  • Why does laughing bring on asthma or coughing? The Buteyko view is that changing your normal breathing pattern to a high volume, erratic, fast breathing pattern can act as an asthma trigger .
Asthmatic lungs are hyper-sensitive to changes in air quality. Just taking a few big, mouth breaths - for example when doing a Peak Flow test - can be enough to cause many asthmatics cough. In a similar way when we have a fit of the giggles our breathing becomes erratic, we breathe in a fast, jerky way, with occasional big breaths. Fast, dry air rushing into the lungs can act as an irritant to sensitive lungs.
You can quickly reverse the unwanted effects of this erratic over-breathing by deliberately breathing less.
First - change to nose breathing which substantially reduces breathing volume.
Then pay attention to the flow of air - breathe slowly and gently.
Thirdly - hold your breath for a few seconds in between breaths.
Imagine that you are bathing your lungs in warm, moist, almost still air.
This is just one exercise of many to help asthmatics improve their quality of life by reducing the impact of asthma.
