Been DJing with IPad/Traktor Z1 since 2015, for me the main advantage of the combo is the data output after every session, you get the tracklist rightafter, the library becomes intuitive so it suggests tracks that ive used. this could be a timesaver.
been able to "touch" the waveforms in big IPad screen unleashed a whole new creative side of mixing for me

Very nice! I would switch to my phone in a heartbeat, but as a wedding DJ it's much easier for me to use laptop due to huge library, tons of crates and also it's easier to type in search via laptop. When you DJ for 8-10 hours, you need bigger screen as well. So I guess it all comes down to what type of a DJ you are.

I started djing on pioneer cdj 200. I bought back in that time a Stanton turntable as well to experiment and although I really enjoyed it I did understand that the time of turntables was over. After that I switched to laptop then to usbs on rekordbox and today I sold my MacBook and bought an iPad.
My point is that the new generation of djs cannot be ignored as the “cdj” generation could not be ignored and then the "laptop" generation could not be ignored.
I cannot recall how much money i have spent through the years for dj gear. Now my mindset is that i only spend on good headphones and a good portable controller that will connect to a device i already own.
    keep up the good work.
I know you receive hate from some people but keep in mind it's hate from people who will most likely be using your gear in a few years.

Very well explained & great point that the dj software can always be quickly updated.👍
    MY THOUGHTS:
I think the gimmicky spinning wheels (on all dj softwares) just take up too much screen, instead shrink them (but not the BPM, Loop or FXs) and move up the "prepare section" (rectangular box) right under the vertical Waveforms, so that the dj focuses on the next best song.
👆This would keep the dj engaged on what is the best song to mix next, have the need to play song ready for that event and have a visable emergency crowd saving song(s) ready to play on the fly,
extremely important for pro djs, IMO.
Keep up the future dj setup work. I think you are very close to cracking that code, L' s up!
    Thank you Luke,🙏

I love the portability. The size. Seems super easy to use. But why use the phone you use on the daily? Seems advisable to get a second phone, right? Like strictly for sets. Idk, personally, I'd not want to rely on the device that lives in my pocket everyday.

I started using the original Traktor app on an iPad and a X1 mk2 and a Z1
    Around 2014
It was for a regular but smaller Bar/club gig
I even did a NYE gig on that set up
The only issue I had back then was the IPad crashing or stuttering if I DJed more than a 3 hour set
But that was 10 years ago.
The power of phones and laptops are on another level
Since watching these vlogs on your Mixxon
I have dug out the Z1 and X1 for my radio show
Still using a laptop but it’s ultra portable

Traktor is solid for sure! And indeed, it's safe to say the phone/tablet/computer gear has evolved way more and will continue to evolve much faster than the "Flagship" setup type of DJ gear.

Cool stuff, I’m all about it if it works for you. Quick note for the software squad, 1,000+ hours of performing on MacBook pros and USBs, RekordBox and Serato, since 2008, never, ever had a problem. Totally cool if you perform your best on this setup, but laptops are rock solid and more flexible than anything else, esp when you start using ableton, osc, touchosc, etc…

I've been exploring mobile "setups" since the Behringer BCD2000 came out. I was using it with a Serato box and Bome's midi controller to convert midi to keystrokes to control Serato. Since then I've had soooo many mobile setups including the Reloop Mixtour which I still have and love. One thing the software DJ manufacturer's haven't really cracked is being able to share with friends. It's the main reason why after all these years I actually started using USB's with reckordbox and an XDJRX3 - so I can get together with my mates and we can all jump on and have a mix at any time. For non pro DJ's, DJ'ing is often a shared experience with friends and the ease with which you can do that is completely unmatched with a traditional CDJ/XDJ USB stick setup. If I was a product lead at Reloop, I would be working on a improved ways for users to have shared experiences like you can with a USB stick setup and ways to integrate home/mobile setups into traditional club setups. eg: Multi deck-only controller with multiple audio outs that can be routed to club mixer or connected to a midi counterpart as a modular setup. Traktor's KX1 was a great controller but it needs mobile software and an audio interface to connect to club mixers. Meanwhile Pioneer continues to make cheaper controllers that emulate CDJ's which are now 30years old. Thanks for sharing Luke. It's refreshing to hear your views.

One of my favorite things about djay sw (that I gave a more serious look at since your videos on it) besides the really great autogridding (which always seems to be on point even with variable bpm’s on older tracks) is the loops and sequenced sample playback. Combine that with stems and it’s like having a simple version of Ableton in your DJ software. I really like that - it’s super flexible and fun. No other DJ software has that inside its offerings AND you can midi map it to a small Akai grid controller and you are good to go. Pretty amazing stuff.
I’m super interested in whatever new version of Djay is coming out in a few days. Maybe improved stem separation quality?

Stems restrictions are key for an iPhone set up. I don’t understand the reason for their restrictions? Right now it’s Tidal whom I am referring too. I sincerely hope stems are allowed in streaming subscriptions. If not, then a hard drive to house your library for the phone to use will have to be the option or back to the laptop it is.

My fear with DJ'ing songs on streaming services is the WIFI. Half of the time, the reception is spotty, whereas the venue's WIFI or your hotspot. That is why I could rely on my library on my laptop. I think if you have a specific set for an hour or two and no requests, you can get away with whatever music you have on your phone. In that case, you mind as well just DJ on USB sticks. I work at dive in bars, restaurants in hotels etc where I constantly have to read the room and have a very wide range in my library which I doubt a phone can hold.

It's interesting to see well thought out processes in using set ups. I've switched to Serato somewhere in 2009 which was late because the first final scratch options were available in 1999 or so.... To me it really felt like homecoming. Just use the laptop. set up your crates and life is good. I also like the fact you have so much options in using hardware. When bringing along a dj-sp1 or similar controller you can use stems properly with any flagship set up (uuuuh true story. couldn't use the 3000's upon release lol which got me stuck In a let's synch and hot cue set right there). I still love scratching in my sets way to much to give up on it. Am currently really cool with the rev5 because it allows you to not even use stems properly but you're also able to program your own transition records choosing which stems you want to use or create a transition loop.
Unfortunately the mix tour doesn't have those options but I like the idea of a portable mixer. I also liked the akai max series with dvs option. Small gear is fun to work with and forces you to be creative which is a fun proces.
Anyway keep using your set up because I like the insight of it. I'll translate that spirit into my own set ups...

    • @laidbackluke
      @laidbackluke  7 месяцев назад +2

It's not a lot ha ha, but I guess it's more than your average DJ. From Pioneer to Denon it was relatively easy, they had the software for that to just get those over. On DJay, I had to start from scratch. But, programming cue points on the app is super fast and you can do that anywhere since it's on the phone. And just to make sure you get it, with the various setups and the phone being the brain of it, it's just all there : )

The future of DJing is not so much the phone but any interface that can be valid for DJing. Whether it's a hologram, some drones projecting an interface into the air, or you making some hand gestures while the DJ interface shows on the inside of your lenses: all that stuff is already technically possible and some of it will take off at some point. Heck, DJing might even become a psychic experience further down the line.

I understand why you have chosen the setup, and even I would consider using it, but there is something that does not convince me, the mixer. I understand that you need a device to control the songs on your phone, but I prefer the mixer to be a standard one, for the feeling, and because it has more than two channels (it doesn't have to be the Pioneer one, it can be a Xone, Model1 or whatever).
I would love for mixers to allow you to connect a device like the Xone K2 via USB and that's it, 4 tracks, a very powerful mixer, and the portability of using a mobile phone or iPad. I am also not seeing brands that are betting on devices like the aforementioned Xone K2 (and it is more than 10 years old), the most similar is the Traktor X1, but it does not have a sound card and on top of that it only works for traktor.
I think there are many people with a similar thought, it makes no sense to spend so much money on a flagship setup. Those who carry a laptop have it solved, but not on mobile phones/ipad. Hopefully in a few years the whole panorama will change.

An iphone 15 is far superior than alot of laptops out there . The A17 pro chip is the base structure of the M3 chip. Even the A12X from the ipad pro gen 3 is from 2019 far superior than 80% of laptops today. The ipad and iphone will clearly be well optimized in the next few years . Sad to say that . Any midi controller pretty much would be flagship at that point for a cheap price. Even the manufacturer are noticing hence moving to mobile devices .

    • @obeip
      @obeip 7 месяцев назад

That's what I'm saying, it's a system that I really like because it means connecting a cable and that's it, that's why I would like more mixers to have similar systems and also release more K2-type devices, but also thinking about mobiles/tablets.

Curious with this setup. Is all the music you DJ with on your phone currently, and when you get tracks from other producers (IDs, not released) are they added to your phone? The reason I ask is, on my laptop I have so many songs and use stems/fx all the time that it stresses my laptops RAM, CPU, or both that it ruins all my mixes. Am also in the DDJ-SZ so very old controller ha

Half my music is on my iCloud, so when I get tracks from other producers, I just drag it into a folder on iCloud which I then can access on my phone. The other half of my set I stream off of Tidal, but will now be Beat Source and Beatport because of Tidal's stem limiting. I run this on an iPhone 14 Pro Max and it has no problem with the heavy lifting : )

    • @therumbler

the sound quality comes 100% from the Mixtour controller itself (like 99% of DJ controllers it has a built-in sound card). Whether it's plugged into a phone, a tablet, a windows laptop etc. it will always sound the same. Mojaxx reviewed the Mixtour seven years ago. "RCA output is nice & loud. It is true that software is amazing, but it also needs to come with some reliability concern - when your iPhone updates itself and Apple pushes a new iOS version to your phone, are you still 100% sure it works with all your gear? If you are on the road and a software update happens that breaks something in your DJ setup, what do you do? Most software companies are not used to building and testing mission critical applications and fully testing their code updates, they do the best they can in-house, and then they often use the public as "beta testers" for new updates they push, and fix bugs as the public bug reports come in. That type of ecosystem might work ok for personal laptops & desktops, but for mission critical applications like touring DJ/musician live setups and Tesla cars, it is much more risky and problematic for software updates to break something, so a different mindset is required. Also, how is your public experience with streaming music for your shows? Can you get a strong cell or WiFi signal everywhere you go to guarantee you will have the streamed tracks you want when it comes time to perform? How do you test and deal with errors in the beatgrids for all tracks you stream, or do you just wing it and adjust as best you can?

So far the only issue with those mobile setups - sometimes its crashing, in this case software update is important, however most of the time it works just fine with no problems, streaming music is not reliable and neuromix doesn’t work, all tracks definitely should be downloaded and processed with software like mixed in key…

As Denon heavily relies on software, your comment encapsulates my experience. While it's true that, for example, Denon boasts numerous features, the crucial factor is their reliability. They need to function consistently, not just for brief periods but for extended durations, perhaps up to twelve hours in my case. As a DJ with frequent bookings, I often play open format sets for at least six hours, sometimes even twelve. The appeal of Denon was particularly strong due to its excellent streaming capabilities, which aligned with my preferences. However, I encountered recurring issues such as bugs causing system crashes and occasional glitches that required restarting at least once per event. This proved to be a dealbreaker for me, leading me to switch back to the flagship Pioneer system. Since making the switch, I have experienced no problems. When dealing with the potential for laptop crashes, I mitigate the risk by using standalone systems and preparing at home. While no setup is entirely foolproof, I find that Pioneer's flagship systems outperform Denon in terms of stability and reliability, despite Denon's extensive array of features.

Even the future Flagship stuff should do this imho like the next iteration of the 3000's.

WIth this setup you have to buy the 300$ controller plus put wear and tear on your personal phone. Both dont last forever and will need to be replaced. Pioneer needs to hurry up and add stems so flash drives can be just as useful.

I agree that club standard gear is limiting. Lack of stems, key shifting etc. The only “superior” part in the entire club standard pioneer kit imo is the effects part of the mixer and maybe the master EQ. It’s funny cause I have 2 different pioneer setups in my Amazon cart that I never pull the trigger on mainly because the lack of key shift. But now that I’ve been using stems, it’s even harder to justify. I think the reason I’d do it at this point is to practice using them if I was getting gigs in clubs that had their own setups. @@laidbackluke For sure AI is changing the landscape, case in point - the Crossfader FX in Djay Pro, watch the two EQ knobs adjust automatically during the Automix. As a newbie to the DJ world, I wonder if the solution is to be able to program each DJ's unique "mixing style" per song, genre, crate, etc. as a pull down option. If this is the way forward, do I need EQ knobs at all? The plethora of FX mix choices will only grow and maybe my value add is purely on the curation side - which is also being influenced by AI....hmm - what's a new DJ to do....what HW should I purchase....right now is DJAY pro on my iPAD and iPhone.
Regardless, the iPhone screen is a bit to small for me although the iPAD mini at 8.3" ($399 at Staples - Gen 6 / A12 Bionic) seems perfect especially since it support DJAY single deck mode for cue point prep. The iPhone does not support single deck mode which is strange but nothing is perfect.

What needs to be addressed is the sheer misuse of power by the the currently dominating brand. There is evidence that around the years 2000-2005 certain mixers had inferior phono preamps to push things in a certain way. (Not naming brands, but I think you already know what brand this is)

Phone from now are as powerfull as old standard computer from 5 year ago, so basically no difference, except a smaller screen (and so less chance to get stuck in the "Serato face" while mixing). But with that setup, don't you miss the jogwheel/platter ? not that it's a problem for mixing, but I know people, myself include, like the sensation of moving physically something, and also having the possibility to scratch (even though it's not a necessity, more a "guilty pleasure" thing)
For the future, I see perfectly phone replace laptop, and smartwatch doing the same (when streaming track will become a standard thing), but on the hardware side, I hope company will evolve into more modular thing, like a box where you can easily make your system evolve (kind of like a computer) so you can add more power, change the screen, choose the kind of platter, so you don't have to change everything when you want to stay up to date with new technology.
