I have always wanted a 2.3 turbo Fox body. I would also really like to do an EcoBoost swap on a Fox body. Hell, a 4 cylinder or a 2.7 or 3.5 would be kick ass in a Fox.
Re: Ecoboost, check Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords Top 10 for 2015. McLearran Motorsports did one of the, if not the first, E/B swap into an ‘86 SVO. I’ve been in it. It screams.
First time viewer of your channel. Thanks for sharing! I just bought a 1990 LX 4-cyl with 13K original miles that I'm going to V8 swap next summer. I've loved foxbodies since age 15 and I'm 47 now.
Just found your video. Bringing back memories for sure. I love the 2.3 l4. Hopped up a Pinto back in the day then later I had an 84 SVO. gotta burp the cooling system plus I learned to drill a 1/16 " hole in thermostat to get that airlock out. I was up to 18 psi on SVO and embarrassed some 5.0 guys. Good luck
You could go with an electric water pump lamp kits that can adapt your car and also read the temperature within the vehicle and work a lot more properly than a mechanical one
Great stuff ! found you by chance on that frame rail/strut tower repair. Here in Ohio and points north they're all rotten. They can still look really nice to the untrained eye. Have an '89 LX 5.0 T5 vert I bought in '94, still really nice. Have a 90 LX hatch with an '85 2.3 TC motor that runs and drives sometimes lmao. My son dragged me into it, he's now 7 years in with the Navy. Not quite in on an upper end like that $$$$ yet (Bo port or Esslinger ?) but have some inspiration to get back at it ! Nice camera work and well explained... subscribed
I have a 1987 Mercury Cougar XR7 with the 5.0 and I want to do the wide body kit on it so bad now.I think it would look sick since its in the fox body family.I know it takes time and money.
I'm not doubting your abilities or anything by saying it but bleeding the cooling system and burping put all the air fixes most people's cooling issues after changing parts like you did. Also having the right water to antifreeze mix is crucial with these cars. I daily my fox and it runs cool on hot days with the stock rad and fan with a 70/30 mix mostly water
i have finally bled the system properly witch you will see in the next video, i also had my thermostat backwards. It did well on a test drive, but it was less than 70 degrees out, i think i will still risk overheating on a hot day in traffic. At this point i suspect that my overflow is too small. It's empty every time i check it.
I know this is like a minute (or 3) but it is USUALLY somethin simple or overlooked with these cars, ALSO they Love a good AGM solid battery foundation, forget those "Never Start" batteries at your local box store, major problemo for dependability. Nice work 👍
Watched the past few videos . Good stuff . To your boys 2.3 turbo that a nice build I wish that mod market would take off a bit more . As for cooling advise summit use to sell antifreeze additive and run a dual electric fan unless u can find an misemoto I know the spelling is off rad . Good luck man
Ya hopefully it was the thermostat, You can always run with out one why your testing, , then you might want to put a 160 180% Stat in later. That's quite some work you guys were doing there, best of luck for the both of you. You might want to change them fans out to, I was reading Eric's post. Be carful thrres nothing like heating issues.
im doing the 5.0 swap from my 2.3 and looking at his car is like👍 a 4 cylinder can still have💪. i mean that cars got suspension mods too and im sure that turbo makes it fun to drive.
DOUBLE WRENCH THE LASH GUYS ,, LEARNED MY LESSON LONG TIME AGO ,, for goodness sake get a short throw shifter and a notchback when u can [ ssp po-po model has reinforced subframe factory ]. ,, turbo stang/bronco 2 maniac myself .
yep,put an good aluminum 2-3 core radiator in it with the stock fan and shroud.i have an 88 fox with a 308 all built with vortech blower AND A/C!been stuck in car show traffic for hours with windows up and a/c even on without an issue.Granted,i have everything new on and in my engine/bay.this is if you want no worries cooling,no switches, fans, and relays to go bad when you need them the most.Im a certified Ford tech and find that the easier things operate, the better.good luck
I wanted to do allot of the mods y'all have done to this one. I was wanting it to be a daily driver. I also wanted to replace the rubber on the doors and windows to make it look mint. I miss my 93 Mustang. It was stolen, robbed of the stereo and tools I had in it, and completely burned. :,(
Hey those fans are no good I left you a comment where you were installing your fans check the comet out I'm running the side new fans from Summit racing I live in Nevada it's like 110° just installed is about a week ago my car runs 180° all day long the good fans are a little pricey but they put out the CFM that it says it is DERALE performance cooling fans
I have a huge question I have an old 2.3L fox body and I wanna know why people put turbos on it is it just for fun or can they actually create some good power?
I think the idea is to replicate the old SVO mustang. YOu can swap in a Turbo coupe motor. Yes you can get some good power out of these motors. This car makes over 500 hp and runs a 10 sec quarter, but it also has some pretty exotic stuff done. You can swap the turbo on a regular motor and make some really good power as well, however these engines are plagued with issues and blow head gaskets frequently when you drive them hard.
the 4 banger turbo motors are absolute junk, and the 2 guys I have featured on this channel will tell you the same thing. The Blue car featured in this video has some really exotic stuff done to it and it's taken YEARS to get stable. The owner is pretty much sticking with the platform out of spite and novelty. Other than that, you'll be changing head gaskets every month. these motors can make power for a very short time, but they can't hold their boost. I pat my friend on the back for sticking with it and achieving his goal, but there's no way I'd ever have anything to do with one of those. If you really like 4 bangers, you'd spend way less money putting in a JDM motor like the SR20, but if you think you're going to get one of those old ford engines to perform, you're in for a lot of time, money and frustration.
Have you put one of the products Royal Purple makes it another company calls it water wetter? I live out in the desert during the summer we make a mixture of water wetter, 30% antifreeze, 70% distilled water. 50/50 mix of antifreeze like you normally use for regular vehicles does a very poor job at dissipating heat. compared to water, water wetter mix or the Royal Purple product.
I have learned how poorly "coolant" works compared to water, and Water + water wetter works like a dream, but it's not good for your block and pump, I never thought of making a mix of all 3. Could be worth a shot.
Both stangs are hatches, Both are running aluminum 3 core radiators and the same dual electric fans with shrouds . The red Mustang has the stock water pump. The blue stang may have the stock pump as well.
2.3t's dont have to worry bout heating issues. Not sure how i missed the red car being a hatch considering ive seen some of you other videos lol. Some of those dual electric fans are garbage, a mark VIII electric fan is one of the best ones out there and you can find them really cheap. have you burped the red car properly and let it run with a open rad cap and continually topping it off even after the t stat opens? Ive gone through your heating situation many times. Very frustrating
i have finally bled the system properly witch you will see in the next video, i also had my thermostat backwards. It did well on a test drive, but it was less than 70 degrees out, i think i will still risk overheating on a hot day in traffic. At this point i suspect that my overflow is too small. It's empty every time i check it.
Well shoot, hopefully it works out for you man. I'll watch the next vid and see how it is going. Any hp estimates on that 2.5t? I have a 2.3t/aluminum head/s366 going together in one of my foxes. So I am quite interested.
no idea. The entire set up should make 450hp once it's fully optimized for e85. With this base tune and 10psi, he's probably in the mid to high 200's. the boost will be raised once he's done feeling out the car, it's been down for over a year waiting on custom parts.
any 2.3 with forged pistons will work. only difference between N/A and turbo 2.3 is forged pistons and oil return boss on block. if you use n/a block with forged pistons just add a oil return in the pan etc
not sure on 2.5 block but 2.3 stock rods I hear are the weak point at about 4-450 hp. forged rods may take you to 500+. Look up John Huber on youtube, he made 798 flywheel hp with a tall deck 2.3 dirt track block
Man concrete add awful lot of weight on front end. That single tailpipe looks awful. Being turbo wouldnt u be able to run it out front fender? Do u have cam degreed? Cylinder 1 TDc piece flat aluminum laid on 1st 2 lobes get it to be same measurement on ea side scratch new 0 line on cam pulley. Degreed 1 push of start button every time.
Not true. Don’t use factory head bolts!! You can purchase better bolts at the hardware store flanged 12 mm . Not torque to yield bolts!!!! That why they are replacing the head now crappie fastenersi have push my 2.3 stock bottom end to almost 800 hp with proper machining.
Both car are awesome. Blue turbo sounds really good. Keep us updated on blue progress.
I have always wanted a 2.3 turbo Fox body. I would also really like to do an EcoBoost swap on a Fox body. Hell, a 4 cylinder or a 2.7 or 3.5 would be kick ass in a Fox.
if you need 4 cylinder ecoboost swap help hit me up. I'm running a 2.0l ecoboost in my 2002 ranger
@@sethgibowski8695 I kinda want to duratec. Turbo swap my 93. Its a 2wd 4.0 5 speed. Makes over 220 ft lbs and weighs 3100 lbs....fun but needs more
Re: Ecoboost, check Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords Top 10 for 2015. McLearran Motorsports did one of the, if not the first, E/B swap into an ‘86 SVO.

good stuff, you're gonna love that thing with a v8 in it.
You guys make me wanna find a foxbody I've always appreciated cars no matter what age, year, and engine

Hard core rodders. I have swapped and engine in an old Chrysler LeBaron FWD Turbo in an apartment parking spot a LONG time ago.
That red one looks sick with the stance it has. Always new a fox body would look dope slammed.
You could go with an electric water pump lamp kits that can adapt your car and also read the temperature within the vehicle and work a lot more properly than a mechanical one
Got an 86 SVO
need more power
Would like to do this head work
Thanks for the vid
Gorgeous car! Literally a piece of history, both of them!
Great stuff ! found you by chance on that frame rail/strut tower repair. Here in Ohio and points north they're all rotten. They can still look really nice to the untrained eye. Those 2.3 fox bodies are literally underrated
nah, they're pretty trash in stock form. this car has more work into it than you'd imagine.
I have a 1987 Mercury Cougar XR7 with the 5.0 and I want to do the wide body kit on it so bad now.I think it would look sick since its in the fox body family.I know it takes time and money.
John G thats not a 5.0? isnt that a 255 V-8?
I'm not doubting your abilities or anything by saying it but bleeding the cooling system and burping put all the air fixes most people's cooling issues after changing parts like you did. shouldnt have to rely on additive (altho they do work), its only a 4 cyl... theres something very wrong with the cooling system or timing
2.5l out of a ranger not a 2.3 mustang engine
Ya hopefully it was the thermostat, You can always run with out one why your testing, , then you might want to put a 160 180% Stat in later.

Angled intercooler is nice
Nice set up... you will love it I had a 86 svo with boost turned up to about 23 psi and it ran like a bat out of hell
im doing the 5.0 swap from my 2.3 and looking at his car is like👍 a 4 cylinder can still have💪. i mean that cars got suspension mods too and im sure that turbo makes it fun to drive.
Four cylinder power in MD, sweet
your buddies car is realky nice
Really nice doesn't begin to describe it! I want to re do everything on mine now after seeing it!

I run those fans on my fox body 347 stroker supercharged you'll love them
any tips keeping the dam thing cool?

be careful you dont want to keep it too cool or else the sensors wont like it & make it run too rich all the time
I salute you for your service sir. Good video, I'll have to check out the channel.
Good ol 5/8ths crows foot
Still waiting to see a 2.3 EcoBoost drivetrain swap into a fox body.
it's not worth the money for most. It costs roughly the same as a coyote swap.
reminds me of a datsun 240z you can have steep ramp angles with over head cam
Did you have to get a new computer to be able to tune it?
The CFM of the fan's might be playing a part.
quite possibly
I know this is an old vid, but diesel turbos are designed for less heat. How has the turbo held up under gasoline pressures and heat?
I wanted to do allot of the mods y'all have done to this one. I was wanting it to be a daily driver. I also wanted to replace the rubber on the doors and windows to make it look mint. I miss my 93 Mustang. It was stolen, robbed of the stereo and tools I had in it, and completely burned. :,(
Srry man to here ab that
Ever heard of a backup wrench?
What part of Maryland are you from I live close to the boarder near Cumberland
EArly ecoboost? Nice work gentlemen.
I love it I dont what people think its still a mustang

Is he running a distributor or coil packs on his 2.3 ? I would like to know im currently looking into building my 2.3 turbo on my 93 fox
His ECU is a Holly EFI with Holly EFI harness and he's running LS coil packs
Why was the ranger block used?
To gain OBD2 sensor mounts for use with stand-alone? Or purely for the extra 200cc displacement?
not 100% sure, probably for the larger displacement.
He probably did it so it was easier to do the coils.
How much compression is that 2.5 running?
They add cement? Sounds ghetto
Hyde 302R inside the hollow channels in the block. I would probably do something like JB weld instead
How did he route the catch can?
What part of md ar yall in ?
That’s a bright flash light. Lol.
Music reminds me of New Order...

use a 180 t stat and change to elec fans
already done my friend, however, the thermostat was installed backwards, and I may need stronger electric fans.
What fender kit is on your hatch? I love it
What do you think about the 2.3/2.5 turbo? I just bought a 84 gt 350 that came with it stock.
the 4 banger turbo motors are absolute junk, and the 2 guys I have featured on this channel will tell you the same thing. Is there a way to get in touch with your buddy? I have a (somewhat specific) question about his build... Thanks.
I don't want to pass out his info, but he is a member of this FB group and will likely respond to your question facebook.com/groups/TurboFord/
Helps if you run the right piston. The 2.5 pistons are too high compression. The 2.3 turbo piston s are dished and forged.
Electric cooling fans
What part of md you boys from
PG county, near DC

Why a 2.5? No benefit over the 2.3 really
Why not do a DOHC Volvo head swap
I heard of people doing the Volvo swap but it’s actually a lot of work and not really worth it IMO
808IslandWS not worth it with the turbo
Not worth effort.
Dude the fox bodies are very square and angular so why not use a square exhaust tip
Spent all that money and you don’t have a set of tappet wrench’s. Interesting.
so which is faster?
We'll know soon! The 4 cyl really pulls hard.
Kyle Sayre i just watched a car with similar set up run a low 10 sec quarter mile
Shouldn’t have filled the block not enough coolant flow
It took tons of fine tuning but it's working fine. this car just completed Hot Rod drag week and ran 10's at every track.
Whats the set up on the notch?
What fan/readiatior also?
Stock waterpump?
Both stangs are hatches, Both are running aluminum 3 core radiators and the same dual electric fans with shrouds

Do you know where I can get a new engine for my 1984 mustang lx gt turbo. Mine just broke
Craigslist or ebay
any 2.3 with forged pistons will work. only difference between N/A and turbo 2.3 is forged pistons and oil return boss on block. if you use n/a block with forged pistons just add a oil return in the pan etc

Where did you get the cylinder head from
It was custom built by a guy named Tim Ottinger.
Tim knows his shit that head should flow like crazy
Electric cooling fan
Man concrete add awful lot of weight on front end.

Fender exit exhaust on a street car is garbage and illegal.
It's very obvious you don't know how to degree a cam. Lol
Is that a 8 plug engine?
nope, just 4, using LS1 coil packs
Mikel Bentley yeah they have one on each side of the cylinder
2.3t based engine FTW
2.5
if you want your shit to stay cool go get the fan and shroud off a 89-94 v6 taurus
500hp 350 with a dual plane intake... wtf ppl say anything
What are you getting at?
New radiator once u get car hot rad is over they swell swap out new radiator
Water meth kit!!
Go to a v8 radiator
Not true. Don’t use factory head bolts!! You can purchase better bolts at the hardware store flanged 12 mm . Not torque to yield bolts!!!! That why they are replacing the head now crappie fastenersi have push my 2.3 stock bottom end to almost 800 hp with proper machining.
Try meth injections for cooing
If you have to use meth to cool a standard set up then you are doing it wrong lol.
