I renovated a 1924 phonograph several months ago. I was surprised it still spun too, heh.
Excellent preventing tearout with tape. 👍
Good idea using caulk (and the corner tool) 👍
    Wow, amazing turnout! 👏

@@diysbydar I think I’m taking an indefinite break from commissions from strangers after that one. 😅 The renovations themselves were interesting. Keeping everything consistent with the time period (i.e. repurposing the record shelves and small pieces of veneer, and doing a French polish finish) made things more difficult. But the finish drove me mad. 😂
I was referred to her by a friend. It was my first furniture renovation, that I recall. I may have bitten off more than I could chew (in a timely manner). 😂 But I did ultimately deliver it to a very satisfied client. 😊

@@DIYwithDaveD omg, I give you sooo much credit for that one. If it was anything like this one on the inside, with that heavy thick stained top coat they used 80 years ago. I don't know how you did it! And, maintained a level of excitement to walk out and face the piece every day. I will check to see if you have a vid on that one. What a crazy piece to restore or repurpose! Regards , dar p.

When I want to make something gold or bronze I usually do a base coat of a golden-ish color in a chalk paint. The Waverley hazelnut with a thin coat of gold over it creates a very pretty bronze, art deco-ish bronze.

Pretty sure that top finish was shelac. Just wipe it with a little denatured alcohol first next time. Great flip!

Hi Toni, I am so glad this vid has inspired you to give this a try. Yes, I have often been asked if I was from Canada. I actually live in n.w. michigan, about 6 miles from lake mi. I always laugh and tell people it's my polish accent. My sisters have the same type of voice. One of these days I will do a DNA map and find out why we have this crazy accent in michigan. Best regards, dar p.

Very cool. Love how you emphasized the art deco lines with the paint colors. Thanks for sharing. What kind of lights did you put in it?

Hi. Thanks for watching. I have 4 puc lights in there. They can dim and change color. From Amazon, battery operated with control. Super easy. Regards. Dar p.

Would have liked to see at least one original shelf used in the piece. Maybe as the bottom of the left side as a pull out. Or at the very top of the left side as a pull out for an extra serving surface. Overall, very nice.

Hi Karen, yes I was so much thinking about that. Leaving one of the record slots on the left very top. For napkins and small storage. The way the insides were set up it was all or nothing. It was built like a tank! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and comment on my vid. Best regards, dar p.

As an antique phonograph enthusiast this was hard to watch. It's a little earlier dating to between 1922-1924, it's an unbranded budget model to be sold in various local department stores across the country. You're right that's it's not very valuable, maybe between $50-$200 in the condition you found it in but definitely salvageable. The parts could've been replaced/repaired, and the cabinet could've been cleaned up. Steel wool and GoJo (hand cleaner), Howard's Restore-a Finish and finally some varnish in the lighter spots to balance it out. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind converting old furniture, unless it can be converted back. The changes you made prevented it from being converted back in the future if someone wanted. The sad thing about this whole shabby chic movement is people see videos like this or Pinterest boards and do absolutely no research on the one they own and ruin perfectly fine or even rare phonographs just to "upscale" them. I don't want my comment to come off too critical, I'm glad you saved it from a landfill, keep in mind people still collect these. A young local person just getting their hands in the hobby would have loved to restore it, I know I would have.
