RETRO TECH: CAMCORDER

  • The JVC GR-C1 Camcorder was the first all-in-one handheld video camera. I trace the history of homemade videos back to the release of this iconic piece of tech and shows how its popularity led to the videos we watch on RUclips today. Fellow RUclips creator Casey Neistat shows me how to film and edit videos on this piece of retro tech. Spoiler alert: It’s not easy.

    I was born in 71' and watched my dad sitting for hours at the dining table after work splicing 8 mm film into edits, so on the weekend the family could watch home movies on our projector in the basement. He had several VHS and then DV cameras after that as well. Most of them eventually ended up with me, shooting skateboard videos or stop motion movies with my sister (my action figures and her Barbies). I'm a 3D animator and travel filmmaker now.

      @Aran Rasekhi Why should I? This was a grammatically correct, coherent and conveying English sentence; I know how to write and speak in English at an upper intermediate level. And yes, the 'have got' thing exists, at least in British English. There are other dialects of English that have noticeable grammatical differences compared to the American dialect.
      But this doesn't change the fact that you're an insecure person who tries to attack everyone and everything around him with pathetic excuses.
      At this point, I honestly don't care. I'm out and I never want to see you again in those comment sections I write comments into.
      P.S.: This is how an incoherent, grammatically incorrect RUclips comment looks like, written by a typical foreign RUclips user whose native language is not English:

If you are gonna dress like the 80s, then actually do that. What you dressed like in this video is an 18-year-old going to a party in 2010. A vhs tape using a somewhat obscure piece of computer hardware from the 90s is capable of storing 700mb to 4gb of data depending on compression settings and what size tape is used. :).

    • @willpitts9957
      @willpitts9957 4 года назад +1

      Foxontherun2 true but we’re dealing with an older variant from the mid 1980s, not 1990s. So it’d probably be more like 250-500mb

    • @SirJeff
      @SirJeff 4 года назад +1

      Foxontherun2 you mean DDS?

    • @blaskkaffe
      @blaskkaffe 4 года назад +1

      SirJeff no, DDS was the data storage version of DAT.
      A vhs can be used in a similar way and can store about 2-4GB of data. There where some backup programs for computers that had composite video output and input connectors for connecting to VHS recorders.
      It was not very time efficient or a good way to backup, but it was cheap and could use readily available tapes.
      But since they record an analog video the quality is very low.
      They released D-VHS in the late 90s that had improved magnetic tape and recorded digitally, they contained video up to 1080i. It was based on newer recording techniques but the same mechanism.

    • @SirJeff

      A normal VHS tape can store up to 2 gigs or so of data. A data formatted VHS tape for tape storage or security systems could store up to 80 to 200 gigs of data. Old computer systems used to back up data Like sales data for a store etc were common cause you only needed the data if there was major screw up. Some tape storage today can store up to 10 terebytes on a single tape cartridge. But it can take a long time to READ the data stored on them. So its meant as a system for if you need lots of storage JUST IN CASE or for ARCHIVING but dont need to access in super fast. Lots of governments still used tape based storage.

    I used to love these as a kid! We have them at my home, I liked to play news caster and my mom would film me. We still have all those old tapes that are a bit cumbersome to move out.
    The thing about things filmed on the physical media is the fact that once the physical media has been used, too much playback, too much and as older, there’s no way to get the footage or photos out anymore. As opposed to nowadays, you can just make copies of many things on a drive and put it on the cloud and you’ll have some thing for a while if not forever. Which makes me wonder how many lost home movies there actually is from back in the day just kind of lost.

Alot of folks feel more comfortable telling you a lie when you can't see their eyes.
