In this turorial a mini DV camcorder is used. Since the mini DV is a digital cassette, using the a/v analogue output as shown worsens the overall capture quality. The best way to preserve it is by using the DV in/out shown at 2:56. That output is available on every old digital video cameras and it's also known as IEEE1394 or FireWire . Unfortunately only Mac and some PCs have a thunderbolt port ( not to be confused with USB) retro-compatible with the old FireWire/ IEEE1394 port. Some online stores offer fake usb / FireWire adapters but they don't work because usb and FireWire are different standards and never compatible.
Exactly what I was thinking. Firewire card for a PC is ~$20. If you have a DV recorder like the one used in this video, you can also use it as an input device to get digital files off an analog device like a Hi8....but I'll admit that I use an I-O Data capture device when importing analog video from my Hi8 on to my PC.
Yeah, I was just thinking this. By using the composite (Yellow cable with Red and White audio), you're converting a digital signal to analog and then back to digital again. Using the FireWire method yields the best quality, but it's cumbersome if you don't have the right PC/Mac with PCIe or Thunderbolt capabilities.
I have come to the same realization after using this specific capture card method after my Windows Vista computer died before I could convert all my tapes. When watched on a computer with this method, text in the footage is blurry and unreadable so this is simply not a good route to go for capturing memories on MiniDV. Now I'm left wondering if those video to microsd devices are good enough or should I invest in an old laptop with FireWire port 🤔

I have the same camcorder. I simply connect the Firewire out of the camcorder to the Firewire connection in my PC. The Firewire card in my PC cost me about $30.00. The software I use for capturing is called Virtual Dub, a free program that works with all versions of Windows. Using Firewire, you get an exact digital copy of what is on the mini-DV tape. Can't do better than that! 😊

I have a Hi8 Samsung SCL700 and one tape cuts off about an hour in and it says "R.EMG/Eject" and another tape won't even play it says "L.EMG/Eject" other tapes play fine, so I am assuming it's a tape issue not camcorder, how can I fix this?

Hi, I have a sony handycam. I bought the equipment that you have listed here. The black cord plug is too big for my input on the camcorder. Do they make an attachment for this to bridge this? If so, could you send me the link? Thank you. I have been trying to do this for so long and have bought so many different things. I am so frustrated with it all.
i have a camcorder that had no way to export video unless i purchase its original docking station for £200 on ebay! Used the AV out cable that had those male red/white/yellow plug, bought the adapter as suggested, and it worked perfectly! One note i'd like to add is when starting to record on OBS, make sure the internal mic of your pc/mac is turned off.
You have a handy cam with “I Link” which is FireWire, you can get thunderbolt to FireWire adapter to connect the camera to the Mac. Seeing as it’s a Sony handy cam you can most likely also connect a vcr to the camera using its av connector then FireWire to the Mac to capture vhs if you want.
Thank you SO much from this! This might be silly to ask but do you know if theres any way to remove the timestamp/date embedded in the videos taken from my camcorder??
One question: I have some 8mm cassettes where I recorded videos with a Sony Handicam (I don't remember the model). Then it broke and I threw it away. Quite a few years have passed since then. Now I bought a similar Sony handycam (although a little smaller but the same, from HI8) because I wanted to convert those cassettes to digital but when I tried to play them I got streaks and sounds, similar to those of a TV when the cable goes out. Then I recorded a few seconds over what was recorded to see if the problem continued, but no. The little that I recorded did look good. Apparently I bought the camera for nothing. What could be causing this problem?
Hi8 and 8mm cassettes are not the same - I believe Hi8 is an updated version of 8mm, so you’re probably having issues converting because those formats aren’t compatible. I can’t be for sure since I don’t know the model of your camera, but I’m guessing it’s that!
You can do an hour’s video without memory issues? I tried on my mac mini M1 and it stops recording. So I use a Sony VRDMC5 to burn DVDs and then rip and convert files.
Hi :) i was wondering if your camera has a usb cable itself, as i have a sony handycam carl zeiss vario-tessar and it has one, but when i plug it into the pc i cant see the camera
my old sharp camcorder doesn't have an Audio/Video single input so I used an RCA red, white, yellow cable outputs (since the do send audio and video signals) from the camcorder to connect the the video capture card same RCA color inputs then USB to my MacBook. I used Quicktime to capture the video and audio. The Audio is very faint and not as high sound. Maybe I should use OBS, but need to figure out the configuration since , again I dont have a single audio/video input on the camcorder. Any suggestions?
The cable method you’re describing sounds like it should work to me! I just tried using QuickTime as a test and it seems like the audio is being defaulted to using my MacBook mic (so I can hear all the external camcorder sounds as well as the audio from the footage), but maybe try increasing the volume on the camcorder and seeing if that works at all?
Hey! I have everything setup axactly the same. All the cables and adapters exactly the same. I am using a laptop though. I don't get any image display. Could anyone help please? Quick question.. my camcorder is missing its battery, however I do own a cable that is plugged onto the cam and then into the outlet, that gets the cam going, can I still convert my mini dv without the battery?
Unfortunately, I don't have the right plugs on my Sony camcorder. Is there another way to connect? At Euronics they can digitalize my tape for 10 Euros per cassect, which I think way too expensive. I've got many tapes.
I’d need to see it to be sure, but if it doesn’t, I’m assuming that the camcorder wasn’t meant to be connected to an another source and relied on its tapes being played on a tape deck or something like that.
I tried this with my SONY DCR- TRV828E camera but my footage was in black and white and had a lot of noise, do you think using an S-video chord would fix that.
Yes, you could try that! The method in the video has worked for several of my camcorders, but this whole process really depends on your camcorder input/output - another method may work better depending on the type.
hi audrieeee i just wanna ask if did u ever had a problem in your minidv camcroders where it says "use new adapter or reinstall" I don't know why but i did all kind of things but still it's blinking fast and it won't open unless it's charging
how do you flip flop between camcorder and regular footage. The problem I keep running into is that the program I’m using (adobe premiere) isn’t letting me add both footage from both devices into the same video when I edit, please let me know if you ever ran into this problem, fan of your videos. Thanks !
I just got this camera! I charged the camcorder but the screen is still showing up as blue. Is there a way to charge the battery or do I need to replace the whole battery each time?
Hi Audrie ! Thanks for your tutorial ! I have the same camcorder and I did the transfer step by step thanks to this video. I only have one problem. The image is in blu on OBS when I press PLAY. Maybe I did something wrong but I don't know.. Maybe you know why it's in blue. And thanks for all you videos !!
I don't get how this method doesn't have the problem of interlacing? (choppy horizontal lines). 🤔 Converting miniDV to Digital always demands this De-interlacing process, which throws half of the horizontal scan lines of the video, resulting in losing that super smooth motion that miniDV/VHS has. So, I don't know if it's the camera, the OBS software, or the MAC here that do something different, so from the get go- there's not interlacing lines problem while sampling a tape.... 🤔
Hi! I used OBS successfully to do this once before but I can’t get it to work again. It’s not letting me add the capture device as a source. It only shows my laptop camera and the OBS virtual camera. Any way to fix this?
Somehow my footage is now shown on the computer (it’s black only) but it somehow records the audio. Any idea why it’s not working even if I choose all the same settings?
Hii the video was really informative but i have a problem. I did everything like you did with the cables and the settings but when i look at the recorded vid on my laptop it doesnt run smoothly. It looks like a really old cartoon with a film made out of separate drawings one after another. Any idea why that might be or a solution??
@@Samxglez I think I found a solution for my situation, I muted the additional 'Audio' line she sets up in the tutorial, since OBS showed that sound was already coming from my camcorder. I think one of the two sources was causing a lag, so just using the camcorder audio seems to work. Although, I will sometimes get stretches in the video with no sound and I have to re-record. where can i buy something like that???
Unfortunately, I don't have the right plugs on my Sony camcorder. Is there another way to connect? At Euronics they can digitalize my tape for 10 Euros per cassect, which I think way too expensive. I've got many tapes.
Thank you so much for this helpful tutorial video!
do you know if this will work (sound wise) if i don't have an audio jack and just a mic jack? i have like a super old panasonic camcorder
I’d need to see it to be sure, but if it doesn’t, I’m assuming that the camcorder wasn’t meant to be connected to an another source and relied on its tapes being played on a tape deck or something like that.
Got the cables! and am now ingesting using my old camera that my mum got me when I was a little lad. thank you!!! \
Hey, only the audio is appearing on OBS for me, any trouble shooting tips?
same any one figure this out???

try attaching yellow cable to red. i have the same problem, but switching the cables works for me.
hi audrieeee i just wanna ask if did u ever had a problem in your minidv camcroders where it says "use new adapter or reinstall" I don't know why but i did all kind of things but still it's blinking fast and it won't open unless it's charging
how do you flip flop between camcorder and regular footage. The problem I keep running into is that the program I’m using (adobe premiere) isn’t letting me add both footage from both devices into the same video when I edit, please let me know if you ever ran into this problem, fan of your videos. Thanks !
Is there any possible way to be able to get the date and time stamp when you digitalize the footages?
The time stamp is usually a setting on the camcorder that you turn on while recording (in my experience), so if you had that setting off, then no.
Hey, is it even better to use a s-video cable on top of the red yellow and white one or doesnot it do something?
If yours has that input, you can try plugging it in and seeing how it looks - mine doesn’t fit that so I didn’t use it!
Under devices, I only see Facetime HD Camera and OBS Virtual Camera. How can I add AV to USB 2.0?
I SWEAR I WAS THINKING OF YOU FEW WEEKS AGO. WELCOME BACK!!!!!
One year later just felt right 🙈
could u do one for the SDR-H80 please?
the device does not appear on obs when i try to set it
it only shows my web cam. What could be the problem?
Converting miniDV to Digital always demands this De-interlacing process, which throws half of the horizontal scan lines of the video, resulting in losing that super smooth motion that miniDV/VHS has.
Absolutely loved watching this incredibly beautiful video 😎😎
☺️☺️☺️
Somehow my footage is now shown on the computer (it’s black only) but it somehow records the audio. Any idea why it’s not working even if I choose all the same settings?
Same happening here
same problem too
Everything worked perfectly. Thank you!
This was so helpful! But for some reason my audio isn’t working
the same
This was so helpful and I love the way its edited!
Glad it was helpful 🫶🏽
Hii the video was really informative but i have a problem. I did everything like you did with the cables and the settings but when i look at the recorded vid on my laptop it doesnt run smoothly. It looks like a really old cartoon with a film made out of separate drawings one after another. Any idea why that might be or a solution??
Did you ever fix the issue I’m running into the same problem the audio is fine but the video is really choppy
Is one of the cable ports left loose? Because you connected red white and yellow but not the black one?
The black one called s-video cable. And using the black one instead of the yellow one gives you a slightly better visual improvement.
Okay so this is me\... i have my mini DV from when i was a kid.. i love it! and then I wanted to use it again and thank you for this!!
Is there any way to fix an audio echo occurring when a recording SONY handycam to digital video with OBS recording?
I’m having the same issue
I’m having the same issue
@@Samxglez I think I found a solution for my situation, I muted the additional 'Audio' line she sets up in the tutorial, since OBS showed that sound was already coming from my camcorder. I think one of the two sources was causing a lag, so just using the camcorder audio seems to work. Although, I will sometimes get stretches in the video with no sound and I have to re-record. So overall, not a perfect system, but it just takes patience and troubleshooting. I'm using a sony handycam digital 8.
@@rachelsfoodventures54 Thank you I will try that out because I have a Sony handycam that uses hi8 cassettes and I hope that this will work for me.
@@rachelsfoodventures54 How do you do this?: "I muted the additional 'Audio' line she sets up in the tutorial, since OBS showed that sound was already coming from my camcorder." Thanks!
❤❤❤❤❤ I was searching about this for weeks to find latest video. I'm glad you just uploaded about 1 day ago!
did it work in windows 11? cause i search for the drivers for av captures and find the driver for win 10 and before only

Can you also play videos on the camera itself? We don’t have those cables. We would like to watch it in the device 😊
can you please help me on why the video is recording but not the audio for obs??

Same problem, any advice or help please, thanks
@@mazzymaria your red and yellow wires are out in properly?
Is there a way to make the video stream less laggy?
I just got the Sony VR108 and it only has the S Video and ''A/V out'' port, so the items you used in this video (Video capture card and the RSA cable) should work right? 😭
Hello, I only had the same cables as you. I purchased the video capture card and RSA cable and everything worked just fine. I couldn't believe it actually worked. Good luck and I hope everything works out for you.
@@OhYesItsAce Yup, it works for me too! I've almost done half of my tapes so far
the sony 330 has only an audio and video separate , not together
You probably need to use a different cable then - maybe FireWire to usb
it worked but i don’t want to record the large timestamp at the top of my footage how do i get rid of it? i looked all over the internet
I loaded the OBS software , somethings are different I guess due to a new upgrade, I bought the exact cords and followed along with each step and I don’t see the video that is playing on my camcorder on my laptop, anyone have any ideas as to what I may have done wrong or missing? Thank you…. I changed a cord and now it works, not all cords work on the same camera
im having the same problem
Same with me it's piccin up the audio but not footage... I'm pretty sure it has to do with something the cables
@@DRACOFURY it actually is!! it worked for me when i just reinserted the cables.. i recommend getting new ones or just keep adjusting them.. if not you can find other methods like the firewire thing(?)
Welcome back yay!❤❤😊
☺️ thanks for watching
Can you please show how to fix the colour after connecting.
The other methods we tried did not work only this method worked and I would really like to know how to fix the colour part of it
Great video! I hoped this would work for me, but the camcorder is stuck in 'PC mode' so the recording doesn't show up on OBS.
my screen of video is stuck on black screen but audio plays just fine. any help pls?
did you find any solution for this? i have the same problem
try attaching yellow cable to red. it works for me.
