Very good! And damn funny. 😂

The quality improvements are negligible at best when both are exported through an analog output, the gamma and contrast seem to be the bigger factors at play

Very good. Don't forget to include Digital8 in the mix too. It should be the same as MiniDV in picture quality. I used Digital8 in preference to MiniDV because the Digital8 camcorder could also playback my old Hi8 tapes too.

I would definitely buy a Digital8 in order to play back Digital8 tapes from friends, and since it can also play back Video8 tapes and Hi8 tapes, it is a good unit to have. Also, Digital8 players were manufactured typically at a later date than Hi8 or Video8 camcorders, so they will last longer before the capacitors start leaking.
But according to @12voltvids the Digital8 video footage recording quality was purposefully crippled by Sony to ensure that MiniDV camcorders looked better.

@@videocaptureguide I'm not really sure how true that is, I will have to watch the link. I remember when I first bought my Sony D8 camera, my brother bought a Sony Mini DV camera and we did a side by side shoot to compare the quality, and we couldn't really tell any great difference. I think any differences are probably due to the quality of the CCD image sensors and optics. The main benefit for someone like me who chose hi8 initially was the backwards compatibility.

@@videocaptureguide Digital 8 cameras only had problems with their quality in the early models from 1998-2000.
Definitely almost all models sold in 2001 and after had way better quality and with the megapixel models that had higher effective resolution for video.
12voltvids had a bad experience because he was with a TRV110 from 1999.
I have a TRV255E from 2004 and a TRV730E (this one is a higher end megapixel model) from 2001 and both have very good quality. My TRV255E look exactly the same to me as the TRV17E miniDV I had.
My TRV730E however is a megapixel model with a HAD CCD so it compete with megapixel high end miniDV cameras with the HAD sensor.

@@Joscraft_05 Thanks for this info. What is your sense of whether it would be better to connect a Hi8 camcorder to a MiniDV camcorder and transfer footage to computer in passthrough mode VS. playing that same tape inside the Digital8 camcorder and transfer via firewire to the computer?

@@videocaptureguide The only thing I can tell you is that Digital 8 cameras that can playback analog tapes are very well optimized for doing analog transfer via firewire with the A/D conversion to the PC because Digital 8 cameras have TBC/DNR functions and those are neccesary for transferring analog sources to a PC.
You don't have TBC/DNR functions in any miniDV camera.

Are you Reasonably British, or is this one hell of a coincidence? I'll consider eating Kraft cheese if you tell me. =D
