    Most Digital8 camcorders *can* play analog Video8 and Hi8 recordings, but not all of them, especially the lower-cost models from the mid-2000s. The Wikipedia article about Digital8 has a list of which models do support playing analog tapes. Also, a minor correction: Digital8 was introduced in 1998, not 1995.

      Good to know! And thank you for the clarity on the date. I’m gonna pin this comment so anyone watching can see the correction as well, and thank you so much for watching!

      There are a lot of people saying my Digital 8 Sony DCR TRV255E can’t play analog video 8 and Hi8 tapes but yes can do it. My parents have a lot of Video 8 tapes recorded with this camcorder without any problem.

    I had the Sony tr3200e and it lasted 33 years with regular use. No complaints there. I was lucky to digitise all my tapes about 3 months before the cam died. My plan is to get another and make a short with it.

      I had digital 8 growing up but sony didn';t tell people some of them dropped the analog playback and then tapes got erased some digital 8 tapes dropped that chip and then people would think there tape was blank and loose a precious family moment. @@EricJKuhns

    It makes me wonder if newer generations are even going to experience such nostalgia when it comes to old technology. I feel like not as much value is going to be put into a piece of hardware like we used to.

    Another killer trip down memory lane! For us Geezers, it was the old, giant VHS camcorders, but the concept is the same - so much to go through and catalog (lots of missing the trick due to start the recording too late!)

      @EricJKuhns  Год назад

      Aw man while going through footage I saw so many clips that were cut too short or filming started too late lol. And I would love to see the old geezer tapes!!

    My aunt gave me her TVR-36 HI8 from 22 years ago that came with a tape in it. I plan to document my cross country road trip to Maine using this camera, and I’m trying to figure out what I need to do to prepare for this, so I really appreciate your help. Definitely need to find a midway box to transfer the upcoming footage to my computer

    I had the digital 8 as a kid, the hi8 tapes never worked right in my camera, so I always associated hi8 with analog and dig8 as footage to put on my computer

    • @EricJKuhns
      @EricJKuhns  Год назад

      By the names it would seem digital should have been easier to put on your computer over analog but they generally ripped the same way (just needed the right camera-to-tape footage). Trying to play different tapes on different cameras has always seemed to be a headache though and to rip, especially as the different formats released. Thanks for watching, Branden!

    Omg. I am from the same era as you. I lived in oak cliff when it was hood. I cant believe how ?uch its changed. Its super gentrified now. I dont mind but those high rent prices are suck. Ive got 2005 oak cliff Street footage but no bangers on tape. This was when i was just starting. My flat game was on point bc we didn't really have spots out here. Ill try to get these hi8 developed. Ill share them if youre interested.

    The best way to capture your 8mm tapes is to use a firewire card that plugs into your pcie port on your pc motherboard then capture using capable software and an actual firewire cable to get the best DV quality!

    Hi8 / Digital8 has been a pain in the ass for decades. Shot a lot of dumb teenage videos and then of course the camera's motorized ejection screws up and you have no way to play anything back. I just dropped $100 on a huge Video8 & VHS deck and not all tapes will work. In addition, trying to find a cheap capture solution that worked will with Linux didn't pan out. Settled on dropping another $100 for a used Blackmagic Intensity Pro 4k. More features than I need but at least it will accept component inputs.

    Great Video Eric. I wanted to ask advice. With great expense etc I have got most of my tapes/footage transferred to mp4 files. MY Question is...Can I make the quality any better, especially the over saturated bright light.....?? HELP PLEASE...

    • @EricJKuhns
      @EricJKuhns  9 месяцев назад +1

      Sorry, I missed responding to this comment! There are certainly filters and LUTz you can download to help this, but one really cool new technology that has surfaced is AI reconstruction of videos. There are a few companies out there that have made software to do this, but the most rusted is Adobe, as they recently developed an experimental AI-powered upscaling tool that greatly improves the quality of low-resolution GIFs and video footage. Hope this helps and thank you for watching!
