Ensure your PC has a Thunderbolt port (not just a USB-C/charging port). Visit the support page of your computer (support.dell.com, support.lenovo.com, etc) and verify that your drivers are up to date. Sometimes the Thunderbolt driver is separate and needs to be installed manually. Also check that your BIOS is up to date. If you're getting blue screens when you plug in, this is the solution. 2. Check the settings in your BIOS as there may be a setting in there to allow data over the Thunderbolt port. Here is an example link that shows the settings: www.dell.com/support/article/en-us/sln305418/restructuring-of-usb-and-thunderbolt-settings-on-new-bios-version?lang=en There is also usually an app within Windows called the "Thunderbolt(TM) Software " and make sure it is set to "Always Allow" like this: www.caldigit.com/thunderbolt-3-devices-in-windows-10-platform/ 3. If your camcorder still does not communicate, then you may need to install a driver, although this is extremely rare. Here is a good webpage that may help you troubleshoot FireWire specific drivers: www.studio1productions.com/Articles/Firewire-1.htm Additionally if you installed a special FireWire driver you may want to uninstall it and try the built in Windows driver as that may be all you need. You can also try installing a legacy FireWire driver by following these directions: www.startech.com/en-us/faq/firewire-cards-windows-legacy-driver-swap 4. Here is a good guide from Sony which has a few other troubleshooting steps: www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/camcorders-tape-camcorders/dcr-hc44e/articles/00235677
As someone who has works in the video industry and has captured tons of DV content via FireWire this is an EXCELLENT video that is really detailed! Nice work!
I have 100 old tapes I needed to capture, some of which are DV and some HDV. I thought I was out of luck until I found your video, which pulled it all together for me. Thanks so much!
Hi - I assume your not using a 12th Gen Cpu or windows 11 pro. I have at least 100 various tapes. hi-8 & hdv & a lot of mini DV tapes converted from the old standard 8 and super 8 cine film. Hence my spanking brand new pc with 14tb Hard drives on the bench doing nothing. If I dont sort this out soon will have to buy a secong hand win 7 or so PC. just to import AVI files Thanks in advance for any info waht you did or used. gpop
Amazing video!!! Finally got my firewire card installed to capture video from my old Vixia HV40 Camcorder, intending to capture using Adobe Premiere 2024, only to discover they have deleted all capturing from the program! Adobe help was no help. Searched youtube and google a lot before finding this video. Having the firewire card I was able to skip through all of those wire connections. HV Split 0.77 Beta worked great. The video was still too large at that point for Premiere Pro to do anything with. Ran it through Handbrake 1.7.3 and it compressed it way down. Now it imported and worked in Premiere Pro just fine, but there was no longer any point to that, lol. Awesome stuff!
Thank you for making this, I can now restore my family videos. I had a faulty 1394 firewire cable, but knowing what programs to run and how to connect to the computer helped alot.
You are VERY thorough! You're easy to understand; you annunciate your words; you are an excellent teacher, and watching your video did not feel like a chore. Thanks for such a well thought-out tutorial. Also, thank you for going the extra mile by providing all of the info that may be needed if things don't go as planned with installation of software. That was very thoughtful of you.
Hi Scott, thank you for the information and the helpful videos. I browsed through the previous comments and didn't find the question I had. Is it possible to go from Thunderbolt to HDMI? I have a Dell laptop that only has USB or HDMI. I tried to use a 2019 Mac Book Pro running Ventura 13.6.3 with the Intel chip and it didn't recognize the Sony DCR TRV525. It recognized the Thunderbolt 2-3 and the Thunderbolt to Firewire but not the Sony camcorder or the mini DV to Firewire. Are you aware of any problems with this Mac trying to transfer videos? Thank you very much.
Hi Scott! Good news and an update on getting WinDV to work on a Dell Laptop (G7700) running Windows 11, i7 CPU. It would not work using the Gen 3 Thunderbolt port on the laptop, so I purchased the DELL Thunderbolt Docking Station model WD22TB4. I connected the Apple Dongles directly into the new Docking Station TB port, connected the TB Docking station to the TB port on the laptop and gave it a try. IT WORKED! I am now transferring mini tapes as I author this update. I hope this helps others. The laptop is running Intel generation 10 CPU. Next, I am going to see if I can get it to work on my new ASUS Z690 Motherboard desktop running Intel i7 generation 12 CPU.
Thanks for the update. This confirms the process I documented in my newer video for 10th and 11th gen is working. I expect if you try the same with your 12th gen, it will not work.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but your mini dv camera is the Canon Vivia HV40 correct? For those who have this camera it has an HDMI port. You could save yourself the time and captured video through there and save time and money with all the extra steps you outlined. But for those who don't have this camera, the steps you outlined are good.
Yes if the camera has HDMI, you can get a USB capture device for that HDMI connection but it's best to capture the raw data from the tape in original quality rather then capturing the playback of the video stream. The capture card will either be capturing at a higher bitrate then the video was recording in (wasting space) or most likely a lower bitrate which will cause a reduction in quality.
@@ScottSchramm You are correct in that method. I was thinking using my elgato 4k capture card but not everyone has a capture card. So your right. I'm glad someone is showing the correct way, I was pulling out my hair with other content creators telling people to use external RCA capture cards, specifically the one you X'd out in your video.
Scott, I have an old Sony Hi-8mm camcorder, CCD-TRV52. It features ANALOG RCA Video /audio outputs ONLY. I have a Dell XPS PC 8950, but it does not have any hardware to accept an analog video input stream, nor do I have any software to process it into MP4 files. Can you recommend the best way to solve this issue with the gear I'm currently mentioned to convert all my family videos?
I have been having trouble getting hdvsplit.exe working on my win10 laptop via firewire to my Sony HDV camcorder, and thanks to your video, I realized that I didn't have k-lite on it. I usually have that installed on my other machines, but until now, i never realized that hdvsplit.exe requires it to "See" the camera! thank you!
Update Scott! I decided to try an old DELL XPS i5 desktop that I upgraded the OS from Win 7 to 10. I added a firewire port expansion card and everything worked using Firewire cable from Sony 4 pin to Firewire expansion card. I successfully used the Sony DV camera and WinDv program with zero issues. Slow, very slow for a 1 hour tape, but that was to be expected using this method. I am going to try my newer win 11 Dell Laptop as soon as the TB DS arrives this Thursday, I will let you know how it works.
I love that fact that the mass consumer once has access to an Indexed video format cameras which was then pulled off the market and never allowed back into the mass consumer market. Everything since then has to be either Proxied or re encoded to something else. DV and later DVCPRO literally capture and transfer to your computer, edit and export that was it. Since the footage was INDEXED every software editor was able to play, edit and encode without any proxy files. The mass consumer is still waiting for a video Camera, DSLR that was as fast and proxyless as DV.
Scott - just discovered and played your video. Very helpful. I have an old Canon ZR200 with a video on minitape I want to transfer to my Dell XPS 13 9370. But I just discovered the Apple thunderbolt cables will not work with my Dell laptop. Since your latest update is about 9 months ago - any additional updates, i.e. other cables that will work with nonApple devices?
Nope, unfortunately I haven’t found any workarounds for newer generation laptops. I’m working on a new video now about how to find and use old systems.
thank you, you reply is much appreciated. I think what I may do is seek out a service. I discovered that I had a video recorded with my mom and self on it - she passed away some years ago - and I want to preserve it. A service may be the easiest for me at this point. thanks again, Marlene @@ScottSchramm
Scott, I think my problem may be with something that is not showing up in the WinDV program. I have deleted the original WinDV program from downloads and did a NEW download of Peter's WinDV 1,2,3 Zip. I unzipped the program, hit OPEN, and the program screen opens. I have nothing showing in Capt.file: box, so I typed in C:\users\User\Desktop\DVCapture. BUT, I never get the second screen to pop up which says SAVE AS, so the program may not be starting without that input???? Thoughts?
hey scott, great video! really explains everything i need to understand the setup. its unfortunately not working for me still. i have a 9th gen processor lonovo legion from about 2019, got the exact cables you suggest, and got everything on my computer that you said we would need. i have downloaded dozens of different softwares that should capture the video, but basically each time i use the software, the camera is detected, even sometimes showing an image, but then it will just tell me that i can't capture because of some 'capture driver' or something else. all the drivers are up to date, and it actually doesn't allow me to roll back the updates. on a software that it shouldn't work on, touch designer, i can actually stream the footage, but when i try to capture it, it records at maybe half speed and without audio. i feel like there's one tiny thing in the way of allowing me to capture it, but i have no idea what it could be, and after hours of troubleshooting i feel totally lost. not sure if you have come across a problem like this before - i read a lot of other comments - so i thought i would just send this comment through as a hail mary. let me know, i'm really hoping i'm just overlooking an easy solution, because it feels so close!
Hmm I haven't heard of this issue but the only thing I can think of is trying to uninstall the firewire driver and let Windows re-install the default one. There is also a "legacy firewire driver" that a lot of people suggest". I personally have never needed it and find it unnecessary, but it could be something to help if the default driver does not work for your setup. www.startech.com/en-us/faq/firewire-cards-windows-legacy-driver-swap
Hello! Love your video, but my computer does not have a thunderbolt port. :( is there another way I can do this without the videocapture device? Or do you have another video you could recommend to me that could help me? I'm afraid I'm a little lost
There is no other way. You need a laptop with Thunderbolt or a desktop with an open PCIe card slot. Also watch the end of my latest video: ruclips.net/video/u3OIcw4QH1w/видео.html
Hi Scott. I've tried both WinDV and HDV Split and both say "Camera is not detected/connected". Before I go out and buy more cables in case these ones are bunk, are there any software issues I can troubleshoot? I'm running Windows 11 Home. Thanks!
I am having trouble copying from my Panasonic NV-GS15 camcorder to my laptop. The recordings were recorded in HD in 2007 when copying using clear click video2dgital to USB. recordings are so poor - wanted to edit and view them on bit screen tv for elderly parents 😢. Any suggestions
Hi my friend, your video was very helpful, I have a focusrite pro 14, but I have not been able to connect my interface doing everything you show in the video, I have added an adapter from usb 3.0 to type c port since my laptop does not come with type c port, but nothing works. when I connect everything I get a message that says the following. "the functionality of the thunderbolt device may be limited". can you help me?
Your message doesn’t make sense. The interface you have uses FireWire and you mentioned your laptop doesn’t have USB-C but you got an error message about the thunderbolt being limited, even though thunderbolt 3 uses the USB-C plug. And you said convert it to USB 3.0 which isn’t possible so either you are mixing up the ports or your laptop isn’t supported.
@@christianangulo3440 That isn’t going to work. Thunderbolt and USB-C are backwards compatible with USB-A devices but the adapters you bought will not make Thunderbolt work with USB-A. There are ZERO possible ways to make Thunderbolt or FireWire work with a USB-A port.
Do you know if this will also work to export Digital-8 viideo via the DV link? I bought one of the last Sony Digital8 cameras that has a DV 1394 mini output. Model number DCR-TRV480E. Thank you for the video, this is just what I was looking for, thank you for taking the time to do such a simple to follow breakdown.
Yes, this same process will work with Digital 8. But not all Hi8 will support it because Hi8 is analog. Most Digital 8 is backwards compatible so you should be good.
@@ScottSchramm thank you for the reply, i'm going to give it a test. I'm curious if the camera I own converts video8 from analog to digital as part of the process. I'll give it a punt. I also bought an Elgato to, so i'm covered both ways (that is if I can get the Elgato to work on Wimdows 11. I hear its hit and miss.) i'll let you know the outcome.
Hello Scott, just a quick question. If my laptop dosen't have the lighting usb-c port, does using an adapter from regular to lighting usb-c still work.
if the system does not have an LSI 1394 controller, then it will not be in the Device Menager. I have a Gigabyte Aorus 15P laptop, with a Thunderbolt™ 4 controller, in the USB Type-C form factor on board. But, so far I have not been able to tame the Panasonic NV-MX500 miniDV camera to Thunderbolt™ 4. Although I have exactly the same set of cables from Apple as yours, which I bought on Amazon (not on Aliexpress). But, I haven't checked the Bios yet. But Thunderbolt Center doesn’t see anything.
@@ScottSchramm Thanks for the tip. Yes, my laptop has a Gigabyte Aorus 15P, 11th Gen processor. All that remains is to buy a suitable Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station.
Could you please help me? I have a MSI GT72 6QD with everything updated and installed as per your guides but I can´t still see it in either WinDV or HDVSplit. 1394_OHCI_LegacyDriver installed... I don´t know what else to do... I followed all your troubleshooting but still nothing. This laptop has Thunderbol 3.
Your laptop does have Thunderbolt 3, and your processor is Intel 6th gen with is good. My guess is the issue with permissions or your drivers. Look for the Intel Thunderbolt app and make sure the permissions are to set to allow the connection. You may also need to check in the bios. If that is all good then try uninstalling the legacy driver, reboot, and and let Windows install its own built in driver. One of those things should fix it.
Hi ! Wonderful video!!! I have a Sony Handycam DCR-TRV camera, it fortunately has a direct USB output I believe, but I was wondering if the process would be any different with this cable? I will try to replicate everything in the video anyway, but it would be of great help if you had any idea on how to transfer the footage from a Sony Handycam DCR-TRV miniDV tape into my computer. Cheers!
The USB port is for photo transfer and does not work for video. You'll need to follow the process show in this video (or any of my other recent videos) to use Thunderbolt or FireWire to capture the video. The process is not any different for your camcorder.
Codecs should only be needed for playback or editing/converting, For ingest HDVSplit and Sclive or WinDV don't need any codecs to transfer DV/HDV to hard drive.
@@ScottSchramm In your future videos please do refer to Sclive, It has more features and more stable streams compared to WinDV based on my personal experience.

Hi, I followed all the instructions, however, once I start capturing a video it freezes after 1-5 minutes and stops capturing. I noticed when installing the K-Lite Codec, I don't have an option to tick MPEG-2 on the Hardware Acceleration page, could it be because of this? (I'm using an RTX 3070 Ti). Many thanks!
@@ScottSchramm Thought so. I've tried many tapes so it must be the camcorder. It usually occurs after around 20 seconds actually and the camcorder continues to play the tape, while the capture video on PC just freezes and displays a blank screen. I've seen someone on a forum say replacing the CMOS battery in camera fixed a freezing issue for them, but I'm not so sure. Anyway, thanks for the help. I think it's time to give up for me now and send it to a professional haha.
been looking at cap cards in all flavors, but roundabout reviews and abit lost. noticed camera has a digital output thingy, any way to do it direct to usb 3? surely thats enough bandwith?
It's not about bandwidth, the two formats are incompatible which each other. You with need Thunderbolt or a desktop with a PCIe card slot. Check out my latest video here: ruclips.net/video/LXXSZdOZb-k/видео.html
I have a hp z440 and I installed a 1343b card. I use windows 10 and it sees my vixia hv40 but there are no drivers. My laptop has usb3 and usb/c and I upgraded to win11. Its a 8th gen i7 hp envy . Should I install Virtual Machine and add win7 to see my camera or do you know of other options?
You shouldn't need to install any special drivers. Check device manager. It also shouldn't be an OS issue, so I wouldn't bother installing a VM because passing though the connection is can be an issue on it's own.
@@ScottSchramm it is called Snappy Driver Installer. It did not install a hv40 driver but a canon dv camera driver. Device manager would not find anything nor windows installer. I even looked on the drive I used to use that it worked on(win 7 64b). Did not find anything. So now I am good. There is no preview in the capture windows in HDV but there is in DV mode. Still I can view the lcd screen. Eventually Win 10 will not be supported and I will have to get a system with win11. I have the hv40 for HDV and the Panasonic dv2000 vtr forr DV as a back up to save my camera hours.
Scott-thanks for the video. My Windows laptop has a USB C but I do not think its a thunderbolt. It has a lightning symbol but looks more like the charging symbol. Is there a way to go from my mini dv camera to USB-C? I know you can do it analog (component or composite) but I want to try and keep the higher quality video. Thanks!
Hi Scott If your laptop (PC) don't have Thunderbolt, and only USB-C, is it still possible to transfer data from the camera to the laptop? Can a regular USB-C transfer data in both directions? I was reading the manual on HP elitebook 735g6 and I couldn't find any information if the USB-C connector also works in both direction, as an input device of data? Thanks for a great video.
@@ScottSchramm Thanks for replying! Is there any other solution since iI don't have a Thunderbolt? I also found an old pc laptop with MS Vista that has a Firewire 1394. If the laptop stiil works can I then transfer direct from the Canon mv830i to the 1394 firewall on my old laptop pc?
@ScottSchramm Using an 8th Gen Win 11 laptop with Thunderbolt 3, the Thundebolt app detects the Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter but WinDV says "No Device Found". Looking at Device Manager I do not see an IEEE Device. The camera is a Canon ZR200. Do I need to install Firewire drivers separately?
You do not need to install any drivers for FireWire, they are built into Windows. If nothing comes up in the IEEE section, that means it's not detecting the camcorder. But since you see Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter, then we know those adapters work. That means the problem is either the FireWire cable or the camcorder.
Scott, will this work? Have your tried it and have info? 1. Use a Pinnacle 510-USB or 710-USB box (or similar-shaped device) to transfer DV or HDV. These boxes ingest DV through Firewire and convert it to a USB "signal" that WinDV/Scenalyzer or HDVSplit (as applicable) will read as DV. Don't ask me how they do it!
I do recall reading about that Pinnacle device and I believe they are applying some compression in order to make the video work over USB. It's probably doing something similar to how USB webcams work. They are extremely rare at this point so I didn't bother mentioning it in the video.
Hello! I have an unrelated question, I am looking for alternative ear tips for the new Air Pods Pro 2nd generation and attachable ear canal hooks to keep them in place while at the gym. I've searched on Amazon but since Air Pods Pro 2nd gen are relatively new, there hasn't been updated information on ear tips or ear canal hook attachments. I stumbled upon your older video on alternative ears tips for the AirPods Pro 1st generation and was wondering if they will fit the 2nd generation Air Pods Pro?
I am working on a video right now talking about ear tips for the new AirPods Pro 2nd gen. The good news is anything for the first gen should fit the second gen just fine.
I’ve never tried a deck like that but I would assume it should work the same way as a camcorder. How do you have it connected? What software have you tried?

Thank you, the cable stuff I found really helpful. Any recommendations for paid-for software for those of us that are security paranoid? I was looking at Pinnacle Studio and I have an old 10.5 version, but it's unclear if this is supported in newer versions. I heard Adobe Premiere supports importing as well, but that's an arm and a leg. It's the K-Lite codecs making me nervous. Thanks again for a great video. RUclips content creators always amaze me!
I don't have experience with paid video editors but I would imagine that most of them would work for editing MPEG2. Most won't support capturing video from tape though so you will still need WinDV or HDV Split for that. Just do the capture, and then you can import them into your movie editor and they should play there. You could also immediately convert them to MP4 using Handbreak or another format converter.
@@ScottSchramm yes, makes sense. It would probably be too risky to trans-code on the fly. All, I did the trial for Pinnacle Studio 26 (free for 15 days) and it has a nice interface to import. My camera is a Canon MiniDV device. Their specs claim "DV" and "HDV". I can't claim compatibility for other devices or the higher definition format, but I have no reason others couldn't succeed. In my case this is the way I'm going for software since it has some additional features including the ability to segment output MPEG2 clips if there's enough of a gap and the remote controls work for my camera where WinDV's didn't. Also, since I have other family members using this, I wanted something that had decent support, updates and this didn't require me to install K-LITE or other codecs which had me a bit concerned. I know not everyone has money to fling around, but this seems to work for me and gives other advanced video editing features without having to pay for Adobe Premiere. I haven't tried re-importing the MPEG2 to see how it handles MP4, but I can confirm Handbrake (recommended by the author for this video) re-encoded it nicely. If this sounds like an ad, it's not. I don't work for Pinnacle, Corel and I don't work in this space. I'm just really happy with what I tried (at least so far) and passing it along in case others are interested in a similar software.
Recently purchased new windows laptop as recommended that needed intel core i7, 1TB etc. It does not have thunderbolt. Is there a better way of capturing video from my Panasonic NV-GS15 camcorder rather than clear click video2digital converter 2.0. You have put together a set of incredible and thoroughly thought out videos on this topic that I subscribed to your channel. Unfortunately so far it hasn't worked with my very new laptop running Windows 11 and using 13th generation Intel chip which you mentioned in a previous video I need 11th generation or less. I have two older laptops running Windows 7 Professional (but these don't need the special cables. They both accept firewire connections). So my question if you can help me answer it is. How can I capture uncompressed AVI using firewire? I have searched high and low to no avail. I'm in the business of media conversion and I have one client that will give me her business (and it's a very good paying job) if I can capture her videos to uncompressed AVI for preservation purposes. She originally wanted me to capture using the FFV1 codec with a Matroska (MKV) container but could not find any help on that topic but she would settle for uncompressed AVI. Please help!!! I hate to lose this job. Thanks in advance.
Thank you for giving me hope, but I haven’t been able to get this to work. I have an LG gram with Windows 11, Thunderbolt 4 and a Panasonic NV-GS300 mini DV recorder. I bought the cables. I followed your process. I did wonder if I just need an IEEE 1394 controller driver?
Is your processor an Intel 12th gen? There was someone else here in the comments (or maybe on one of my other videos) that reported they also could not get it to work with their 12th gen system and apparently they did research and found it wasn't compatible. I haven't been able to find any evidence of this, but I am tying to get my hands on one of these systems to see if I can validate and figure out the issue.

SuperSpeed refers to USB 3.0 which is not the same as Thunderbolt. The icon you are referencing may be to indicate that the port offers power/charging to other devices. The only other way to confirm is to look in your Device Manager and see if a Thunderbolt controller is listed. If you don't see anything in there that says Thunderbolt, then you don't have Thunderbolt and this process won't work.
You are correct Scott regarding my Sony Camera, it is a Handicam, digital not HD as the manual shows because the manual covers 3 models and my model is NOT an HD. So, I do have the WinDV software loaded on the Laptop because as you stated the 12th gen Intel on my new Desktop will not work. On the Laptop the Camera is seen in Device manager and says it is working OK, the software program opens OK, in the lower box it says it is capturing, but it is not. The screen in WinDV is black and the counter is not moving. I am so close to this working but cannot find the problem. Any ideas Scott?

Ive tried HDV split for the hdv video tapes. Win-DV comes with only a basic note with no actual instructions but obviously I selected the Type 2 setting for audio also. So not messed with other settings as assume they are all default although do not want tape split. Just a full 1:1 copy of the tape to the pc hard drive for editing much later. I do not think this is anything to do with the problem but many have reported the many are unable to update windows 11 to 22H2 ive tried twice. Then its gone not offered again untill some weeks later. Still waiting for it to appear where ive been told to unplug all printers scanners etc. ? Also its been mentioned windows does not like it during the update if you have some Apps disabled ?. ie Cortana, Edge, xbox etc seems suspicious to me. If true would be sort of be blackmail to enable them. Any way just thought it might be applicable. What settings and or order did you do to get import of AVI files to the SSD withWin-dv which I installed first- then connected the firewire cable only using the 400 port. ( some say dont use 800) My Davice manager : IEEE1394 host controllers: shows :Texas instruments 1394 OCHI Compliant Host Controller. Updating driver always states best driver installed. If choosing Let me pick from a list .I see the texas controller and just 1394 OHCI Compliant Host controller. Both are digitally signed. Is there a better driver specifically for the Ti chipset. So now holding off buying a LinkTek Via chipset firewire card if there is a possibility my Ti card will work which was not cheap. Sorry this is a BIT LONG. gpop
Hi! Thanks for sharing this info! I decided to buy a new windows thunderbolt powered laptop after watching your videos, since I have a lot of firewire800 devices I still use and didn't want to buy a mac computer. I've been trying to follow your instructions in a 2022 dell xps laptop to connect some firewire 800 audio devices, but simply connecting the thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 adapter shows a problem in device manager (tried every combination of thunderbolt settings in the BIOS already). Thunderbolt control center doesn't seem to be included in the software shipped with the laptop, and trying to install a copy from Intel''s website fails with a cryptic "Error 0x80070643: Failed to install MSI package" in the install logs. I've read some windows updates have broken thunderbolt for some people, so I'm curious if this setup is still working for you (are your ports thunderbolt4/USB4?). Thanks!

Hi Scott, thanks a lot for this video, it did the trick for me but I have weird recurring issue: on several of the miniDV tapes I'm transferring, the first captured video clip has no audio, even though I can clearly heard sound when it's playing on the camcorder as it is being read. If I have several different clips on the tape, all the next ones have audio and no issue, but the first one does not. I'm not sure if it happens for all the tapes, as I did not check the first few tapes I worked on. Any ideas ? By the way, I found that in WinDV, if you check the box left to the Capture button, the camcorder will automatically start when you click the button. Noe need to lauch the tape playback manually. Thanks again,
Hmm I have not heard of that issue before. The only workaround I can think of is to record a quick 5 second clip of something new at the start of the tape, and then maybe the audio will work on the original first clip since it would be now be the second clip. Of course you will loose that first few seconds as it will have overwritten the tape, but at least you have will sound for the rest of the clip
This information has been great! I also have a HP Spectre x360 and VX2000 (along with a Hi8 device), but when I connect the Thunderbolt adapters...as soon as the Thunderbolt to Firewire one connects to the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, a BSOD occurs with a "tbtbusdrv.sys" system thread not handled error. All my drivers are up-to-date but now I'm stuck. Any suggestions? Thunderbolt software doesn't show first adapter is connected either. Thanks!
Try uninstalling the Thunderbolt/FireWire drivers or downgrading to a previous version. HP is responsible for providing a version of the driver that works with their systems.
@@ScottSchramm One more question if I may...when connecting the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter am I supposed to see it being recognized by Windows 11? As of now...when I connect it, I don't see anything that indicates it's being recognized. I'm wondering since I bought an open-box adapter, if that may be the culprit.
If the camcorder has FireWire then this video is the best method. But usually analog Hi8 camcorder don’t have FireWire and will only have Yellow/White/Red jacks and in that case you’ll need to use one of those analog capture devices.
Correct, I think HDV Split will only capture tapes and not capture live but I believe you can use something like OBS to capture live as it should create a "source" for the camcorder. I remember testing this at one point and the gotcha is there won't be sound. You'll need a 3.5mm AUX/headphone cable to go between the camcorder and the audio input on your PC. You may need a USB sound card like this one in order to capture the sound: amzn.to/46MzNLt
Gadgets like MCE QuickStream or DataVideo DN-200, 300, 400 would record live via firewire, so why not a PC with some software? Which software? @@ScottSchramm

There is no way to capture it directly to MP4 because it requires transcoding and no software does that in real time. Instead you are better off capturing everything and then batch converting it all at once. If you have a lot and your PC isn’t very fast you can queue it up for overnight.

Troubleshooting
If you are having issues with your PC connecting to the device, there are a few things you can try:
Here is an example link that shows the settings: www.dell.com/support/article/en-us/sln305418/restructuring-of-usb-and-thunderbolt-settings-on-new-bios-version?lang=en There is also usually an app within Windows called the "Thunderbolt(TM) Software " and make sure it is set to "Always Allow" like this: www.caldigit.com/thunderbolt-3-devices-in-windows-10-platform/
3. You can also try installing a legacy FireWire driver by following these directions: www.startech.com/en-us/faq/firewire-cards-windows-legacy-driver-swap
4. Here is a good guide from Sony which has a few other troubleshooting steps: www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/camcorders-tape-camcorders/dcr-hc44e/articles/00235677

IT WORKED!
Do you know if this would work if I have a docking station with thunderbolt ports, but my laptop doesn’t?
Great video Scott, well covered, thank you.
In your case, your camcorder and tapes are analog so an inexpensive USB capture card is appropriate.

Awesome, I'm glad you finally got a working solution! Thanks for sharing!

@@ScottSchramm figured it out, the camcorder has to be in playback mode for windows to detect and add IEEE1394 Host Contorller

It doesn’t work with with USB-C, you need Thunderbolt.

The process I show using WinDV or HDVSplit captures lossless. You can then use handbreak, FFmpeg, etc to convert to AVI if thats the format you need.

@@djcentinno I'm 99% sure that only the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter will show up in Device Manager and the Thunderbolt 3 to 2 does not show up.
What if it's not digital video or hd? Like Hi8 cassettes, analog, does this video still apply?
If the camcorder has FireWire then this video is the best method. But usually analog Hi8 camcorder don’t have FireWire and will only have Yellow/White/Red jacks and in that case you’ll need to use one of those analog capture devices.
Oh okay, like a Canopus ADVC-100. thanks
The Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter has been discontinued. They are currently selling for $70+ on eBay. I guess I'll have to go the AV route.

Is it true that HDV Split only plays tapes? I want to record live from the old camera. What will do that?

Yet, my WinDV screen is black, no video even though Device manager sees the camcorder, says it is working, the WinDV screen says "capturing" but where is it?

It really puzzles me WHY the WinDV doesn't seem to work. It says it is "capturing", but where is it going. I did notice in the file name box, it tried to place it in downloads, but that should not matter I don't think, it should capture anyways no matter where it tries to place the captured video, correct? Hi Scott - Great tutorial video. I just bought the cables in your links that I need to download HDV from a Canon HV30 camcorder that looks almost identical to yours in the video. I am waiting on the cables to arrive but thought that I would install the required software to be ready to go when the cables arrive. When I tried to run Handbrake, a pop up told me that I need ".NET Desktop Runtime" to run the application. Is that expected? I am running Windows 11 Pro. Would appreciate your opinion on that pop-up. Thanks.
Never mind - I reread the installation screen for Handbrake and it clearly states the .NET Desktop Runtime requirement. Thanks.
hi did you get it to work - is handbrake better than win-dv /hdv split or stoik. what firewire card do you have ie with Ti schipset or the Via chipset. thanks for any help.
@@gpop9878 I never got this specific setup to work - I went back to my desktop that had an actual video card installed and an older version of Roxio software that allowed me to capture video directly from my Canon HV30. Then just had to transfer video to Handbrake for compression. Handbrake (from what I can see in using it) is only a transcoder to convert video format to MP4. Sorry I cannot help you further. Maybe Scott has some information to share.

Yes im trying to avoid compression at least till editing stage. Your right I think I used Handrake to convert a video that would not play on PC.
It appears WIN -DV is for the HI-8 Video tapes and HDV-split or STOIK for the HDV video tapes. Wrongly thinking my new Win 11 pro PC exceeding all the requirements would be a breeze. What a potch as have not been able to get device manager to recognise my canon HV 40 or the Sony hi-8 cam
Ive even tried adobe- as Pinnacle not supporting firewire import - nor does adobe it appears but that could be the Ti chipset firewire card which was not cheap. six months and counting. Its lloks like im going to have to find an old pc just to import the avi files. Handbrake is good, but seems it will only convert your digital .avi to .mp4 after you've already captured. Do you know a way to capture firewire 1394 directly into .mp4 instead of .avi?
There is no way to capture it directly to MP4 because it requires transcoding and no software does that in real time. Instead you are better off capturing everything and then batch converting it all at once. If you have a lot and your PC isn’t very fast you can queue it up for overnight.

Sorry, I don't have any experience with Sony Vegas, but I found these directions online:
1. From the File menu, choose Capture Video (or click the Capture Video button on the Project Media window).
2. A dialog is displayed to allow you to choose how you want to capture video.
3. Select the DV radio button if you want to capture DV or Video for Windows clips using the video capture application specified on the Video tab of the Preferences dialog.
4. Select the HDV or SDI radio button if you want to capture SDI/HDV clips using the internal video capture application.
5. If you always capture from the same device, select the Always use the selected method check box, and you won’t be prompted to choose a capture method again. You can change the method later using the Video tab of the Preferences dialog.
6. Click the OK button to start the selected video capture application.
7. Capture your video
8. Click here to learn how to capture DV clips with Sony Video Capture.
9. Click here to learn how to capture HDV clips.
10. Click here to learn how to capture clips from a tape deck via an SDI (serial digital interface) card.
11. When you’re finished capturing, your video is added to the Project Media list.
