In order to encourage free speech (i.e. genuine opinions), I feel like Twitter needs to somehow incentivize civil conversation/debate. Users don't want to participate in free speech if they get bullied/cancelled. Something about the current likes & retweets system encourages users to post tweets they know will "perform" well, so users become extreme caricatures of themselves and participate in lots of toxic, us-versus-them behavior.

There's little room for civil conversation or debate, given such a short character limit. To try and write something in-depth and thoughtful with all the necessary context is like trying to write a novel with sticky notes. Pretty much the only things you can do are quick and witty comebacks, or linking to an article or picture that goes more in-depth. The factors you mention among others definitely aggravate the platform's uncivility.

I don't use twitter, but tumblr had a flock of new users recently (plenty of artists). Tumblr is now also selling verification marks, two at a time. One of my mutuals has eight of them right now
Tbh I feel like at this point, twitter has such a notorious reputation that anyone who would be interested in making an account has already made one. The only way for twitter to have any meaningful growth is squeezing more out of the users already on there, or somehow making the app even more addictive

Watching this I'm wondering if I'm just a simple person... I just buy the generic, I don't own a piece of clothing over $20, I don't want to buy a brand knockoff, just cheap $5 shirts($8 if I'm feeling spicy).... I have an account, but I've basically never've used it. At first because I couldn't choose who to follow and where to comment, I love a LOT of stuff that if not opposed is definitely kinda separated on some extremes. So then came the moment I wanted to participate when exciting things were happening, but I've seen the toxicity and just left. In real life I may be an incendiary type of character, I argue a lot with people who I think deserve a chance to speak but also an opportunity to learn (yeah, yeah, I'm idealistic and NEED for justice to prevail) So I felt like engaging with people online who maybe were just trolls and nothing would ever come from it wasn't a worthwhile task 🙋🏼♀️
I think another thing we can gleam from this is just how out of touch the top percent 0.0001% is with the world and what people want from a social media. In what world was "buy this special mark" meant for people to distinct a online presence suppose to be capitalized. Not even mentioning the other shit things Elon has been doing to employees and the direction of the application. The selling of a brand name or tapping into people's desire for status is interesting, to me,, and reminds me of earlier in the week when my mother bought a new Michael Cores purse. I asked her why she liked MC when she's just paying for the name alone, and twice as much as she would another purse not on brand, but she didn't give much else than a simple, "I like them." She likes the name. And probably, the status it gives her subtly.

The problem is that twitter is a niche social media, i have an account but never use it. If you look at facebook even tho people say it dying still more than a billions users still use it, instagram is not as popular as a few years ago but still billions use it, tik tok is growing massively and is massively addicting,and also billions of active users. Now look at twitter have not even half a billion users, and only 10% of users post something theres no reliance or loyaty to the platform if it dies ´no one even cares´.
They should charge a verification fee (one time payment) that's enough for them to profit and process your documentation (ID etc). Different verification badges with different prices for regular people or real celebrities / brands with different tiers etc would be convenient as well.

I think if you want to be a verified organisation then you should have to pay a large lump sum of money rather than a subscription. Then that will make it easier for Twitter to distinguish between fakes and real accounts while still making the platform profitable.
He should stick to selling million dollar solutions to 10,000 dollar problems to people with good intentions about the planet and things. Personally, and this is very biased, I would not save twitter. The way the algorithm works plus the inability to remove the "trending" tab from view is nothing but a drain on mental health and creativity. Tumblr is the closest site to being possibly maybe kinda almost mentally healthy, and even that takes careful following, liberal blocking, and the wonderful ability to keep my dash chronological and filled only with folks I like and have vetted. Social media is not designed for human happiness. Algorithms are ESPECIALLY not designed for happiness. They are designed for rage clicks.

I only have 100 follower, so it doesn't bother me much.
I don't think he knows what he's doing. I don't think he ever did, just kinda got lucky his whole life and now his idiocy is finally starting to become more well known to the public.
