A vhs tape using a somewhat obscure piece of computer hardware from the 90s is capable of storing 700mb to 4gb of data depending on compression settings and what size tape is used. :).
SirJeff no, DDS was the data storage version of DAT. A vhs can be used in a similar way and can store about 2-4GB of data. There where some backup programs for computers that had composite video output and input connectors for connecting to VHS recorders. It was not very time efficient or a good way to backup, but it was cheap and could use readily available tapes. But since they record an analog video the quality is very low. They released D-VHS in the late 90s that had improved magnetic tape and recorded digitally, they contained video up to 1080i. It was based on newer recording techniques but the same mechanism.
Christoffer Wiig interesting. Is there a specific name for the format? Or just it use standard VHS tapes? Like how a Commodore 64 uses a compact cassette with program data?
