    As a beginner DJ, I already broke all the rules. It’s just a hobby for me (bedroom DJ and house parties) but I learned early that the “crowd” doesn’t care about your technical skills, they just wanna dance and have fun (and so do I). So even if you mess up a transition or two, no one cares as long as the music is good. Of course I wanna improve but it’s only so I can enjoy my self more while DJing.
    This spring, I started DJing at the park for a few friends who likes to roller dance. Now I’m getting ask in the neighborhood when is our next “event”, we had crowds of around 50 people’s at times. Never thought I’d have that kind of reaction.

      Max, I totally agree. I've just started DJing, I've done 2 parties, I did screw up a couple times and let the music stop. But the crowd enjoyed it. One question, I consider myself an old school DJ....do I have to convert to up to date music or can I stay in that lane?

    I've been DJing for over 30 years, I learnt on vinyl, I spent 100's of hours practising, learning to beat match, key match and phrase match and then on my first gig in a club, learnt the art of DJing all over again from scratch, realising, its what the crowd wants that's the most important thing, you could be the most technically brilliant dj ever but if you don't play the music your audience wants to hear... you might as well pack up and go home... I still have a club residency (when the clubs reopen that it is lol) and i now use a Traktor S8 and yup, I will happily use the SYNC button, it gives me the time to see what the crowd is doing and reacting to, I DO take requests, I don't play them all but I do try to if I think my audience will enjoy it or it fits with the style the crowd is already dancing to. Most of us are not superstar DJ's, most crowds wont care if you mix out of key, all they want is to be entertained and dance and that is what the majority of us are paid to do.. entertain.

    Sync does something well- while it puts beatmatching to the back, it also puts music selection more to front of DJ skills. The very early days of DJing did not even use beatmatching (when turntables lacked good pitch sliders) because it was mostly about choosing the right tunes and knowing the right times to drop them in.

    1) Agree massively - Use Sync to do more! It may allow you to do some crazy things that are impractical without it... Just be aware if you're competing for slots in a small local scene, if you can't DJ without sync, you may lose out to other locals who can, because it may be used as an objective way to choose who is more competent... Regardless if that's smart or not.
    2) This works at very mainstream gigs more so than gigs with discnerning crowds of enthusiasts... Enthusiasts who know the tracks already don't want a jukebox DJ, while mainstream punters just like to hear something clear they recognise. If you're doing commercial house with vocals, DEFINITELY let lone tracks play!
    3) 100% disagree... It is NEVER bad to have more music, and if you're finding it hard to search through your tunes, that means you haven't organised them in a manner that is condusive to being searched quickly and easily. More tunes = More likely to be able to find the track you need to get where you are planning to go while holding exactly the vibe you need while staying in key. I will note, it took me time to get a system that worked!
    4) Agree, because you pointed out what the deciding factor is. If you're playing a proper club gig - Prep fully. If you're playing something casual, you need to have a simple range of tunes you know inside out to draw from.
    5) SO well put! You don't have to take requests, but if you don't take note of them... You're an idiot! Also, it's not hard to say "Sorry, I don't have that here." which tends to make punters at least feel like you listened.

    As a bedroom DJ, I just like having fun with music, finding new ways to mix tracks, new breaks to crossover from one to another, etc. Sync enables that step to be taken care of without adding another task. For normal mixing, beatmatching works fine and gives you that extra kick if needed too. I only have about 550 tracks in my library of Trance/Hardhouse, but for the most part, its enough. I add the odd few that make the difference to me in the mix. Music first, effects, etc, second.

    Only rule I'd follow is to understand your audience, and your role. There are loads of variables that can change what works - What the promoter wants, what you're known for, if you're playing to strangers or a familiar crowd/scene, who is on before and after you. The advice in this video is fantastic for DJs who'll need to be flexible with new faces a lot.

    Sidenote on "wishes": if you play at a party where wishes are to be expected like birthdays/weddings etc. you might want lay out a writing pad and a pen so that ppl can write down their wishes. That has three advantages: 1. you don't get distracted too much by requests, 2. ppl are not angry if don't play their requests immediatly (or not at all) 3. It gives you the opportunity incorporate the wishes into your set at the right time.
    My rule Nr. 1 is: The crowd must have fun! ;)

    Great advice Carlo! From a "Boomer" to a World Class DJ, your information is spot on. From an ego perspective, it's hard to teach a new DJ the life skills needed to read a crowd and understand what to play for them. For instance, I saw a DJ at a country bar play a great dance song that the Cowboy Boot, Jean, Ball Cap, Trucker T-shirt wearing crowd started to line dance to. Talk about mind blowing, but it just goes to show you.... "Different Strokes for Different Folks".
    I loved your rules as you make it about your crowd, and in the end, it's about the energy you are able to feed into them to let them have a great time.

I tried my best and prepared myself with a good warmup but when he noticed i was doing good he would stop me and tell me i got people too early "in the mood". I‘d never called anyone a idiot but that guy was a real one. He clearly saw things on the dance floor that didn‘t occur at the specific time roll out sooner as expected & would become mad on me for doing this. I never said that to him, but recently that club got closed & not because of the financial issues. It was because he got so obssesed with him being in the spot with the light show effects and the shitty mixing technics that people even if they were drunk while there all the time, realised he was just shit and moved on. Sir, you are spot on. Too many of these "technerds" masquerading as DJ'S think it makes them a "professional" if they refuse requests, carry 100,000 songs, use pioneer equipment, technics turntables, etc.
    1 First, learn to mix/beatmatch. 2 know your music. You don't need to carry all your music, all the time. 3 know your audience/crowd. 4 put less emphasis on the brand of equipment you use, and more on your creativity. (Remember this... most name dj's have endorsement deals with big companies. Many would not even have half the equipment they have if they had to come out of pocket). 5 criticize less...if you have your skill game up, what's wrong with using sync as a creative tool..what do you think SERATO is for ??? Key match and quantizing are fine, but the goal is to have fun and not sound like a automaton/robot. All in all great advice, keep up the good work.

    Rule #1. Play tracks you love.
    #2. Put them together in a sequence that enhaces them and hopefully makes other people appreciate them too.
    #3. Record, listen back and work on ironing out technical mistakes.
    #4. LEARN TO BEATMATCH! I don't care if it's hard......it makes DJing more fun, more engaging, you get a personal "feel" for records, and trains your brain to make complex decisions about sequencing and track selection that you would never think of if you don't teach yourself to beatmatch. This eventually shows in the quality of your mixes. So just do it.

    Here's something I don't understand about DJing in general: (and I've been doing it for 11 years now)
    Sometimes people recommend practicing their mixes until they are perfect. In one of your previous videos, you mentioned practicing a set until every transition was perfect. "If you can't do it in the bedroom, how can you be expected to do it live?" was one of your quotes.
    At the same time, DJs are never expected to practice anything. Practicing a transition or a series of songs is seen as "preplanning a mix", and is something that a lot of people say is the biggest crime in all of DJing. Playing for yourself and not your audience, how dare you be so self-absorbed, they will say.
    So I'm constantly split between weather I should actually practice or not. If I accidentally use 2 songs that I know work well together in a live mix, that I've practiced before, is that considered "pre-planning"? I understand live-streaming and live audiences are completely different mediums of entertainment, but at the same time, I feel like if you make a mix for the point of being booked, and then you pre-practice it, then it's basically false advertising. The promoter is going to expect something from you that you spent none of your time preparing for (ex. crowd-reading and not planning a set).
    So.... is practicing OK or not?

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  4 года назад

      There's another skill to learn - that is reading the crowd. You can actually practice and practice your favorite mix of certain track list of yours. However, sometimes the crowd isn't digging them. That's why, spontaneity is important! But of course spontaneity comes with mastery. You probably already know how the songs jive to each other because you've been practicing them! Also, it's also nice if you can play the audience's request!

    • @leonaddison9823
      @leonaddison9823 3 года назад

      I do practice. To keep sharp with timing. I play vinyl. I have some songs I always play together because they work well. Like a mini master mix. I listen to requests. Sometimes they work with the flow I'm in. Accepted. Every night is different. To me its about creativity. The art. That's why I dj. It's a form of expression or to me a form of communication. To make people happy. As a Dj you are a performer. You constantly work on your craft. Remember that. Been spinning since 78/79. Horde parties , Bars/ Lounges to Clubs. Where ever I can get on at.
      Peace!

    • @herculesbrofister265
      @herculesbrofister265 2 года назад

      I feel like you're misunderstanding. Consider that you can and have to practice improvising guitar. In DJing you can still learn good mix spots, set cue points, get better at mixing in general without pre-planning a set.

    I am from Jamaica and using sync is solely dependent on the genre. We in Jamaica the artiste has singles, but they also feature a song on a riddim (beat/Instrumental) used by other Artistes. Meaning there can be 10 Artistes with separate songs on on riddim, so we use the sync to quickly mix these song one after the other and then move on to another riddim. I personally had to know how to beat match before knowing these other methods. Try to watch a Jamaican Dancehall party mixed by a Jamaican DJ and you'll see what I mean. Also the way you guys do your mixes are so different from how we do, but we both watch crowd reaction and can just use just an intro to tear a party up. I liked the video by the way.

    So I definitely agree with a lot of what is said here. I don't view Sync as a dirty word generally speaking however I still tend to manually beatmatch because I feel it fits me a little better and I'm fairly good at it (usually). When it comes to having 'prepared' sets, I tend to have prepared sets going into an environment but I specifically tailor my sets to allow for free-form mixing. I like having a structure to follow but one that allows for editing on the fly. As far as the bit about music libraries, I still have an endless fucking chasm that is a music library however I organize playlists in several ways. By BPM, by Genre, and by clean/dirty (I DJ at bars that also are restaurants and often have us starting before family hours are over so it helps to have non-explicit tracks)
    If I had to give any advice to starting or new DJ's its stop assuming that you have to emulate or find a way to copy the pros. Find your own path and your own style. James Hype is a legend but the chances of you being able to emulate his style of mixing is probably not very high at least not in your formative DJing years. Also don't think you need to bite off more than you can chew. 4-channel or 4-deck mixing is starting to become standard practice but don't think you need to jump into that, I still mainly do two-deck mixing but I'm starting to dip my toes into 4-deck mixing and I've been DJing for 10 years.

So I think do whatever the F you want, and focus on what the crowd REALLY wants you to play. I love this video Dj Carlo. I agree with the last rule about not taking requests. I remember a week before the quarantine, I DJed in a private party here in Spain. I got a lot of requests which was fine because it helped me to know what songs to play since I am not a fan of Reggaeton. I did play some EDM bangers in some parts of that night which the crowd enjoyed and then went back to Reggaeton and taking requests. In the end, everyone had a great time!
    But if someone will request a Reggaeton Track when the theme of the night is EDM or Techno will be a different story. lol

    Definitely agree with all of these! I feel the skills between DJ to DJ can vary greatly, just because one DJ uses sync, take requests or doesn't have preplanned setlists, doesn't mean that person is any less of a DJ. In my opinion, "real" DJ's first and foremost concern is playing for and to the crowd. Without the crowd, a DJ is just a guy or girl playing music for themselves. Again, great video.

    All those rules were said to me more than once by fellow DJs here where I live, particularly the Sync Button and No requests ones.

      Right?! These rules are "common" among the community. But yeah! Need to break 'em sometimes too!

    I think that with Sync happens as it does with Autofocus in photography, a lot of "purists" say it's bad and shouldn't be used, I think it should be used if it will help you get the job done better, your clients won't know the difference and won't care they just want the result.

    Great video! Although I must say, as a beginner Caribbean DJ, 20-40 songs in a hour set would 100 percent bore the crowd lolol. We mix tend to mix all genres here pretty quickly since most of our regional music (dancehall, soca, reggae etc.) incorporate an air of repetitiveness. 95% of the time, no one wants to hear more than one verse and chorus lmao, (if even so much to begin with). Hip-Hop as well tends to get mixed very quickly. I use Sync a lot. Just makes the work flow easier sometimes. I made sure to learn the proper way to beatmatch when I was starting out however. And i always make sure my beatgrids are 95-100% accurate whenever i'm just at home cueing up songs anyways

    One major one is when someone does not keep headphones on bc it makes you look like you are faking. Most software will analyze the tracks making it easier to match up the bpms but still a great dj needs headphones to blend in a proper mix that can ride 1 to 3 minutes with styles like tech house or minimal and break beats. The dub and trap djs only need to do 5 to 10 second transitions so I understand when they take off their headphones but to me it looks fake.So currently 95% of DJS playing out I can guarantee do not mix the harder way maybe bc they are worried they will mess up so they sync button

      @@djcarlo hey man I would love to help you with information regarding djing. I have been djing on turntables for 28 years now and have adapted with the times and I love sharing and helping the community anyway that I can. I'm 38 now if that gives you an idea of when I started. My dad was a dj from New York and moved to Germany in 80. So my years growing up I lived in Frankfurt and on the island if Crete in Greece. My mom and dad met at a disco tech called KL2000 in kaiserslautern Germany. Andre Elektro Morales on Facebook

    as DJ you got a single job to do. give people a good time. whether you use sync to do that or not does not matter a single bit. the only people who please by not using sync is other DJs
