86 svo with volvo head
This is a short description of some of the things I used to make this work. I did this swap on a budget so I used a lot of spare parts, junk yard parts and off the shelf parts from other vehicles. You have to find what works and make it fit. If you have a basic knowledge of cars and some fabrication skills you can do this swap. I am using stock svo pistons not cut for valve reliefs, stock distributor, stock electronics. The computer does not care how many cams it only cares about incoming air, air temp, coolant temp, 02 readings, map readings and vacuum leaks. Standalone computer is nice but not a must.

86 svo 2.3 turbo with ported and polished Volvo head 3 inch piping big intercooler stock block and pistons just got running
Nice work
Now that's, how you take advantage of the entire parts bin at Ford, Volvo, VW and Audi... Though I'm fairly certain, there's likely a few more other mfrs parts in this build....? Love the work here...
I just finished a b234f head swap in my xrti but im having problems with pressure in the crank case did you use the same pcv setup from original sohc block ?
Did you have to do anything to make it fit
I have done this on my old 86 SVO mustang with 1990 cobra IRS. 6 speed and brakes. long gone, I also still have a 1972 pinto with this swap. 2.55L folvo 5sp, 355 tacLoc and 245 60 15s. no traction untill 3rd gear! fun as hell.
For any of the new guys showing up like i was the block he is reffering to is the second gen ranger block depending your part of the coubtry that would be an 89-92.5 or 89-94 these are essentially first generation blocks with a dis system snd different auxilery shaft over all stronger 94-03 are the weaker blocks99-03 have weak rods. Just because you have a stronger block dont throw a big turbo on it your crank is good for 350-400 max hp most of you have old engines so 250-275 hp on origional high mileage bearings if you have a 2.3 your good for a max 6 psi safe ish at 4-5 psi id you have a 2.5 dont try it 2.5 has weak stock rods and weaker blocks throw a rod and your block is gonna be the new entry to narnia if your gonna run boost esslinger racer walsh or boport but my overall recomendation is spend the 5 k get a built boport top end and and esslinger bottom end with a stock 2.5 crank improved rods and stock pistons your good for close to 220 at the wheel with a tune
awsome build
Does the engine idle any better? My brother had a base 2.3 in a 1979 Fairmont Futura and that engine was like a paint shaker at idle some days. It was too much car for too small of an engine. In 1995 I worked at an auto auction and one day drove a 1984 SVO and it too had that rough idle I didn’t like. Although I think an SVO would be a fun car to modify. I don’t remember the last time I saw one.
That is just nature of bigger 4 cylinder engines. You should try a Cummins 4bt. It will shake the fizz out of you Dr Pepper. Generally, you just set the idle a little higher to smooth things out. A Fairmont wasn't much bigger than mustang. They were both Fox chassis cars.
Zetec could fit there as well and it is Ford.
Sweet video!!
Holy shit...I have some bad ideas now😂
Will this work the same with a 2.5 Ranger 4 cylinder Lima engine?
The wicked wicked black 1984 in Palm Desert area with the 358" Kulwicki Sonoma engine is King of SVO land
Absolutely love it...GREAT JOB!!
Air starvation in cylinders 3-4
at 1 point you got to ask yourself why not simply get a volvo 8v block slap the volvo 16v head on and use that instead of all this fabrication, you could have gotten a trany adopter and been on your way pretty much
Mustang Ecoboost 2.3 would be a good swap for this and other Fords, Merkurs etc. and cost effective too. Also, much less fab. work.
Lots of smart work on that engine 😯 I've had people give improvement names to some custom things I've built on my 2.0 Ford engine and my custom BMX SE XL assassin frame build. One comment was that it was a Frankenstein build. I'll take that as a compliment they were just implying that it was one of a kind with more super qualities then stock builds or the average standard builds. Joey ⚓🇺🇸
ive been planning on buying an svo mustang for my first project car since i was a teenager, i just think its the best looking and coolest fox body of them all. i had thought about all the things i wanted and the only thing that rubbed me the wrong way was the 8v head and lo and behold i stumble upon this video. what a feat of engineering! i cant wait to build an engine like this for my project mustang. yeehaw!
This man is a wizard
This is WILD!!!
cool build very nice
Would a Cosworth YB head fit?
Hi,I would like to talk with you.I’m interested in buying a Volvo head for my Lima 2.3 turbo engine.Do you have any available? Best regards
Masterpiece
What a great video to stumble on for us right now! About to start this project for a new build of ours. Thank you very much for the info!
I’m looking todo the same thing what head did you use I’m doing it in my ford merkur 2.3 1986
Dear please do you know were i can to buy this head?
Wow! Well Done!
This is kind of build I appreciate. Anybody can do a LS swap, but this takes real thought and effort.
Right, squeeze everything you can out of it
That's the art of tuning. It could rival the RB26 if done right.
Ex fuckin actly
For sure.
Excellent work! One question tho, could I do this on a 1995? It's a 2.3 distributor-less 8 spark plug
This is also where my curiosity is at! I have a 2000 ranger XLT 2.5 turbo build for drifting and this swap has had me curious for a hot minute.
I bought a white '93 convertible with the 4 cyl. and 5 speed. Beautiful car, but sluggish! Can I turbo charge that or do I do a complete engine swap? (Trans, turbo, clutch, intercooler, electricals, etc.?
Awesome, subscribed hoping you have more to come, my 89 2.3 shitstang needs a power boost, and anyone can toss a SBF or an LS in one, this is much cooler.
How much hp does it make?
What block did you use?
2.3 Ford Lima
VERY NICE BUILD ,THANKS FOR SHARING.. LONG AGO I BLEW A HEAD GASKET ON AN 88 TURBO COUPE DAILY , TOOK ADVANTAGE AND PORTED THE HEAD AND EXHAUST MANIFOLD , AND WOW TURBO SPOOLED UP 300 RPMS EARLIER AND HAD A NICE VERY NOTICABLE AMOUNT OF POWER INCREASE ... LOVE THE 2.3
Amazing. Well Done Sir!
Nice work... I could never even concoct something like this.
Can you just use the 5cyl volvo engine, is there a bell housing to connect to a Tremec 5-6 speed manual?
A home made Cosworth. Awesome!
Awesome! We need to hear this bad boy run!!
This may be a dumb question, but for all the trouble to do this, why not just source a 5cyl 20v Volvo Turbo engine?! Stand alone engine management and some tuning, that engine makes a ridiculous amount of power and would fit in the engine bay fairly easily from what I see...
As a mustang and Volvo owner i just have to say this is Utterly brilliant ! Runs pretty good !
There are videos of swaps on old school Fords and Chevys with 4 valve heads from other manuf. and they are running timing belt setups. Love these kinds of builds. Very cool.
Superb hot rod craftsmanship. It's Covid time, and this guy makes me proud to be an American. I don't care who you are or where you are from. Look at that. He says: It's not that hard to do. rofl
nice job
This is why I rebuke people who speak ill of Southerners and say they are dumb. Southerners are not dumb.
Astonishing
Why not use the complete Volvo engine and trans.
WTF wood u do it...
