Eric Stewart, the writer and singer of this song explained this about the song................. "At that time my wife and I had been married about eight years," Eric Stewart recalls, "and she asked me 'Why don't you say "I love you" more often?' I had this crazy idea in my mind that repeating those words would somehow degrade the meaning, so I told her 'Well, if I say every day "I love you, darling, I love you, blah, blah, blah," it's not gonna mean anything eventually.' That statement led me to try to figure out another way of saying it, and the result was that I chose to say 'I'm not in love with you,' while subtly giving all the reasons throughout the song why I could never let go of this relationship. Eric and his wife Gloria are still married after more than 50 years( but I don't think it'll last, "It's just a silly phase he's going through.") P.S. The girl who whispers " Big Boys Don't Cry." was their secretary in the recording studio and they realised that her voice was perfect for those spoken words.
10cc are a great English rock band from the 70's. This group was super talented as every member was a multi-instrumentalist, singer, writer & producer. "I'm Not In Love" was their biggest hit in 1975 but they had other songs such as "The Things We Do For Love", "Rubber Bullets", "Dreadlock Holiday", "The Dean & I", "The Wall Street Shuffle", "Silly Love", "Life Is A Minestrone", "Art For Art's Sake", "I'm Mandy, Fly Me" etc.
10cc are an incredibly intelligent band that straddle rock and pop. They are very talented Musicians and Writers their albums are brilliant! A great live band!
The background "music" in this song is not strings, horns, or woodwinds, it is each band member singing "ahhh" too every note in the song, then multiplied dozens of times to achieve over 600 vocals that sound like background music.
True. If you are familiar with the "mellotron" and how it works, then you could imagine the tapes in such a "keyboard" benig replaced by those voice recordings. But that's not how they did it. They used their freaking big mixing console and overdubbing to build this effect. That must have been tedious, laborious, work and only determination and artistic vision could have gotten them to the end-result.
No Mellotron, No Vako Optigon, 4 years before the release of the Fairlight CMI and digital sampling technology. Just raw talent, incredible production, imaginative use of multitrack tape recorders and a great song that stands the test of time as it approaches half a century since I first heard it.
The band members spent a couple of weeks in the studio singing different chords in harmony, which were then used to provide the layered vocals you hear in the background. No, that wasn't synthesizer, it was human voices harmonizing. And it was all recorded, engineered and mastered on analog tape, before the digital age. Amazing production.
Hi, Girls! This song was such a monster smash back in the day, that the BBC did a documentary on it entitled " The Making Of I'm Not In Love By 10cc"! Please pull that up, then you'll really appreciate the love that was poured into this song! God Bless!
I went to see them live in concert in 1975 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Hopefully I will see them again for the 50 year tour later this year!! Happy Days!
Yes it was 1975. I was almost 20 years old. I was a United States Marine on Okinawa. My girlfriend broke up with me. I was heart broken 💔. To this day when I hear this song I think of Terri, from Lexington, KY, USA
One of the most underrated bands èver. Saw them live 6 months ago and they were absolutely outstanding!! These guys are real musicians!! Great reaction as usual guys. Take care. Best wishes from the UK.
10cc were a British group who had major success in the 1970's. "I'm Not In Love" was their biggest hit which went to #2 on the pop charts. Excellent song. Their other top 10 hit that you will also enjoy is "The Things We Do For Love".
That's because it was mid 70's, and yes memories with emotions ! You two look like heart breakers ! How many men are listing to songs like this from your past ?
It truly is a love song. Straight up 100%, no strings attached except for sarcasm. He's not denying his love for her nor is he trying to deny it. He's simply being sarcastically funny in professing how deep his love is for her, because his girl knows and loves his sarcastic wit. 🙂
Written by band members Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman, Stewart came up with the idea for the song after his wife of eight years asked him why he didn't say "I love you" more often.
I remember this song so very well from my sophomore year in high school. And yes, it does bring back memories. They achieved the background voices by recording multiple layers of voices on top of each other. Enya did this frequently later on with many of her songs. When they needed a female voice to say, “Big boys don’t cry,” they got an admin in the office of the studio by the name of Cathy to record that part. Yes, he puts her picture over a stain in the wall when he knows he could very well put a picture of a giraffe or a moose there.😁
10cc are very underrated and tended to fly under the radar for most people despite most people knowing at least one of their song but not knowing who sang it.
10cc were a very influential group from Manchester who sold millions of records and made brilliant videos. They operated out of Strawberry Studios in Stockport that I helped build.
They went to a lot of trouble to make it look live but in reality they are singing along with the original recorded version (albeit edited). It would have been difficult to reproduce live back in the day as there were 48 voices and tape loops involved to achieve the aah effect, also Katy Redfern did the original big boys don't cry whispers.. But I love 10cc especially 'I'm Mandy Fly Me', 'Art for Art's Sake' and 'Don't Hang up'. Glad you girls loved it..
Innovative all superb musicians and extremely creative typicaly British, music of my yoof 1975 I was 20, a song that brings back the thought you may have let "" the one" get away many years later... I always think of one girl in particular
Fantastic beautiful song!!!! Relaxing and takes you to a different world. By the way Gap ladies, that breezy sound you hear in the background that sounds like a keyboard synthesizer, that's actually multiple human voices that all the guys in the band recorded on different tracks and then stacked on top of each other many times. And then the engineer raised and lowered the volume on different tracks to create that beautiful sound. Pretty cool stuff for that time period. Oh, and the whispering "big boys don't cry" part is actually a woman that worked at the recording studio (I think she was the studio receptionist). They asked her to come into the studio and sing that part.
10cc recorded themselves individually singing 'Ahh' for every note they needed, and bounced the tracks many times to build up that incredible sound. It was controlled by pushing up the faders, making the mixer into an instrument itself. Great short documentary on how they did it. I love 10cc - they actually had their own recording studio, and the production was immaculate. Too bad the two really funny and experimental guys left. They went on to produce several very interesting albums, and were very active making videos for other groups to be shown on MTV. (Duran Duran, Herbie Hancock, and even George Harrison.) The other two took the direction of a more commercial pop sound, and worked with Paul McCartney. Amazing talent all around. Very nice to see your smiles at this unforgetable song.
10cc are Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley & Lol Cream. The multi layed choir was achieved by the band members recording themselves over & over. When the band split Godley & Cream did a few albums on their own & went into video production. Graham Gouldman joined Andrew Gold to form the short lived band Wax who had a minor UK hit with a song you could try Bridge To My Heart. The song is all about someone so in love.
Hi Gap girls, Oh yes the stirring memories from 1975 that this distinctive song provides for me, I did vote for it so I'm really happy you were able to react to it. I like your new intro music too. 😊
I can sing it in my sleep. My boyfriend in 1977 was British and driving me to the ferry so I could go home. He played this for me in his smart red car and asked me to listen. Well had we stayed together I wouldn't have had my beautiful daughter:)
This song was groundbreaking in the way it was recorded. If you want something 10cc that's different, try Dreadlock Holiday. Also, you may want to look at a video called the making of I'm not in Love. You'll find out what the background sound is, it will surprise you. This song came about because the writers wife asked, "Why don't you say say you love me?". He wrote this song instead.
A sense of decorum stops me disclosing the etymology of the band's name, but it's fairly well-known in the UK. On a serious note: I love your reactions for the in depth discussions of both the songs and the music. My favourite reaction channel.
This was the short 4-minute version of a 7-minute masterpiece but needed HEADPHONES to really appreciate it. One of the greatest Groups that ever came out of England. 4 musical Jewish genius's from Manchester., who were very big in The UK, in particular then. The incredible thing about these Guys is all their songs are different from each other. They, painstakingly, produced that sound that took an eternity to create. Hey ! Mum /Mom!. What is with the spoiler ? lol, It would have been fun seeing your daughter decide whether he was in denial.:)
This was recorded at Strawberry Studios in Stockport, England. My wife used to see the band coming into the place she worked in the area regularly. Nobody ever said anything. 10cc were a "comedy" band, or maybe a "satire" band. This was one of their more straightforward songs which came from their album "The Original Soundtrack" which wasn't the original soundtrack of anything. 😄
Yes, from the Stockport area, south Greater Manchester area UK. Same as the Hollies, but the Hollies were a generation earlier, 60s, Beatles era. Great songs and an underrated group.
10cc were innovators. that haunting background sound you hear throughout the song are their voices just singing "ahhhh" over and over again in different keys recorded multiple times and overdubbed. There is an actual tv documentary on them and this is covered in it. They had their own studio. The 70's were as prolific as the 60's were with new bands and sounds some bands even made up from remnants of older 60's bands. I haven't seen you react to one such band yet. Electric Light Orchestra. lovingly referred to as ELO is one such band. Multiple great songs. "Telephone Line" "All Around The World" "Evil woman" and "Mr. Blue Sky" are just 4.
Just subscribed. Because you are sympathetic and it is a joy to see you enjoy the songs that I have been in love with for over half a century. Regards from Paul, Netherlands
The lead singer on this song( they all sing lead on other tracks ) Eric Stewart, used to be in a band called The Mindbenders in the 60's and wrote and sang "Groovy kind of love" which Phil Collins covered later on. The Bass player, Graham Gouldman wrote lots of hits for The Hollies and The Yardbirds, who were famous British bands of the 60's.10CC made some great albums, with very witty lyrics.
When this song played on the radio a lot, it was at a time when I was making big changes in my life (for the better). New job, moved out of my parent's house, moved to another part of the state, greatly expanded my life. This song (and a couple of others) brings me back to that time.
The singer was with The Mindbenders (Game Of Love, A Groovy Kind Of Love) and the one with curly hair wrote many of the Yardbirds hits also The Hollies, Herman's Hermits & The Grassroots
Eric Stewart wrote I'm Not in Love in response to his wife telling him that he didn't say "I love you" often enough. When they were recording this song, Kevin Godley thought it needed something extra to put it over the top. He came up with the line, "Big boys don't cry," which the band members liked, but they needed to find the right voice to speak it. Just then, secretary Kathy Redfern opened the door to the control room and whispered, "Eric, sorry to bother you. There's a telephone call for you." Lol Creme said, "That's it! That's the voice!" Redfern was reluctant to do it, but they talked her into it. The line later became the inspiration for the band name Boys Don't Cry.
They were huge in the 1970's-many hit songs you might recognise like Rubber Bullets, Wallstreet Shuffle, Life Is A Minestrone, The Things We Do For Love, Art For Art's Sake, Good Morning Judge, I'm Mandy Fly Me & Dreadlock Holiday.
Godley and Cream (2 band members) were the pioneers of layering vocals which they did in there studio in Stockport UK. The female backing singer was the receptionist from there studio. Their is a video of the making of the song which is fascinating to watch.
I hear this song and it is the spring of 1976, I am in a guy friend's car on a country road going from his house to mine--deep in conversation. When it came on the radio, we cranked it up.
Kudos to you both! I remember when this song came out, a bit young to know Love well then, but in a few years "the denial" and the ethereal vocals were hard to forget. With the "Be Quiet, big boys don't cry" in my head, to control my emotions whenever possible.... for a long time. The irony and denial is not to be forgotten. ANYWAY, here's the point to this comment: for whatever reason, I happened upon this song again tonight and happened to watch several "reaction" videos for this. You two seemed to be the ONLY ones that got the true meaning.. the "thou doest protest too much" adage, that the more you deny something, the more likely it is true. The others took it at face value that this person was trying to let someone down that they weren't in Love with them. Well done Ladies! Keep it up!!
This used to be one of my favourite "late evening" songs. You know, you get home after an evening out, the lights are low, the fire's burning in the fireplace and you're having a glass of something you enjoy before you go to bed That kind of tune.
Yeah like 64 layers of voices on the background. Pretty genius. And the Big boys don't cry ladies voice, she was I think the office secretary or something.
I remember buying "The Original Soundtrack" LP when it was released in March 1975 after previously buying "Sheet Music" in 1974. As I listened to the first side of "The Original Soundtrack" and "I'm Not In Love" started I simply knew it would be a hit. The album is still in my collection today and it is still worth playing over and over again. The multiple voices at the beginning were actually the band's recorded tape loops played and organised in many channels on the mixing desk. That was a very creative offering from the band members and took hours to set up. Magic music that has stood the test of time.
Such a unique and innovative arrangement this song is! I am a child of the '70s and remember this song and their other hits very well. This puts to shame the autotune and oversampled trash being passed off today as music. The 1970s were the true golden age of popular music. Nothing will ever top it...
Ground breaking track! By the way, the whispered vocals of "Be quiet, big boys don't cry" came from the secretary of Strawberry Studios (the studio the band operated), Kathy Redfern. They were looking for a certain sound when Redfern entered the studio to quietly tell Eric Stewart he had a phone call. When they heard her voice, they knew it was right for the song. Other songs worth a reaction by them include 'Art for Art's sake' 'The Wall Street Shuffle' 'The Dean and I' 'I'm Mandy Fly Me' 'Donna' and a whole lot more too, well worth delving deeper ladies.
So glad you did this one! It's so beautiful. A lot of those droning backing vocals come from studio experiments - long tape loops in the studio. It was somewhat groundbreaking in that way. They had another big hit with 'The Things We Do For Love'. Hope you're over the snow!
"big boys don't cry" is sung by the record company's receptionist! They suddenly wanted a female singer for that line. This is so junior high school angst. Lots of us guys are stuck there.
In 1975, when this was a hit I was almost 20 yrs old a United States Marine on Okinawa. My girlfriend mailed me the dreaded "Dear John Letter." I acted like it did not hurt... I was heart broken and cried like a baby. To this day I still remember those feelings.
This song absolutely stops me in my tracks just as much today as it did in 1975. It sounds just as good today and will in another half century. There's no band around now that could come within a million miles making a song this good. 10cc what a band.
The subtitle for this song would be " he does protest too much ". The wonderful thing about this song is its production values and the juxtaposition between the lyrics and music.
Hi ladies my first time watching you and what a beautiful song, I'm 59 so i know it so well and my eldest brother and his wife had it as there wedding song, but got divorced 15 years ago but not because of the song lol, I do really love this song 🍻
Released in May, 1975, this sure did bring back a flood of memories, very late in my HS Junior year, Senior year up before I realize, song was played constantly on top 40 radio formats, which were most all them, all Summer long and on into the next school year in Sept., it was part of my Senior year in school, the summer before it an integral part of my senior year, it was going to be my last summer while in secondary school, college will not be the same, I've now grown beyond that after Sept. arrives, and a personnel era has gone, never to get it back. 😔
This is a battle between love and the fear of rejection. He's on the edge of tears, whispering "big boys don't cry", Desperately trying to avoid looking pathetic by denying that anything he is doing means that he is vulnerable.
My interpretation of the lyrics always reminded me of a story from my past: I met a girl in my last year of University and, for me at least, it was love at first sight. We became inseparable from that very first day, but only ever as friends. I was always too scared to tell her how I felt. And the pain got so much that I had to convince myself that I didn't love her to stop from going insane. It took a pretty long process to do that, and, of course, the second I convince myself truly that "I'm Not in Love", she tells me she's crazy about me. But I've done that good a job falling out of love, I can't even bear to hear it, cos, by that time, my heart was completely closed off and I felt nothing but the pangs of regret that I didn't hold off a little bit longer and maybe we could have been together.
The idea for the song came from Eric Stewart ( lead vocal ) saying to his wife that if he kept saying "I Love You" over and over, it wouldn't mean anything even though he did love her. He recalled to The Guardian: Thank you so much for this reaction I loved it!!
Eric and his wife Gloria are still married after more than 50 years( but I don't think it'll last, "It's just a silly phase he's going through.")

You have to listen to this song with headphones...there are so many things going on in this song...one of the most 'beautiful' songs ever recorded....
probably the most beautiful song ever written. The backing vocals/harmonising are off the planet
I'd say Vincent wins that accolade, but I love this too.
@@slayerrocks2 I was going to say God Only Knows, but both this song and Vincent are beautiful as well.
10cc are an incredibly intelligent band that straddle rock and pop. They are very talented Musicians and Writers their albums are brilliant! A great live band!

576 voices. Three singers x 12 notes x 16 tracks. Looped, yes, like a Mellotron. Such imagination!

10CC were huge huge HUGE in Britain in the 70’s with a string of massive hits, all very inventive and catchy as all hell.
Hi, Girls! This song was such a monster smash back in the day, that the BBC did a documentary on it entitled " The Making Of I'm Not In Love By 10cc"! Please pull that up, then you'll really appreciate the love that was poured into this song!
God Bless!
Excellent video I watched it. It’s amazing
My absolute favorite song EVER
It's a great song. They got the admin worker at the recording studio to say the "big boys don't cry" line.
I went to see them live in concert in 1975 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Hopefully I will see them again for the 50 year tour later this year!! Happy Days!
One of the greats
Yes it was 1975. I was almost 20 years old. I was a United States Marine on Okinawa. My girlfriend broke up with me. I was heart broken 💔. To this day when I hear this song I think of Terri, from Lexington, KY, USA
Gorgeous song,beautifully sung.
This is absolutely one of my most favorite songs ever in the history of my musical journeyed life!!!
One of the most underrated bands èver. Saw them live 6 months ago and they were absolutely outstanding!! These guys are real musicians!! Great reaction as usual guys. Take care. Best wishes from the UK.

Can't be forgetting "Dreadlock Holiday"!
I’m Mandy Fly Me, one of my favourites.
The Female vocal on I’m not in Love was provided by the band’s receptionist at the recording studio
Beautiful mom and daughter🎸
Such a beautiful classic !!!!
Written by band members Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman, Stewart came up with the idea for the song after his wife of eight years asked him why he didn't say "I love you" more often.
10cc was very popular in the seventies. "The Things We Do For Love' was a staple on the radio from the mid through the late seventies.
Great song.
Melhor react que eu já vi, obrigado pelas legendas.

I also remember from my sophomore year in high school. I was going steady with a girl at that time.
I was in elementary school that year. Remember hearing this on the radio at the neighborhood pool that summer
It Was A Number One Single! For Two Weeks On The British Singles Chart In 1975!
Great choice! Simply a crowning achievement in the 70's soft rock genre. It's aged beautifully.
10cc are very underrated and tended to fly under the radar for most people despite most people knowing at least one of their song but not knowing who sang it.
10cc is a great band, I always - and still do - loved listning to them. Great reaction from you both ...🎶🎸
The Tingling sounds you hear are called Chimes, that the drummer uses.
Thank you

G & C pioneers on the modern music video
Great reaction ladies, now ready for the flip side, “The Things We Do For Love” by 10cc next, if you please 🙂

On the beach in Cornwall. Hottest summer on record. Listening to this and the ocean in the background. Life lasts forever. Memories.
'Mum' is spot on.! lol. Mum is also thinking....if only I'd met him 30 years ago!!

A group of lads from a small town in the north of England, Preston, created a song love of enormous originality and beauty. A gift from heaven.
Preston? I don't think so!

10cc....you would not believe the genius these 4 guys from Manchester, UK had. Their album, 'Don't Hang Up' is one of my favourites. Beautiful.
You would like another song by 2 former members of this group called Cry and the members are Kevin Godley and Laurence Neil ( Lol) creme
This was recorded at Strawberry Studios in Stockport, England. My wife used to see the band coming into the place she worked in the area regularly.

And Herman's Hermits....No Milk Today!
Great reaction, and yes it brings back 70s vibes...and you 2 look especially beautiful and elegant today🤠🥰
Eric Stewart and his wife Gloria are still married after 56 years... and Gloria still tells him he doesn't say "I love you enough".
Oh! He's definitely in love!! 😍
I watched a documentary on this song, they did 462 over dubs to make that vocal sound, sounds angelic
Summer of 1975 🌺 ☄
You women can see right through us. That's one of the reasons we love you.
One of the most beautiful and haunting songs ever….
You know, you get home after an evening out, the lights are low, the fire's burning in the fireplace and you're having a glass of something you enjoy before you go to bed
That kind of tune.
Definitely a perfect "lights-out-late-at-night-listening-through-headphones" kind of song.
Yeah like 64 layers of voices on the background. Pretty genius. And the Big boys don't cry ladies voice, she was I think the office secretary or something.
Loved this as a kid -- as an adult I learned how they did it and I'm impressed as heck.
Lead singer Is Eric Stewart
Ground breaking track! By the way, the whispered vocals of "Be quiet, big boys don't cry" came from the secretary of Strawberry Studios (the studio the band operated), Kathy Redfern. They were looking for a certain sound when Redfern entered the studio to quietly tell Eric Stewart he had a phone call. When they heard her voice, they knew it was right for the song.
Other songs worth a reaction by them include
'Art for Art's sake' 'The Wall Street Shuffle' 'The Dean and I' 'I'm Mandy Fly Me' 'Donna' and a whole lot more too, well worth delving deeper ladies.
This is a master piece
So glad you did this one! It's so beautiful. A lot of those droning backing vocals come from studio experiments - long tape loops in the studio. It was somewhat groundbreaking in that way. They had another big hit with 'The Things We Do For Love'. Hope you're over the snow!
"big boys don't cry" is sung by the record company's receptionist! They suddenly wanted a female singer for that line. This is so junior high school angst. Lots of us guys are stuck there.
10cc is a British super group, every member is from a different British group, they all got together to form 10cc
10cc were the first band I saw live at the Hammersmith Apollo in London circa 1972/3. Went with my then girlfriend. Groundbreaking band in many ways.
In 1975, when this was a hit I was almost 20 yrs old a United States Marine on Okinawa. My girlfriend mailed me the dreaded "Dear John Letter." I acted like it did not hurt... I was heart broken and cried like a baby. To this day I still remember those feelings.
From my neck of the Woods. Manchester and Stockport. Amazing creative songwriters.
Genius is a much used word these days but these guys were and all their songs were different.
@@Isleofskye Agree.
This song absolutely stops me in my tracks just as much today as it did in 1975. It sounds just as good today and will in another half century. There's no band around now that could come within a million miles making a song this good. 10cc what a band.
Thanks for reviewing my favorite song. I was 9 years old when it came out 😘
The subtitle for this song would be " he does protest too much ".
He is 100% in love. In very much denial. Remember this song back in the 70’s when I was a teen.
Knew this British band in the 70's as a teenager who lives in the UK. Got a chance to see them in concert 4 years ago, still fantastic.
Hi ladies I hope you're all done well. It's always good to run across your videos.😊
Another great british band!
This is also the short version of the song.
This is a battle between love and the fear of rejection. He's on the edge of tears, whispering "big boys don't cry",
Desperately trying to avoid looking pathetic by denying that anything he is doing means that he is vulnerable.
He doth protest too much lol. This is actually a love song to his wife who complained to him that he didn't say I love you enough.
The idea for the song came from Eric Stewart ( lead vocal ) saying to his wife that if he kept saying "I Love You" over and over, it wouldn't mean anything even though he did love her. He recalled to The Guardian:
Thank you so much for this reaction I loved it!!
