Lost my club a couple of years ago, not to over regulation but to a few who wanted to be big fish in a small pond. Been flying my property and a neighbors farm property with permission since. I'm now the "old man" at 60, but it doesn't feel so. Our club was destroyed by a couple of real "old men" (in spirit, as well as body - no fun allowed) who didn't fly since I was a member and only wanted control of the club to burn it down. I've seen this time and time again in many organizations. We NEED younger people to take the reigns (by younger I mean people younger than Bruce and myself) to take up our hobby, or it will die. Although I love my quads, I sure would like to fly my flying weedeaters (now dormant) but the only local airfields are AMA mandated fly on tuesday night with a club official observer and don't do anything too untoward. I tend to do something untoward as soon as the engine is warmed up and generally don't do it on a schedule, so we don't see eye to eye on that. Now I just fly my quads in my rural locale, dumped the AMA based on principle, and joined Flitetest CBO, and will gladly send my money to any CBO who supports independent flyers or clubs.
It's not about safety, it's about control of our airspace.
Sorry for the long spiel, but I'm behind you Bruce, and see safe, sane, civil disobedience as the only practical path forward for those who don't want to fly in circles over certified fields under the scrutiny of official observers. FLY FREE!

Same thing happened with an aero club I had a bit to do with years ago: older, non-flying members tried to destroy it because they had way too much time on their hands and couldn’t pass medicals. Never could fathom their motivation! But it’s almost an NZ tradition.

These people seem to forget that they are supposed to serve the public instead they often try to conttol them because they get power hungry. If wr were to all stand up to them what could they do. I am an engineering student who as been flying model planes since his childhood. Recently, as our university is so theoretical that those who graduate can barely change a lightbulb, I proposed to start a model aviation club.
In order to get a minimum of legal compliance, as I was the only one with an insurance and a certification, we decided that the models would be registered as mine and those flying would always have me aside "taking responsibility".
It kinda works for us, but it has been a quite depressing view to watch their faces as they realised that if they ever wanted to fly legally on their own they would have to pay annually the same amount of money they would need for 2 or 3 entire models.
Model aviation provides the invaluable advantage of helping people become confident with the knowledge they achieve, because whether a plane flies or falls just depends on the modeller practical and theoretical skills, which is not comparable to any evaluation from outside.
Making this option unaffordable does not just mean wiping out a form of recreation, but also a valuable form of learning. Which means actually restraining freedom

Most of these issues could be avoided with common sense rules, but the bureaucrats simply can't be bothered to do the work to develop them. The bureaucrats don't care about our hobby, and there are companies who feel there is money to be made by drone product delivery. Those companies can't very well built out that business model if we are flying our drones in public air space. So we must be eliminated.

    • @Clickmaster5k
      @Clickmaster5k Год назад +3

The fact that you think you have to register all your aircraft because you got a part107 shows a huge issue with where the hobby went already.
When you fly recreational your 107 is meaningless and your recreationally aircraft do not need to be registered individually. If you don't make someone money with your flying you are not using your part107. I know part107 was sold by a lot of money grabbers as the drone licenses everyone needs but it isn't and never was.

This was helped by the AMA instead if standing up for ALL hobbyists and fighting to retain 336 they pushed and lobbied to have it REMOVED
Almost every editorial they hinted about all this for nearly 20 years and when confronted they denied it and yet they missed and skipped meetings in DC and never spoke up and even skirted meetings with Congressional members who could have helped the hobby , some of that btw was shown in YT where they skipped those meetings even tho they claimed they were there and they finally admitted "well we did not have to be in those meetings" That was a LIE like almost everything those Muncie scumbags say !!

This is how the NRA has gotten their way. Their response was they could not legally do that because they were a nonprofit organization were not allowed to get involved in politics. The NRA has a separate wing for that sort of thing. I was shocked to hear that the AMA had no clue how to do business in DC. You say do not blame these Model organizations / CBO's , but IT IS their fault because they refuse to stand up against the regulators and to demand sensible rules and regs that actually benefit the hobby and have a voice in that rule making OR they can not and will not comply. The AMA in the US is a prime example of what those organizations do. they want membership dollars and Government backing at the expense of the Hobby they are suppose to represent, That was NOT always the case but in the last 15-20 years that has been the absolute demand as their "aeroclub" model has been in decline.
SO with the AMA's backing to help end 336 the agreement was to get forced membership and forced flying field only flying and they got it and they WILL be the FRIA's here in the US as they slow walk and deny most everything else , as the FTCA and the FPVFC are now seeing.
Freedom of flight is a RIGHT it is not a privilege . I get angry when I hear those words spoken because people seem to think" they give us a privilege to enjoy our Hobby when it is indeed a absolute right .
RIGHTS are societal norms in the form of freedoms that are available to people by virtue of being citizens of a country or as members of a society. Rights are considered as fundamental and inalienable. All citizens of a country are granted certain rights under their laws and the constitution in the US .
In fact, it would be wrong to say that rights are granted as they are there to be taken or claimed by people and said to be fundamental in nature.
    ON THE OTHER HAND
a PRIVILEGE is a special benefit or permission granted to an individual or a group based upon status, class, rank, title, or special talent. Thus, privilege is a special right not available to all members of the society but is rather restricted to a chosen few in the society. While some members of the society enjoy this right, others are excluded or denied these rights.
SO that is why the CBO concept ( in any venue ) is a system set up for gain even tho it is classified a Non Profit, PROFITS are what they are about .
The CBO demand in the RC Aviation hobby is a step backwards NOT a step forward . Technology has basically made the CBO/aeromodel clubs obsolete outside of ones choice and or special events etc and WHY those like the AMA scrambled in DC to get their status to FORCED membership, and FORCED flying field flying only.
The FTCA wants that to be a choice BUT also have said one can not request a FRIA unless a PAID Member, that speaks for itself, But they learned the FAA is not going to make everything a CBO wants to be a FRIA and those already established places will get precedent and even many of them excluded in the process and that has already occurred and those places can Thank the AMA for that happening .
So Bruce your own Nz Model Organization is no different. And btw here in the US the Federal Government CAN NOT Force a CBO membership and they know it ( and said so ) and NEITHER can the FAA force ANYONE to follow a set of "suggested guides" by one in order to fly toys.
Even the US code says EVERY CITIZEN has a RIGHT to transit in the US navigable airspace which btw NONE of us FLY RC in, for we do not fly in defined "navigable airspace" where btw the FAA has regulatory authority, we FLY outside "defined navigable airspace" where the FAA has NO regulatory authority ( yet ) [ and NO Congress has NT allocated the FAA's authority "outside that define navigable airspace"
SO there are many avenues to skirt the current illegal rules (because we have NO choice) they have made and many avenues through the court system from registration ( already ruled illegal and unconstitutional ) to even the RID rule based on that same Constitution BUT also on actual already adjudicated cases that shows it is in violation of the 1st-4th Amendments and BOTH state and Federal privacy laws and the gathering of information that even two past US Presidents were found in violation of
SO when two Presidents were ruled illegal and Unconstitutional how then is the FAA allowed to do the same ? Where are the lawyers whose hobby is also being destroyed ? They appear to set and go along for $$ instead of willingness to stand up and tell the FAA/Fed to go pound sand to save the Hobby
WE just CAN NOT get the RC Aviation community together to address what needs addressed and what should have been done years ago, but now are demanding it be done in one small area now.( raise the limit , we tried so hard t get them to address years ago )
When will people simply stand up and say NO, and regardless of who you are, be it an educator , manned aviator ,whatever,[ they claim some have to comply is an excuse NOT a fact ] as it stands and is written YOU Already Violate every rule the FAA has created for the recreational Hobby EVERY TIME you leave the ground and as it stands regardless where you fly and under what CBO or what aircraft etc YOU VIOLATE the FAA rules governing 44809..PERIOD !!!
The RC Aviation Hobby has it's safety rules and has Governed itself for nearly 100 years with an almost spotless safety record, a FACT no other aviation related community can claim and yet now is being attacked and spoke down to like it has the worst safety record. And that goes back to those Commercial Dollars which are in the Billion$ and that is all the Politicians and regulators $ee.....and that is WHY all of this is happening and NOT for Homeland security or terrorism threat or any safety issue etc ( whih btw the DHS said they had NO Authority over domestic drone use in the US )...it was and still is all about those mighty Dollar$ being flashed in their eyes and they LIE to cover that up !!!

For a number of years, a good dozen of us or more had used some local soccer fields to fly on. This gave us a nice open space, largely groomed grass to take off and land on and life was good. We flew during weekdays when the fields were not in use. Then, two years ago, a local large soccer operation struck a deal with the county for sole use of the fields. When questioned as to who we could address on our behalf, each side pointed at the other. We effectively had the door slammed on us even though we left no footprint behind when we were done flying. Living close to the big city put us close to a number of airfields and airports so, available flying areas are sparse. One option is to join the AMA, take a competency test, join a flying club, pay their membership, be supervised, and following their rules. I did all of that but the flying area we had was at a lesser used airfield, with tall grasses, trees around the perimeter, and no flying on or over the airstrip unless supervised by a club principal with radio tuned for local aircraft. Added to that was any electrics over 1 lb. had to fly at the strip, lighter electrics could fly further on down, over the tall grass. Just didn't cut it for me. It didn't suit my style of flying and limited the effective room to fly as being only what was straight out in front of me. Great for acrobatic/3D flying I suppose but I don't fly those types of planes. Add to that the increased pressure put on everyone by the FAA and the hobby has ceased being much of a hobby. Leaves a bad taste in everyone's mouth. I'm still deciding what I'll do. I can still fly locally at a school's sports fields but in September I'm looking at having to rig a transmitter to many of my planes just to be compliant. If the school yanks privileges that will be it for me, I will probably have to sell my hobby away and look for something else to do while being retired.

Good intentions, but MFNZ appears to be pandering to this overreach by regulatory agencies in an area which has been safely unregulated for many years. To use the word ‘privileges’ implies that these are only bestowed at other’s pleasure, and can easily be revoked. I’m sure there are many club types with too much time on their hands only too willing to take up the mantle of enforcers and enable this overreach, some with the best of intentions.
For a parallel but relevant example one only has to look at the excesses perpetrated by homeowners associations everywhere they take root. These often become vehicles for personal crusades and depart from their original purpose, which is to protect homeowners.
The BVLOS compliance looks particularly Orwellian.

Compliance...pff...I have no doubt that before June 1, 2019, when Canada instituted RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems) regulation, and even afterwards because most non-aviation minded people buying them, nor those selling them had any clue they were being regulated, that there was likely tens of thousands of actual drones, mainly consumer grade DJI Phantoms, etc., that were sold. As of now, only approx. 5000 Advanced RPAS licenses have been issued, (those actually using these things professionally), and only about 13,000 Basic RPAS licenses for recreational flyers have been issued. I'll guarantee all the other "drone" flyers haven't grounded their aircraft, probably aren't even aware. Yet these new regs are likely going to destroy our hobby of flying R/C model aircraft. Smh.
My MAAC Zone Director who looks after MAAC's Western Canada clubs has told me he's lost over twenty clubs already due to the Transport Canada exemption being dropped. MAAC, for those not in the know, is much like Model Flying New Zealand. Our club in the small community of Creston, BC, Canada is lucky to see 6 to 10 members in a year, (not joining per year, but total). How many here will we have drop out because they have to get a stupid Drone flying license now for their foamy airplanes?! Sadly, we need at least 6 members to have the club financially viable to stay open. We'll see how this goes. We're going to have a meeting later this month, so it should be interesting!

Bureaucracy does not care it the rules are working or not and how they affect real world situation. In many cases it's a self-sustaining process of spewing out more papers with more prohibitions. It doesn't care if people follow rules or not or if they break rules in secret or publicly. It does not rely on numerical evidence as well.
But the rule making process time to time "interacts" with what pops up in mass-media (yet it is hard to tell what came first: the rulemakers trying to justify new regulations with supporting articles or some Karens posting BS about model aviation provokes rulemakers). Long story short - making noise on the web is likely the best way to fight overregulation. It just needs better spread.

Someone has to keep highlighting the inequity and disproportionality of the current regulations until those responsible start listening. MFNZ can't do that because that would jeopardise the privileges of those who can't reasonably fly under the provisions of part 101 (weight, altitude requirements etc).
When MoT try to bring in registration later this year will be the time for *all* those NZ modelers who really care for the hobby and the opportunities for our kids and grandkids to enjoy it, to take a stand.

I really feel that every model air crafter flyer needs to start our own legislation and make sure that every pilot (of real planes) should know exactly how to install a Flight Controller on a quad. How to make a flight controller work.. Then know every aspect of model aircraft.. LIPO batteries, the safety involved, every tear and how any UART works. How to operate betaflight, and then setup any controller to operate ANY type of model air craft. The bureaucrats want to regulate... let's give them something to regulate. If we (model air craft flyers) have to know all about weather and CRAP that a real aircraft pilot must know, then I feel it's only just that every 'real' pilot know anything and everything out our "hobby"!!!! Let's get serious, that will never happen because all the bureaucrats want is to push us out of existence so they wont have to listen to the tree huggers complain that they don't want to have pictures of them in their back yard.. Around the world, with how many small quadrotors, Coaxial, bicopters and even wing style models are sold in toy and entertainment product stores in shopping malls, the clubs are going to be in the minority of the flying community, and the only ones complying with the further draconian regulations.
There is no way to stop the flood of non-club member folk flying small recreational camera drones - activities such as putting a small drone up and getting a nice photo or video of your holiday campsite, that nice beach you visited, of getting one of the kids to film while you drive your 4WD up a trail to the camp site. These are not dangerous activities, and all these rules and regulations could be tossed out by getting a commitment from the drone manufacturers to update the control software to limit the distance from the controller, and limit the maximum height capable.
