VERY NICE BUILD ,THANKS FOR SHARING.. LONG AGO I BLEW A HEAD GASKET ON AN 88 TURBO COUPE DAILY , TOOK ADVANTAGE AND PORTED THE HEAD AND EXHAUST MANIFOLD , AND WOW TURBO SPOOLED UP 300 RPMS EARLIER AND HAD A NICE VERY NOTICABLE AMOUNT OF POWER INCREASE ... LOVE THE 2.3
I have done this on my old 86 SVO mustang with 1990 cobra IRS. 6 speed and brakes. long gone, I also still have a 1972 pinto with this swap. 2.55L folvo 5sp, 355 tacLoc and 245 60 15s. no traction untill 3rd gear! fun as hell.
Love the SVO's...this is when Ford was being more experimental. Thinking they may of used the same motor on 1990s Thunderbird, Merkur XR4ti. Remembered a buddy of mine after couple months after he's purchased one...we went for quick lunch run...i mean quick, nearly put a different COLOR on his new seat interior...lol. But this one is rare and very interesting, would never thought the VOLVO head rendered this way. Really great work Sir! Thank you for sharing appreciate this great video. For sure it took lots of time...put into it. BTw..does anyone mentiones you sound like the actor "Sam Elliott" WYatt Buurrp movie..lol just kidn.
Ford experimented with turbo 4 bangers before the SVO but what really hit the gas (pun intended) was high gas prices in the beginning of the 1980's. Hot Rod Magazine even proclaimed on its front cover that V8s were dead, the Buick V6 was going to be the hot rod engine of choice for the future. Ford did use the same engine--sans intercooler--on 1980's thunderbirds (in 1987 they went from the T3 turbo to an IHI unit to make more lower RPM torque--I had a 1986 'bird with the SVO intercooler in the grill, there wasn't much more than the factory 88 hp below 3,000 RPM but once you got up on 12 lbs of boost on low octane pump gas, it was keeping up to V8s of the time) and Merkur XR4Tis, but the 1990's Thunderbirds had supercharged V6's. I always thought of the turbo coupe t birds as a solid axle response to the Porsche 944. Mine just ate up the interstate miles--without a doubt the best $1,000 car I ever owned, back when that got you a turnkey vehicle ready to register.
ive been planning on buying an svo mustang for my first project car since i was a teenager, i just think its the best looking and coolest fox body of them all. i had thought about all the things i wanted and the only thing that rubbed me the wrong way was the 8v head and lo and behold i stumble upon this video. what a feat of engineering! i cant wait to build an engine like this for my project mustang. yeehaw!
There are videos of swaps on old school Fords and Chevys with 4 valve heads from other manuf. and they are running timing belt setups. Love these kinds of builds. Very cool.
Brilliant engineering. Using so many different makers' parts is real hotrodding. Hydraboost to clear intake, T-coupe rad to clear turbo plumbing. storing Dip stick in hood reinforcement. Brilliant
Lots of smart work on that engine 😯 I've had people give improvement names to some custom things I've built on my 2.0 Ford engine and my custom BMX SE XL assassin frame build. One comment was that it was a Frankenstein build. I'll take that as a compliment they were just implying that it was one of a kind with more super qualities then stock builds or the average standard builds. Joey ⚓🇺🇸
extremely impressive. I just saw an SVO for sale for only $1500.00 over here in Southwest Virginia. It was sorta rough, so I passed on it. If I had the skills like this guy I would go rescue that car...
Amazing you are an awesome engineer, very creative, people like you make america great. thank you for sharing your time and knowledge, greatly appreciated
I've always loved this swap.. I think the cleanest ive ever seen it done was in a 32' Roadster I belive? I think it was a Sweedish build. But yes crazy what you can do with some ingenuity
Now that's, how you take advantage of the entire parts bin at Ford, Volvo, VW and Audi... Though I'm fairly certain, there's likely a few more other mfrs parts in this build....? Love the work here...
This is absolutely beautiful! THANK YOU for the video, I love these swaps and have been following them for years I look forward to more videos as these are vary rare....I wonder if these are emissions legal in Oregon, I bet the smog tester guys would be very confused to see VOLVO all over the Ford engine, LOL! Our rules are for engine swaps is "Same make, Same year or newer, must retain all smog equipment." but these aren't swapping engines, just the head. but yeah thank you for sharing and I'd love to see more.
Very Awesome custom work with several different brand names under the hood&now putting out over 250hp at the back tires thats more bhp than the 82-87BUICK Grand Nstionals had&more than the Chevy 454ss,google makes it essy to look up info.Again Awesome upgrades.indeed!!
Awesome, subscribed hoping you have more to come, my 89 2.3 shitstang needs a power boost, and anyone can toss a SBF or an LS in one, this is much cooler.
Great job and great video. I was looking to do this conversion but couldn't find enough information on it. Or find anybody that did it and was still around for questions.
google search "ford 2.3 with Volvo head". still info out there for step by step build of the engine. I'm going to do another vid of more details for the engine build.
You are an artist. An automotive artist! Absolutely amazing work. I enjoyed every moment of your video!! I love SVOs I had no idea you can stick a Volvo head on a 2.3l block. I'm a 5.0 guy (that's probably why).... I have a Canadian 89 Mustang GT Cobra convertable. Love the fox bodies!!!
I envy your passion for this csr. Some nice fab work you got going! It looks very nice under the hood also! Wonder how much hp that 4cyl is cranking out!
Maybe people who only loves v8 and says ''there's no replacement for displacement''. But my engine is as big as a pepsi bottle and still beat your big and heavy v8. i say this even if i own a 86 corvette and a subaru impreza turbo 1993.
Cebastien Larochelle not Sure how to take the reply? lol. But anywho, i also have a 91 5.0, 09 f150, 06' grand prix, and a 15'sonic, so all across the board with engine size. But the size never matters lol can make anything ho fast these days
thanks for sharing the video, good information.. always wanted to do this but i just dont have the mechanical expertise like you do. good job on the swap, your car looks amazing!!!

I bought a white '93 convertible with the 4 cyl. and 5 speed. Beautiful car, but sluggish! Can I turbo charge that or do I do a complete engine swap? (Trans, turbo, clutch, intercooler, electricals, etc.?
Will Riley It would actually be easier to bolt in a 5.0 pushrod or coyote but it's all about the satisfaction of building something different and cool instead of having a belly button car(everybody has one). It also isn't about the power, could have made more power with a v8 or some other type of Japanese or Euro engine, again it was all about being different and to see if I could do it. I've been driving it around quite a bit, taking it to car shows and such. It makes good power at 18psi and so far no problems.
svo blacksmith this is an amazing video man, thanks for the detailed description, most vids just show the engine revving, more vids on what parts you used and how you modded your car and such would be awesome, why no vids showing your car ? you make all this sound easy, but for anyone using common sense i guess it is haha you should make a blog, im sure it would get plenty of reads, hope we see more !
This is an amazing build that i just heard about but. I have some questions i see you had the car for a while is the car still running correctly and how much power can you make with this build. Im thinking of doing this build for my 2000 ford ranger.
+Javier Jimenez Still runnin great. I really don't drive it at all except on nice days. Heater core bad so no heat and I have antique tags which limits the miles I can drive it in a year. Pulled it out of the garage yesterday for a bath and a run up the road. Haven't done much to it since this video. Haven't had time or money for much else but very satisfied with it for now. Google search Volvo head conversion there is still a lot of info out there on how to do it. One guy is getting 900+ hp out of his set up. I appreciate the video, been researching similar things to do someday soon(hopefully) for a father/son build. What year or year range volvo head is best or does it matter. Thanks for any other info. Looks Awesome man!
For any of the new guys showing up like i was the block he is reffering to is the second gen ranger block depending your part of the coubtry that would be an 89-92.5 or 89-94 these are essentially first generation blocks with a dis system snd different auxilery shaft over all stronger 94-03 are the weaker blocks99-03 have weak rods. Just because you have a stronger block dont throw a big turbo on it your crank is good for 350-400 max hp most of you have old engines so 250-275 hp on origional high mileage bearings if you have a 2.3 your good for a max 6 psi safe ish at 4-5 psi id you have a 2.5 dont try it 2.5 has weak stock rods and weaker blocks throw a rod and your block is gonna be the new entry to narnia if your gonna run boost esslinger racer walsh or boport but my overall recomendation is spend the 5 k get a built boport top end and and esslinger bottom end with a stock 2.5 crank improved rods and stock pistons your good for close to 220 at the wheel with a tune

This may be a dumb question, but for all the trouble to do this, why not just source a 5cyl 20v Volvo Turbo engine?! Stand alone engine management and some tuning, that engine makes a ridiculous amount of power and would fit in the engine bay fairly easily from what I see...
Bought the head for 400 at junk yard (too much), rebuild kit for eng was around 200, intercooler kit around 200, fuel rail and pres reg around 100, everything else forgot, but I know less than 2000. I did all the fab work myself and build myself. I am ASE master mechanic, I teach blacksmithing and knife making.
Scott Ellis I cant say for sure but having two cams I assume this engine can rev to higher rpms which would bring you more power. How much probably not much at all without a tune but I’m sure it’s noticeable being a turbo car.
Excellent craftsmanship Sam Elliot. I was wondering what you were up to since you got stabbed in Roadhouse...
Patrick Simmons
Now that's funny... all jokes aside nice build
This is easily the best looking and most thorough execution of the Volvo head swap I've seen. Really nicely done, man!

the forged pistons came in the svo not 92 to 94 2.3l rangers or the fox mustangs. owner of a 93 mustang. and it does not have forged pistons.
Ben Stark 91-93 v-8/l4 mustang didn't have forged internals all of the svo/ho cars did
The 5.0 Mustangs had forged pistons from 1986 to 1992. The 1993 and 1994/95 models had cast pistons instead of forged.
Very impressive! This is an amazing build
Wow, nice build! And great info, thanks for sharing.
Excellent work! One question tho, could I do this on a 1995? It's a 2.3 distributor-less 8 spark plug
This is also where my curiosity is at! I have a 2000 ranger XLT 2.5 turbo build for drifting and this swap has had me curious for a hot minute.
so what kind of gains are we talking bout with all that effort?
welcome to reality irrationally 20hp n/a. But with the turbo not much more gain in being able to rev way higher than anything with the turbo set up

No need to weld block to the backJust tap the oval holes round and plug em; easiest way to do it.
That's a big engine bay
It's designed to also fit a V8, so it looks a little smaller with one of those installed.
Oh one more thing. How did you go about making the DOHC work on the SOHC block...i think you mentioned the Ford Ranger Iron block?? Given everything is running off the ECU engine management control. Thanks again!
Dear
please do you know were i can to buy this head?

Did you use the stock svo block or did you use the Ranger block with forged pistons? That part kind of confused me.
Miguel Cuevas Stock svo block, stock pistons, stock computer, stock distributor
svo blacksmith Did you have to modify the pistons for valve clearance? I have read online that is required?
Miguel Cuevas You do not have to cut pistons for valve reliefs but not doing so makes it an interference motor meaning if something happens to the belt it will bend valves. mine has not been cut and have revved it to 7000 rpm with no probs.
Miguel Cuevas stock svo block with stock pistons, new rings and bearings, felpro head gasket not the cheap one and arp head studs. used ranger accessories and brackets except power steering pump from turbo coupe.

Building a 347 or 408 stroker and swapping them in would be easier and provide significantly more power. But they would be just another V8 Foxbody.
This may be a dumb question, but for all the trouble to do this, why not just source a 5cyl 20v Volvo Turbo engine?! Stand alone engine management and some tuning, that engine makes a ridiculous amount of power and would fit in the engine bay fairly easily from what I see...
Where did you get the headlamps
Do you really have to weld aluminum? That's a bummer :/ I think that idea for me is out of the question...
Bro you are a gineous! How much do you figure the build cost?
Bought the head for 400 at junk yard (too much), rebuild kit for eng was around 200, intercooler kit around 200, fuel rail and pres reg around 100, everything else forgot, but I know less than 2000. I did all the fab work myself and build myself. I am ASE master mechanic, I teach blacksmithing and knife making.
Thanks :)
How did you get yours welded. Your self or did you have a shop do it??
bad ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
does it still have a distributor?
Any updates on the car?
nice sounding engine......
+winston didit thanks
What block did you use?
2.3 Ford Lima
Awesome job!
whats the point of the swap does it make more power or what? if the computer doesnt care about how many cams then how can you tune ?
Scott Ellis I cant say for sure but having two cams I assume this engine can rev to higher rpms which would bring you more power. How much probably not much at all without a tune but I’m sure it’s noticeable being a turbo car.
Computer doesn't control your cams? It controls fuel, and ignition timing. You must be a honda guy this isn't vtec
@@robertpolicastro1 I am a honda guy I also have a pretty sick svo but hey thanks for being a fuck boy. I was asking a serious question...
