Mixing live is what makes a real DJ. Mistakes are going to happen you have to be quick and ready. Thank you Luke. Much respect. I going to look for that masterclass of yours.

if we werent experimenting and pushing boundaries and not making mistakes I'd be worried. People expecting perfection are going to be seriously disappointed at live shows with DJ's like yourself that keep trzing new things. Otherwise it just gets boring.

Man I didn't even think to put the word experimenting in there! What happened to experimenting?! I said "happy accidents" but you totally nailed that. Thank you for putting it out there.

Enjoyed this video. I think its a great idea for all djs to record themselves and watch it back. It promotes self awareness and growth.
I've only DJ live I mix live, mash live ... since the mid 90's , my shows, events and gigs are never the same twice. I play to the crowd in front of me. So programming/ picking the right songs, is the most important thing.

I agree, Djing kinda has gotten a little boring, and I have been searching for something new to help keep that spark I had back when I was a teenager and first learning how to spin and come up with new ideas.
Also, recording a Live Mix vs. "Perfect Automated Mix" to me, it sounds different. I personally prefer a Live recorded mix.

Don't cater to the hater-wonderful analysis, Luke! You're playing your gear like an instrument, with a human element to it, and your personality comes through, even in the little mistakes. Even more props for owning up and growing publicly for all of us to see (and learn!)

I watched the mix when it came out and had noticed the mistakes made, but blamed it on the fact that you are new to controller djing and the vast amount of possibilities. You were feature happy djing lol. I love this video because you took the time to analyze your mistakes and gave the reasoning on how you saved the mixes. Well done!

    • @laidbackluke
      @laidbackluke  4 месяца назад +1

The feature-happy comment is legit! I'm really trying to find myself in this whole new world of possibilities. I sometimes try and keep it super simple and super straight for myself, but I can't help it, I need to add all the features ha ha. Thank you for noticing my journey.

Hey Luke, I’m working similar, on a controller without Jog Wheels… jumping around between many functions and cues.
I found out, that 16 big, touch sensitive Pads for loop’s, que’s etc. and 4 smaller buttons for functions, on each deck, speed up and stabilize the process of mixing.
I use a pad controller with an dvs interface on an old MacBook Pro.

…I bet it’s a bit late to change the screen printing on the device at this point, but I think you missed a small but very handy trick - the paddles could have a secondary function as pitch adjustment for cases where sync hasn’t quite got it right.
I see you already have pitch bend buttons on secondary function so that’s a win, but pitch on paddles would also be handy.

@the 225 mark I see what you did there and I don't believe you should have to explain yourself. Some Dj's even with years of experience still can acquire more knowledge as the years go by. Some of these Individuals are just quick in trying to point out errors they think were made. I've been doing this thing for a long time and with an excellent mixing IQ I should add so I try not to concern myself with what others may think.
I may not agree with your choices in DJ gear
any longer but I still support you and enjoy playing the music you produce.
    KEEP ON ROCKIN‼

I like Laidback Luke’s style of improv mixing with minimal prep. He is gonna have few glitches or mistakes during a live mix but who cares as long as no sustained train wrecks or sudden changes in energy of the mix( eg. unintentional volume drop due to poor volume trim or EQ control)

Luke, I also have been a Dj since the early 90’s. Started playing Chicago House & now play Progressive House. You are without doubt a LEGEND in the dj world. And one of the very few Dj’s that actually play live (no pre recorded sets, etc). Most of these couldn’t do what you do. Your only human mate. And sorry to say, i am no fan of yours, but I respect you as a Dj. It’s only because the music you produce & play is a bit commercial for my tastes, but the thousands of laid back Luke fans, would disagree. (Each to their own). Anyway Luke, keep on, keeping on.
All the best for you & your family for 2024 & Beyond. Paul Iveson.

Ignore the haters. Even when you were on the flagship decks, you would make "mistakes" because you were doing tricks across multiple decks while riding the pitch and cramming a massive amount of tracks into a short space of time. It's a high risk, high reward approach, as live improvised performance should be. If I'm honest, I'm a fan of the visual component of you playing on actual decks but I'm also a fan of innovation in general so I appreciate the need to avoid stagnancy this deep into your career. Keep doing your thing 👊

How do You beatmatch without cdjs Is there a pitch bend option in your setup? also something that i think i like more is having bottoms touching the screen is just not the same experience for me as using rubber pads. Also there is not cue and play bottoms pressing the screen of the phone is not quite the same as having that piece of hardware

Bedroom DJs just be throwing hate out there more than being in the creative zone, yes there's always room for improvement in certain sections & like Luke said mixing nearly 50 tracks in 50 mins ain't that easy!
But overall this is a good mix! ❤

  • @DJPao86
    @DJPao86 4 месяца назад

Heya LBL, even though i don't mix 50 tracks in 50 minutes (not my cup of tea), i have 20 years experience as a DJ (not under the same spotlights as you, obviously).
Haters gonna hate, that's for sure, but i'll try my best to give some negative but healthy feedback.
Mistakes are part of this job: for many years i was battling for technique over energy and atmosphere and i was super wrong. Those are lessons that we learn by playing and doing mistakes ... that said, mistakes are not excuses to abuse technology AND still do mistakes. Stuff like sync, quantize, loops, stems and so on are GOOD for our job WHEN used in the correct way.
We are 100% sure that you can use them without abusing them (for example, use sync/quantize/cues to shortcut song preparation and mix earlier), but the issue comes when nobody understands what is done behind the decks.
What i mean is ... if you took another DJ mix and played as yours, almost nobody would realize that isn't you! And this is where tech outshines the DJ.
Short mixing and track selection is personal taste ... i prefer longer tracks (not 90s techno long tracks) with longer transitions, vocal and bass swaps, where you sing-along for a couple of minutes, not for 20 seconds ... but again, that's personal taste, although my personal feeling is that this style doesn't allow the dancer to understand where the flow of the set is going, where the energy is going (are we on an emotional low ? high energy passage ? should we sing ? should we jump ?) and feeds even more in the radio/dancefloor meta of the last few years, where songs are well forgotten after 2-3 weeks.
Just my two cents LBL, i will still love you because your career was amazing and you are yet one of the more genuine DJs out there, that prefers to do mistakes instead of just "selling the dream". Kudos to you.

    Great Video.
But your Mix is also great. A live Mix without any mistakes isn‘t a live Mix. Even if there are mistakes that no one notices.
I attach the greatest importance to transitions so that I am now called Dj Übergang from some people. I do some really good transitions but a few are also really bad. I then work on them to simply get better. But I would never play an already prepared set just to look perfect!

  • @cristianboiardt6800

My first thought is...WHY are you apologising/explaining yourself? 🤔
As you say in the video, you have DJed for so long that i imagine that you have forgotten more about DJing that most DJs today are gonna learn.
For me who have followed you thru the years and heard and seen (unfortunately not in person) a lot of your mixes and performances, this makes me appreciate you as Dj even more.
Because it shows you're human 🙏😊 but above everything else it shows that you are still willing to learn and develop your skills to elevate yourself even more. And that's awesome after all of the years you have been in the business
And it really shows that you do things live, not pre-recorded. Are they big "mistakes....NO! I'll bet that people wouldn't even have noticed if there wasn't for the KeyboardDj-warriors who probably dissected the mix looking for faults. Why didn't you just enjoy the awesomeness of the music and skills?
But kudos to you LL for your elegant response to the haters and for recognising that your mix wasn't a 100 percent seamless and perfect, because it has to be perfect in the.good feeling it provides, not the technical aspect.
So LL, keep the awesomeness of your skills coming and give the new DJs a real foundation....
And to the whole Dj-community...Keep the phat beats coming and peace and love to all of you! 🎧🙏💖

Djing live is associated with taking risks. So, the "real" mistake is a superficial knowledge of the track the DJ is going to play. Beatmatch and timing errors happens and will happen even to pros, but they are pros just because they know they can make those mistakes and know how to correct them as fast as they can

People commenting like "you made a mistake here..." think DJing is some kind of mathematic where there is only one option (usually the less creative one).
The big mistake would be to make this set on Ableton and release it with a random visual (which would be totally fine as this is something people listen outside of a club/festival situation). Every DJ (who really play their set) make mistake, even Jeff Mills or Q-Bert (maybe a little less than the rest of other simple mortel for those 2), the talent is not how you avoid making those mistake but how you handle them, how you embrace them and don't let them pulling you out of the "zone" :)

I feel like all the "Future of Djing" is only making you worse tbh. I've compared your old stuff with your new stuff and you can hear the difference. Many DJs seems to suffer from this including myself. Sometimes less is more.
