His mother abandoned him at the age of 3 and the song is about his hope she might return to develop a relationship with him, sadly she never did. The video was filmed in Whitby, with the Abbey as the backdrop.
I never knew that. Changes the whole song for me.
Heard this song 100 times but never knew that is what it was about. Very sad.
Good information.
That's trauma of the worst kind.
I never realized that. Whitby in North Yorkshire.
He has been filling stadiums for decades.
Hucknall wrote this song in his bedroom at his father's house when he was 17. The inspiration for the song came from a teacher at the Manchester School of Art, where Hucknall studied fine art. The instructor suggested that the best paintings are created when the artist is in a state of unconscious creation, and Hucknall attempted to use this approach in his songwriting. One of my favourite songs ever ❤
Apparently he went to the Famous Sex Pistols gig in Manchester. with all the other folk that later started bands... Mick obviously started a band but another direction to most of the others that went
The angst Mick can display with his voice is magic. I suppose singing a song you wrote about the disfunction in your early years helps.
Mick's voice is unbelievable. I feel the 80's soul, and I love it. Please consider "If You Don't Know Me By Now." So much soul.
He wrote the song when he was 17 when he finally left home. Such a brilliant song for someone so young 👍🏻😁🏴
Mick has such a great voice, you need to listen to him live !!!!!
His mother left the marriage for another man… his father took to drink and wasn’t a good father to him. Mick is still singing today and still sounds the same if not better 👍🏻😁🏴
young lady, it's nice to see how you recognized the emotion in his voice and the lyrics of the song.. Mom is a little reserved..
The version of this with the extended intro is incredible.
I think what you might be trying to describe is a "soulfulness" in his voice. It`s the difference between singing the notes on the page and deeply feeling the song in a heartfelt way.
"Holding Back The Years" went to #1 on the pop charts in 1986. Powerful vocals and lyrics. It's a sad song reminiscing about his childhood.
Another side of this is, I as a parent had a son, that I loved very much. I remember the first time I heard this song, me, him, and his sister were in a truck, driving down the interstate. I remember looking at them and thinking, I had the whole world right there with me at that moment. He grew up and my son and I worked together. At age 43, I found him in one of my buildings on a Saturday morning. There is nothing on this earth, that I know how to describe what goes through you at that moment. This song has a very special meaning for me, it always takes me back to that special moment in time. We are there together forever.
His mother left him when he was four. He wrote this song about his pain when he was 14.
He is such an amazing singer and that is one of my favorite songs.
This song and his singing give me goosebumps.
One of the greatest songs ever in my opinion. Been loving it over 30 years. You should also try his version of the R&B hit “If You Don’t Know Me By Now”.
Agreed! It's iconic
More like nearly 40yrs
Mick Hucknell wrote this song at the age of 17. From what I have gathered he was abandoned by his mother so I suppose there is a degree of truth in some of the lyrics. He did a "jazzy" version of this song many years later that I like even more than this version. He has a tremendous voice and a range that is really something. He is one of those singers that can make you smile or bring you to tears..... sometimes in the same song.
A true British legend.
Best voice ever.....
He’s from Manchester,England.
Hell of a voice huh?
😂😂😂😂
Great reaction ladies! Loved Simply Red back in the 80s. He had such an amazing voice. I saw a youtube video where he looked much older (maybe 50 years old?) and his voice still sounded amazing.
This song is a beautiful hymn to survival.
Not only did his mother abandon him, he had a tough time growing up with his dad too. He met his mother many years late when she faked cancer! She said in an interview she didn’t regret leaving him behind at all. What a B
I would give her a c.
He sings this even better live even now he is a lot older. Mick never lost his voice or soul.
Such a powerful voice. You both picked up on the meaning early. Good job.
Nick has one of the most underrated voices and music ever. You should check out other songs in his catalog.
Mick hucknall used to live ten minutes from me such a great person to I love this song
Do a deep dive into Simply Red, you wont regret it!
He did a great cover of if you don't know me by now.
And a great cover of "The Air That I Breathe" by the Hollies.
The Harbour pictures are of Whitby North Yorkshire England. The inspiration for Dracula. This is a brilliant group Mick Hucknall the Singer is from Manchester England. The Band released some fantastic songs!
Video filmed in Whitby, North Yorkshire, UK. Train also filmed in North Yorkshire. Mick Hucknall, the singer wrote this song when he was a teenager. His mother left when he was 3 years old.
This song can evoke emotional pain and suffering within if you let it. This song is still the masterpiece it was then as it is today and all is still relevant.
One word beutifull 😊
Hi ladies, another Gem of a song from my teenage years 😊. I love the flashbacks that your channel allows me. Thanks for your reactions 🥰.
The Lyrics "Strangled by the wishes of Pater" refers to his father and "Hoping for the arms of Mater" refers to his mother who left him with his father when Mick was only 3 years old....He named his band "Simply Red" after his hair color, his politics and his favorite soccer team Manchester United, which is from the city where he was born.
He really does have an incredible voice. It could be that the lyrics were referring to something hoped for that never happened.
What a great pairing of this mother and daughter reaction team they do come across as very likable and natural .this was actually the best reaction I’ve seen on this particular song so well done ladies 👍🏻. its hard to believe that mick hucknall the singer is an old man now . but as they say Time flys and there’s no holding back the years for any of us sadly !! 👋🏻🇬🇧
He is an amazing vocalist and still putting out music. A new album is coming out around now.
Fantastic song - feeling! Love the beat and totally love Mick´s singing. 😍
This was filmed in Whitby, one of my favourite places in the world and home of the most famous vampire of all, Dracula.
A beautiful voice, if you see the live versions there is no difference between this and live. I saw Mick Hucknall on telly being interviewed at a football (soccer) match with his favourite football team, Manchester United and the guy was so knowledgeable of the game, he really could become a football pundit. Keep up the good work ladies x
Hello beautiful Simply Red. It's from my time, l'm from 1975 so l know monst of the classic music artists. Likazo 💐💐💖
I think what he meant by holding on is in he’s holding on, waiting for things to get better. Because I interpret holding back the years as in he’s trying to hold back all the pain of what happened and he keeps trying to hold onto living now cause things haunted him. At least that was my interpretation
PS It was Ireland.
I used to think he was singing "holding back ya ears" !!
Mick Hucknall has the voice - and the phrasing on the lyrics - that is hard to resist. I was the fan the very first time I heard it and that was decades ago... Great pick, ladies, one of their best songs but you might want to look out for more - say, The Right Thing, A New Flame, If You Don't Know Me by Now etc )
Such a beutiful song. What a voice.
Great reaction. Now you ladies gotta do "If you dont know me by now" Simply Red.
Mick has a beautiful voice.
*_CHILLS GOOSEBUMPS_*
First and proud to be, as this is one of GenX's most treasured songs, and as an elder GenX we won't let it die.
Mick Hucknall today still delivers this song just as beautifully, fading the decades away.
Mick Hucknall has a great voice....very unique !!
I know so many friwn on reaction videos but atleast for me watching these I have discovered so much more music. I never listened to 60's 70's before but nowadays The only "new" music I listen to is going back in time.
Sure I listen to modern but it's more like 50/50. A new band discovered each week!
Much more unbelievable is, the voice is live the same.
Mother and Daughter I love the way you see these songs in two different perspectives. Good job. Also daughter, it is obvious you got your stunning looks from your Mom. Just saying !! Keep up the good work.
What a nice compliment! Thank you! 😊
I saw Simply Red in concert last year. Great concert, just hit after hit after hit.
In the crowd coming out of the O2 afterwards someone was moaning (someone's always complaining: you could give them a million pounds and they'd ask for two): "He's put on some weight, hasn't he?"
Well, maybe he has but after all it was 37 years since Picture Book. The voice was still fantastic.
My favourite song has always been 'Money's Too Tight To Mention', which was on the same album but is very different. The version he sings now is toned down (references to Reaganomics probably go over people's heads these days) but the original is vicious - and still rings true today. 'Did the earth move for you, Nancy?'
I can think back over the years and remember a lot of songs that I liked, yet only a handful or so of artists that I thought were so exceptional that were "next level". In order: The Bee Gees (too many songs to mention), Simply Red, (Holding Back the Years), Tears for Fears and several of their 80's songs, Phil Collins (In the Air Tonight), Boston (More Than a Feeling), Art Garfunkel (I Only Have Eyes For You).
Those are top for me. Other artists, as I said, had great songs too...but those songs will forever stand out as the most special.
Love your music and both your reactions. Not often do I scroll down Creators' videos. Keep them coming!
Btw, the best ballad is Time In A Bottle, by Jim Croce. I'm sure many would agree.
Simply Red is a great group. I like If You Don’t Know Me By Now.
Mick Hucknal was one of those voices that only comes along every decade or so if you really want to hear how good he really is you should listen to the full album that this track comes from , the album is called RED BOOK absolutely brilliant
Whitby is also famous for its Dracula connection. It is where Dracula bounded off a shipwreck in the form of a dog and bounded up the 199 steps to St Mary’s church. Mick Hucknall is seen walking up the steps in the video.
The video was shot in Whitby North Yorkshire,Whitby Abbey is the backdrop, and is were Bram Stoker wrote Dracula
Makes you think in so many ways of life itself.
Love the song, love his voice, love his long red curly hair ❤ I think he is holding on as in surviving and living his life and going forward. ❤
As mentioned already "if u don't know me by now" showcases his amazing voice and the band also.
I saw Simply Red at The Wiltern in LA in the early 80s and they were fantastic!! Great reaction ladies! ❤️❤️
No Gap in Beauty!!!!!!!!
Simpley Red. Welcome to the rabbit hole. If you dont me by now The Album Stars. UK Soul.Jus love it✌
Love the song!
its about his childhood upbringing in manchester uk. he wrote this song a young lad in his bedroom about his struggles and hardship . then he released it in 1985 . amazing singer amazing voice soul and clarity
SIMPLY RED….STARS….
Beautiful people, mother and daughter…🌹🌷💐🌺
Great song....great voice....great memories for me
"about that moment where you know you have to leave home and make your mark, but the outside world is scary". This was stated after Hucknall had finished the song.
Manchester's finest. Mick Hucknall has a superbly distinctive voice. He is still performing today......
Blue eyed soul at its absolute finest.
I do love that song thank you so much you guys are great.😊
THIS DUDE HAS one hell of set of pipes, CHECK OUT 'MONEYS TO TIGHT TO MENTION'
Yea, the word mater was used and it means mother, he so wanted to know his mother.
Out of interest this video is shot in Whitby in the UK. The church was the inspiration behind the book Dracula, where the book was written.
I've always loved this song. Great choice!
A teacher once told him he'd either end up in prison or famous. Mick decided that it would be the latter. And told the teacher one had make him eat those words. And when simply red won there first brit award the teacher was watching and nearly passed out from shock at home when he realised that the lead singer of the group had just seen winning was his ex student mick
One of my all time favorite songs.
It's a tough song to listen to. I think it's a song about missed opportunities, or things we could, or should have done in our lives. But the main thing is, we can't hold back the years. If anything they just go faster and faster. That's the chilling thing, for me at least.
Mick was, is and will always be a legend
Mick Hucknall was 17 years of age when this was recorded. His recent live performances are even better!!!!!
Great song! They've got more great songs, and Mick has still got it, his voice is still up there!
Saw them a few years ago in concert, older but still great!
STILL SOUNDS GREAT TODAY!
Im a metal head but ofc i do also have Simply Red and UB40 and Comunards. And i sit at work now with a consert T-Shirt of Simple Minds 😇
Simply Red a classic.
❤
It's not that important but as a former trumpet player, the trumpet in the video was NOT the one from the recording. The one in the recording had a mute in it which gives it that kinda kazoo sound but the trumpet in the video didn't have a mute in it.
Trumpet in the song is playing with a mute on but in the video it is not muted at all. Trumpet play might have been really playing (in the video) but that was not what was used for the recording. Also his fingers did not match to the notes being played. (just FYI. There are a lot of music videos of dancers or whomever are supposed to be playing an instrument but have no clue. bugs real musicians to see it).
Some other great hits - Something Got Me Started, Money's Too Tight to Mention or You Make Me Feel Brand New.
Theres a reason why he's called simply red he's a Manchester United fan
yes a manchester lad too
@@broadband01 Manchester city asked him to play at there ground his reply I'm simply red haha
Sunrise is also a good song by simply red.
Listen to Simple Red live sometime.. Talk about Goose bumps😊
You have to play Simply Red's, If You Don't Know Me By Now.
You will not regret it, especially after seeing you react to Holding Back The Years! In my opinion I do think that they are neck and neck, but I will lean on, If You Don't Know Me By Now. And boy does he have a voice!
🔥🔥🔥🔥
great reaction. you might like the soundtrack to "The Commitments". Same genre. "Try A Little Tenderness"
