I've been creating DJ sets in Ableton since 2007. But eventually, I stopped. Instead, I have moved back to live recordings because the people who attend my events want a memorable takehome from the events we spent time together, and I don't feel the elements that I do live can be recreated either through automation, tracking things out in Ableton and I always hear things in the mix that sound off in all of the solutions that Luke suggested above (Ableton and DJ.Studio) IT IS NOT THE SAME. Your fans want to hear that thing you do with all of the options you have at your fingertips on a full setup of CDJs. I've listened to these. Luke is good at it. IT IS NOT THE SAME. As a DJ of almost 30 years. YOU CAN TELL. The human touch is something you cannot replicate.
If you are concerned that you cannot pull off a perfect-sounding set, I would suggest recording your DJ set LIVE twice and swapping in the parts you like from each recording; at least it is all still YOU, the DJ, mixing life. I absolutely do not like DJ.Studio and it's not the reason for my comment, but this does not capture what we do live.

I was not feeling this before, but I like how your selling this, using this for your PERSONAL RADIO SHOW mix, just to help you save time working on music instead. I feel like that should be the only time this is used for, or maybe to help you preview songs mixed together so you can then do them on your own live
I got trolled for a comment I made on another RUclips vid about this. I think this is an amazing idea. But I think it’s selling short on one sales point. It’s not just for radio shows… thought I think if you’re going to live do as a target, it’s an issue to throw up your mix on Mixcloud, claim you can do it live, but not be able to. So where could it also go? I think it would be an amazing addition to learning how to dj. It will help you know where to put good cue points, and what transition to try, and do a program. Using music you are familiar with or will play rather than that used by the tutorials. The market for that would be much much larger I think than those who want only to mix for a radio show.

As a full time DJ, I do a weekly radio show and am very interested in how to apply jingles and also my voice when presenting the show. Currently I do everything live including playing the jingles. So by the time I have put my playlist together, recorded the show and distributed to all stations, total time is less than 2 hours.... Not sure this would save me that much time in the long run.... But I'm very open to this program.
Maybe give it a little test! Sounds like you have everything under wraps and 2 hours isn't bad at all, wow!

Looks like a cool product, but I don't want the best possible track order according to AI. I want the best possible track order according to you! You wouldn"t outsource your complete track selection to AI, so why outsource the track order? It's part of your personal DJ style. If you give 20 dj's the same 20 tracks you get 20 results. I get that you do alot of radio shows but this removes an important personal touch imo.
I agree, but I see this as a great tool for dropping 4-6 songs sets into and playing the recorded version live, making mixes using the clients playlist and maybe using it live to prep a mix when you’re seeing the crowd in front of you.
Oh and maybe too get inspiration for a new way to blend a list of songs you already use regularly.

I love the concept. It allows dJs to have more content on all platforms. The software is pretty basic, so I don't think it will take away from real DJ creativity.
I know right? I think content will increase with help of this too. Like every day you could upload another top 20 of whatever you like ha ha. And in video!

i used to use mixmeister back in the day (early 2000's) , this seems like a more polished, modern product
it's not.. mixmeister way way better, and matched songs better.
Hiya Luke! This works for a radio show great, no doubt about that. It would probably save a lot of time, especially for someone who has not done this same thing for years in Ableton or another program. But at the end of the day, it is just a TOOL that you use. You ask what's left of the real DJing?
We have AI photography assistant programs, that will enhance your pictures and you can do most things with your smartphone. You can even buy a big DSLR camera, and use advanced software to develop your pictures on your computer. Replace the sky, enhance the photo, etc. But you still go out occasionally to the professional photographer. Why? Why is it, that even with a crappy camera, those people can make a very very good photo? Because the tools matter, but what matters more is the user behind that tool. The tool will not make you automatically better, but can make your job a lot easier.
Back to DJs, DJ.Studio is just another tool that a DJ could use to enhance and speed up his workflow. Cut out the boring part, so to speak. But DJs do a lot more than just take two tracks, decide how to switch over and do it. Those tracks needed to be chosen (careful curation is the hallmark of a good DJ), fitting the occasion, the place, the theme, making it work together. As far as I understand, this tool will not SELECT your tracks. And sure, you could let it go crazy over Beatport, but there are so many tracks there, I would bet it would turn out pretty bad for the AI to choose good tracks :)
In the club I would assume the DJ would need to read the crowd, and maybe alter the set based on that. If he can do it realtime with a tool like this, great. But I doubt these tools will replace the DJ there either.
I am also very enthusiastic about technology, like you, but see it as a tool to enable me to do things more easily, be it DJing or photography or something else. AI algorithms can find optimal cut points, calculate energy level and BPM, cut the base or the vocals from a track (stems). These enable lots and lots of great new things to do with music. Maybe even enable more people to enter the field of DJing and try it out. Speed up the process for DJs. But I don't see it will replace the human element in there. Genuine human creativity is extremely hard to replace, and we do not currently have any sort of AI that could do it (ChatGPT is also just "faking it", albeit very efficiently for most use cases).
This seems pretty useful! Ive never made a mix in ableton so im oldschool like you haha. The auto mix did sound a little rough like the fade outs and blends werent that great but I feel like it just needs a little specialized tweaking on each transition and it would be golden! Very interesting how it converts to ableton with the automation and plugins already done.
Also I feel like this software would be good for mashups and edits

I think the App is really cool and I feel the same as you with it being such a useful and time saving tool for radio shows! Especially when on the move! I’m going to look into it for myself also!
With regards to live mixing/preparing with the App I think of what Afrojack said in your interview with him. “With current technology how far is premixed or not….? How far can you go with your preparation? Hot cues, Cue Points, loops? “
It’s also important to note like you both said, that it’s different from being on a big stage vs in a club, but that using all those tools is important even if it just ends up being labeled as a Afrojack or Laidback Luke “Mash Up”
In my mind I see it as ‘use the software to come up with the idea. Then spice up the mix by adding more samples, tracks or tricks to it and be open to Changing if the crowd doesn’t feel it.

And It’s like you said in your seminar! We make it as hard as we want to, and we should consistently push ourselves just like you do! We should use this as a tool to its maximum but still be “Human After All” at the end of the day.

Hey Luke. I am amazed by your mobile setup. Please explore more on the modular setup idea. It’s always great to explore new technologies but a mobile modular setup is always better than automix/pre mix. I know for the fact that EDM DJs do a lot of pre mixing. But we need to somehow incorporate new technologies into live situations. I am a producer but have a full time job. We need to simplify the workflow yet get our hands on real DJ. Still respect for what you’re doing.❤
Yes sir, I'm experimenting away as we speak. The dawn of new technology is upon us and will probably take off exponentially coming years. Add in the human feel and human touch and there can be really something unique there!
As a one who used Ableton to do a DJ mix.
This can save times in case you do an open format mixtape / long set. At least it can put each song in a right place (Instead doing it one by one for hours) and then you just export to Ableton and put you effort on transition like before if you prefer.

do you think softwares like this works better than wav files rather than 320k mp3? i read this few days ago, cause even if you can't heard the difference, there are still content of the track missing, due to compression.
I’ve spent a few weeks ( a couple of hours a day) curating a Disco soul set and I guess this could do it all within a few minutes,, but I did it because I enjoy the experimentation, there’s no fun in letting AI do it for you and the only reason I still dj is for the fun of it,,
But yes as someone else stated, how does it handle live drummer tracks as used in Soul, Funk and Disco tracks?
Great question and great stance! I actually fully agree. In my case, time and deadlines are often pressing so it's handy if I can free up a couple of hours here and there to say, produce, do a live DJ set, or communicate with you guys online! Soul, Funk and Disco is being worked on and I'm sure they'll have a proper algorithm for that soon.
Nice updates to the soft ware. when I trialed it, you could only transition for a limited overlap - like 30 seconds or so..
Yes, same here. I tried it a few months ago and found it very limiting. But it seems they've improved it a ton.

How good is the warping algorithm? In Abelton i would say around 50% of the time i need to always set the grid again manually as some of the songs don't align perfectly.
after watching this video I downloaded it to give it a try. program is definitely cool. I personally have been making mashups for years on multiple programs but I feel like this could be super easy user friendly program instead of a daw. I'm a rookie with daw software so I prefer to use mashup from mixed in key but dj.studio could easily replace that with how easy the program is to use. the transition lock is always on and I would like to cut clips of acapella and add the transitions/ effects as I please. With plugins on the way to this program could be the go to software for dj edits bootlegs ect.
If I don't want to use Ableton, what other options do i have for adding my voiceovers?
That program would be nice with a 3rd line to put voiceover/jingle or other stuff, specially if it's more radio show oriented. Also, a VST compatibility so you can master in the program directly (and why not add more effect like the one we find in DJ program already)

New subscriber I’m following along. I’m being more confused than I was when you started. These are just things. I would like to know I can use this with a DJ controller. I can create an upload these mixes on my controller. It is a Hercules 500. The software is Djuiced. My music would actually be from SoundCloud. Could I use this software with SoundCloud and all my other controllers/software?

I think this program is just mindblowing and especially the developers behind all that have to be just genius, but like you mentioned in the end I asked myself "So what is left for real djing?"
And I simply think that things like that should be absolutely banned from night clubs, festivals etc... or at least from the more underground an uncommercial scenes.
Dont get me wrong I love innovation and I am always very open for new technology but this is not something I would like to see when going out.
I am very open to using this application. I think it will streamline the way that I want to do canned mixes as well as provide tools for me to understand what transitions work better live than what is in the program. A lot of people I've noticed said that in pre-recorded mixes, you do lose the human aspect, the human feel of the mix but that is understandable. It depends on the utility when you use the program. If indeed it's for recorded or radio mixes, yes.. I think this works amazingly when you have to adhere to time limitations, but it doesn't replace doing it live, working a crowd, and getting genuine reactions from people. Needless to say, your song choice, transition time, choice of transition, etc. will differ when it's live.
I'm looking forward to using the trial period, but I'll go ahead and save my extra dollars to grab the one time license. After creating mixes on Logic Pro and Abelton, I'm looking forward to an application that will help me do more in what seems like less time.
You make such valid points Archie, and I fully agree! Hope you'll enjoy the trial version and I hope it will give you a proper bang for your buck once you grab the license! I wouldn't be promoting this if it wasn't good news. I'm currently obsessed with it in regards to radio mixes. Nothing beats that live feel though, just like you said!
My problem with it is... I like being more hands on, I love music, I love programing, I love finding the combinations and figuring out transitions. I want that control, I like being in the moment, not preprogramed, pants down sliding on the ice! I embrace tech... I think micro rigs are the future... just thought it might open up a space for a new breed of dj to get in, maybe a little disruption? different types of dj, ones you hear, listen to their musical tastes and the way they put it together. I left djing when CDs we're the format... returned when I saw a program on a tablet, Luke thank you for bringing this form factor to light... but, I believe djs should become more music obsessed than tech preoccupied, develop more diversity more uniqueness... instincts.... so the audience remembers you were different, something new.

I tried this app, I loaded a heap of rnb and hip hop tracks all with intro edits. It did a terrible job doing automatic transition. I couldn’t figure out how to adjust the beat grid got frustrated and deleted the app.
I trialed it too. AI is not better, at least not yet.

I tried it too, it's a paid ad. read my comment on it. i hope people don't fall for this junk...... You can't download the video mixes you make on this thing. you can only upload them to their specialized site, and i have to be brutally honest, it is the only reason why you would want this thing, being a Video DJ, and downloading the mixes you make, to play in pubs and clubs. is the thing that is missing. this program is NOT for Pro DJ's. and the price is astronomical. even at 50% off. the automix transitions are laughable. you can do better mixes just by dropping the volume. the mixes shown are not mixes picked by the Automix.
So excited that you had a chance to really dive deep into this software. I have been a HUGE SUPPORTER in helping push the info out about this game-changing software!
Unfortunately I don't have the type of clout, or reach as you do, but all in all I am excited for this guy to have made my dreams come true, by being able to bust out multiple mixes weekly for my Own Radio Station I am trying to launch, myself.

I can see myself using this as a DJ training tool too… what better way to easily hear a variety of transitions. Live performance will always be key though…

They nailed the UI I think, that is a real game changer, but the AI part I'm not comfortable with.
I hear you, and I'm oldschool. When it comes to AI, I'm afraid it will just get more and more coming years. I'm that old I remember the computers coming up and being terrified seeing the Terminator etc. But here we are, immersed in computers. Coming years we will only get more and more immersed by AI. Not because I want it to, but everything is pointing that way.
@@laidbackluke Yeah sadly seems like we are some times using it to solve the wrong issues. I'm get iffy by any kind of AI art. The biggest element in art is the human emotion. I think we can call Djing art. AI or let's just call it what it actually is: Machine Learning can be used as a great tool to extend the art for example @Joel-Haver 's animations. His art is the story behind them, he's a film maker but can't animate, still puts the effort in to draw it, and just let the machine connect the drawings. With Djing, the song selection, telling a story with a set, or even just making the energy flow is what's the most important, transitions only come after that. ML will never be able to actually do a set how a human would do it. My issue is that I'm worried that there will be a flow of low effort "mixes", youtube reupload channels that will just use this to steal music and build their audience, or we might even get to the point where WGA got. I think if used right, it can be helpful, maybe it puts two tracks together you never thought of before, and then you can play around with it, but sadly that is not how most people will use it. But the cat's out of the bag now. We can't really do anything about it, and will just need to live with it. Technology is good, even machine learning, just most of the time humanity uses it the wrong way

does it have stems ?
the key maching is limited to +1key or -1 key, which limit the creativity to mix in harmony with bigger key variations. also you cannot force the machine to avoid very different bpm between each track. that very important details who needs to be adressed and improved, but i tryed hundred and hundred dj software solution other the last 15 years, only looking for something like this.
Unbelievable, especially since it exports to Ableton! For a radio show no big deal using this application. When I think about radio in the US (for example) it is nothing but a programmed tracklist to expose the newest records. Then certain hours a radio station might have a "live mix" with a DJ in the studio. I think you should use this software but if you have a guest on the show the DJ (or yourself) should state this portion is "live" and record the segment live to give it that intimate feel with mixer effects, scratching, etc. Using this software for a booking (Club DJ set)... that's kind of controversial. I think it would be a great reference tool to see which records flow the best using their algorithm on correct keys, bpm, and tempo (climax) of the records but then take those records and mix them in real-time for sure.
This is great, but why can't I make an account without having to use google, microsoft, apple or facebook. I don't like that fact at all.
i'm not using ableton but audacity and yeah, 1 track = 1 hour of work
@8:58 - How come 4 tracks have 88 mix combinations ? shouldn't it have 1*2*3*4 = 24 mix combinations only ?
It is the way the algorithm approaches the problem from multiple sides at once. On really small numbers it has a few double-checks and always ends between 1*2*3*4 and 1*2*3*4*5 so between 24 and 120.
So dumb ppl are giving you hate-looking forward to part 2! I don’t think the mobile setup is for me, but why would anyone get triggered by someone else having fun lol. Too many ppl attaching identity to gear and operating out of some scarcity mindset. Life and music is abundant, friends. Mind your own business, leave your ego behind and enjoy the art.

I haven't seen anybody do a Hip Hop Mix in this new DJ Studio! Why is that can someone help me it's easy to do a mix when all the songs have the same beat😂😂
the automix funktion is sadly by far not perfekt. Especially when i mix hip hop trax or pop musik, i have to adjust them every single track cause not one mix fade out and in on 1
@Laidback Luke, you failed to mention that with this app/ software/ program that being able to customize your transitions with DJ. Studio is only accessible by paying for their full application. If one pays for just the initial retail $199.00 "Lite" version does not allow the user to access these features. Were you endorsed bor sponsred by them to demonstrate this? Why did you not mention this? This is not hate, strictly criticism as I watched this entire video and not once did you mention that these features are only available to people who pay for the full app at $499 retail or whatever deal that is offered at the time the potential customer is possibly looking to purchase this. I own a license this software so I know this first hand. I look forward to hearing your response.
So I hated on this software when it first came out.. Seemed like the only use case was for people like Laidback Luke to save time and effort when making their radio shows. I've been a DJ for a couple of decades.. House techno and breaks..first vinyl then usb/sd cards for digital decks. The nightclub I work at right now as a sound and lighting tech recently pivoted to doing hip-hop and Latin events and discontinuing house and techno. (The bar actually makes money now, and events sell like mad). I might not listen to that music in my spare time, but from an economic standpoint, it makes sense. The problem is that these deejays we now have all use Serato and they use noticible effects and scratching and really annoying hits from the Serato sampler on almost every mix. Whats really annoying is they always toss in some sample with a callout of their DJ name. Often at a nightclub, to open the night we might need to put on a prerecorded mix if the DJ hasn't showed up on time or during a DJ switchover about 70% of these Serato deejays always encounter a problem which might take a few minutes to figure out. I've asked a few of these deejays to bring in pre recorded sets that we can play during times like this. BUt even their home recordings use these ridiculous samples. I've come to figure out that they're using these samplers and effects as a crutch to get out of bad mixing skills... Or they're tossing in samples of their DJ name regularly because they're insecure or something. So those recorded sets are useless for me. I've tried recording some of these guys live, but we have the same problem. I've put together a hip hop mix myself, without using any of these stupid Serato horn samples or bad scratching. But tbh, I don't get paid to do that and it's a waste of my time. Plus i had to learn an entirely new way of mixing.. I'm used to long drawn out transitions that are meant to be seamless. But this style of music needs quick mixing between tracks. Sometimes only a 4-8 bar transition is possible. Plus vocals are much more prevalent in these songs so, quick mixes are a must or you're gonna get clashing vocals. I'm guessing thats why these DJs have resorted to covering up their mixes with annoying effects, horns and sirens and baaad scratching attempts..
This software is a great option for me to quickly generate passable mixes with a constant rotation of new music. (my hip hop mix is getting kinda played out after a few months tbh). Plus i don't use Ableton which would have been a good option to create a mix. I use Pro Tools and Cubase for my professional work.. and although I can create a mix with those DAWs, they were never intended for a use-case like that so it would be rather time consuming and clunky. And I'm not about to waste my money on buying an Ableton license just to make DJ mixes because Hip Hop and Latin DJs cannot give our club a clean mix of 1 hour without peppering them with all these flourishes to cover up their bad transitions. .
Looks like DJ Studio is selling their Pro perpetual license for the same price as their basic ..$99 ...that's a reasonable price. I dont think the club owner would have a problem paying for that.

Forget about it. Especially on festivals with "DJs" like Paris Hilton or the Osbourne kids ...they can't spin the records just waving with their hands to celebrate themselves. Most of the stuff is prerecorded just a few so it still live. Let me call it that way..if you don't see a vinyl assume just it is prerecorded in one or another way. Sadly
Seems cool but why need a DJ when the radio announcer can make his own mix now. It’s like a self checkout for DJing. The DJ is now a supervisor at best to double check AI 😂

Am I a fan of the new setup...No tbh but has nothing to do with hating. It's your reasoning that doesn't make sense. Once upon a time it was all about getting away from being tethered to external devices ie laptop & tablets because staring into a screen disconnects you from the crowd & reading the dance floor but now that the manufacturers that you're affiliated with don't have standalone gear all of a sudden the narrative switches & now squinting into a 5" screen is "the future"???
When you started using Denon you caught a lil hate from the Pioneer fanboys but the Denon faithful rejoiced & you even made a bunch of Pioneer fanboys transition to Denon because they had the hardware & feature set to back it up. Now you have Pioneer & Denon users up in arms because it simply doesn't make sense Luke. I've heard you say that it was all about having that physical connection with the music...touch & feel the music. Well nothing is further from that than having no jog wheels ir platters. You're literally a button pusher.
Neural Mix literally has the worst sounding stem separation there is so if it was about stems then why not turn to the cream of the crop?

Umm so you go from being a great dj to being a behind the scenes mix editor for Skynet. To me, if this is doing the work for you then where is Laidback Luke. Looking at this I can be you with a few clicks of the mouse.
I was very enthusiastic after seeing your demo vid at ADE 2023. I do my own podcast mixes in Ableton, but also struggle some times to find enough time to make my mixes as proper as I want. The promise of this helping making a mix 3 times as fast clearly triggered me to give it a go. But honestly I think the software needs way more development to get to a level I was hoping it to be.
At the moment it can't handle mixes which also include ambient tracks. An instrumental intro in a track always result in issues. I don't mind giving the software a helping hand getting the music in cue, but not being able to listen to a mix in loop and beatmatch by ear is pretty frustrating as it hinders me to hear my adjustments directly. Also not being able to select a track within a mix for editing stands in the way of my workflow. I need to hear the results of my editing directly and not having to stop and play again.
If you are looking for something which helps setting up simple mixes with simple transitions. This can be a solution. But if your mixes are more challenging and advanced, its better to stick to your DAW. Also because you need to export it into your DAW if you want to add talks and jingle's anyway.
At this point, less overthinking and being too critical on my mixes within Ableton turned out to be the biggest time saver. But i am curious to see where DJ.Studio will go. Perhaps I will give it another try after another year or so.

@@laidbackluke I've already shared these thoughts to their support a while back also. I fully embrace the idea and love to endorse it as it is a Dutch product.
I really think this can be a game changer (or time saver for that matter) and testing alone is also a big part of the fun. But purchasing a license, for that I need more then what it can do at this point.

Before you know it, people will be depositing a quarter in a machine, and then it will play some music...
I used to make monthly mixes for soundcloud but it´s so easy right now. Anyone can do it. So I stopped those mixes and only do a livestream sometimes.
All you are doing is helping to end the career of DJs, there are already tons of places that refuse to hire a DJ because even Spotify now has auto DJ but if they can now make their own mixes we are completely f-ed.
It looks like a cool program saves a lot time but it takes away dj creativity.
