    This finally motivated me to capture the DV tapes that have been on my desk since 2012 :)
    Windows Movie Maker has the ability to import in DV format.
    - Plug in your DV camera in PLAY mode. Windows should automatically recognize it.
    - File Menu, "Import from Device"
    - Advanced Options for additional features
    - Give it a name and select import
    The interface has the ability to control the camera, also.

    I think a lot of people don't know there is a recording date and time on every single frame of video in the DV format on a MiniDV tape, plus other metadata. Services loose this metadata because they capture over SDI. To preserve this metadata, you must capture over Firewire bit-for-bit to DV-NTSC, as you've explained how to do. To see this metadata, you can use a program called DV Analyzer. I use DV Analyzer to be sure a capturing system is not transcoding the video.

    As a family archivist with DV tapes and the Apple FireWire cable-chain, I admire the clarity of your demonstrations and the simplicity of the process. Yes, I could spend a lot of resources on this if I want to be creative rather than just transfer to current media. You touch on the factual necessities before helpful, future editing and production. Essentially this will save a lot of time and effort to achieve highly-presentable format footage. 😀😀😀

    • @Mudge07
      @Mudge07 Год назад

      Unfortunately, after acquiring the suitable cable/adapter chain to use with a new M1 iMac, a minor OS update (so non-retrievable), the partial transfer I’d commenced became obsolete. Discussion with Apple helpdesk gained nothing but the latter status and I reverted to my Win 10 machine and capture chain (non-FireWire) to create soft copies of the media and then edited it on the iMac.

    An easy way to get MiniDV video to a PC at least, is to use a camcorder that has HDMI output. You can then use a cheapy HDMI video capture device to directly record the signal using any capture software such as OBS. No firewire required. The only trick is to find which MiniDV camcorders supported HDMI OUT. My Canon HV30 has it, but I haven't seen too many others with the feature, which is a shame that even the high-end MiniDV camcorders did not offer HDMI out at the prices they were charging back in the day.

    Sixteen years ago I had over 200 full size long play vhs tapes that I wanted to digitalize so I bought a pioneer 530 hard disk dvd recorder and I pressed play on the vhs player before I went to work and recorded the tape into the hard disk on the pioneer. I then split the massive video file into usable segments using the pioneer's inbuilt preocess and burned them onto dvd. Then erased the files on the hard disk and did the same the next day on a different tape. It took me over a year to do the lot ha ha. You can imagine the space I saved on the shelves when the tapes were thrown out after I'd put them all on dvd. Now the dvd disks are all ripped onto external hdd as mkv and what once filled a massive bookshelf now fits in both hands.

    Back when I used my Canopus ADVC100 (another FireWire device, hooked up to an Audigy sound card with a FireWire port), I used the Panasonic DV codec. It’s handy to have a copy around in case Microsoft pulls DV support entirely. The last time I tried WinDV, I couldn’t get the video preview window to work, either. Windows support for FireWire devices hasn’t been reliable since Windows 7.
    Capturing analog video is a rabbit hole you can spend waaaaaaay too much time researching. Uncompressed codecs, deinterlacing, etc. etc.

    Are you sure the footage is stored digitally on mini DV tapes? Looking at the helocoidal heads of the tape mechanism i'm under the impression that the footage is stored in analog form and then converted to digital before the dv/firewire interface. If my assumption is incorrect, that means the y-component output connection on my HDV camera has to go through an internal digital to analog conversion right?
    Also, i always find the y-component output connected to an HDTV and letting the HDTV perform the analog-to-digital conversion to yield better picture quality compared to playing back the digital file captured at 25Mbps. Again, i suspect the internal video ADCs (if indeed the footage is stored in analog form) was inferior in camcorders of the late nineties compared to those of modern HDTVs.
    Looking forward to learn more here, thank you!

    I'm in the process of doing this now with a bunch of tapes, both DV, Hi-8, D8, and VHS, and have been using a HDMI -- USB capture device, which has been working out pretty well. I would offer it as an alternative to having to have all of those dongles for a single purpose...

    • @Rensje94
      @Rensje94 Год назад

      When using the USB capture device, you still use a Firewire port on the camera? Or do you convert the composite signal to HDMI, and then input the HDMI in the capture card? The bottleneck in qualitiy is in the composite signal. Using Firewire preserves as much quality as possible.

    • @Mspikes
      @Mspikes Год назад

      @@Rensje94 I've been using a Mini-DV camera with a HDMI out, a D8 camera with a composite out, and a DVD recorder for the VHS tapes.

    I kinda doubt it, but is there a way to keep it from doing that and just play what’s on the tape?
    I'm using a Sony Handycam.

But instead of final cut I’d be using The Luma fusion app, but before that import it with iMovie. Now I have an old XP Windows machine in storage for over 15 years 350 miles from my current residence, but I’m wondering if I could use it to work directly with the broadcast quality dv camera that I use to for the footage I have. I created it specifically for video editing back then, and that software was able to control my camera on screen. But I’m not sure if it would still work, since it been in storage for so long. You see I e gone over to only using an iPad Pro, and no longer build and windows PCs in 16 years. But that interesting wire combo adapter might be useful once I upgraded my gear.

    Can you recommend the firewire 800 to ilink 1394 cable. I bought the bought the adapter but I think the 800 to 1394 cable is not working.. MacOS 11 can't identity the device connected. Was working on Windows

    I have a firestore fs100 dvr that can only connect to a computer using firewire. I know connecting it directly to a firewire adapter card for pc works, so I was wondering if I could connect the fs100 through the same method you use as if the fs100 was the camera, and it would still work. thanks

    Thanks for the video, is it possible to record at 60 frames per second?

    Hey Lon! I have the same project on my agenda. Finding a working DV deck is indeed a challenge. I went through many cameras trying to find a working one compatible with my Canon LP speed recordings. As for upscaling video, I've been using Topaz Video Enhance AI. It even has presets for deinterlacing and upscaling DV video. I've been trying it out on a couple DVDs with decent results -- but it is entirely dependent on how good your video card is. I wonder how it would perform on an M1 Mac.

      I also recorded mostly in LP to save money on tapes, I wish I didn’t !

      I was just told by a JVC repair shop that my camera is no longer repairable. This seems to be a big problem with a lot of people. Will a Sony play my JVC mini dv tapes without issues? Does anyone know? When you say you went through many cameras, did that mean you bought many cameras? There has be a better way, I can't afford that! Thanks.

      Did you find a way to capture LP recordings?

    • @alextirrellRI
      @alextirrellRI Год назад +1

      @@MaxPowers1245 Yes, with mixed results. I had to acquire another Canon camera to use to rip. Though I've had some issues with the audio actually working. I ripped a whole bunch of tapes and then found the audio was missing entirely.
      But in general, if you recorded in LP in the day, you need a camera/deck by the same manufacturer because Sony, Canon, and JVC each had their own LP formats.

      @@alextirrellRI thanks for the reply or maybe one of the very expensive in the day but now antiquated DV decks I think we’ve got floating around at work or the camera it was recorded on is also still at work pretty sure that’s stuffed though. What a pain oh well

    Im totally new to the topic. Arent there any FireWire Cable to USB? Isnt it possible to connect via USB Port?

    • @johnbrennan8835

      Firewire cable to Thunderbolt, then Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 which slots into your Thunderbolt 4 port (USB-C) on your mac. Thunderbolt 1&2 are the same size. Thunderbolt 3&4 are the same size, but different to Thunderbolt 1&2.

    Great video. I'm doing the same thing but I'm having a problem. I can't seem to adjust the capture settings in imovie because I get no audio in my captured video, and for some reason the capture is breaking down on single continuous clip into 2 second slices of the same clip. Are you familiar with this issue?

    What if I told you a lot of large transfer companies down convert these formats from Digital to composite for capture. They claim stuff like there's only a marginal increase in quality for the added time required and that the customer won't care or pay for that extra time. This obviously is complete nonsense.

    Hi - I can get the video going into my mac and recording it using Quicktime on my mac laptop no problem, but it seems that everytime there is a timecode jump, or I have stopped and started recording on the actual video, the Quicktime recording stops. A message comes up saying 'recording has stopped' and if I don't catch it in time, everything that is has recorded disappears and it comes up with a new recording window. It doesn't always stop at the same place, it's random. I just want to get one long recording of my 60 min videos, not numerous clips as I don't want to be editing them.
    Do you know how I can stop this random interruption of my recordings happening? Thanks

    Thank you so much for the video! I started capturing DV video from a firewire source (minidv camera and Canopus 110). With damaged tapes, I always get more than 100 small clips MOV-DV, with FCPX... opposed to FCP9, there is no option to record "plain" without creating different clips for each scene.
    After viewing your video I tried windv and captured all the tape without creating so many clips, but it generated me a AVI-DV video that FCPX does not open... What should I do?
    I want to keep the original DV to archive (I don't mind on using bootcamp to capture with windv) and then to edit it on Mac with FCPX but without having quality loss converting from avi to mov in order to open with FCPX.
    Thank you so much for you help in advance... I read so many forums for so much time, but I cannot figure the best way to do this...
