protest too much, methinks." Disproportionate denial is a sure sign something is up. :-)
@@erickyoung8331 Yes. Exactly.
What a haunting song. The hypnotic background harmonies are so perfect. An almost tragic tone. A man trying and failing to deny he’s in love and it scares him to feel so vulnerable. Powerful.
Absolutely!! Perfectly stated!
This song was revolutionary for its time. The ethereal sounds in the background that made up the melody were incredibly difficult to create, taking hundreds of hours of cutting tape. This is probably very high on the list of greatest songs ever written... at least in the contemporary sense. There is actually an entire documentary dedicated to this song and how it was made.
Yeah. Basically they wanted to have a choir singing, but they couldn't afford that, so they all were recorded singing certain notes over and over again. They took all of them and created a choir effect. They also asked the secretary to sing the lines "Be quiet. Big boys don't cry." She didn't want to, but they convinced her.
Too bad they didn't listen to the longer version. This is the standard "radio" play version. It cuts off some of the best parts.
@Xenia © a cartoon? Get outta here.
spot on, a high-water mark of pop music, not just in songwriting but also production
Professor of rock did a video on it as well. I can't remember if he interviewed any of them, he usually does.
@@oreally8605 Yes Wasting everyone's time
If there was ever a *"men are from Mars, women are from Venus"* reaction interplay between you two, this was it! :D
Men might be from mars and women might be from venus, but you sound like you're coming from Uranus.
@@rainwaterjoseph4634 You sound experienced
This song is a classic of the highest order. Absolutely brilliant. It is a song of denial. Brings me straight back to the summer of 75. Love it!
...me too Ron...I was 10, but I remember it well
Me long hair , cheesecloth shirts , flares riding around on a Yamaha RD350 , wish I could go back
@@catman2629 I had my “ keep on Truckin “ t shirt
Same here, Ron. Everytime I hear this gem I am instantly transported back in time to that summer so full of love and promise 47 years ago. Time evaporates like smoke, and those years in the rear view mirror sometime seem like they never happened, but I KNOW they did!
My high school graduation. ✌️
Essence of the song is = whispermode to self "Be Quiet, Big Boys don't cry"
So very effective!
Genius
But it’s not “whispermode to self” it’s the voice of the receptionist at the recording studio, supposed to he the girl he’s “not in love” with. She knows.
@@SvenTviking Kathy Redfern.
Lex is right. He's in love and scared shitless. There is a You Tube story that tells how they made the sounds in the background.
It's 100 or so recordings of the band members singing in multi multi multi tiered harmonies all played together.
It's a great video. Made me appreciate what went into the making of this song.
The author of the song says the singer actually isn't in love, that it's not a love song, but I think he got it wrong - songwriters don't always get to decide what the song means to listeners! :)
Lex always knows what a song means. There's no fooling her.🥰💙
"I keep your picture up on the wall. It hides a nasty stain that's lying there" - one of my favorite lyrics ever.
Yeah, nobody seems to laugh at that bit. It's funny, and sums up the song.
But he's not in love. Riiiiigghhhhhhtttt. Sure, Brad.
Brad: "Well if there's a stain on the wall then he had to find the most practical thing at hand to cover it"
Mine too! 💜
I used to wonder what the stain was.
One morning 10cc frontman Eric Stewart was sitting at his kitchen table with his wife of 8 years. When she made the statement. "You don't say 'I love you, enough" his reply was. "If everyday I say. 'I love you darling.' Then the word will lose their meaning." This song is a furthering of his explanation.
Notice one line.
Don't tell your friends about "The two of us".
Your friends are putting things in your head, that they know nothing about. They can't read my mind or know my intentions.
Eric and his wife Gloria have been married for over fifty years.
So he is in love.
The female voice was an afterthought, she's the studio secretary Kathy Redfern.
Written mostly by Stewart as a response to his wife's declaration that he did not tell her often enough that he loved her.
That part always knocked me out when this song was popular. It was like an Easter Egg but for music.
Instead of doing 'just another love song', he took a novel angle.
He's not just in love; he's scared by the depth of his feelings. Unexpected, overwhelming, shocked - it's a great song.
I know Brad takes lyrics literally, but this beyond funny.
Lex knows he’s in love but he’s in denial !! 😜😂
He has no concept of figurative language haha
It is a male thing,@@rong2912
The desperate last “I’m not in Love” settled it.
Beyond funny? It's worrying 😂
He’s in love and that’s the genius of the song. He’s trying to convince himself he isn’t. One of the absolute best hits of the 70’s.
And Lex is right, he's definitely in love but refuses to admit it to himself.
He’s in love but trying to protect his heart at the same time. “Big boys don’t cry”, “Big boys don’t cry”, “Big boys don’t cry”.
Brad couldn't have been farther off the mark on this one. Read the lyrics again. Lexi nailed it.
As usual
She's ALWAYS tuned in.
Perhaps Brad is on the spectrum. It isn't his fault that he doesn't pick up on subtleties, even though in this case, the real meaning isn't very subtle.
I think Brad would understand it better after hearing it a second time. I am sure.
@@TranquiloTrev Agreed, but that would be the case for all of us. Right? I've been watching Brad and Lex for quite a while now and sometimes I think they are playing to the camera as two characters to gain a larger audience and engage those that already watch. That might be factual, IDK, but Brad consistently misses the point despite focusing, perhaps too much, on the lyrics, which leaves me to think picking up on human subtleties is not easy for him.
Lex, you nailed it. You are a very smart, intuitive listener of music! So many RUclipsrs totally missed the irony in the lyrics and you understood instantly.
As 70's era soft rock goes, this resides at the pinnacle. A timeless classic.
This was number 1 in the UK charts for weeks back in the 70s, we all loved it both boys and girls, I think I had just left school at 16 and gone out into the big-wide-would and was looking for LOVE, they had there own studio in Stockport, and thats why they played around with new sounds, the girls voice on the track, she was on the phones at the studio. That studio is long gone now, but the building and what 10cc made there was the only big thing to come out of Stockport, so they made the building into a listed building, so it can never be taken down, folks from all over the world have there photo taken out side
The 70's was such a great decade for music.
It had EVERYTHING , from this to disco - and anything in between
Music's golden age!
It was until disco arrived. 😆
@@johnharrid5729 yeah but even disco is preferable to what's going on now
@@johnharrid5729 but making fun of disco was great. There's always an after-birth.
"big boys don't cry"
(show their feelings)
Lex totally gets it
Lex nailed it. He's in love. CLEARLY. This song was remarkable for the day. You guys should hit another wonderful band: XTC.
Mayor of Simpleton - XTC
Definitely. He doth protest too much and all that ;)
Dear God by XTC
Complicated game.....
@Richard Wilson I'd personally throw in Are You Receiving Me? and Science Friction too.
Lots to choose from at any rate!
This reflects a difference between British/Commonwealth and American culture. Rather than being up front about how he feels, the truth is being reflected by the words; each time he denies being in love, he digs the hole more deeply. That's what gives the song its power.....
A man trying everything he can to convince himself he's not in love and failing miserably.
Nicely put.
We should all have a love like that...
The sound you're talking about is their 4 voices layered 8 times each (if I remember right), so it sounds like 32 voices all together. Super cutting edge for the time
He's in love, so don't forget it ... . I'm with Lex on this one. He's just scared of admitting his feelings.
I love that look Lex gave Brad when he said I’ll keep your picture on the wall.
You hit the radio version. The full 6 minute version is even better. Great song and yes he is in love. He is just denying it.
Yea...it cut a part out...wtf...
Yeah. The radio versions cut off the best parts! Rare Earth's song (I Know) I'm Losing You was originally 11 minutes but the radio version is 3 minutes & 30 seconds!!!
Thank you. I thought this felt cut down. Going to listen to the album version now.
I first heard this in "the virgin suicides" movie. Great soundtrack! All kinds of 70s goodness.
Brad & Lex, you'll love their "The Things We Do For Love" and "Dreadlock Holiday"!! edit - very interesting recording and production story behind this song. see it here - ruclips.net/video/3oxe4mlsQos/видео.html
"Rubber Bullets" ain't too bad either! 😉👍
how they got that ethereal wall of sound is a story worthy of review in itself.. it is the band. .and if he wasn't in love that picture on the wall would be on the floor
He is in love, the story is Eric Stewart saying to his wife that if he kept saying "I Love You" over and over, it wouldn't mean anything even though he did love her.
That look from Lex at the line "I keep your picture up on the wall" 😂😂 I TOLD YOU SO!!
I know that's not what they intended but I can't get off my head the fact that it's a song about being in denial with being in love with someone very close and dear to you…
Lex always gets the meanings of the songs. He is in denial and trying to talk himself out of the fact that he IS is love.
Give a listen the Lee Michaels "do you know what I mean". it's a super fun song.
For the background vocals, they recorded hundreds of single vocal notes, combined them into separate chords that were all played back simultaneously during recording, and individual chords were played when needed by bringing up the faders on the tracks that contained the chord they needed, basically playing the multi track recorder like an instrument.
Wow. That sounds like an incredible amount of trouble, for that sound.
@@paulkane7771 Well, they are still playing it and talking about it 47 years later, so I guess it was worth it.
@@paulkane7771
It was totally worth it
Wow, I was so young when this song was on the radio. It was played A LOT. Flashback alert! This is what Pink Floyd would sound like if they did love songs...:-)
Same here, took me right back to eating breakfast and this was playing on radio. Had to look up year of song, i was only about 4 or 5.
Yes and
I meant yes absolutely
Although I love "love songs" and this one in particular, being a huge Floyd Fan, thankfully they never did (but Syd in the first album) any love songs and stayed with more cerebral ideas....
Oooooh Babe.... Why are you running awaaaaaay ?
I think Lex makes me realise for the first tonight on this legendary song : The guy is dame in love! indeed "big boys don't cry!"
Brad, your harsh with the BG's! :()
How they came up with 10CC is something else.
Well it did actually come from a nocturnal dream.
I have to say, I love your show. I've been alone for 5 years now, and you 2 made it so much more memorable. Thanks, and stay loving !!!
Lex got it right go back and listen again he's trying to convince himself
I have loved this song since it first dropped! There was a time in my life I’d hear this song in my dreams!
This band is "crazy talented"!
So many "cool sounds"🤗
Brings me right back to the AM 70S radio days👍
You got that right. Eric Stewart, Graham Gouldman, Kevin Godley, and Lol Creme.
He's desperately trying to convince himself and others that he's not in love, but everything else he says tells the opposite story...takes me right back to the mid 70s.
Finally you got to 10CC. A great tune for 1976. Personal favorite tune of theirs for me is called Good Morning Judge, I know Lex would love it because it rocks.
@Robert Millar: Charted May 1975 here in the UK.
Brad Lex got you again. She even knew before the part about her picture on the wall. Sometimes you just have to admit whan your wrong. This guy did not want to admit that he was in love. Lex has a way of getting the message , in her own quirky way. You two are great together. KEEP ROCKIN 🎸
Brad, He is in love!!
When I was a kid and heard this, I didn't know any better and just thought what he said was what he meant. I mostly dug the instrumental parts anyway.
Then, probably in my 40s, I heard that song again and instantly realized "Me thinks thou dost protest too much". It was obvious he was trying to convince himself, and her, that there was no "love" involved, and thus no commitment would be forthcoming on his part.
What a great love song! Still a "Masterpiece".
He's in denial of still being in love with his former lover. Brad, listen to the lyrics, Lex nailed it.
One of my favorites, the vocals were recorded at 120 times that was the four people doing 32 vocal tracks
10CC are worth looking at they had some crackin hits, "Donna", "I'm Mandy Fly Me", "Wall Street Shuffle". One that is possibly not played on air now a lot is "Dreadlock Holiday". possibly considered a bit iffy, but like "Rubber Bullets" a very good track. A very underrated group.
love dreadlock holiday, a love letter to jamaica
They're awesome. I had that record when I was 12. Being 12 was also awesome. I'd like to do it again someday.
Lex is right, he's in love but he doesn't want to admit it. The guys recorded their voices and looped them on tapes which were then controlled by a keyboard. Brilliant.
These guys were recording /performing masters...I got 2 of thier CD's, I can play 'em over and over and they still please my ear
10cc is an incredibly inventive band of their time. When the foursome broke up 2 of the members formed the duo Godley/Creme and did some great music too. This is a very complex song that they had to put together from 1,000's of recordings. The Whoo-Whoos come from the fact that each member had to record their vocal parts at least 17 times to be melded together to make those lush sounds. He's definitely in love.
No way Brad - he's madly in love but not wanting to be. The sounds were them singing.
Nah, he loved his wife. She complained that he didn't say it as much.
IMHO, one of the 10 most interesting song structures and arrangements ever recorded....to this very day.
It is one of my favorite songs of all time. Yes, he is in love.
He's trying to get his mind to over ride what's in his heart, a deed that's futile from the onset ☺️♥️
Lex nailed it... he is in love but don't want to accept / admit it.
He accepts it He's writing about his wife
I remember hearing this on the Radio in July 75, it even sounded ok on the tiny 4 inch speaker. The "Be Quiet, Big Boys don't cry" was done by Secretary, who thought they were nuts for asking her to record it.
Yeah, he's sprung, and does not want to look weak and admit it. There is an old axiom "Whoever confesses 1st loses", which basically means if he said he loved her 1st, she has all the power.
LOL Listen closer, Brad.
He's totally in love but won't admit it.
!0CC was a Manchester [England] group who had a number of hit in the seventies and eighties. It a song about denying his love for someone and possibly lying to himself about his feelings. The complex sound was produced by developing a series of multi tracks, at their own Manchester studio.
Stockport not Manchester.
@@jamesoneill5070 Cheers James.
10cc’s Dreadlock Holiday and The things we do for love are AWSOME too.
Great song, the production of this was groundbreaking at the time!
The synth sounds was all thier voices looped over many loops then manipulated to create that sound. Ingenious
one of the groups ii grew up with, they where fantastic in concert, one extremely tight group of musicians who were all on it . if you get time listen to "feel the benefit" live by them on superb piece if music
He is so look in love he can't even face it. The girl will rule his head and heart probably forevermore. One of my all time favorite song ever made. It will never grow old.
The idea for the song came from singer Eric Stewart saying to his wife that if he kept saying "I Love You" over and over, it wouldn't mean anything even though he did love her. He recalled to The Guardian:
"I met this gorgeous girl called Gloria at Halifax town hall. I was 18. She was 16. Three years later, we got married. A few years after that, Gloria told me: 'You don't say 'I love you' much anymore.' I told her that, if I said it all the time, it would sound glib. But I started wondering how I could say it without using those actual words. So 'I'm not in love' became a rhetorical conversation with myself - and then a song.(From Songfacts)
Yes, the production of their voices in the background was cutting edge for that time. It was pure brilliance. There are RUclips's that explain how this song was created.
This song was created from a wife saying to her husband..."You don't say 'I love you' much anymore." It's a love song. And the couple are in love.
And the couple - lead singer Eric Stewart who wrote the song and his wife Gloria - are still married after more than 50 years
Love your channel and the diversity in what you select. This song is a phenomenal classic.
Wow bringing me back to my childhood, such great memories back then 🤔
I remember being in 7th grade and in the halls between classes, the radio was playing...when I heard this song I took it for what it was.... I'm just not in love, it means what it means
The spoken line "Be quiet, big boys don't cry' explains it all.
definitely in love. doesn't want to admit it. afraid of the rejection.
This reminds me of how Brian Wilson artfully writes one of the world's greatest love songs by starting with, "I may not always love you..."
I've never studied the lyrics, not since I first heard this song when it was new, but I will say that I believe it is about somebody resisting love
1975 uk. Lasting memories. A Long long summer, the heat and droughts and 10cc, no1 in the charts, blaring from radios in every back garden. Fantastic times.
Spot on,he wrote it cuz his wife said he doesn't say i love you enough...and that was a synth mix of 48 human voices in the backround!
He's clearly in love, but afraid of it. He's trying to convince himself he's not. This is a beautiful love song!
The amount of times I've got drunk to this song over the years.
This was one of my favorite songs in high school, and I'd wait all day listening to my transistor radio just to hear it.
Best part of the reaction is Lex's look after "I keep your picture up on the wall".
sounds like one of those tunes you'd wake up in the night around 1AM hangin with your love or just a passing fad.
Lex is the vibe catcher. There are things that can be felt that may be difficult to explan but make complete sense.
Lex, Beauty, Brains and Perspicacity. A triple threat.!! You're absolutely right he's madly in love with her.
It is layered singing (their voices played on top of this voices...etc). Song is one of a kind. Eric Stewart, the lead singer, wrote this for his wife who said he doesn't say he loves her enough.
I first heard this song in the early 2000s and my boyfriend at the time said the same thing as Brad.I agree with Lex LOL too funny
Lex was straight on to him 🤣 This gorgeous song was classic 'slow dance' material for us kids in the mid 70s.
You hit the nail on the head, Lex! It's a song about being an "I'm never gonna settle down" kind of bachelor who's fallen in love -- and trying to fight off having to redefine himself and his priorities. It shows the discomfort of discovering that he's not who he thought he was.
From 1975. I remember when it was released. As a teenager I guess we never much thought about the lyrics but liked it just fine anyway.
Lex got it right. 10cc is underrated band. They have so many good songs. Dreadlock Holiday is another good one.
One of the best songs of my youth brings back hot summer days in the park playing handball drinking beers!👍🏻❤️
OMG Brad! OBVIOUSLY IN LOVE! "big boys don't cry" "I keep your picture upon the wall" "so don't you ask me to give it back" "you'll wait a long time for me" "It's just a silly phase I'm going through" etc.!
